The PSP GPS adapter hasn't seen too much support since its release late last year, but that's about to change. In Japan, the latest issue of Famitsu is home to a final release date for Sony's highly anticipated GPS update to Minna no Golf (known as Hot Shots Golf internationally).
Minna no Golf Ba Vol.1, as the game is being called, will hit Japan on 5/31 at a slightly pricey 5,980 yen. This is about 1,000 yen higher than most standard PSP games, and it doesn't even include the GPS unit. Sony will also offer a GPS unit bundle, at a cost of 9,980 yen.
The inclusion of a "Vol.1" in the title suggests that there will be future installments in the series. Sadly, Sony has yet to comment on the new addition to the name.

Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII has a habit of making a brief appearance and then disappearing without a trace for months. The last sighting was at the Japanese Jump Festa event last December, where Square Enix unveiled a playable version that blew us away with its visuals and production values. Then, all went silent.
The game has resurfaced again, this time on the pages of Famitsu. The magazine has a four page update on the title, with new story and gameplay details, and some hints on when we can expect another look (following what we presume will be a period of complete radio silence).
We now have complete details on two characters who seem to have the biggest roles in the game's story. First off is Zack, who made a brief appearance in the classic FFVII title and is the main character in Crisis Core. Famitsu reveals his last name: Fair.
Joining Zack Fair is a first class solider named Angeal Hewley. He travels with Zack heavily, and the two have developed a strong trust, with Angeal acting as the teacher and Zack the pupil. He's also apparently well connected to the Sephiroth and Genesis characters. An image in Famitsu shows Angeal, Sephiroth and Genesis in a face off in the city of Junon.
Proucer Tetsuya Nomura shared some comments with the magazine on the two characters. He pointed out that Zack's last name, Fair, contrasts with Cloud, the hero of Final Fantasy VII. Hewley is a Greek term.
The Famitsu story also clears up a few points about the battle system, which we got to experience at the Jump event. In our hands-on writeup, we mentioned a mysterious three-slotted roulette that appeared at the top-left of the screen. This is known as the Digital Mind Wave. The DMW spins around on its own and automatically stops. Based on the number on which it stops, your character earns a variety of status upgrades, including increased HP and a full MP meter. Once you've gotten your rewards, the roulette automatically begins spinning again.
The DMW is the key to getting special Limit Break attacks during battle. The roulette has character images in addition to numbers. If all three slots stop on the same image, you get a powerful attack or recovery move, depending on the image.
Nomura wouldn't give a final release date to the magazine, but he did reveal that the latest version of the game will be available for play at May's Japan-only Square Enix Party.
At the very least, Japan can expect this game in 2007 now, as the official release date in Famitsu was recently changed from TBA to TBA 2007.

Despite being culprit to cramped fingers, Sony has no intention of redesigning the PSP. Sony officials refuted the idea that that PSP was in need of a DS Lite-style remake, stating that the system will see no physical alterations. The design will stay the same, but the way interacts with consumers may change.
A Sony rep said that soon the PSP would reach its promise. That could be a hint that the PSP will finally be able to download movies and become a more interactive partner with the PS3. Sony hopes to one day allow gamers to download movies directly to the PSP. A resolution depends on Sony's ability to find a way to lock movie content, so that you can't simply copy a pay-for-download film to other PSPs.
Expect announcements on some new PSP functionality within the next few months

John Koller, Senior Marketing Manager, revealed an interesting internal statistic in last night's blogger panel: according to his research, only 11-14% of PSP owners have a DS. Although the system may be selling less than Nintendo's dual screened portable, it's clear that Sony's device is targeting a completely different market from Nintendo.
"We're not just competing against Nintendo," Koller explained. The platform has to compete against the iPod, the Zune, and a plethora of other multimedia devices. When asked how Sony will attempt to differentiate their offering even further, Koller simply smiled and hinted that the XMB will become much more fleshed out in the coming months.

Publisher Take 2 Interactive may undergo vast changes in the wake of its annual general meeting - including, potentially, a sale of the company or of some of its business units.
That's according to CNN columnist Chris Morris, who reported today on his CNN/Money column that many industry insiders are predicting that a shareholder revolt, aimed at taking over the board of directors, will succeed.
The investors behind the revolt currently hold 46 per cent of Take 2's shares - and with both financial and public relations catastrophes still besetting the publisher, it's certainly possible that they could oust the board and with it, current CEO Paul Eibeler.
According to Morris' sources, if that happens Take Two could be immediately put up for sale - with plenty of interested parties both inside and outside the videogames industry likely to want to get their hands on franchises such as Grand Theft Auto. Rupert Murdoch's News Corporation is cited as a potential suitor, for one; the firm has long been interested in moving into the game sector, and in the past has contemplated deals including a takeover of Electronic Arts, which was ultimately abandoned as too costly.
The other option, Morris says, is that parts of Take Two would be sold off - possibly divesting the firm of all of its divisions with the exception of the vastly successful Rockstar Games label and studios, which develop and publish titles such as Grand Theft Auto, Bully / Canis Canem Edit and others.

For 3.03 OE-C Custom Firmware
While disabling some of my icon tex_focus files, I decided to try to make use of that annoying "blink".
Just leave parts of your icon transparent, (or don't and put text or whatever around it) and use the Zinga Burga's RCO Icon Editor 1.11 to change your tex_focus for that particular icon...
So far, we can only add white to this file, but maybe eventually, someone will find a way to add color.
NOTE: this wouldn't work with a 480x272 bg, because it corrupts the icons. So if you want a bg with more than just color gradients, then resize it to 250x142. Then rename it to 01-12.bmp
A huge thanks to Zinga Burga. His RCO editor, has made all kinds of incredible XMB hacks possible
Look at the memory stick icon:
It's simple enough.
If this seems confusing for some people, I will post a quick tutorial later tonight.

Europe may be the first region to get PlayStation 3 consoles that lack the PlayStation 2 Emotion Engine chip. It has been claimed other territories will also get the machine later this year as Sony strives to boost its profitability.
So says a Nikkei newspaper report, by way of Reuters. It alleged the move was being made to cut the next-generation console's production costs.
Sony has already admitted the version of the PS3 to be launched in PAL territories on 23 March has no Emotion Engine - the brain of the PS2 and the means by which the PS3 is able to play many PS2 games.
Instead of hardware support for old games, the paper claimed, Sony will offer software that emulates the missing chip. This is the approach Microsoft took to allow the Xbox 360 to play original Xbox games, even though the two machines use entirely different and incompatible processor architectures.
Arguably, it's an approach Sony should have taken from the start. The move should allow the consumer electronics giant to begin offering cheaper PS3s, to boost demand, at the cost of limiting backward compatibility, which many users probably don't care about - they want to play new games, not old ones.

Well, slightly more. Last month, we reported that the PAL PS3 was going to come up rather short. The console's innards will be different from ones sitting around Japan and the US, and the machine PS2 backwards compatability will be, and we quote, "limited." But with the TV division finally turning a profit, and Sony losing money on each PS3 sold, it's time to cut games costs. And cut 'em for PAL regions!
Today in Tokyo, Sony pretty much riterated what we've heard before: The PAL PS3 won't carry the microchip that dishes up PS2 data and graphic processing functions. Instead, it will be outfitted with a different chip altogether — A cheaper, crappy chip that will lower the console's BC.
What's more, Sony aims to roll out Cell chips with a smaller circuity width (the new ones will be 65-nanometers as compared to the current 90-nano ones). Narrow circuitry means smaller chips, lowering production costs. Not sure how that will effect quality. Japanese investors were happy by today's announcement as company shares rose 3 percent. But what do gamers in PAL regions think? Oh, right. They're pissed!

Rushed Mii clones? The Sims copies? Second Life-ish? Take your pick. But, apparently Sony's concept of Home is a little more original than that. Back in 2005, the following posts appeared on the official PlayStation boards:
SCEA and SOE are developing MMORPG(something similiar to ffxi) style online service for PS3 right now. It will have online pack which it comes with HDD and the online software. You can go online and chat with people like mmorpg style. Your stats will have the list of games you have and scores(or ranks) for each game, and other great things. And if you want to look for someone to play online for certain game, you have to go to this certain area(or town) for that specific game or the game will automatically takes you to that town. Sony thinks "hyper links" technology is a history. They want to create a "virtual world" for PS3 online service where people can actually interact eachother like mmorpg style. There are more great details, but this is all I can get for now. I'm not expecting you to believe me
Game site You NEWB sent us the above quote. We did some leg-work, and various insiders confirmed that apparently Sony has been planning Home for at least the past three years — Pretty much Xbox Live blew the doors off everything. (Originally, Home had a more futuristic feel. Think PSO.) Even Kutaragi has supposedly been interested in a visual, 3D, online interface with personalized avatars since the PS2 days. The irony: It's been kept top secret to prevent competitors from copying it! Rome wasn't built in a day. What about Home?

The Middle East isn't going to miss out on the launch of the PS3. Sony Gulf have announced that the region is going to be receiving units on March 22, which for some reason is a day earlier than in Europe or Australia.
The same Casino Royale deal applies as elsewhere in PAL regions, the launch lineup looks the same and...you guessed it...no 20GB models either. The prices are so far only available in UAE Dirhams, where Sony first-party games will be 229 AED (USD$62) and the console itself will be 2499 AED (USD$680).

When Square Enix started work on Final Fantasy XII for the PlayStation 2, it was determined to have a short-term turnaround for the project, according to Taku Murata, Square Enix's head of research and development.
He told a packed room at GDC during a session titled "Final Fantasy XII Postmortem" that the company had employees working on a variety of specialist subtasks. He said, "We wanted to avoid a long-term development period, [and] to solve that problem we just hired so many employees that you can't imagine." In the end, the game was five years in development.
There are three core aspects to the Final Fantasy franchise, Murata said: innovation, quality, and volume. "We thought about what we needed to focus on, and in the end we decided we needed a seamless battle system, and this was at the core [of the game]."
He added that although this might not sound like a major innovation, since many other games on the market at the time were already using this kind of system, for Final Fantasy, it was a big step with many possible pitfalls. Murata explained, "That's because role-playing is about inputting commands, so those who are not good at action games can also play."
FFXII had a huge amount of non-player characters as compared to previous installments of the franchise, Murata revealed. The game had approximately 1,000, as opposed to 300 in Final Fantasy VII, and a meager 200 in Final Fantasy X.
The number of monsters remained static, with 250 beasties in XII, the same as VII, and slightly more than the 200 in X. There were also fewer bosses than in previous games, approximately 30 in total as compared to 50 in the two previous games named.
At the end of the session, Murata referenced the announcement in January that the company would be licensing Unreal Engine 3 for future games. Murata said, "We have a team that is going to use this wonderful engine, but we need to work out how to use this to create our games," adding that the process would take some time to integrate.
He wouldn't be drawn on which particular titles Square Enix would be utilising its recently acquired engine on, except to say that an announcement would be made "soon."

March 9th, 2007, 17:05 Posted By: wraggster
LocoRoco director Tsutomo Kouno's Thursday presentation at the Game Developers Conference was billed as a postmortem on the development of his colorful PlayStation Portable offering, but the developer knew he wouldn't be able to make it through the event without talking about the sequel.
After recapping the game's creation from a single concept sketch on his PDA in spring of 2004 to a finished game in June of 2006, Kouno turned to a list of things he'd like to do for the next LocoRoco. Speaking through a translator, Kouno said he wanted to use physical calculations for drawing characters in the next game, as well as incorporate advanced crowd artificial intelligence (A.I.) into the game. The change in A.I. would be used in every aspect of the game from the way the LocoRoco blobs walk together to ways they could dodge various environmental dangers.
Other areas that Kouno said he wanted to improve on included the use of music in the game, and the visual effects. But perhaps most interestingly, he teased, "I'd like to use a new way of playing the game for the next version of LocoRoco."
He wouldn't talk about it during the session, but did promise attendees "a new and pleasant surprise."
Sony Worldwide Studios president Phil Harrison first confirmed the LocoRoco sequel's existence in a question-and-answer session at last month's D.I.C.E. Summit. It came up again in Harrison's GDC keynote speech earlier this week. In showing off the trophy room of the PlayStation Home service, Harrison's in-game avatar/tour guide paused in front of a giant LocoRoco trophy. However, there was no mention of trophies being made available for anything but PlayStation 3 games.
When a member of the audience asked Kouno whether the next LocoRoco would be a PSP game or a PS3 game, he said he knew the question was coming, but couldn't answer it. Instead, he promised, "I'm not going to betray your expectations. You can count on this."

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Phil Harrison has told GamesIndustry.biz that the company is set to focus on software now that the "challenges" of recent months are in the past.
"I can't deny that we've had some challenges, but I think those are all behind us," he said.
"It's all about software now, it's not about hardware. It's all about services, it's about the way the industry is changing and the way we hope to be taking a leadership position in that change."

Phil Harrison has been speaking at GDC about the lack of third-party exclusive titles for PS3, saying that they will be easier to secure once PS3's install base grows.
Speaking to various bloggers at the conference, Harrison said, "I don't think PS3 has the install base to support Rockstar's investment in GTA IV on its own." And if you think about it he's pretty much bang on the money.
Grand Theft Auto IV is going to cost Rockstar a lot of money, especially as the company is taking the technology in the game further than it has in the past. And to that end it needs to make a lot of money from sales of the game. Putting it on a platform that's very early on in its lifetime with a small install base won't make you as much as splashing it across two platforms.

Discussion and reaction to Sony's recently-announced PlayStation Home has been rampant at the Games Developers Conference, with most excited and dieing to dive into Sony's virtual world, while others are skeptical whether the service goes deep enough (mostly Nintendo and Microsoft employees).
We roamed the GDC halls to get a quick reaction to the PS3 Second Life-alike, and here's what our victims had to say...
Cliff Bleszinski, lead designer, Epic Games:
"I think PlayStation Home is very cool. This kind of suedo Second Life-style setup and having a virtual space that I can call my own and invite my friends to hang out in - it's neat stuff.
Taking an interface in a 3D direction is always a good thing in my opinion."
Nintendo spokesperson:
"This is an example of Sony's 'Mii-too' approach. But as Mr. Miyamoto states, Nintendo years ago considered and rejected the type of approach Sony is now taking"
Chris Satchell, general manager, Microsoft Developer Group:
"I think Little Big Planet is very cool. It's a very cool game and it's got a cool user-generated content feature but I can't see a big portfolio of games at the moment that do this. I don't think there's a whole load to catch up.
I think they've definitely taken some concepts that we originated like achievements, but I think they're pushing in a different direction and we've sort of fundamentally got two different approaches going on here. I think theres is very much a vision that people see it and it looks cool but it's fundamentally separate from the games - or at least what they've shown so far.
So you've got an environment where I don't have a unified community, I don't have unified achievements, I have to leave the experience to go back and see all that stuff - it's not an approach that's consistent; It's like some games will do it, some games won't, some games have achievements but they don't have to have achievements.
It's not a very game-centric approach. It's a cool world but it's like a little game by itself. Our approach is the other way around; that games are the center and that's the star of the show, that's what people buy the console for."
Chris Taylor, CEO, Gas Powered Games:
"From what I heard It sounds great. If I've got a 3D avatar, a world, a house and all this kind of stuff - that sounds awesome! First I'd like to see it myself with my own eyes but conceptually from what was described to me it sounds cool. It sounds really cool."

In tonight's blogger meeting, I had a chance to talk to Sony president Phil Harrison about his keynote and the suspicious absence of the PSP device: "We didn't talk about the PSP because [the keynote] was 45 minutes," he tried to explain.
John Koeller, the man responsible for the marketing of the PSP, then joined in: "We're absolutely not overlooking the PSP." He hinted that the future of the PSP looks very similar to what has been planned for the PS3. "We could start talking about PSP in the same manner as Phil."
Sony recognizes the potential of the system, and promises that in May, they will be revealing some more exciting news. "The promise is there ... [yet] we're well aware of the market realities." What specifically the PSP will be evolving into is still unclear, but it appears as though downloadable media and PS3-style Network features are in the works. From the smiles on their faces, it's clear that some truly exciting things will be happening to the PSP this year.

have good news and bad news for PSP owning Final Fantasy fans. Both are release date related. Firstly Tetsuya Nomura has said that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII will have it's release date revealed soon. I'm sure almost every PSP owner is looking forward to that info. Unfortunately Square Enix has delayed the release of Final Fantasy II Anniversary Edition. Now instead of coming out in May in Japan, it will be out in June. While there hasn't been any official release date given for either Anniversary title outside of Japan, this delay will likely push back whatever those release dates were to be. Is there anyone more excited for the Anniversary Editions than Crisis Core? I'm personally excited for Crisis Core the most out of the PSP Final Fantasy projects thus far.
