Sony's gaming arm lost around $1.2 billion last year - an impovement from the $2.2bn loss the year before. But is Sony losing $260 per PS3?
"On Sony's own figures, the games division made a loss of $130 for each PlayStation 3 shipped. Let's assume that it's making pots of money on the PSP and the PlayStation 2: the PS2 is now hugely profitable and still sells more games than anything else. These two platforms could easily have made a profit of $1.2bn in the year. In that case, the total PS3 loss would have been $2.4bn shared between 9.24m PS3 consoles, or $260 per PS3 -- including any attached Sony games."

Speaking to VideoGamer.com at Sony's recent PlayStation Day Nigel Kershaw, MotorStorm Pacific Rift's game director, has revealed what it's like to develop for the PlayStation 3.
He added: "We've realised we've just scratched the surface of what we could actually do with the machine. And I'm sure next time around we'll learn a lot more from MotorStorm Pacific Rift."

We've got the first official pictures of Pelican's Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth Headset for the PlayStation 3, which show off more of the product than the leaked sales sheets that hit the net a few weeks ago. As a matter of fact, our pictures are of the real product that just arrived in the office. While we work on the full review, take a look at what Snake would use for his calls if he didn't have slightly more advanced technology available.
We must note that this is a pre-production sample. Any finish imperfections will be addressed when the retail products ship in a month.
The MGS4 Headset is a standard Bluetooth 2.0 hands-free device, which means it can be paired with both the PlayStation 3 and any Bluetooth-enabled cell phone so you can rock it both at home and on the street. We're certainly down to roll with it in public, as it offers a good deal of contrast to the stand-issue Bluetooth headsets on the street. Spec-wise its battery life is rated at 8-hours of talk time and 160-hours of standby.
Pelican will launch the Metal Gear Solid 4 Bluetooth Headset day and date with the game's release, June 12. Retail price will be set at $59.99..

Hey everyone, this isn't anything exciting but I just wanted to let you know.
Our download section has finally been brought up to date with all the updated versions of the GS and Pad plugins which are under development.
Also, some outdated and useless files have been removed to prevent confusion.
I've also updated our sourceforge page ( http://sourceforge.net/projects/pcsx2/) with the current info (it was last updated about 3 years ago!),added some screenshots and both FAQ - readme docs in the documentation section.
In other (more interesting for you) news, development is going good as you're able to see from the frequent SVN updates, with Refraction making the usual core changes, with a recent one giving a huge speed boost in some games (albeit breaking some, still trying to figure out what to do with that).
Saqib is also working on something behind the scenes, wait and see when it's done

Ragnorak2040 has released a new version of Nes emulator for PS2:
Sorry, protomank and everyone, didn't realize I'd need a verified Paypal account just to receive donations, so I denied the donation, which should give you your money back, protomank. I couldn't find a way to actually get verified without a bank account. I tried adding a credit card, which didn't affect anything. They denied me for their credit card, which is weird since I've never had an outstanding debt. And so, I closed the account. I looked at other options but they required even more information than just a bank account like emailing copies of photo ID and utility bills. Fortunately, my brother does have a verified paypal account so I asked him (after waking him up) if I could use it for donations and he said it was alright. I removed the old donate button and put up the new one with a new button image at http://homebrew.thewaffleiron.net/ragnarok2040
Thanks for trying to donate before, though, protomank .
Thanks for the info., spkleader. I think the same problem that was affecting the hdd0:M/ type bug is still affecting the rest of the path where I add a random byte by accident. My pointer math is still fuzzy, it seems. It's probably affecting the savestate names as well. I'll rework the way I do it so I don't increment a byte after the memcpy for setting the null terminator of the string. I'm pretty sure where that extra "/" is coming from... "hdd0:/" "__boot" "/" "/boot" "C.elf". I guess when I fixed that bug with the device string, it caused my other pointers to get offset by one byte.
Edit:
Heh, I removed all the +1's when setting the null terminator and it didn't affect the creation of the strings, so my math had 1 byte of fuzziness per each part of the string :S. I'm not sure how it might relate to browsing for roms, though. Maybe something to do with the partition not being mounted or unmounted correctly, or the pfs# path is being returned wrong (pfs1 where it's mounted to pfs0, for instance). For rebooting an elf, the "pfs" path that's made needs to be valid, so it would crash if it wasn't... I'd also forgotten to increment past the '/' if there was only one, in your case pfs0:/boot.elf would become pfs0: / /boot# .elf# with random characters after /boot# and .elf# resulting in your pfs0://bootC.elf (hdd0:/__boot//bootC.elf). I changed the version number to B955 for build 95.5 which seemed like a good place to start.

Starting tomorrow, echochrome's getting a booster shot of levels. Over on the PlayStation Blog, Kumi Yuasa, associate producer on the title, announced that 20 new, user-created puzzles will be available for players to peruse between May 15 and May 21.
"The additional levels will appear at random in freeform mode if you set your difficulty level to 2 or 3," Yuasa wrote. "The difficulty level is represented by the bars at the bottom right of the loading screen between freeform levels, and the difficulty for the next level can be set while the next level is loading by pressing left or right on the d-pad. Levels are picked randomly from all levels in your 'gallery,' 'portfolio,' and user-created levels."
The puzzle creators will get their just rewards as well because Yuasa will be revealing the PSN IDs for each level being distributed.

Metal Gear Solid 4 will have an unlockable Altair costume in it after all.
Originally shown in a video released on April Fools Day, the Assassin's Creed character model will actually be in the game when it ships on 12th June worldwide.
How you unlock it is a mystery being kept by those to whom the secret was revealed in Tokyo this week, but it's not the only bizarre collaboration in MGS4.
According to GameSpot's account of the MGS4 wrap party, Snake also has an iPod in-game, which lets him play music he collects, with additional tracks set to be offered as DLC.
There's also a lot of raw product placement, like Triumph motorbikes, Sony Ericsson mobile phones and even some real-life clothing.
This being a Hideo Kojima production, and this being the last in the MGS series (at least until they change their minds again), goodness knows what else we'll discover - Psycho Mantis doing horoscopes, perhaps, or a radio contact who doesn't want you to lie on your tits in a warzone having existential discussions about soldiering.
We'll have to wait and see. The full game's out on PS3 on 12th June and we'll have a review for you very soon. In the meantime, check out our hands-on impressions of the finished game, which Oli was lucky enough to play in its entirety.

Sony has reported that for the financial year ended March 31, 2008 it sold 9.24 PlayStation 3 consoles globally - up 5.63 million on the previous year - while software sales jumped by 44.6 million to hit 57.9 million across the 12 months.
Meanwhile the PlayStation Portable also performed well in terms of hardware sales, adding 4.36 million units over last year to bring it a total annual sales figure of 13.9 million.
The PlayStation 2, despite its ageing hardware, still shifted 13.73 million units - a decrease year-on-year of 980,000, but a strong performance nonetheless.
In terms of software sales, the PS2's enormous installed base led to sales of 154 million units, down 39.5 million on the year but still almost triple the other PlayStation platforms.
The PSP only showed minimal growth, however, adding just 800,000 games over last year to a 55.5 million total for the year to March 31.

pipagerardo has just released a GREAT Homebrew game for our loved PSP. If you like action and tanks, this will your favourite Homebrew game.
What about if I tell you that you will be able to play with a friend using PSP AdHoc conection? If you prefer to play alone, you will have to defeat tanks. At first, you only have one opponent, but if you continue playing...you will have to defeat 5 tanks on the field at the same time!!!
Enjoy this marvelous game, PSP Slim compatible and translated into English. There are two downloads, one of them doesnt include background music, because it works better with AdHoc sinc.
I almost forget! pipagerardo has promised us to release future versions of the game, with new functions.
Enjoy.

Hoping to ride the popularity coattails of Monster Hunter Portable 2nd G, Sega's upcoming action RPG Phantasy Star Portable is gearing up for its summer release with a first trailer.
The PSP release, being produced by Sega's Sonic Team division, is based on the latest games in the series, Phantasy Star Universe and its expansion, Phantasy Star Universe: Ambition of the Illuminus, and will offer offline multi-player functionality, letting four players team up on quests, just like 2nd G.
As pointed out last week by Kotaku, the desire to entice Monster Hunter loving fans goes beyond game functionality, and includes an updated logo that bears more than a passing resemblance to Monster Hunter's logo.
The game comes out July 31st in Japan, and a UMD demo will be given out shortly before launch.

First off a personal thanks to Magixien the webmaster of the French PSP Scene site PSP Gen for this news and the english translation
In the article "Why a custom firmware 3.93 rather than 3.95 ?", We explained that 3.95 was regarded as no great novelty and interest. However, our fetish programmer had wanted to go ahead and after finding the keys to decrypt the firmware and updated RSPsarDumper, it has finalized a functional Custom Firmware 3.95. As for 3.93 CF, it is based on a reverse of the work of the Team M33 (involving a lot of changes, NIDS, patches, etc) but 3.95 parts is coded by our programmer alone.
It took a while to get there but it works very well even if some small bugs continue to be resistant. The test phase is therefore begun, and we try to make the best correct everything that is possible.
What does or does not, the new Custom Firmware ?
Launch ISO / homebrew 3.xx
Adding a name to differentiate firmware for PSP to 3.95 standard ones FC (general request in the forums).
POPS 3.95
IRShell functional functional execpt ISO Launch
PSP 5.0 Filer functional
Plug-in Capture.prx tested ok
Plug-in cwcheat.prx tested ok
Plug-in Recovery LE (Ketchup) and tested ok (except for displaying the version number blocked on 3.90M33 - Update plug-in planned)
The USB Host is always a bugguy but works perfectly with a small tip.
The recovery is still accessible directly via the XMB with the L key
CXMB does not currently works but we updating the plug-in is underway (just a problem of addresses to settle)
Popsloader not working. Only Dark_Alex can update its plug-in. Is not planned at this time.
Taking screenshots should be added. Still under discussion.
And when this will be released ?
No release date has yet been set. Our goal is to solve the majority of bugs before release Our goal is to release before this weekend. Stay tuned.
New custom firmware, sounds good to me
