When tabletop arcade manufacturer Retro-Tech makes a coffee table, it's gotta do more than hold books on Famous Chateaus of the 18th Century and What Things Look Like From the Sky. It has to hold that stuff and piss off your home theater.
So they start with a 19" touchscreen, add a Blu-ray drive with video out and a Microsoft keyboard and mouse to control is all. (And we're pretty sure a PC is stuck in there too.) To round it out, 6mm of "toughened glass" protects the top, though we're a bit confused if the touchscreen still works when covered. You can definitely see the arcade influence in the design, but we wish they'd gone a step or two further in incorporating the glossier elements of tabletop games. And would a splash of color hurt anyone? Price TBA.

You could wait until Metal Gear Solid 4 comes out to get your gunmetal PlayStation 3. Or, you could make your own, spiting Kojima, Sony, all MGS4 fanboys and people who just like the color black. One modder did just that, repainting his case in dark weapon-happy silver (Tamiya Gunmetal TS-38 spray paint). And it actually looks pretty good.

Today Sony's PSP guys gave us a heads-up on what's next for the portable. Two years after launching in Japan, we're finally going to get GPS action for the PSP on this side of the pond. Happily, it looks like we'll be getting a much better package than Japan for a change.
Due in the next 12 months (hopefully by Christmas, but not likely), the US PSP navigation software will be all new and much sexier, powered by Tele Atlas with a solid, easy-to-use UI and great-looking maps. The coup de grace is full 3D walkthroughs of cities, supposedly first in the portable class, at least in the US. Sony is aiming for it to be cheaper than most GPS setups too, like $100 to $200, and you can run it off UMD or memory stick. Plus, it'll come with a carmount.
Overall, it's pretty exciting stuff that could really break open the GPS market. Beyond navigation, Sony is thinking about treasure hunts, friend locaters and other geo-coolness.
Sony is also cooking up a keyboard that would plug into the bottom, the A/V and headset jacks, and would fold up to protect the screen when you're not using it.

It looks like Sony is aiming to put ColorWare out of business with all the new, brightly-colored PSP models it's introduced as of late, a streak that continues with the company's just-announced metallic blue model. This one is available exclusively in a new Madden NFL 09 bundle, which includes said game, along with a 1GB Memory Stick, the NFL: In Just One Play video on UMD, and a PSN voucher that'll let you download the Beats rhythm game free of charge. Look for it land on August 12th with the usual bundle price tag of $199.99.

via Games Industry
A number of GAME stores across the UK are warning pre-order customers that they might not be able to pick up their Rock Band bundles when the game is released this Friday.
The retail specialist has stopped taking pre-orders for the game in store, as new consumers become attracted to expensive offerings from publishers such as Electronic Arts, Activision and Nintendo.
"As with other hugely innovative and popular titles like Guitar Hero and Wii Fit, Rock Band is creating enormous interest from a new range of customers," a spokesperson for GAME told GamesIndustry.biz.
"This has meant that some of our stores have had to stop taking pre-orders because their launch stock of the Band in a Box pack has already been ordered."
Publisher Electronic Arts caused outrage amongst fans last month when it announced the price of the game in the UK.
The peripherals for the game are priced at GBP 129.99 with the game sold separately at GBP 49.99. In North America the game complete with instruments retails for around USD 169 [£85.84].
However, high pricing clearly hasn't deterred committed fans, with the game likely to sell out during the rest of the month.
"We are working closely with EA to bring more units in for the launch and immediately post-launch," added GAME.

Sony US has explained that it moved Killzone 2 to February 2009 so the game didn't end up competing with others in its own catalogue.
The decision was purely a management one, explained Sony US speaker Ron Eagle, and nothing to do with any development problems.
"Killzone 2 was moved to Feb 2009 to make sure we didn't have three shooters in the marketplace competing for retail dollars during the same holiday season," said Ron Eagle, SCEA speaker, on the US PlayStation blog.
"To be clear, there is nothing wrong or causing a delay to the development of the title. We (SCEA) had to look at the [autumn] calendar with SOCOM, LittleBigPlanet, MotorStorm: Pacific Rift, Resistance 2, plus some PSN titles and make a decision where each game should come out."
Mr. Eagle also revealed that there will be plenty more information to share on Killzone 2 in the "coming months", presumably at the E3 Media & Business Summit this summer.
"The [PlayStation Day] event was the first of many steps, but please rest assured that multiplayer, co-op, story weapons, etc. will be covered in the many steps to come," added Eagle.
That full PlayStation Day Killzone 2 trailer can be found now on Eurogamer TV, right here.

via Computer and Video Games
Voice actor Michael Hollick was paid $100,000 [£50,797] for his fifteen-month stint as Niko Bellic in Grand Theft Auto IV.
Hollick, who was an unknown quantity before the game's blockbuster success, has mixed opinions on whether or not he was given a reasonable amount for his role in the biggest entertainment product of all time.
"Obviously I'm incredibly thankful to Rockstar for the opportunity to be in this game when I was just a nobody, an unknown quantity," he said last week according to the New York Times.
"But it's tough, when you see Grand Theft Auto IV out there as the biggest thing going right now, when they're making hundreds of millions of dollars, and we don't see any of it.
"I don't blame Rockstar," he was quick to add. "I blame our union for not having the agreements in place to protect the creative people who drive the sales of these games. Yes, the technology is important, but it's the human performances within them that people really connect to, and I hope actors will get more respect for the work they do within those technologies."
In most other mediums, Hollick would have been paid royalties for his voice appearing in the product. He said that he "asked about residuals when we negotiated, but I was told that was not a possibility."
The issue is further clouded by the inclusion of his voice in other media outlets advertising the game, including television, film, radio and the internet.
Unsurprisingly, other voice-actors in the game earned significantly less than Hollick. Ryan Johnston, who played Patrick McReary, said that he was paid $1,050 [£533.39] a day.
It must be terrible to earn $1,000 [£507.96] a day.

New from Play Asia:
Ever since the action racer MotorStorm are released, the game developer Sony Computer Entertainment has been providing expansion packages for downloads. In the last two years, a total of eight such packs are released and missing these means missing out a large portion of action racing fun.
With MotorStorm Complete, you can get all of these packages built into the game without having to go through the trouble of downloading them one by one. Aside from saving your downloading time, this reasonably priced package saves you some extra money as these downloads often requires a fee.
Sixty-two new items are released through this package and an online support function is included. With MotorStorm Complete, you can now turn this one player game into a twelve player online race.

We've seen plenty of attempts to use game console hardware as MIDI controllers, but they've usually involved complicated hacks and strange software kludges, so we're pretty curious to see if Curious Inventor's Midiator actually works as promised. The nondescript black box is supposed to map virtually any PS2 controller -- including wireless models and partial support for Guitar Hero axes -- to various standard MIDI controls, including use of the analog sticks as pitch bends and modulators. Not only that, but if you don't feel like buying the assembled kit for $79, you can get the schematics for free, and if you're handy with a soldering iron, you can even earn some cash by adding requested features like pressure-sensitivity and direct USB support to the unit.

It looks like those wanting to churn out some high-definition media away from their computers now have a new option to consider courtesy of Hitachi, which has just introduced its DZ-WR90 Blu-ray burner designed to be used with hard drive-based camcorders equipped with an eSATA port (which Hitachi just happens to make). That combo will apparently let you burn three hours of full-res footage onto a Blu-ray disc in one and half hours flat or, if you prefer, you can also cram an hour of 720 x 480 video onto a plain old DVD. No word on a price just yet, but you can apparently look for this one to hit Japan in mid-July.

Konami has temporarily ceased taking pre-orders on the Metal Gear Solid 4 hardware bundle, after a US deal launched on the official site yesterday went belly up.
Eager fans hoping to get hold of the limited-edition Gunmetal PS3 bundle, sold exclusively through the official online Konami Store, were greeted to "503 errors", according to Kotaku, who described the ordeal as "a cluster**** of massive proportions". Nice choice of words there.
The Store works at the moment. But it says the allocated pre-order stock for the day has been reached. It then asks you to "check back tomorrow (May 20, 2008), when we will make available more stock for pre-orders."
Not really one known for having solid internet servers, Konami really needs to prepare itself for the impact of another internet rush, so that it isn't hit with another disaster reminiscent of the Metal Gear Online beta fiasco.

Gamers yearning for a futuristic anti-gravity racer, ala F-Zero and WipEout, will be happy to know that Eipix's Pyroblazer is blazing on through to fill that void (apologies for the pun, it was too easy). Players will take control of anti-gravity crafts called Blazers, and then battle through the varied lands of New Aperion. The game uses Eipix's own Ultra Engine in conjunction with Ageia's PhysX middleware.
Players can decimate other racers on the tracks by picking up weapon and ammo upgrades during the race. In addition, persistent players who battle their way through the championship mode are rewarded with faster and more powerful Blazers.
You can play the game single player via Quick Race or Championship, but the game also allows for 6 local players and includes online play.
While there is no release period for Pyroblazer on the PSP or Wii, the game is set to release on the PC sometime this May.
