Acclaimed Japanese developer Level-5 has unveiled Ushiro, a quirky new horror role-playing game for PSP.
Players are cast as Shinigami (the Grim Reaper) and attach themselves to people about to die, according to Japanese magazine Famitsu (read by NeoGAF).
Once attached the Shinigami will help the mortal fulfil their final wishes, and even fight monsters embodying that person's malice.
Level-5 has been responsible for titles such as Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King and Professor Layton and the Curious Village. Currently the team is working on White Knight Story for PS3.
Ushiro is due out across Japan next year.

Future, the publisher behind a number of videogame magazines and websites, has announced it is to provide an on-console only weekly digital magazine for the PlayStation 3, available through the PlayStation Network.
PS3 owners in the UK will be able to download the magazine onto their consoles from early 2009, which will be followed by a roll-out across Europe. Earlier this year, Future launched Qore in the US, as a monthly programme for North American users of the PlayStation Network.
"We are very excited to further strengthen our relationship with Sony, working together on this ground-breaking product," said Robert Price, Future's UK chief executive. "As the publisher of official magazines and digital content for Sony PlayStation in the US and UK, we are creating powerful integrated media solutions for readers and advertisers across different platforms, in print and online. This product will provide a unique way for advertisers to connect directly with gamers through their consoles using the very latest high definition content."
This news comes after Future saw its share price drop to the lowest value in seven years to 21 pence - just 0.5 above from its lowest point ever in 2001.

Sony plans to offer a Special Edition of Buzz! Quiz TV this Christmas on PS3.
Alongside the game, gold-embossed case and wireless buzzers will be an extra 1000 questions to tie brains in knots with. Plus, there's a bonus 500 videogame-themed questions, and a quiz on African wildlife that Ellie should be quite good at.
There's lots of previously-released PSN content bundled in as well, such as four additional characters, Trophies, ten buzzer noises and a Quickstart mode to get straight into the action.
The Special Edition also has support for PlayStation Eye, which can take pictures of you looking confused or getting angry with your smarty-pants flatmate. Hi Chris!
Buzz! QuizTV arrived on PS3 back in July, boasting user-created and downloadable quizzes, wireless buzzers and online battles for groups of people on PSN.
The reception received was favourable, but the game quickly dropped off the UK all-formats chart.
Buzz! QuizTV finally launched yesterday in the US.

Co-op Resident Evil 5 is all set for its playable debut in a couple of weeks at the Tokyo Game Show, but ahead of the big Japanese gaming event, Famitsu managed to get a few new details.
The magazine got the word on a couple of new characters. Joining the growing cast are Albert Wesker and Excella Gionne. Wesker should be recognized by any Resident Evil fan as the former captain of S.T.A.R.S. Excella is a new comer. A family member of the founder of the TriCell Pharmaceutical Company, she runs the company's African branch. She's aligned with Wesker, which of course makes her evil.
Also included in the magazine are just a couple of details on the the co-op mode. First announced at E3, players will be able to enjoy the Resident Evil 5 story mode online with another player. Teamwork appears to be the key here, with Famitsu noting that if one player should die, the game will come to an end for both players.
Closing up, the magazine offers a look at some of the new creatures that Chris and Sheva will face off against. One group of particularly large creatures flies about, looking like a cross between a bat and a spider. One scene shows the creatures unleashing a sticky web-like goo which appears to immobilize Sheva. Another scene shows the creatures destroying a helicopter.
Resident Evil 5 will be playing a big role in Capcom's Tokyo Game Show plans in a couple of weeks, so be sure and check back for more.

We hope you're in the mood for girly-men and stats, because Square Enix has just supplied us with 70 screenshots of its 360 and PS3 RPG The Last Remnant. Try and look at them all.
The game, which is being developed internally at SE, follows the story of a fictional world where ancient artefacts give you magic powers (that's the plot of every RPG ever then).
The game also features a brand new battle system, which the dev team is describing as "turn-burst, command-based system using symbol encounters." In other words, fancy QTE sequences.
It's out in Japan, North America and Europe on the same day - November 20. How times have changed.

Valve and EA have no plans to offer downloadable classes or content for Team Fortress 2 on PS3.
Valve has no PlayStation developers, which was why EA had to internally develop The Orange Box for PS3. And that seems to be as far as the enormous publisher wants to go.
"They're not doing ongoing development on The Orange Box for the PS3," Gabe Newell, Valve boss, told 1UP.
Pyro, Medic and Heavy updates as well as community-made maps are already available for PC, and will be heading to Xbox 360 in the future.
Valve is currently hard at work on Left 4 Dead, the co-operative shooter for four survivors against hordes of either computer- or player-controller zombies.
Gabe Newell said EA is "interested" in doing a PS3 version, but until both parties can work out where the resources can come from, the game will remain a PC and Xbox 360 title.

Nugi has posted this release for the PSP, heres the full text:
Hello~
I'd like to notice the release of my PSPlayer 2.0 app.
You can check following URL.
It is written in Korean, but you can find a download link for a zipfile.
http://forum.ps3korea.com/t32422/
----- Following is included english readme in zipfile.
PSPlayer 2.0
0. Notice
As I'm not good at writing in english, I write minimum information for video player of PSPlayer. Full details are in PSPlayer.txt in korean. Translation would be appreciated.
1. PSPlayer video player.
1.1 Features
* Based on FFMPEG nearly latest source(svn rev. 14728).

* Super high quality custom YUV rendering using PSP video acclerator. Precise color conversion. Deblocking in chroma channels. (from PSPlayerMT)
* Fast avi loading by optimizing index loading.
* Max video resolution. 480x272. (PSP HW codec library does not support higher resolution. maybe)
* No restriction in framerate.
* Buffering mechanism used in PSPlayerMT. (but extreamly reduced buffer size.)
* FF/Rew supported.
* Using internal bookmark mechanism, resuming supported.
* Async reading of video files. Less memstick access.
* usbhostfs, nethostfs supported. (first should be enabled using irshell. etc.)
1.2 Video player control
←→ : FF/REW (to next keyframe)
↑↓ : FF/REW (to 30sec keyframe)
L1/R1 : FF/REW (to 5min keyframe)
△ : change zoom mode
Ⅹ : Stop playing
□ : Show player debug info
START : Pause/Play toggle
Analog Up/Down : Boost volume 1x-20x (in SW)
1.3 Additional notes on video player
* Most of software codecs are removed to reduce pbp filesize. (except AC3)
* Sometimes H264 decoder fails.
* After decoding of Mpeg4 video(xvid), H264 decoder crashes occasionally. (in sceMpeg library)
* Recommended encoding software. (regardless of codec)
- to avi files. Badak. always my favoriate. ( http://www.kipple.pe.kr)
- to mp4 files. XviD4PSP 5.x. Good for mp4 files. ( http://www.winnydows.com, avi not working)
- no special conversion setting is required for H264. (just select file, setup codec and convert.)
- HW xvid decoder does not support b-vop(b frame), gmc, qpel. When encoding with xvid, disable unsupported options. (With mencoder, add -xvidencopts max_bframes=0:nogmc:noqpel)
* Have an option for RGB rendering of Mpeg4 video.
* First audio track only. No multi-track audio.
* developed and tested on 3.90 M33-5(1.5 addon, fatmsmod patch) and tested on 3.71 M33-4(?, 1.5 addon) and OFW 1.5 on DAX's time machine. (not a slim psp)
* Full compatible list of container and codec combination. (tested.)
- AVI - opendivx/xvid/h264 - ac3/mp3
- MP4 - xvid/h264/opendivx(?) - mp3/aac
- any combination of video/audio codec is supported. (ex. avi h264/ac3 ok)
* avi files takes additional 10MHz CPU clock.
* ac3 is not recommended. for compatibility only. It takes additional 50MHz CPU clock.
2. PSPlayer other features

* text viewer. Up to 2M lines. Fast loading. Simple bookmark.
* mp3/aac/m4a/ogg player. with playlist support.(m3u)
* bmp/jpg/png/gif support. but primitive.
* Additional features and how to use is in PSPlayer.txt and readme.old. (but in korean, sorry)
3. Code page and font (text files and subtitles)
* PSPlayer is a totally multi-byte application.
* Can handle 2-byte characters.
* No code-page conversion.
* Included font is a rip of a korean font. (in CP949)
* Should match encoding of text files and font.
* Font converter can be released if I can find it somewhere in my harddisk.
4. Source codes and license
In each binary distribution source code will be included.
Source codes follows GNU GENERAL PUBLIC LICENSE. See license.txt in the distribution.
5. Compilation
You need to setup pspsdk and addtional libraries. See Makefile for full list of needed libraries.
I includes svn diff for ffmpeg source and configure script(ffmpegconfigure.sh). The svn diff decribes what I modified from ffmpeg source svn rev. 14728.
I hope this codes are helpful to all PSP developers. But my source code is very very dirty because it started from a simple test application. PSPlayerMT was a source code cleanup version of this but it failed and discontinued.(It was just a battery hungry ogre, I think) And most of PSPlayerMT source code is just copied to main.cpp (after 2 year of sleep in a zipfile), making it a hell to readers.
subreader.h/c : copied from mplayer source and modified slightly to compile with it.
6. Special Thanks to
- Sakya : used support.prx to do... clock adjustment, display off, get volume level. His LightMP3 motivated me to upgrade PSPlayer using HW codecs after 2+ year of sleep.
- cooleyes : prototype for MP3/AAC/Mpeg4/H264 decoding using VME. PPA source code greatly helped coding of PSPlayer(esp. video player).
- TyRaNiD : PSPLink greatly helped monitoring, debugging of PSPlayer.
- and all other PSP developers
Sounds awesome, Download and Give Feedback Via Comments

This is why we can't have nice things. A short while ago, Euro gaming website Eurogamer announced that they Sony had made 5800 keys for the LittleBigPlanet European beta, and then they quickly disappeared under a raging tide of sack boy-hungry Europeans. The sheer numbers have brought the website to its knees - I've been trying to get there simply to get the link to entry page for the story and have had no luck whatsoever, and with the key offer requiring Eurogamer registration, both the front and and back end are getting completely slammed, bringing to mind a mental picture that I will quickly put out of my head.
Still, with the site being so crowded, you might just be able to wiggle your way in their and snag one before they're all gone. Kotakuite Richie Rich managed to, and he's downloading the beta as we speak, so if all else fails you can live vicariously through him. Good luck! What do you mean this is even more traffic? We're helping!

Heavy Rain is unique. Its story continues even if your character dies. This is super intriguing for several reasons.
So does that mean you have no chance to retry sections in case things didn't go the way you wanted them to? How can a game carry on if you die? Who really did shoot Bobby Ewing?
Quantic Dreams main man David Cage explained things a little to us. The good news is there will be a checkpoint system that'll let you retry, but Cage begs you not to rely on it.
"Yes, there will be the opportunity for players to reply as much as they want from where they want, but we would really like to encourage them not to do so - to continue to play with one story bearing with the consequences of their actions," he told us.
"This is what's exciting about it," he added. "This is a story that you told. It's pretty unique. So why would you want to do everything perfect and change what you've done. You will be able to redo what you like but we recommend not to."
The plot thickens. And appears to be made up as you go along...

In case you haven’t already figured it out, there is a new Punisher game coming! We here at Zen Studios are super excited to announce that we’re bringing Marvel’s storied franchise The Punisher to PLAYSTATION Network. Just a quick FYI – EVERYONE here at Zen Studios is a massive Marvel True Believer, so the entire team is on fire for this project.
We’re calling the game The Punisher: No Mercy because that’s exactly what it is – merciless. For the first time on consoles, you’ll see the Marvel Universe through a first-person perspective in some intense arena-based multiplayer action. Also, the game is being built from the ground up with some serious tech – yes, we are using the Unreal Engine 3 (the ultimate FPS engine) for this exclusive PSN release. Our main focus is to create an awesome online multiplayer experience with the style and grit from the Punisher’s world, complete with characters like Jigsaw, Bushwacker, Barracuda and even Silver Sable (been reading War Journal lately?…).
What does this mean for you gamers? You better get ready to kick some serious #$% with the first ever first-person shooter developed exclusively for PSN. Stay tuned for more details as they become available at www.punishernomercy.com. Because of the time difference here in Budapest, all of you who are craving more info can ask your questions in the comments area below, and I’ll have answers for you in another post soon.

Well, it’s been a while, but WipEout HD is almost out the studio door and on the virtual shelves of the PSN. What started life as a simple port has grown into a full-fledged game in its own right, with an extensive list of features. One of the things we’re very happy to support is PSN Trophies, 37 of them to be exact (well, 38 including Platinum)… and that’s what I’m going to talk a bit about today.
Internally, we decided to ensure our trophies covered four main areas - game progression, stat milestones, novelty and skill. You’ll notice these categories reflected in the actual visual look of the trophies themselves, as and when you earn them. There’s are good mix of stuff you’ll earn naturally (through playing ‘normally’), and some bespoke stuff you might have to set some time aside for. For example, you may never have thought of playing Zone Mode with just airbrakes up to Zone 50, but that’s what you’ll have to do if you want the silver ‘Airbreaker’ Trophy in your collection. Then there’s another type of trophy, which falls kind of between those two areas, like the gold ‘Beat Zico’ trophy.
Actually, I’ll go off on a little tangent here.
A few of us in the team had a long running competition with a very specific ruleset - Anulpha Pass/Forwards/Speed Lap/Venom/Pirahna. We were setting some impressive times. Every now and then someone would find a new tactic, a new line to take through a corner or another barrel roll opportunity, and shave a fraction of a second off the fastest time. We think we’ve found the optimal route now, so it’s all about a flawless execution of that line. We spent a lot of time on this competition, so we decided to make a trophy out of it. When it came to submitting the lap time, Zico Liu (one of our programmers) was top of the table, so he got the naming rights. Obtaining the gold ‘Beat Zico’ trophy is no easy task, so best of luck. Zico has since beaten his own time, and so has Stephen Taylor (another of our programmers), but like I say to them, Time Trials and Speed Laps are like punching a bag - nobody’s hitting you back. Online is where the big boys play, and I’m sure they’ll agree that that’s MY world. In fact I’d like to take this opportunity to trash talk some of our team - Ste, Zico, Tony, Col/s, Ian, Gaz, Matt/s, Sandy, James - I OWN you all.
I won’t go on about specifics and spoil them for you (although I’m sure the internet will do that given enough time), so I’ll leave it there. To summarize, WipEout HD has trophies. There’s one platinum, some gold, more silver and lots of bronze. There’s a good range of difficulty ranging from very easy to damn hard. I take my hat off to anybody that earns themselves the platinum ‘Transcendence’ trophy any time soon.
WipEout HD is available on 09/25 for $19.99. The team are very proud of this game and are just as happy as the fans to see this benchmark title finally get onto the PLAYSTATION Store. Oh, and don’t let the price tag fool you, WipEout HD is no run of the mill port. I can assure you that the PSN bar has been well and truly raised.
Thanks for your all your support and patience, it’ll be worth it.
