Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida has told VG247 that PS3 hasn’t yet seen explosive fortunes in Japan because the right software hasn’t yet been released for the machine.
“It’s mostly a software thing,” he said. “Price is important, but relative to the the value consumers perceive. There are lots of consumers, game fans in Japan, that are waiting to spend their money.
“What’s happening is that lack of support from the Japanese publishers - not necessarily from intentions but from development capabilities.”
Yoshida had previously said that Japanese publishers were struggling to keep up with the West in terms of games creation this generation thanks to a variety of factors such as team-size and an increase in graphical priority with current consoles.
The exec was speaking at Games Convention in Germany.

Martin Frain, marketing director for developer DICE says Mirror's Edge is proof that an IP can come out of nowhere and capture imagination, "just by being different." He is targeting worldwide sales of 3m.
"We're being helped immensely, just by the look of the game," Frain says. "You look at a screenshot of Mirror's Edge, and you know what it is."
Frain says that within most genres, all screenshots will look the same as other games in that same genre. "Some games do a good job with a unique look," he admits. "You see a screenshot of Bioshock, and you'd know it was Bioshock."
Mirror's Edge has that, too, Frain believes. "And we were quite frugal with our assets. So we had a lot of people questioning, 'What is this game about?'"
All these swirling questions, Frain continues, generated a lot of interest. "If it's not interesting, then you can withhold whatever you want - no one's going to talk about it."
"But I think if we'd flooded the market straight away," he concludes, "People would have become immune."

Following yesterday's announcement, Sony has revealed the first in-game shots of the new Unreal Engine 3-powered PSN exclusive, The Punisher: No Mercy.
Zen Studio's Zsolt Kigyossy says the team is working to get the most out of UE3. "We've licensed great technology and we're pushing it to the limits," he said.
"With the overall feel of The Punisher: No Mercy, we've included dark, smoky / hazy levels with realistic characters and environments, but we're still keeping several comic pages impressions that truly capture the essence of what fans have come to expect from the Punisher franchise.
Trophies are confirmed, as is a single-player story mode (that sounds similar to the arena-based, bot-fighting affair).
Kigyossy also had a go at explaining how you're supposed to pronounce his name. "Zs" is one letter, same as in Zsa Zsa Gabor. Pronouncing anything in my language is simple: one just needs to try to pronounce each letters (like in German), and it is done."
Okay, sure. Screens here, and more info on the PS Blog.

Burnout Paradise for the PlayStation 3 has updated again, this time delivering trophy support to achievement-hungry PS3 owners around the globe. Over sixty different trophies are available, spanning both the original game as well as the Cagney and Bikes updates, meaning that Burnout owners will have a ton of unlocking to get done, especially considering this sad news...
Burnout Paradise saves are locked to your profile. We had hoped to use this to retroactively award trophies, but we discovered during testing that this is not possible. You will therefore require a fresh game-save to receive trophies in Burnout Paradise. If you're familiar with PS3 trophies already, you'll recognise that this works in the same way as all other games that have added trophy support post-release.
Just goes to show, you really shouldn't announce good news until good news actually exists.

Have a look at these brand new Resistance 2 screenshots and we think you'll agree that Insomniac's latest is looking rather nice - if the in-game actions turns out like this, that is.
In some of the shots you can see two players blasting at the alien scum which must be taken from the separate co-op campaign promised, as well as a bunch of shots from the sweet-looking single-player quest.
The game, according to Insomniac CEO Ted Price, is "just about finished" and will be out in November.

A brand new total conversion mod for Quake is currently being created specifically for the PSP by a dedicated team of coders. The graphics are quite impressive and they are making some major modifications to the game engine's code to make it more "halo-like". Some of the features to be included are dual-wielding and high-res models.
The project is currently in a closed beta, but the screens and videos I've seen so far look excellent. Be sure to keep an eye on DCEmu, we'll be sure to let you guys know when a public beta gets released.

September 24th, 2008, 22:41 Posted By: wraggster
It’s a good idea to start off with the most general information. As it stands, it’s also the most alarming information:
2005 and 2006 look like a normal, strong trajectory for a new hardware platform. While releases on the system started off fairly slow as developers came to grips with the hardware, the growing installed base also grew the amount of software. As a result, 2006 saw over double the number of games as 2005.
By 2007, it would be reasonable to expect healthy growth in the number of releases yet again. Yet somehow, this is not the case; 2007 actually drops off in releases by a significant 17 percent.
Alone that would be pretty bad, but then 2008 creeps in. It’s important to recall several things about 2008; as noted on the previous page, the counting method differed here, which could lead to slight inconsistencies in the data. And of course, we've taken into account games that haven’t shipped yet and might be pushed back, but have no way of knowing about games that haven’t been announced yet that could see stealth releases—PlayStation Store games, for example.
Even taking this into account, the drop-off is so statistically significant that there’s no way to write it off. 2008 managed only slightly more releases than the PSP’s launch year, which was only ten months long. That’s a staggering 40 percent decrease compared to an already depressed 2007.
One can get a bit more detail by looking at the month-to-month release schedule, which fluctuates according to the expected industry cycles but definitely trends downward.
To avoid the natural seasonal depressions, it might be more instructive to pull out a single month from each year. March is a good example, because it’s been a busy one throughout the system’s life and allows comparison with solid 2008 data, instead of guessing with something like October. It looks almost identical to the yearly release data in the first graph, thus reinforcing the fact that things are looking bad for the PSP software support.

You may have stayed up a bit late last weekend – but not like 150 or so students at Parsons The New School for Design did. That’s how many talented/lucky/dedicated people participated in the 24-hour LittleBigPlanet GameJam.
The goal: produce the best level in that short amount of time.
The results: awesome enough to surprise even the Media Molecule representatives who were on-hand to help judge the results.
I spoke with MM’s Kareem Ettouney and Kenny Young shortly after the presentations. Pay close attention to their excitement – if levels this good can be made in 24 hours, imagine what you gamers will do in a week.
We’ll have the winners (Team Good Sportsmanship) back on the blog soon to share their LittleBigExperience, and best of all – you’ll be able to play all these levels once the game hits stores October 21.

September 24th, 2008, 20:38 Posted By: wraggster
My name’s Grant and I’m an animator for the BioShock Add-On Content Challenge Rooms. I was asked to spearhead any animation tasks that was needed for this project. The development team has been working hard here at 2K Boston on these new rooms and we are closing in on the finish line. But, it has been a great experience because it got me the chance to do things I haven’t done before for Bioshock.
One of our first goals was to get the Ferris Wheel in the game. The finished asset was actually physically in the original release of the game, but never used. It was a shame, because it’s a really well crafted piece. So I went through the steps of breaking it apart, rigging it and getting it to move convincingly. Then I had to learn some things about collision and getting the Little Sister to stay in the carriage without misbehaving. After a bit of elbow grease and sweat we got a functioning Ferris Wheel in engine. I hope you guys have fun playing in that room!
I also had to do quite a few more custom Little Sister animations. Revisiting the Little Sister rig from BioShock was a welcome assignment, and I found it somewhat cathartic to once again channel my inner child. My coworkers must have thought it odd when I would jump around my space and wave my arms to act out some of her moves. Actually they’re probably used to it by now.
The team worked really hard and it was fun diving into this project. I have to give props to Kirk Bezio (Add on content Designer), Chad King (Add on content Lead Artist) and Dan Kaplan (Add On content Programmer) in particular for their roles in getting this done. It almost felt like being back in school, except my peers weren’t students but big time pros.
Thanks for taking the time to read our post!

Newly released today:
The disappearance of a young marine biologist prompted you, a journalist to an investigation in the Kishira reefs, located in the southern pacific ocean.
The reef itself is a treasure chest full of rare fish and other sea creatures. By fully utilizing the graphical capabilities of the PlayStation3, the developers have brought 5000 types of such creatures alive to your home.
You have to solve the puzzles that surround the marine biologist's disappearance and find out the reason for his actions. Aside from creatures, the reefs contain a lot of spots to adventure in, such as sunken shrines and pirate ships. Besides the main task of locating the missing person, there are loads of other side quests for you to take on.
Take a walk in the undersea paradise and spend a holiday there.
