You had to know this sort of thing was coming: As you can see right after the break, Super Mario Bros.' World 1-1 has been replicated in the make-your-own-fun platformer, LittleBigPlanet. It's not exact (in fact, we wouldn't be surprised to see players trying to immediately trump it) but it's still adorable.
What's surprising, though, is that it appears to lose a bit in the fun department during translation. Of course, maybe this is more about the actual achievement. We should really stop looking a gift Sackboy in the mouth.

Hideo Kojima has said he already has three ideas for Metal Gear Solid 5. Only, he doesn't want the team to pick any of those because he doesn't want to get involved. He's stepping back, remember.
"I have three concepts for MGS5 already. What would be ideal for me with MGS5, though, is that we don't do those," Kojima told 1UP. "If the team picks one of those concepts, I have to get involved again, which I don't want to do.
"There are already so many good ideas from the staff, so if we select one of those, that would be really good. At that point I could really rely on them and take the step back to be the producer, which is the ideal situation, I think."
The renowned developer is far from finished with the industry, and will use the freed time to pursue an experimental idea born long ago.
"Well, I want to create something new, and it's difficult to explain since no one's seen it before. I don't know if it would sell very well," he said.
"I've been warming this up for a long time, and I keep thinking that I'll try this idea. But ideas always change, so I really don't know what the final outcome will be."

Sony has confirmed to GamesIndustry.biz that PlayTV has shipped 85,000 units to retailers in the UK.
The hardware add-on, which acts as a freeview box and personal video recorder, went on sale last weekend and retails for GBP 69.99.
Pre-orders for the peripheral were around 9000 according to Sony. Momentum is building in the run up to Christmas, with specialist and national press giving thumbs up to the device, which strengthens the PlayStation 3's status as a multimedia hub for the living room.
The hardware is being rolled-out across the rest of Europe until December, but there are currently no plans to release PlayTV in the US.

With third-party PSP support dwindling and becoming increasingly coveted -- even by Sony's own Shuhei Yoshida -- it seems that a new plan of action is in order for the high-tech, twice-revised handheld. Speaking to Edge Online, SCEA's director of hardware marketing, John Koller, provided just such a strategy: "You cannot have ports."
Sony hopes to guide publishers and developers down a better path, enabling them to produce PSP games that take a cue from their console versions, but leave the identical content and gameplay behind. "The recipe for success on the PSP resides simply in providing franchise games that are strong brand names like on consoles, but have unique gameplay on the system," said Koller, listing Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, God of War: Chains of Olympus and the forthcoming Midnight Club as titles that stand on their own, despite their recognized branding.
Koller went on to predict that 2009 would see "significant growth" for the PSP, with "a number of very strong franchise games" on the way and revitalized hardware sales bringing publishers back from the brink. And who knows? Maybe those persistent petitioners will finally get their Assassin's Creed PSP game.

We recently mentioned an event at the Parsons New School for Design and Technology in which students were divided into teams, given copies of LittleBigPlanet, and had 24 hours to develop levels for the game. GameSetWatch has the story of how the design contest went, what the winners and other notable finishers designed, and how the judges were surprised that "what they played could be completed in 24 hours." Further coverage is available at GameSpot, including a videos of several different levels. "Team Good Sportsmanship's level consisted of a single massive moving monster. SackBoy had to find his way up the monster, go through its digestive track while dodging stomach acid and eventually get on top of its head. The level featured an anatomical tour of the beast, complete with rib cage, beating heart even a dangling uvula. Once the player made it up to the brain, there was a hand-drawn animation of what the beast was thinking: eating SackBoy. Once the player got past the teeth and used the tongue to lob themselves on top of the monster's snout, the level was over."

Of late, there has been quite a bit of press circulating which suggests that Blu-ray isn't faring too well. At that head of those sentiments was a Samsung UK director named Andy Griffiths, who casually predicted that BD only had about five good years of life remaining. Unsurprisingly, senior VP of corporate communications at Sony Rick Clancy has hit back with an epic tale of why the format is actually not nearing its end. In fact, he suggests that Blu-ray will eventually live harmoniously with digital downloads, and he forecast that BD has "perhaps a decade" of growth to come. He also snuck in a few plugs for his PS3 and BRAVIA HDTVs, but more on the point, he essentially stated that not enough of the world had broadband (yet) for downloadable content to pose a real threat. Right, because the vast majority of the globe definitely has a few C-notes to lay on a BD player. We're only kidding (kind of).

September 25th, 2008, 23:35 Posted By: wraggster
On Tuesday, we published a report that PSP software support from third-parties has been on a steady decline since 2006, a trend that, if continued, would lead to the abandonment of the system entirely. To get Sony’s take on the data we spoke to SCEA director of hardware marketing John Koller, who explained what caused the decline and why it will reverse in 2009.
Koller acknowledged the reality of the situation. “On the software side we’ve been very open about the fact that there are fewer games this year,” he said, alluding to earlier comments made by Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida. According to Koller, the major reason for 2008’s slow schedule comes down to the nature of the development cycle, relative to slower PSP hardware sales in 2006.
“Decisions made 20-22 months ago from a development cycle perspective are affecting the quantity of titles available today,” Koller explains. “20-22 months ago developers and publishers were looking at the PSP hardware and thinking ‘It’s not selling as well, maybe it’s time to move our resources elsewhere.’” Koller also mentions that publishers and developments were also measuring the viability of the then very new next generation consoles at the time.
Koller also stated that publishers were not familiar with how demographics were shifting on the PSP, leading to improperly targeted games that did not meet sales expectations. “When we launched the PSP it launched at a 28-year old, heavily male, New York subway [demographic], and that slowly trended down. Now we’re in the mid-teens with a lot of tracking even younger than that. Our research shows that in the next 12 months young moms actually are set to have the highest propensity to purchase the hardware and software for their young children.”
As a result, Koller says, “a lot of publishers that were making mature-rated games that were ports from console found they weren’t selling very well.” He calls the old PSP software release trend of ports a “failed strategy” in general.
In order to get third parties on the same page, Koller reveals that Sony has been on a six to nine month “road show.” Visiting all major publishers, this tour sought to “calibrate and educate” game makers on the PSP, where it’s headed, and Sony’s “recipe for success” for software on the system.
“The recipe for success on the PSP resides simply in providing franchise games that are strong brand names like on consoles, but have unique gameplay on the system,” Koller describes. “You cannot have ports. We used God of War: Chains of Olympus this year as an example of that, as well as Final Fantasy VII: Crisis Core, and Midnight Club, which is going to be launching in the next few weeks. Those three games are titles that have very strong brand names on console but are coming over with unique gameplay on the PSP.”
The other component is, of course, the PSP’s strong hardware sales. Koller points out that, “hardware sales were down in 2006, but they rebounded very strongly in the first half of 2007,” thanks in part to the price drop in April of that year. And sales have stayed strong as Sony has kept the hardware fresh with updates that helped to “excite the market.”
“We’ve gone to every publisher and they’ve been noticing the hardware is on fire,” he says.
So Sony has been working hard, and Koller things that the fruits of that labor will appear in 2009. “I think going into next year we’re going to see significant growth. We’re counseling retail to be ready for it. We have a number of very strong franchise games on the docket that will be launching next year. We haven’t gone public with those, and many third-parties have not yet either because they’re concentrating on holiday, but we have a number of very strong titles coming.”

News from Art
Hi Guys,
Here's a demo YouTube video of my latest project made possible with the PSP
Flite speech engine provided by mypspdev.
This GPS Text to speech demo is a very early test program for an eventual program
that will compliment my Garmin GPSMAP 60CSX with a text to speech feature,
and also provide an extra navigation screen on the PSP so that the GPS unit
can display the map screen (thus, I see two different screens at once).
As per forum rules, no WIP threads without screenshot or video... here's the video:
http://au.youtube.com/watch?v=sYBPQp5Vybw
I don't really anticipate anyone here will use it, but maybe interesting to see.
I think the finished program will be pretty good.
Cheers, Art.

News from Uberjack
It’s been four days since the release of RACE!, and I’ve gotten no negative feedback regarding the save state feature, and only 1 confirmation that it works as expected. I’ve been doing a considerable amount of testing with Sonic: Pocket Adventure myself, and so far haven’t encountered any issues.
While the lack of comments (positive or otherwise) is surprising, it’s not necessarily disappointing — I’ll just assume that where there’s no smoke, there’s no fire. Still, it would be great to know what your experience was; whether state restored correctly, or not. If you tested the feature, please post your experience in the forum — include the name of any games you may have tested.

Panic adverted! Yesterday, we brought word that there are currently fewer third party PSP titles — leading some to say devs are "abandoning" the platform. Not entirely so! As Sony's John Koller explains, the reason is that there's a decline is PSP games is that “Decisions made 20-22 months ago from a development cycle perspective are affecting the quantity of titles available today." Oh, so third party companies were abandoning the PSP, but now they're not. Whew. Optimistic, Koller adds:
I think going into next year we’re going to see significant growth. We’re counseling retail to be ready for it. We have a number of very strong franchise games on the docket that will be launching next year. We haven’t gone public with those, and many third-parties have not yet either because they’re concentrating on holiday, but we have a number of very strong titles coming.
There's even been a demographic change for the PSP: Sony research says that over the next 12 months, young mothers will have the "highest propensity" to buy the handheld for their young children. Not exactly the urban hipsters it was originally targeted at.
