September 19th, 2008, 14:38 Posted By: Zack
So after I finally got my ass into gear, we now have Wolfenstein V5.1 beta released
Why is it a beta ?
Well my tester Da1writer is currently moving house and thus I have only being able to test this myself. So it could be buggy, things could have broken etc.
Also I haven't added most of the requested features yet. As I want to see if the main fixes are stable first so bug tracking will be easier.
What are the changes ?
Well a few major ones
1st : The sound tempo is now how people remember it. There is still debate whether or not this is correct, and that Windows 98 or Dosbox could be running the game too slow, but to be honest It doesn't bother me. I want to make the game play how you remember it.
2nd : The Saving/Loading corruption bug has being fixed. This has not being tested thoroughly and may still be broken or buggy. I really need you guys to test the hell out of this for me
3rd : The Game Loader has been Re-Written from scratch. It now has a much neater GUI and also now sports a Confirm option. So you don't press X by mistake, load the wrong game and have to go all the way to the xmb and start over.
Also, Music and sound effects have been removed from the Game Loader to make the download smaller and to save more space on your Memory stick
Note : The confirm box in the middle only shows after you press X on the game you want to load , Pressing O goes back, the box goes away and you can pick a different game. Thanks to Roscharch for the image and idea!
Here is a screenshot of the new Game Loader :
Here is the ChangeLog For V5.1 Beta :
So please test this hard! And report any bugs here or at the thread on RetroEmu.
Source Included as usual, but now in a separate zip file to save download file size for people who have no interest in source code
Note : Wolf3D Floppy patch (attached below) is still needed for users that use the Wolf3D Floppy files.
Enjoy
Screenshot of Wolf3D for those that don't know what it is :

gr8npwrfl has posted some exceedingly interesting news:
Well here is the proof of concept you have been waiting for
This is the prototype USB Host to serial interface
This is a AT90USB1287 chip from Atmel. IT has not only a
standard USB device interface but it has the USB Host
interface.
This is their prototype board that sells for $34.00 and
is ready to run as it comes from Digikey, Mouser, or
Arrow.
I placed it in a box to make it easier to handle as the
entire proto board is only 3 inches by 1 inch.
The two connectors on the front of the board allow me to
plug in cables. One to the PSP and another to a RS232
converter so I can send data to the PC.
I currently have completed the USB mouse driver and a
USB Keyboard driver. I am currently debugging the gamepad
drivers for the XBOX 360 wireless gamepad, the PS2/PS3
wireless gamepad, and the Logitech Wingman wireless gamepad.
All of the interfaces require the installation of Pikey
onto your PSP.
THERE ARE NO HARDWARE MODS TO THE PSP AT ALL!
IT works on both the Phat and the Slim
Here is a picture of the cables that I have made up to
work with the PSP Phat.
Again there are no hardware mods to anything. The keyboard,
mouse, joysticks are stock USB devices. That means when you are
not using them with your PSP you can use them other places.
I am working on the Pikey software to make the key mapping work
with my system. The external keyboard or gamepads will be able
to map to ANY PSP internal button or joystick. You will be able
to have multiple mapping files, one for each game of your choice
and map the buttons/sticks any way you want.
Enough talk, here is a video showing the system in action. The
final design will not have a battery, I am putting together a
2.5/1.8 volt to 5 volt converter so everything is powered from
the PSP.
If you want a real leg up with working with the AT90USB familly processors then you need to go to MyUSB. It gives you a fully functional USB host stack for these processors.
All my code is built on these as a base. There are fully functional demos of several HID devices as well as mass storage devices. They also have a software development board to help you with developing your own USB applications.
Between this board and the standard documentation on USB device drivers you can start writing your own drivers for USB devices.
Another hint, if you want to write a device driver for something there is not a driver for then check out to see if there is a driver for it in the linux community. You can use it as a template to develop your own driver around and make your life much simpler.
With these resources, even if you have never written a device driver you are well on your way.
MyUSB support list:
http://groups.google.com/group/myusb-support-list
AT90USB developers forum:
http://www.avrfreaks.net/
There are two approaches to using an external processor through the serial port.
1. Interface to the USB device and send the raw data in the serial port
and interface to the data on the PSP side.
2. Interface to the USB device, process and configure the data and send
only the results to the PSP.
Since I am sending my keyboard data to Pikey on the PSP side, I did not want to modify that software and put more overhead on the PSP which can cause other side effects and problems.
My keyboard interface reads the USB scan codes from the keyboard and then in flash memory I maintain the translation table to Ascii. The only app that I am writing for the PSP is to be able to send custom translation
tables to be stored in the remote cpu flash.
Also like remotejoy that allowed the gamepad to be mapped to keyboard keys, I am interfacing the external gamepads to the keyboard translation table so you can have button reassignment to your hearts content.
All the burden and overhead does not consume resources on the PSP and does not slow down the system.
After the keyboard and gamepad is done, I have so much more power left in the external cpu I was thinking about taking two of the A/D converters and building a frequency discriminator so I can build a micro based sub woofer amp for the speaker output that is already being sent to my interface.

Remember how you were going to be able to invite other PlayStation 3 owners to your virtual apartment in Home, then watch videos together? That's not happening, at least not in the "open beta."
I got a demo of the latest beta version of PlayStation Home, Sony's upcoming PS3 virtual world, Tuesday. My full impressions are coming soon, but the biggest news to come out of our conversation was that the video-sharing feature has been killed, at least for the first public release of Home this fall.
Video sharing was one of the most talked-about features of Home when it was announced in 2007 -- not only because it would be awesome to go to someone's apartment and watch whatever movie they'd cued up, but because of the legal implications of such a feature that Sony was shrugging off.
While PlayStation Home director Jack Buser said the company was "looking into" adding the feature, he also said that Sony's approach to "user-generated content" was likely to be more of a "Lego-block" structure, in which Sony gives users the parts and lets them create what they want from a predetermined set of tools.
In other words, while Sony isn't saying whether video sharing will ever happen, it doesn't exactly sound like a system that provides for letting users stream videos off their PS3's hard drives.
More news about Home later.

EA has announced a release date for the console versions of Mirror's Edge.
The PS3 and Xbox 360 versions will launch on 14th November, and pre-orders will begin next Friday 26th September.
EA is also planning a demo before release, which will feature the game's prologue, including the tutorial and a taster of the single-player story mode.
Plus, if you pre-order the game at "selected retailers", you'll get an exclusive code to unlock the demo's time trial mode. Then you can upload your fastest times to the leaderboards, and compete against your friends' ghosts.
So what of the PC version? According to EA, it'll be out "later in the winter". There's no word on when we can expect to see that exclusive downloadable content for the PS3 version, either, but we'll keep you posted.

Sony and developer David Jaffe have been sued for allegedly copying other people's ideas in the God of War series of games.
No, not the original Greek myths, but the works of two Californians with strange surnames: Jonathan Bissoon-Dath and Jennifer Barrette-Herzog.
The main claim of the suit, according to GamePolitics, is that the pair had sent their work - including a screenplay - to Sony Pictures, as well as agents that deal with Sony Computer Entertainment America, back in 2002.
The double-barrelled duo note that God of War 1 was released in 2005, and that David Jaffe said the game took three years to develop. Whoops.
Pages of similarities between the fictional works of the duo and the God of War games were also listed.
These mention a champion picked by Zeus and Athens to defend against the invading army of Ares; a champion whose family is hacked to death; a champion whose weapons resemble the two glowing sword-hands of Zeus; and a champion who has to cross a sagging bridge over a bottomless chasm.
Sony and Jaffe, of course, deny all allegations and seek reimbursement for any money shelled out on lawyers and nice suits to wear in court.

via Games Industry
Xbox 360 developer Peter Molyneux has said that the PlayStation 3 is still waiting for the handful of games that will define the console in the eyes of the consumer.
Speaking in an exclusive interview published today, the Lionhead boss noted that the Wii already has its two defining games, and he hopes his latest title – Fable 2 – could be a game synonymous with the Xbox 360.
"It is always one or two games which define a platform - it's the same for the Wii, and the PlayStation 2," offered Molyneux.
"I think the PlayStation 3 is still waiting for that definition title that represents the platform - and I think that's what hardware manufacturers need to do, find that defining title.
"Nintendo did a brilliant job of doing that at launch with games like Wii Sports and Wii Play - maybe Fable 2 is a defining title. But you are talking to the proud father of this game, so you can't ask me to be tremendously objective," he added.
Fable 2 for the Xbox 360 is set to release the week before LittleBigPlanet for the PlayStation 3, and Molyneux believes the game – developed by former Lionhead staff – could be one of the titles that will define Sony's console by enticing new audiences to videogames.
"I'm incredibly proud of what they've done, and it's just an amazing experience to see how their game has progressed," he said.
"If we want to bring people in who haven't played games before, wherever they are in the world and whatever their cultural background, whatever their sex or age, then we've got to think out of the box and start creating stuff which fascinates those people. I think LBP could be one of those."
The full interview with Peter Molyneux can be read here.

Soft Image is running a detailed story about the making of Metal Gear Solid 4. They explain the game's development cycle, from the art direction to the animation of characters to the building of models and textures.
"In terms of bones used for constructing the bodies of characters, about 21 joint bones were used that contained animation data and were activated through these data. But many auxiliary bones were also used to supplement movements such as the twisting of knees, elbows, legs and arms. These were not activated by animation data. Rather, they were linked to the values of the basic joints that were activated by animation. ... They also used a tool to automatically generate the rig for controlling eyeball movement and the muscles around the eyes. Because the area around the eyes is also controlled using both shapes and bones, when the eyeball locator is moved, the muscles move smoothly just like they do for the mouth. Further, even if the shape is edited to redefine the eye edges, it does not spoil the blinking or brow furrow expressions at all."

We've been intrigued by Sony's PlayStation Home concept for, like, ever now, but considering just how long the thing has been delayed, we're trying to avoid any contact with pre-launch fodder in order to keep our hopes low. That being the case, we realize not all of you care to safeguard your hearts in the way we have ours, so we felt it prudent -- nay, necessary -- to pass along PS3 Fanboy's in-depth walkthrough of the service. SCEA's Jack Buser recently took the time to sit down and open up for a marvelous preview of the Plaza, Game Space and lots of other nooks and crannies we're sure you're interested in venturing into. To the read link, we send you. Try not to get lost, okay?

Ben Heck writes, Aside from the 2 I built for a show back in May, the 3rd pedal demonstrated below is the first I’ve actually built by request for a customer. He knew the secret to getting a Ben project - diligent (yet not annoying) emails and patience! Plus he can play Guitar Hero on Hard, something I cannot. (Rock Band, yes)
In other related news the Access Controller should be arriving for shipment sometime next week… more details to come.
