New from SuccessHK and on worldwide import too:
To commemorate the 20th anniversary of Final Fantasy's debut, Square Enix round up the heroes and anti-heroes from their star RPG series and have them participate in a battle royale. Belonging to the camp of the god of peace Cosmos and the god of struggles Chaos, the 20 characters are pit against each other in fighting tournaments.
The concept of winning a fight is simple, unleash a string of attacks and deplete the HP bar of your opponent. The higher your hit rate is, the more brave points you store and the more special attacks you can launch. What sure kill attacks you can employ depend on your characters.
Pit your favourites against generations of FF characters and find out who the strongest is amongst you.

No surprise here unless you were expecting two CyberConnect2 games revealed in a row or something. Sometime in the future .hack//Link is coming to the PSP and the judging by the silhouettes we’re going to see a lot of returning characters from the .hack series. .hack//Link is going to be like .hack//Series Reunion.

Resistance: Retribution could very well be one of the biggest PSP titles of the year, and now folks who pre-order from select retailers will get to play it a couple of months ahead of time.
Customers who pre-order Resistance: Retribution for the PSP from GameStop, Amazon, Best Buy, or Game Crazy will receive a voucher code that allows them to download a demo of the game from the PlayStation Store to their PSP. The demo consists of some single-player gameplay along with the opportunity to try out the Resistance Connect multiplayer modes.
While some might worry over the fact that you have to pre-order the game to access the demo, just keep this in mind: A pre-order can be canceled, but a downloaded demo is forever, sort of.

It may look like an isometric-view depiction of the "Thriller" video featuring flight attendants, but the game pictured above is actually the original Revelations: Persona -- which, according to a rumor reported on 1UP, is being remade by Atlus for PSP.
Hong Kong games mag GameWave reports that said remake of the game -- which eventually spawned last year's superb Persona 4 -- will release in Japan on April 30, 2009 for ¥5,040 ($57). 1UP points out that GameWave has been dead-on with previous reports on pending PSP announcements, lending this rumor a little more weight than usual. We've followed up with Atlus' US branch, who remained tight-lipped.

These are the pictures of the finished product of the XCM Dominator Joystick for the Playstation 3 / PS3 by XCM. These should be shipping early to mid next week to official retailers.
Description: This is a new joystick for the Playstation 3 console and includes features such as rapid fire / turbo and a macro mode which will allow you to program in up to 20 steps to perform any special moves during a game to one of 4 memory slots each with its own button (M1,M2,M3,M4). To access the programmed combo you simply need to press the corresponding memory key (M1-4) and the combo will be performed for you. This will come in very handy with fighting style games as most moves and combos can take quite a few different combination of buttons and joystick movements to perform. The joystick is also lighted with blue leds and is encased in a sleek translucent black case.

We've been following PSP Phone rumors since 2006, forever on a tech timeline. A plausible device given the natural evolution of mobile gaming and Sony's proven desire to cross-license its Bravia and Cyber-shot brands for use on other Sony Ericsson phones. Not so fast buster. Mobile Today (citing "several sources close to the matter") is reporting that Sony Ericsson has been refused the use of the PlayStation brand by Sony Corp. after pitching the business case in December. A spokesperson for Sony Ericsson wouldn't comment directly on the matter but did say, "In the past, we have been keen that our product proposition lives up to brand promise, and we feel at the moment the technical specs are not high enough to put such a prestigious brand on a phone." With Sony Ericsson posting a massive $346 million dollar loss today compared to the $95 million expected, well, maybe Sony's wisdom shouldn't be questioned. Then again, Sony's not doing much better.

While the future of the Yakuza series outside of Japan may be in question, on Sega's home turf, the Toshihiro Nagoshi adventure series is a guaranteed hit. Sega is continuing to invest in some heavy promotions for the latest entry.
The company announced today a tie-up with discount retailer Don Quijote to help promote Yakuza 3. Starting January 23, Don Quijote retailers throughout Japan will begin putting up posters for the game. These posters will have a QR code which can be scanned into a cell phone to access some free wallpapers.
The promotions kick into high gear on February 26, the day of Yakuza 3's release. On that day , Don Quijote shops will begin offering plastic bags with Yakuza 3 imagery. Two bags will be on offer, one just for Yakuza 3 and one for both the game and the Koakuma Ageha magazine whose models are being used as the game's virtual hostesses.
The connection to Don Quijote is deeper than this. If you've played Yakuza 1 or its still-Japan-only sequel, you'll recognize the retailer as having appeared in digital form in the game. Today, Sega shared screenshots of the Yakuza 3 implementation of the shop, which you can see in our latest media update.

via Eurogamer
Square Enix president Yoichi Wada has told Reuters that Final Fantasy XIII will not be released outside Japan until April 2010 or later.
However, the PlayStation 3 version of FFXIII is still set for release this year in Japan.
The Reuters wire copy, which showed up on The Guardian's site yesterday, doesn't quote Wada on FFXIII's release date but does attribute the guidance directly to him.
Square Enix has previously said that development of the Xbox 360 version of FFXIII - announced at E3 2008 - will not begin until the PS3 version is completed.
Given Wada's comments, there will doubtless be renewed speculation as to whether Square Enix has committed to launching the two versions side by side in Europe rather than giving the completed Sony SKU a headstart on its rival.
FFXIII was originally unveiled at E3 all the way back in 2006, and returns to the Active Time Battle system, although no doubt with lessons learned from the excellent FFXII on PS2.
We've contacted Square Enix in Europe to see what else is stewing.

YouTube has launched a fancy version of its website tailored specially for PlayStation 3 and Wii owners using television displays.
Direct browsers to www.youtube.com/tv to access the new service, which has bigger and clearer text as well as a simplified layout for easier navigation.
The videos appear larger than they do on regular YouTube, but don't appear to be of any higher quality, leading to quite blocky clips.
Those eager for a look on PC need to install Firefox and the Download User Agent Switcher. Once that's done, go to Tools, User Agent Switcher, Options and type "Mozilla/5.0 (PLAYSTATION 3; 2.00)" in the user agent field. Assuming you're as boring as we are.
Switch to that new agent you will be able to view the YouTube TV website.

via Games Industry
Sony has said it's confident of its momentum going in to 2009 following a rise in full-year PlayStation 3 sales of 40 per cent.
Over 3.6 million PS3 units were sold during 2008 in the US, with NPD data showing that 726,005 units were sold during December.
PS3 software sales reached almost 6 million units in December, and grew 116 per cent for the full year. Hit titles included LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2, Call of Duty: World at War and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.
"We remain confident in our momentum into 2009 as we continue to deliver to our consumers the best entertainment content and technology out there," commented Peter Dille, SVP of marketing and PSN.
"And we delivered on that promise this past year with one of the best software line-ups in the industry, a dramatically expanded PlayStation Network with the launch of the video delivery service and the beta of PlayStation Home, as well as extended hardware offerings with the PSP 3000 and Uncharted 160GB PS3 bundle.
"We also hit a remarkable milestone for the PlayStation 2 platform in North America with 50 million units sold. It’s truly an amazing testament to the power and legacy of our brand," he added.
According to Sony, the top three most downloaded games in December via its PSN service were Super Street Fighter II Turbo HD Remix, Soldner-X: Himmelssturmer and Linger in Shadows.
With more than 17 million users signed to the service, 330 million pieces of content have been downloaded via PSN.
The PSP sold 1.02 million units in December, with more than 3.7 million games sold for the system. The top two games for 2008 on the PSP were Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII and God of War: Chains of Olympus, selling a combined 1.31 million units.
According to Sony, the PlayStation brand generated more than USD 6.4 billion in revenue in the US during 2008.

Hong Kong gaming magazine GameWave, in their latest issue (dated January 22nd), claims to have information on a very interesting upcoming Japanese PSP game: a port of the original PS1 Persona. While the information hasn't been confirmed just yet, GameWave was also the source to break the news about the releases of both Disgaea 2 and Mobile Suit Gundam: Bonds of the Battlefield for PSP. So, their track record for PSP info seems to be pretty decent, especially give that the magazine even goes so far as to give the product number for the PSP Persona release (ULJM05422).
So, what can we expect from the game? The extent of the port is not yet known, including if this will indeed be more of a straight port or may lean more towards the "remake" side of things. However, supposedly we will be getting some new characters, along with additional storyline elements and scenarios. The release is said to hit in Japan on April 30th, with a pricepoint of 5040 yen. (I'd give the dollar conversion, but really, the yen/dollar rate right now makes me too sad to even think about it.)
If you recall our interview with Persona 4 director Katsura Hashino (and if you don't, go read it here), he did say that Atlus had "various plans for the Persona series," so this indeed could be one of them. Hopefully Atlus of Japan will give some sort of official confirmation soon, and then we can wait for the day when Atlus USA hopefully announces a North American release.

Apogee posted this news for DS and PSP Fans:
Both the DS and PSP versions of the game are coming along nicely. On the DS side the graphics are blowing the socks off everyone who sees it (those lucky few outside the company that have seen it), and on the PSP, they say the depth of view is the best they have seen to date for that device. Development is proceeding at a feverish pace on both systems. There has been implementation of some unique features specific to each system that owners will be glad to see. We are also including some cool bonus game play features that we haven’t spoken about that we feel will enhance the overall way the game is played. That’s all we can say for now, other than stay tuned, more info in greater detail is on the way!

JJS has released a new version PSPdisp v0.2
This program package lets you use a Playstation Portable as an additional monitor under Windows.
Information:
So what is this about? Well, it basically gives you an additional monitor with a 960x544 resolution (four times the area of the PSP display). There are four components working together, on Windows a display driver, an usb driver and the interface application which captures the screen, compresses it and sends it over USB to the PSP. On the PSP side there is an application that decompresses the frames and displays them. All settings are adjustable from the Windows side, the PSP really only acts as a passive display.
Requirements:
PSP: Either slim or phat model running a custom firmware (reported working on 3.40-OEA, M33 version 3.52, 3.71, 3.90, 4.01, 5.00).
PC: Reasonably modern PC (Pentium 4 / Athlon64 or above, multi-core processor recommended) running Windows 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista, Server 2008 in either 32 bit or 64 bit version. Note that there is no PSPdisp display driver available for Vista, but existing displays can be mirrored.
Installation:
Download the installer package below and execute it. The installer works for all supported platforms and will install the correct 32 bit or 64 bit drivers.
If you want to manually install the drivers, you can extract the setup files with an unzip tool (like 7zip).
Important! If you uninstall a previous version you have to restart the computer before starting the new setup. Otherwise the new display driver will be uninstalled on the next restart and you have to install it again!
Note that the usb and the display driver are not WHQL certified. Windows will present you with a security warning because of that.
Download
Changelog:
v0.2
New features:
- can now mirror any existing display
- works on 64 bit systems now
- display driver for Windows XP x64
- display driver supports several display modes from 480x272 to 1920x1080
- all resolutions also available rotated by 90° (portrait mode)
- additional "Follow mouse" mode
- selectable viewport size for "Follow mouse" and "Static" view
- viewport may be rotated by 90, 180 or 270 degree
- reacts on display settings changes, no restart necessary
- multi-threaded, opening the menue will no longer freeze the display
- PSP can be unplugged and replugged while PSPdisp is enabled
- added option to automatically enable PSPdisp when the PSP is plugged in
- installer can now copy the game files to the PSP
- mapping mouse and keyboard buttons to the PSP controls
- experimental Wlan support
Bug fixes:
- installer bug marking the display driver for uninstall
- stuttering display on some usb chipsets
- "libusb0.dll not found" error when the usb driver is only preinstalled
- display miniport driver failing to load on Windows 2000 (Thanks Raul!)
- failure to retrieve the display positions when enabling the PSPdisp display the first time
Known issues:
- if the Wlan connection is interrupted it will hang the PSP and Windows application
- enabling PSP control may interfere with mouse and keyboard operation
v0.1
Initial release.

So far, Sony has not made any official announcements regarding the next version of its portable system -- if another version is even planned in the first place. However, considering how susceptible the internet is to rumors, gamers have pointed to a survey on PSP Fanboy which Sony apparently released in order to poll users on what they want to see in Sony products. Besides things like better Home integration and various Bluetooth support items, the survey mentions a touch screen for the PSP. That's really all there is to this rumor thus far, but this survey could indicate that Sony is at least aware of consumer desire for touch screen implementation, which could lead to interesting developments down the line.
A Sony representative was not available to confirm the validity of the survey or to comment on its implications.

Dasda just released his version of a PUP file unpacker, the un_pup 1.0. It's coded in C and licensed under the GNU GPL v3.
Just a small command-line application I hacked together, all it does is output information and properly extract Update Packages. I did this mainly because of my research, and this one can easily be compiled on almost any platform where GCC has been ported. It's released under GPLv3.
PS. I know the code is kinda dirty and I'm calling multiple functions twice, but it's good and it handles errors (except for the strcmp, sch!). Expect a cleaned up version later, version 1.1. ;-)
