Tri-Ace’s multiplatform RPG, End of Resonance of Fate, is going international and Sega sent out a trailer for the Western version. Most of the footage is recycled, but the domestic presentation is quite different.
Both trailers open with a mysterious melody. Japan’s trailer follows up with an epic score while the North American movie has music that sounds like it was mixed by the Black Mages.
The soundtrack isn’t necessarily bad. Neither is the presentation. It’s just interesting how the same game feels different overseas. White Knight Chronicles, another Japanese RPG, went through a similar transition.
Hmm… are mainstream publishers like Sega and Sony Computer Entertainment America afraid their RPGs share too many common themes with other Japanese RPGs and are trying to make them, at least in ads, appear more Western?

Acquire is pushing the Class of Heroes series big time by associating it with pop singers and making a mini anime. Pre-order Class of Heroes 2 in Japan and you get an anime DVD as a gift.
J-Pop group Sphere does the voices for the four anime characters. They also sing the game’s theme song, “Dangerous Girls”. These are typical promotions in Japan, but as a publisher Acquire rarely backs their games with a big marketing boost.
Sphere will also talk about the game’s theme and world on a special Class of Heroes radio show. A pop group acting as the official spokespeople for a dungeon crawling RPG? I wonder if this is a first.
Either way Acquire is investing heavily in Class of Heroes 2. It seems like Acquire has high hopes that Class of Heroes will graduate as one of their key franchises.

Capcom has released the first in a series of video tutorials for Monster Hunter Freedom Unite on the PlayStation Portable, in which a man with far too thick an accent discusses porcupines.
At least I think he said porcupines. The narrator, assumedly one of the four expert monster hunters from Capcom's Encyclopedia Gigantica website, explains how to get started on the path to becoming a master hunter. Unfortunately the gentleman's accent is a bit hard to get past, and at one point I am pretty sure he said something about spending my porcupines, which is silly. If I had porcupines I certainly wouldn't spend them.

Even in this crazy Kotec world it's refreshing to know the sun still rises in the east, Wheaties is still the breakfast of champions and Koei and the Dynasty Warriors are still best buds. Some things, you see, never change.
The latest in Koei's venerable action strategy franchise, Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires, will arrive on June 23 for both the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, promising character editing and a return to series' button mashing heroics set in China's good old days. Equally ancient is the game's multiplayer mode, with just two players supported offline and apparently no online mode at all. Still, with its boots stuck in history, it sort of completes the symmetry to have the whole experience cemented in the distant past.

The Sony Ericsson PlayStation phone may for the time being remain a speculative possibility, but the chances just got a whole load better with the news that Sony Ericsson is to drop both its Walkman and Cybershot brands in favour of a unified entertainment offering.
The Swedish manufacturer had previously segregated its handsets into a number of camps, the leading two of which were the ‘C’ and ‘K’ Cybershot photography-related devices and its ‘W’ Walkman-branded MP3 mobiles.
Whilst other categories such as its lifestyle ‘T’ series and high-tech ‘X’ range have focused on various segments, gaming has yet to win its own branding, with most leading games handsets (such as the W705) being amalgamated under the Walkman banner.
However, Marketing reports that the continually converging handset market has forced the company to unify its various technologies under a single branding. Head of global marketing business management Andre Jacquet has used the term ‘Entertainment Unlimited’. However, this sounds very much like a marketing term and not a product brand.
Sony Ericsson president Hideki Komiyama said earlier this month that a PlayStation phone “could still happen”. Is this latest move taking us a step closer to that reality?

The PS2 has an impressive catalogue of not only "regular games", but also PC gal games (think Japanese dating sims) ported over with the adult scenes edited out.
Called "visual novels", these games are more reading intensive than anything else. There is a small, yet rabid, market for them; however, PS3 hasn't exactly been fertile ground for visual novels.
A recent Japanese magazine article on "gal games" points out three reasons why these games aren't coming to the PS3:
1. Titles need to sell 30,000 copies.
2. The games need online capabilities.
3. Graphics need to high-def.
Stumbling blocks for developers accustomed to easy PS2 ports. Granted, these rules aren't written in stone, and erotic tentacle game Tears to Tiara has proved there is a market for these types of games on the PS3. As the console install base grows, we expect the number of these erotic-tinged games to get bigger.

AQ Interactive is over Cry On and consoles. They only plan on publishing one Wii game this fiscal year and it’s Ju-On. All of the other titles in their lineup are for portables.
The Song Generation, a music game with tunes from 80’s, comes out in June. Two other Nintendo DS games and four PSP games are in the pipeline.
That’s a huge surge in PSP development. AQ Interactive has a grand total of two PSP games under their belt, neither was released overseas. None of their portable titles in development are slated for an international release either.
What kind of games is AQ Interactive making? More cultural titles like The Song Generation or visual novels like Anata Wo Yurusanai?

New from Divineo China
Use your wired Xbox or Xbox 360 controller on your Playstation 3 with full rumble support with XCM K.O. Gear. But there is more, with those controllers or even with Sony Dual Shock 3/Six Axis, you can program devastating combo attacks and assign it to any of the 5 memory buttons. Rapid fire/turbo is also included...
It is so good, it is just plain unfair!

Sony is about to be embroiled in another lawsuit concerning force feedback technology, according to a complaint filed in New Jersey.
As first reported by website Patent Arcade, the lawsuit concerns patent holder Craig Thorner, who alleges that Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) conspired with peripheral maker Performance Designed Products (PDP) to have him sign away patent rights for a fraction of their value.
Thorner held several patents relating to force feedback technology, which became central to Sony's defence in its infamous legal action against Immersion. He claims that after Sony's loss against Immersion he was contacted by PDP, who were also involved in legal action with Immersion.
PDP licensed Thorner's patents using the same attorneys representing Sony and Thorner now alleges that the two companies conspired to cheat him out of a more favourable deal. Thorner is suing PDP for legal malpractice and Sony for patent infringement.
Both Microsoft and Sony were sued by force feedback maker Immersion, in actions dating back to 2003. Sony fought and lost the lawsuit. As a result they ended up paying USD 90 million in damages and saw the PlayStation 3 launch without any force feedback technology in its SixAxis controllers.
Microsoft initially settled for USD 26 million, before receiving USD 20.75 million back in royalties Immersion obtained from Sony.

The Microsoft exclusive for Fallout 3's downloadable add-ons won't exist for much longer, as Bethesda has announced plans to bring all downloadable content for Fallout 3 to PlayStation 3. The fun isn't over for Fallout 3 PC and Xbox 360 owners just yet, however. Bethesda has also announced two new expansions, titled Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta, that will come to Microsoft platforms first.
Point Lookout takes players to a new swampy area with new quests. Mothership Zeta features a return of the aliens who are described by Bethesda as "pissed." The download allows players to experience an alien abduction. Both Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta will be priced at 800 Microsoft points (US $9.99). Point Lookout will be available in June for Xbox 360 and PC while Mothership Zeta is slated for July on the same platforms.
Operation: Anchorage will be released for PS3 in June with The Pitt and Broken Steel following with 4-6 weeks between each. Exact release dates will be announced in the future. Both Point Lookout and Mothership Zeta will eventually find their way over to PS3 as well, though they will come after the first three add-ons have made the leap.
All Fallout 3 downloads are on their way to PS3.But wait, there's more! Disc-based versions of the game add-ons are in the works. Fallout 3 Game Add-on Pack #1 will be released on May 26 for Xbox 360 and PC. It includes The Pitt and Operation: Anchorage. Add-on Pack #2, which includes Broken Steel and Point Lookout will be released in August for Xbox 360 and PC. PlayStation 3 will not get these disc-based versions of the add-ons. However, those on PS3 without access to the downloads will be able to buy the Fallout 3: Game of the Year edition that is coming out in October. It will include the full game plus all five add-ons and have a price of $59.99 on Xbox 360 and PS3 and $49.99 for PC.
And if that isn't enough for you to digest, read on for IGN's exclusive first interview with Todd Howard, Game Director for Fallout 3, that dives into more details on the newly announced add-ons as well as extra details on the port to PS3.
IGN: Is Point Lookout a reference to Point Lookout State Park in Maryland? Is that where the DLC takes place?
Todd Howard: Yes, yes it is.
IGN: Does the substantial history of Point Lookout State Park play a role in this expansion?
Todd Howard: In some ways, yes, such as the civil war stuff. Its modern incarnation is different, since we do treat it as we see it from the Fallout timeline, post 1950. More of a seaside vacation town with a boardwalk.
Like Operation: Anchorage (pictured here), you can expect a lot of new art for Mothership Zeta.IGN: Without spoiling too much for us, what is the general plotline of Point Lookout's new quests?
Todd Howard: Yeah, I really don't want to spoil it yet. It has a swampy-horror vibe. It's the brainchild of Joel Burgess and Nate Purkeypile, two of our best people here. Their pitch was, "picture backwoods Maryland, where the bombs didn't actually fall, but the world has left it behind." It's also big. Really big. It's a mini wasteland swamp to explore. It has a main quest, side quests, etc.
IGN: What about for Mothership Zeta?
Todd Howard: If you poke around Fallout 3, you can find a crashed UFO with an alien inside that is broadcasting a signal your Pip-Boy picks up. This is where you can get the alien blaster. Well, Mothership Zeta is answering the distress call. You get abducted and the whole thing takes place on a giant alien spacecraft. It's one of those classic 50's B movie type things, but with a harder edge.

Sony's portable system has attracted a healthy number of RPGs over the years, including the beautifully presented Crisis Core and the grind-filled (and less enjoyable) Valhalla Knights series. This gives RPG gamers plenty to do on long commutes and any other time a dose of dungeon-crawling is needed. This tradition will most certainly continue, as Natsume has announced a brand new strategy-RPG in the form of Adventures to Go.
President and CEO of Natsume, Hiro Maekawa, comments: "we are thrilled to be publishing Adventures to Go. Its whimsical storyline, strategic combat and endless replayability should earn it a top spot on any RPG player's list!"
The game will follow snarky hero Finn Courtland in his quest for fame and ridiculous amounts of wealth. On his way, he'll team up with a temperamental magician, an ex-lumberjack and a good-hearted cat burglar. Although the team might start off the quest with gold in mind, there's a solid chance that they'll have to stop the evil Arbitus and his demon army in the process.
Adventures to Go will feature a grid-based battle system with plenty of special abilities and skills to take advantage of. Players will also be able to spend their cash customizing the game's randomized dungeons, which gives players the power to tweak what monsters they'll face and more.
Adventures to Go will be shown for the first time at this year's E3.

LittleBigPlanet might just be the game that keeps on giving. Sure, you can create your own levels and share them with the world, but Media Molecule has kept costumes and levels coming on a pretty steady basis.
Today, there's more LBP goodness to discuss.
Friday, "The Patch" is going live. Described as a "hot spot destination," The Patch will showcase a number of levels created by the artists, musicians and athletes Sony and Media Molecule have run into while showing the game. The first installment of this free update is going to feature the work of skier Sarah Burke and artists Joe Vaux and Nathan Cabrera.
Meanwhile, Thursday, May 21, 2009, will bring a Monster Costume Pack and Monsters Kit. The costumes pack will set you back $2.99 (or 99 cents apiece) and include suits for Count Sackula, the Bride of Sackula, a werewolf and a zombie. The Monster Kit is going to cost $3.99 and give you a whole bunch of cool stuff. There will be "ready made pieces" (rotary saw, mannequin head, mannequin legs, mannequin torso), material (Orange fabric, fish scales, reptile skin, eggshell, Chesterfield), 26 monster-themed decorations such as tentacles and a rusty nail, 96 stickers, horror sounds and a new musical track titled "Party Ghouls' Music."
Looks like you still have a reason to keep on swinging through Sackboy's playground. If you want more details on the new LBP content, hit up the PlayStation Blog's post on the subject.
