UK launch sales for the PlayStation Vita have fallen below expectations, only managing around 45,000 units, according to a new report.
The figure was reported to PocketGamer by an industry source, suggesting sales were "just over half" those of the 3DS launch, which stood at 89,000 units.
Yesterday Sony released an official statement that it had sold 1.2 million units worldwide, a figure that takes into account both the Japanese and recent European and American sales. It also confirmed that software sales for the device were now over 2 million.
In November Sony told Eurogamer that it was confident it would beat the PSP's record of 185,000 units sold at UK launch.
"We're planning for a condition of success," SCEE president Jim Ryan said at the time.
"Launch quantities will sell out - I think that's looking pretty certain".

'Industry sources' claim Sony is moving away from cell tech, using AMD processor
Sony may be moving away from the cell technology used in the PlayStation 3 it claimed would revolutionize consoles.
"Industry sources" have told Kotaku that Sony is ditching the tech, which consisted of a "Power Processing Element" joined to eight "Synergistic Processing Elements", designed to work in conjunction with other cell devices sharing processing power.
Cell did not catch on, and some say it did nothing for the PS3 but make it inaccessible to developers.
Forbes recently ran an article claiming that Sony would use an AMD graphics processor for the PS4, rather than an Nvidia chip as used on the PS3.
As of now, Sony has not confirmed these reports.

Two American gamers who were the lucky winners of EA’s Mass Effect 3: Space Edition contest have found themselves in a spot of legal bother.
Kotaku reports that video makers Michael Davis and Miguel Droz stumbled across a downed Mass Effect 3 weather balloon in the Arizona desert. Upon realising exactly what they had found, they decided to raffle the highly sought after title.
They intended to charge $5 a ticket, with 30 per cent of the proceeds going to games charity Child’s Play and the rest going into a fund with which they hoped to open a video games company.
However, unbeknownst to the pair, Nevada state law deems that lotteries are only legal if all money raised goes to charity.
Davis and Droz subsequently decided to abandon the raffle altogether and refund all monies through PayPal.
Meanwhile, in the UK EA yesterday launched two weather balloons into space. One landed in Beacon Wood near Dartford with a second coming to rest near Tonbridge, west of Maidstone.

Around 600,000 PS Vita systems have been sold since Sony's new handheld launched in the west last week.
In a press release, Sony says that total worldwide sales were over 1.2 million by February 26. According to Media Create data, Vita's lifetime Japanese sales were 578,812 on February 19, suggesting around 600,000 have been sold in Latin and North America, Europe and Australia since last Wednesday. Worldwide software sales are now in excess of two million.
While direct comparisons are impossible, it appears Vita has slightly outperformed the western launch of 3DS. When Nintendo's handheld launched last year it sold 400,000 units in the US,113,000 in the UK, and 31,000 in Australia, a total of 544,000.
Andrew House, president and CEO of SCE, said: "PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn't be more thrilled with the reaction we're seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling.
"The market has responded and there is clear demand for a mobile device capable of providing a revolutionary combination of rich gaming and social connectivity within a real-world context.
"To sustain momentum, we're working closely with thirdparty developers and publishers to ensure the best games and franchises possible will be available on PS Vita, and our software lineup for the remainder of 2012 will have something for everyone across the globe."

Sony's latest handheld gaming device, the PS Vita, has sold over 1.2 million units following its international release on February 22nd, which came after an exclusive Japan only release in December 2011.

Andrew House, president of Sony Computer Entertainment, says: "PS Vita was designed to deliver the ultimate portable entertainment experience, and we couldn’t be more thrilled with the reaction we’re seeing from consumers and the pace at which PS Vita is selling."

As any citizen of Winterfell will tell you, there's nothing better to pass the time on a cold winter's night than to curl up with a good book. It should come as no surprise, then, that those who pre-order the upcoming Game of Thrones RPGwill also receive a hardbound art book. Entitled Game of Thrones: Visuals from the RPG, the book doles out "sixty-four full color pages of sketches, renders, photos, and screenshots from the game accompanied by compelling text and commentary from the game's developers."
The book will be available with orders from GameStop, EB Games, the HBO Shop or Amazon (US or Canada). Of course, if winter gets really bad, books have a dual purpose for emergencies: kindling.

Medal of Honor: Warfighter, which uses the experiences of Tier One Operatives for its missions and plot, will avoid the conclusion of terrorist Osama Bin Laden's life in its story."That's not our story to tell," producer Greg Goodrich told OXM US. "That's 'family business' to [the Tier 1 Operatives]. ... It's been an interesting exercise learning what's okay and what's not okay [to portray in the game]." And who at EA is going to argue with a guy who can kill with a paperclip? The Medal of Honor reboot also avoided possible offense two years ago by changing "Taliban" to "Opposing Force" for the multiplayer portion of the game."The objection was, kind of from an older generation that doesn't understand games, that the sound bite was 'Play as the Taliban and kill US soldiers,'" Danger Close marketing director Craig Owens told us at the time. "There still is, it seems, a group that's still a little bit leery of a game taking place around an active conflict."http://www.joystiq.com/2012/02/27/medal-of-honor-warfighter-avoiding-osama-bin-laden-mission/

Sony has placed a free episode of Canadian cartoon series South Park on the PlayStation store for Vita owners.
Currently the 12th, 13th and 14th seasons of the TV series can be downloaded to Sony’s machine, with the first episode of the 12thseries (found under the South Park Uncensored menu on the PS Store) can be downloaded for free.
The move will undoubtedly be designed to get Vita owners to visit the video store, which offers a large array of content to own or rent but has understandably played second fiddle to games in the marketing for the machine to date.
The PlayStation Vita had a big impact on the UK market this week, with Uncharted: Golden Abyss and FIFA Football claiming first and second spots respectively in this week’s UK charts.

Sony is working on an issue causing Playstation Plus members to receive error codes when attempting to access their gifted, downloadable Minis on the Vita.
Multiple users have reported the issue on the Playstation Europe forums, with nearly uniform descriptions from all reporting problems.
"We are aware of the issue, and will resolve it as quickly as possible," a Sony rep told Edge Online.
Minis that were purchased or received outside of the PS Plus deal are not experiencing any reported issues at this time.
The downloadable Minis line launched in 2009, and is available to play on the PS3, PSP, and Vita. Playstation Plus members are typically given a freebie each month.

GAME has stated it will start selling Ubisoft's range of Vita launch titles tomorrow, after failing to get them on the shelves in time for the handheld's debut last week.
"To confirm, the Vita Ubisoft titles will be available in all of GAME's channels from tomorrow," a spokesperson told VG247.
The news that they would not stock the titles, including Lumines and Rayman Origins, came on the eve of the launch of Sony's new handheld. At the time it gave no reason for the omission, but spoke to Eurogamer the next day to try and shed some light on the concerning situation.
"There's no one specific reason. There isn't one specific catch-all reason," said GAME Group marketing director Anna-Marie Mason.
"We do endeavour to give our customers the widest possible range, whether it's GAME, Gamestation, online or in-store. We can't stock absolutely everything. That's just not possible."
GAME is currently struggling the in the marketplace and with credit insurance, and could see as much as a £18 million loss in this financial year.

Almost eight out of ten people buying PS Vita at UK retail picked up the cheaper WiFi-only model.
The figure comes from UKIE's weekly software chart, which suggested Sony's new handheld had enjoyed a strong launch. While hardware sales figures won't be revealed until Sony chooses to make them public, we do know that 79 per cent chose the WiFi model over its 3G equivalent.
It mirrors Vita's fortunes in Japan, where Media Create data has today revealed that the 3G version outsold the WiFi model in the system's first three weeks on sale.
Vita exclusive Uncharted: Golden Abyss was this morning named the new UK all-formats number one, accounting for 31 per cent of all Vita software sales.

UK retailer Game Group has confirmed that it will be stocking Ubisoft-published PS Vita launch titles from tomorrow.
In a brief statement passed to VG247, the nation's largest specialist retailer confirms the games will be "available in all Game's channels" - the Game and Gamestation chains and their websites, but presumably not gameplay.co.uk, which is to be closedtomorrow.
Last week the increasingly embattled retailer admitted it would not be selling Ubisoft's Vita launch titles - Lumines: Electronic Symphony, Rayman Origins, Michael Jackson: The Experience HD, Asphalt Injection and Dungeon Hunter Alliance - when the system launched on Wednesday.
So far this month Game Group has also found itself unable to stock 3DS fighter Tekken 3D Prime Edition, and Wii RPG The Last Story, both of which are published in the UK by Nintendo.
While the retailer has yet to confirm it, it is believed its stock problems stem from the loss earlier this month of its credit insurance, requiring it to pay for new stock up front or hammer out individual deals with publishers.
