Flower developer thatgamecompany will not create a PlayStation Vita version of long-awaited PlayStation 3 adventure Journey. That's unless Sony, which own the rights to the game's IP, makes it itself, a tweet on thatgamecompany's official Twitter reveals. The same applies to previous cult-hit Flower, too."The only way we'll go back to an old game is if we can think of something new and exciting to do with it," another tweet reads.Journey will finally launch in March, according to Game Informer via (IndieGameMag).Journey allows players to explore a desolate desert landscape and will last between three and five hours, but features "great replayability". Minecraft has launched on PC, Mac, Android and iOS, and it will launch on Xbox Live Arcade - but it will not launch on PS Vita.Mojang has "no plans" to bring the indie sensation Minecraft to PS Vita, Mojang business bod Daniel Kaplan confirmed in a webchat interview attended by Eurogamer this evening. The news comes despite the success of Minecraft: Pocket Edition on the Sony Xperia Play - the first PlayStation Certified mobile phone.Pocket Edition launched exclusively on Xperia Play last summer and quickly became the Android Market's most downloaded app globally. Kaplan revealed 8500 people have played the game on the device.A new update launched on Saturday that added Survival Mode to the game for the first time. It's designed to make Pocket Edition more of an action-oriented experience, with health bars, weapons and animals included. While Minecraft will not appear on Vita, out in Europe on 22nd February, Mojang has a raft of platforms in mind for its next game.Fantasy-based interactive collectible card game Scrolls, which has been at the centre of a high-profile trademark battle between Notch and Elder Scrolls maker Bethesda, is "definitely coming for touch screens", Kaplan said. For running and jumping game Cobalt, Mojang's first third-party published title, Kaplan is less sure. "Don't know about that," he said, "the controls don't fit the touch screen."

For the Vita launch (psst, it's next week), the Europeans are receiving anextravagant big-budget looking ad, while North America gets something that could have been produced with handycams and a copy of iMovie. But, hey now,at least it shows off the Vita for more than 20 frames and promotes some functionality!
Also, as stated earlier today, the North American Vita ad would have to feature the #gamechanger Twitter hashtag -- it's a cornerstone of modern American marketing!
"You will find the television commercials featured during primetime programming on some of your favorite networks including Fox, Comedy Central and ESPN," Senior VP of PlayStation Brand Marketing Guy Longworth wrote on the PS Blog. "Residents of New York, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia and San Francisco will notice PS Vita on buildings and billboards. You'll find it on your favorite websites and on your favorite radio stations. Wherever you are, PS Vita aims to be."
Sony plans to spend $50 million on Vita marketing, "the largest platform launch in terms of marketing investment" it's ever had. #gamechanger

President of worldwide studios for Sony Computer Entertainment Shuhei Yoshida recognizes that the Vita hasn't sold very well in Japan, but he thinks it will do better in the US. Why? Because Sony's previous handheld venture, the PSP, is still "very popular" in Japan. Or something like that.
"So, the Japanese launch, you saw the sell-through numbers, you notice that we haven't been able to sell out the units that we sold in," Yoshida toldVentureBeat, responding to a prompt about lessons learned for the US launch from Japanese Vita sales. "But looking very objectively at the market situation there in Japan, especially on the portable, PSP is still very popular."
Yoshida said Sony needs to communicate the Vita as a brand, not just another portable device, to potential players. Part of that is visible in Sony's marketing campaign, which includes $50 million of commercials, billboards, online banner ads, retail deals and hashtags.
"We are still seeing good sales through PSP, and we are advertising on TV, a dedicated PSP TV campaign, at the same time we are introducing Vita," Yoshida said, continuing to discuss the merits of the PSP as a children's entertainment system. He did mention one plan directly for the Vita: "At the same time, we are trying to communicate the value and new, exciting features of PS Vita to an older, mature, core gamer audience."

February 15th, 2012, 00:39 Posted By: wraggster
The first prices for Vita games downloadable from the PlayStation Network have been confirmed by Sony.
VG247 reports that launch title MotorStorm RC will cost just £4.79 – the cheapest of the first party titles. Furthermore, the game will be playable on both PS3 and Vita.
Super Stardust, Top Darts and Hustle Kings will all retail for £6.49. Escape Plan, meanwhile, will cost £9.99.
Sony has also confirmed an upper price bracket of £39.99 which, presumably, is designed to accommodate the likes of Uncharted: Golden Abyss.
Different pricing structures will apply for third party titles.

There's no wrong price point, says Sony studio boss
President of SCE Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida is confident that consumers will happily pay full price for Vita games.
Titles for the new handheld vary in price - both digitally and at retail. Games are available from£4.79 for downloadable titles like MotorStorm RC, to £19.99 for mid-range games such as Ridge Racer, to £44.99 for Uncharted: Golden Abyss and other triple-A titles.
But Yoshida claims that, despite the rise of 69p apps for iPhone, iPad and other portable devices, gamers will still pay full price for Vita games if they are of high enough quality.
"We have a theory that if we create really compelling, engaging experiences that you can spend hours with, you’ll see the value of spending 40 dolars against one dollar," he told VentureBeat.
"Gamers love all kinds of games. I totally understand people who like games like Angry Birds, but if you’re a gamer, you’re also interested in trying different kinds of experiences, bigger games.

Nowadays, most multiplayer experiences are fairly uniform: two groups try to shoot each other in the face, and maybe steal a flag or plant a bomb in the process. These concepts have become the norm, and while most of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City's varying multiplayer modes feel like they're trying to offer something that caters to the typical multiplayer crowd, I found myself constantly surprised and excited by an element completely out of my control: the NPCs.
In each of Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City's game modes, players have to deal with a cadre of AI-controlled enemies as well as a team of opposing players. Generally, standard zombies aren't a threat to the leather-fetish Umbrella troops or their camo-loving Spec Ops counterpart; however, a stable of familiar Resident Evil enemies increase the lethality of each match. The agile and sharp-clawed Hunters gleefully rip everything apart; Lickers stalk their prey, striking ferociously from the darkness; and powerful Tyrants can emerge at any time, and I suggest you run when you see them.
Entering these enemies into the equation and priorities rapidly change on the fly, offering an experience unlike most team-based competitive multiplayer modes out there. "Should I keep shooting the enemy in front of me or should we jointly focus on the lumbering Tyrant who just dropped down into the middle of our firefight?" It's was the constant quick survey of options that led to a number of memorable moments during my time with the upcoming shooter from developer Slant Six.

February 14th, 2012, 14:12 Posted By: wraggster
Last month, word came out that the Japanese version of Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational for the PlayStation Vita included an online pass. With the embargo on North American Vita coverage lifted, we can now confirm that the American version does indeed feature an online pass. Of the Vita games we've acquired so far, Wipeout 2048 is the only other title to feature an online pass.
Those are currently the only titles with passes available on the US PlayStation Store, so it would seem that the rest of the launch lineup is free of the online pass's ten-dollar grip -- for now.

Naughty Dog is looking to make The Last of Us the most realistic fungal-zombie-apocalypse game ever created. Game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann let slip a few details about combat mechanics in a video interview with Game Informer: Health will not automatically regenerate; Ellie, your AI companion, will be intelligent enough to throw bricks and other materials at your enemies, and she won't break your "stealth" mode; and it may include Uncharted-esque playable cinematics, but in more intimate environments.
Straley and Druckmann discuss combat moments as part strategy, part shooter, and say they're infusing the title with realistic reactions from NPCs and the protagonist alike. Watch the entire interview here.

Look familiar? It should: that's the PlayStation Vita, Sony's up-and-coming challenger to the mobile gaming throne. It's made the rounds a few times before, from E3, to Tokyo Game Show, to San Francisco's Vita Hill Social Club, and it even took an early pass through Engadget's review gauntlet -- courtesy of the Land of the Rising Sun, of course. After a strong start in its homeland (followed by a quick holiday slump), the budding portable hit the books, brushed up on its English and barreled its way back into Engadget's game room, demanding another review. And why not? We're happy to oblige.
And here it is, an extremely familiar looking slab of plastic, glass and electronics that calls itself the North American 3G / WiFi PlayStation Vita. Sony's new region-freetradition ensures that it won't be toodifferent than Japan's native model, but we're diving in for a more detailed look anyway. Read on for a peek at its content management system, backward compatibility, the particulars of its fancy new thumbsticks, the latest firmware update's contribution to the platform and much more.

[Michael Chen] felt the sound his PSP was putting out needed more dimension. Some would have grabbed themselves a nice set of headphones, but he grabbed his soldering iron instead and found some space where he could add a bigger speaker.
Mobile devices tend to cram as much into the small form factor as possible so we’re surprised he managed make room. But apparently if you cut away a bit from the inside of the case there is space beneath the memory card. [Michael] cautions that you need to choose a speaker rated for 8 ohms or greater in order to use it as a drop-in replacement for one of the two original speakers. But he also touches on a method to use both stock speakers as well as the new one. He suggests grabbing an LM386 op-amp and a capacitor and hooking them up. Yep, there’s room for that too if you mount it dead-bug-style. We wonder how the battery life will be affected by this hack?

Sony's marketing spend for its new handheld Vita will be its biggest for a platform launch yet, and its aiming those $50 million at male gamers who already own a PS3.
The campaign is "the largest platform launch in terms of marketing investment we've ever had," John Koller, director of hardware marketing at SCEA, told The New York Times.
It's aiming to catch the attention of male gamers in their twenties, who play around eight hours of games a week and already own Sony's current home console.
The exhaustive media campaign will include social networking, billboards, television commercials, online advertising, retail deals and pop up location so people can get hands on with the machine.
The Vita will be released in the UK and US on February 22.

Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida admits that he thought Demon's Souls - a game Sony had the opportunity to publish - was "crap … unbelievably bad."
Speaking to Game Informer, Yoshida said that when he first sawDemon's Souls it was a mess, with framerate problems and no network features, and that as such Sony opted against picking up the publishing rights.
"Game development in Japan typically is made horizontally, where all assets are made in parallel, so it's difficult to figure out what the final state of the game is going to be," he said. "The western-style game development is typically a vertical slice. So in the very early process, the team tried to create a small piece of the experience that resembles the final product.
"What happened with Demon's Souls was until very late in the game's development, we were not able to play the game through. There were framerate issues and the network was not up and running. We underestimated the quality of the game and to be honest, the media in Japan did the same.
"For my personal experience with Demon's Souls, when it was close to final I spent close to two hours playing it, and after two hours I was still standing at the beginning of the game.
"I said, 'This is crap. This is an unbelievably bad game.' So I put it aside."
The final product, of course, was much better, and Atlus, in North America, and Namco in Europe picked up the publishing rights to the game, which far outstripped initial sales expectations. Sony admitted in 2010 that its failure to publish the game was "a mistake."

Sony's new CEO says the company needs to move on from its hardware roots. From its inception, the company has defined itself through its gadget lines — Walkman, Vaio, Cyber-shot, PlayStation — but incoming CEO Kazuo Hirai, who will officially lead the company from April, says Sony must now focus more on the software and platforms they access. He said he wants to model the company after its successful PlayStation gaming business, which he helped turn around, where 'hardware drives software, and software drives hardware, and it's all tied in by the network.' Sony is forecasting nearly US$3 billion in losses for the fiscal year through March
