Jpcsp SVN r2444 is released. JPCSP is the most advanced PlayStation Portable(PSP) emulator, allowing you to play your PSP games on a PC. Even though Jpcsp is written in Java, it can already reach 100% PSP speed on a lot of commercial games... and the emulator performance is constantly increasing. Jpcsp takes full advantage of dual-core processors, matching the PSP dual-core architecture. Even a quad-core can give a small performance improvement by leaving free CPU cores for the Java JIT Compiler and the graphics cache.
Jpcsp SVN changelog:
r2444
Improvement of the software renderer: apply the perspective correction while mapping a texture to a 3D triangle (take the depth into account while mapping). Now the texture is correctly mapped on the 3D cube demo.

PCSX2 SVN r5072 is released. PCSX2 is an open source PlayStation 2 (PS2) emulator for the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. With the most recent versions, many PS2 games are playable (although speed limitations have made play-to-completion tests for many games impractical), and several games are claimed to have full functionality.
PCSX2 SVN Changelog:
r5072
GSdx: added a shortcut in GSState::Transfer for the most frequent vertex format I found (helps quite a lot), less thread-syncing for the sw renderer, and the bios boot logo was fixed (just had to clear the memory on reset).

SCE president and CEO Andrew House says healthy sales of Nintendo's 3DS proves that, despite the doom and gloom naysayers, there's still sufficient demand for dedicated gaming portables.
"The sales of the 3DS, having the advantage of releasing a little bit ahead of us, have been exceedingly good. I think that shows that there is, in general, a lot of demand for a gaming-primary portable device," House told the PlayStation Blog.
The mirrors the sentiments of SCEE president and CEO Jim Ryan, who recently said Sony is "encouraged" by 3DS' success over the holidays.
House hopes that people who discover gaming on other devices may 'graduate', in a sense, to more sophisticated games on Vita.
"But our device in contrast has just so much more to offer," added House. "What I think we've done is point to a market that really has started out with potentially casual games on other devices, but now wants a deeper, better or more premier gaming experience," he said.
The new head of PlayStation granted CVG a full and frank interview at the PS Vita's Japanese launch, which you can read through that link.

Indian studio Version 2 Games will bring a new PSN title to PS3 on February 9:Smash 'n' Survive, a game based on the life of comedian Gallagher. Oh, no, sorry, it's actually a car combat game.
Players choose one of 30 "brutal concept cars, including muscle, agile, monster, buggy and SUV vehicles," and race across a selection of ten maps, attempting to destroy one another with flamethrowers, "magneto pulsars," and other exotic implements. Game modes like group derby, "plant the bomb," and team modes will help vary the gameplay, though we assume it'll still be about smashing other cars.
Smash 'n' Survive will include single-player and two-player split screen modes at launch; online play for six players will be smashed into it in a free update this April.

Last time Atlus teased a new game whose name started with "G," some fans assumed it would be a game in the Growlanser series. It was Gungnir that particular time, but now Atlus has revealed a second G game, and it's totallyGrowlanser.
Growlanser: Wayfarer of Time, coming to PSP this summer, is a localized version of Growlanser IV: Over Reloaded, the tactical RPG sequel released on PS2 in 2003 and then remade on PSP last year. The PSP update has improved loading times, a message-skip option, and lots of new in-game content.
Because of a combination of licensing restrictions and the scope of the game's script, only the "many anime cutscenes" will be voiced. We're sure the people sitting next to you on the subway won't mind.

January 19th, 2012, 00:22 Posted By: wraggster
The president and CEO of SCE Andrew House has labelled last year’s high-profile hack on the PlayStation Network as “ironic”.
The statement comes as much of the internet – including most famously Wikipedia – have ceased operations for a day in protest at the proposed US legislation SOPA that is designed to combat piracy and illegal content sharing online.
“The irony, for me, is that we became the target because we thought, I think quite fairly, that we were trying to protect our intellectual property rights from piracy,” House told CVG.
“But it was ironically that which led a certain sector of opinion to think that, somehow, we were acting against their best interests. That will be an ongoing challenge, and I think it's one we'll have to take extremely seriously.”
House went on to insist that Sony is now a far safer digital entity than it ever was before.
“Not to sound like an excuse, but we're now in very solid company with many other institutions and companies that are suffering under the same sort of threat,” he insisted. “But it galvanised us, right up to the very top of the company.
“We've hired an extremely experienced chief information security officer at the corporate level, not just on the PlayStation level. We've revamped our systems to the best of our ability, to try to ensure that this kind of thing, as far as possible, can be prevented. But there were some very ugly threats going on, and we became the target.”

via http://psp.dashhacks.com/2012/01/17/...ing-production
The PSP scene has been a bit of a ghost town lately. Little to say in the ways of big news, the new-ish PSP E1000 was somewhat of a flunk, and CFW development seems to have come to a grinding halt. This may be due to the up and coming worldwide release of the PS Vita, and it seems like the Vita may be causing some other repurcussions in game retailers.
Working in retail, it seems that competing retailers are slowly decreasing their stock count for the PSP 3000 and GO. The store in which I work in is clearing out their PSP stock indefinitely, as well as all the UMD's up in the shelves collecting dust behind the PS3 games. Other stores more focused specifically on gaming seem to be focusing on promoting the sale of second hand consoles, so as to clear them out a bit quicker and possibly even get a debit back for any unsold new PSP's.
Much like the Guitar Hero article I posted a short while back, I suggest that if you are interested in any UMD's or getting a PSP new or old, now is the time to do it. Who knows how long PSP's will still be on the shelves for.

Mamosuke confirmed to me today that Teck4′s exploit for the PSP Emulator in the vita is still working on 1.52. Note that it doesn’t guarantee 100% that some of the techniques used to get HBL to work on top of this exploit haven’t been patched, as I haven’t tested myself. But for now I’m confident. I might update to test that, at some point

A brand new, purpose-built version of Mortal Kombat will be released on Sony’s PlayStation Vita in the spring, Warner Bros has announced.
The emphasis in this version – which will return to the series’ 2D roots – has been put on brutality, with fatalities and x-ray moves getting a special mention.
New gameplay modes include Tag Team and Challenge Tower.
“The NetherRealm team is committed to making sure that we follow up the success of 2011’s Mortal Kombat with an equally compelling experience on the PlayStation Vita,” NetherRealm‘s creative director Ed Boon stated.
“The original game content and new features we developed for the PlayStation Vita will provide gamers with the best fighting game experience available on the new mobile platform.”

I managed to port HBL to the US version of Teck4′s exploit in exactly 45 minutes (including writing the savedata exploit and the binary loader), which is a new personal record, thanks to the scripts included in HBL’s repository, and also to the fact that the different versions of the game are internally fairly similar (which is to be expected because technically the game is supposed to be the same, just translated, but I seem to recall it wasn’t that easy for the Hotshots golf exploit)I also updated the EU/US versions of this HBL port to get the tweaks I worked on for the past weeks in order to get a fair amount of homebrews to work.
The next step for me is to write a bit of documentation on how to use all this, and then patiently wait. As far as a release is concerned… well check the FAQ I wrote yesterday.
I could spend time polishing this port of HBL for the Vita, improve compatibility, and I might do it, but since there’s a high risk this gets used by only a small amount of people before it gets patched, I’ll probably leave it in its current state for now. It’s probably not worth working too much on the details if nobody ends up using it. Of course if by some sort of miracle this doesn’t get patched immediately by Sony, I’ll update it accordingly.
Now let’s all wait (I’m probably more excited than anybody else about this release, really…)

Virtuous Flame released an update to his Open CMA tool a few days ago. Open CMA allows you to connect your playstation Vita to your PC through the Content Manager without needing to be connected to the internet. This is useful if you need to transfer some files while away from your network, or simply if like me you don’t see why it should be required to be connected to the internet when you transfer files between two pieces of hardware you own. This update (revision 3) patches the PC side of the content manager further, preventing it from auto updating. Without this patch, Sony’s driver is silently updating itself whenever it’s connected to the internet even if you were using open CMA so far, which makes this r3 an important update.

In the past days I stabilized HBL for Teck4′s exploit and got some major homebrews to work. In the video below I’m showing a few homebrews running on the PS Vita. I also included Picodrive again to show that fixing the sound issue is relatively easy as it is just a setting in the emulator. Check the video below.
You can see in this video snes9xTYL (super nes emulator), Bookr (pdf reader), CSPSP, T.O.M.E. (text mode rpg), EmuMaster (game boy emulator), Zombie Crisis (FPS), Wagic (which loads about 10 times faster than on a real PSP, this talks for the improved access speed of this new memory stick format), cavestory (platform/adventure), Picodrive (sega genesis emulator), Spider solitaire, ScummVM (point-and-click adventure), Daedalus (N64 emulator, this is not DaedalusX64), FCEU-PSP (Nes emulator). Those are more or less the homebrews I recommended to HBL users back when HBL was big.
Missing from this video is (unfortunately) gpsp which I couldn’t get to run on the Vita, while it ran fine on the PSP. What I could see is that the emulator is more sensitive than the PSP when a thread that’s currently not running crashes. I think (not sure) that gpsp somehow crashes HBL. On the psp it usually means that once you quit gpsp, HBL crashes. On the vita it seems to crash as soon as gpsp does “something wrong” to hbl, which is roughly as soon as it loads.
I got major homebrews to work, and now I’ll focus on reporting this to the EU and US version, which both need to be brought up to speed with these latest changes.
From what I could see, syscall estimation basically doesn’t work (which is what JJS discovered a while ago when porting HBL to 6.60), which will limit the amount of homebrews that can be played with this exploit, but as you can see on the video, I got a few good ones to run already
A message to haters who say I’m reusing other people’s work from the PSP scene and not contributing anything new: ask yourself who made it so easy to port HBL to new game exploits in the first place.

It’s been 6 months since the last release of Wagic, and I’m sure some of you might have thought the project was on a halt. The truth is, we’ve been working on several major things on Wagic that postponed this release. This release is a major milestone for us, as this is the first official release were we support iPhone/iPad and Android.
What is Wagic?
Often compared to commercial games for its replay value and quality, Wagic is a heroic fantasy card game, in which you fight as a wizard against the computer. As you win battles, you unlock new game modes and earn credits that allow you to improve your army. Wagic is community driven and entirely customizable: you can create themes, mods, new rules, or even new games (check for example Knights VS Dagons on our forums, a game strongly inspired by strategy games such as warcraft). Wagic is available in several languages (English, French, German, spanish, Italian, Portuguese, Chinese, Japanese, Serbian), and open source. It currently runs on the Sony PSP, Windows, Linux, maemo, meego, Android, and iOS (iPhone, iPad).
Changelog
This version of Wagic comes with more than 500 new unique cards, including some from the long awaited set Innistrad, but the main reason this release took time is that we today bring a version of Wagic available for iPhone, iPad, Android and Meego (Nokia N9) on top of the already supported platforms (Windows, Linux, Maemo, and the PSP). This required major improvements to our game, and this is the main reason this release took so long. Other platforms are however getting there share of bug fixes and improvements, see details below.
Detailed changelog:
•iOS (iPhone/iPad) version now available! (see details below)
•Android version now available! (see details below)
•Meego (Nokia N9) version now available!
•More than 500 new unique cards. Wagic now supports 15400 cards (8700 unique), including cards from Innistrad.
•New abilities for card coders. We will update the card Wiki asap with details
•A new progress bar in the main menu shows you how far you are from completing the game (unlocking all sets, mods, opponents, etc…)
•You can now easily create unlockable mods. If you’re interested, check the rules folder, in particular the file awards.dat
•A new file system supporting zip files. For users, this change will mostly be transparent, but it should make installing the game easier, as well as installing/uninstalling mods. This should also make it easier for most people to install images. See this thread in the forum for details, especially if you want to create campaigns or mods for the game.
•Many bug fixes
Special notes about the iOS and Android versions
Wagic has been around on the PSP for years. It gave us lots of time to improve it. Hopefully, these 4 years of development will be visible when you try Wagic on your touch device. Nevertheless, this is a whole new interface to handle for us, and we know it is far from perfect. But we are doing this release because many people have been waiting for it. Wagic on iOS or Android is not perfect, but we hope you’ll enjoy it anyway. We hope that this release will motivate some additional devs to come and join the fun of working on this project. We are a bunch of hobbyists creating Wagic on our free time, come and join us! The source can be downloaded here. If you have the skills to compile the game and fix a bug or improve something, send me a patch and we’ll give you write access to the SVN!
The iOS version requires a jailbroken device. The android version requires you to install the apk by yourself, using for example Astro. We are aware that solutions such as cydia or the android market exist, but we are waiting for an improved version of Wagic before we go mainstream.

I just got contacted by Virtuous Flame who informed me that PS Vita update 1.52 is available (which is confirmed on the official site), and as for version 1.51 back in December, this update is compulsory if you want to use some services such as the PSN (which makes sense) or the possibility to copy files to your Vita with the Content Manager (which doesn’t).
Virtuous Flame was therefore able to confirm that his patches to the CMA (openCMA) allow him to keep using the CMA without having to upgrade. He noted that your console’s wifi must also be turned off, otherwise the console will ask you t update as well. If your console asks you to update to 1.52 and you don’t want to, turn its wifi off (plane mode), then reboot the console. also install openCMA on your PC. This won’t give you access to the PSN, but at least you can use the CMA.
I haven’t verified that myself yet. I also don’t know if 1.52 patches Teck4′s exploit and/or my work on HBL.

Upcoming Dead Island DLC will let you experience the island paradise from the perspective of one of the bad guys. No, not a zombie -- the next DLC, coming January 31, focuses on human antagonist Ryder White. We're sure zombies will still be around.
You'll learn why he became such an unpleasant character in "several hours" of new story mode content, and you'll also find two new blueprints for new weapon mods. The North American release hits on January 31 for 800 MSP/
$9.99. The European release is set for February 1 for £7.99.

After the 2011 holiday spending frenzy, many folks may find themselves in a period of early 2012 belt-tightening. If you'd like to make those gaming dollars stretch a bit further, you might want to check out the PSN 12 for '12 sale, as in "12 games for 2012" (hence the apostrophe). The list includes plenty of favorites like PixelJunk SideScroller, Dungeon Defenders, Bloodrayne: Betrayal,Rochard, Street Fighter III: Third Strike Online Edition and many more.
From January 17 through 23, each game will be available for 30 percent off its usual price. Meanwhile, PlayStation Plus subscribers can nab any game on the list for a full 50 percent off.
