Sony's backing the Vita's US launch with a $50 million marketing campaign. The company is, as you would expect, bullish on the system's future here, with CEO Jack Tretton estimating a big impact in terms of launch window sales.
Speaking with Reuters, Tretton said he would "be very pleased" if the PlayStation Vita moved half a million units in the United States in the next three weeks. Even though the Vita moved 321,000 units in its first two days on sale, it took over a month for the Vita to hit 500,000 in Japan. The cheaper PSP is stillpopular in that region and moves thousands of units each week. North America, however, is a much larger market.
Instead, launch sales of the PSP in the US may be more indicative of what the PS Vita will do. The PSP launched here on March 24, 2005, for $249 and sold 500,000 in its first two days.

Dozens of customers at food chain Taco Bell received codes saying they’d won PS Vitas but failed to receive their prizes.
Taco Bell told CBS 13 that someone ‘tampered’ with their competition, which means winning messages were incorrectly sent to entrants who hadn’t actually won. They later received emails informing them they wouldn’t be receiving a PS Vita.
The restaurant chain says it will send apology emails to affected customers.
“We have learned that during a short period of time on January 30th, some people entering our ‘Unlock the Box’ promotion erroneously received a message suggesting they had won a PlayStation Vita, pending verification,” read a Taco Bell statement.
“It was confirmed these entrants viewed these messages as a result of others who attempted to gain illegal entry and defraud the system. Unfortunately, during this time period some saw a confirmation screen but were not valid winners. We are therefore giving those consumers who viewed erroneous messages a second chance to win by automatically entering them into a separate draw to win a PS Vita.”
Consumer attorney Eric Ratinoff argued that the company has a responsibility to deliver the prizes.
“If Taco Bell had a problem with the way they ran their own sweepstakes, that should be their own problem,” he said.
The contest will continue through to March 11th.

Sony's new PlayStation Vita handheld could sell as many as 12.4 million units in 2012 - provided it gets a price cut.
That's according to research firm Strategy Analytics, which assumes with an average selling price of $180, hardware sales could generate as much as $2.2 billion for Sony.
"The real value of the PlayStation Vita is its drive for content revenue growth and its strategic position in Sony's entertainment ecosystem," said Jia Wu, senior analysts at the company. "The PlayStation Store will have a vital role in selling games, videos and other content through its online access.
In the time of austerity, consumers are considerably sensitive to prices, and Nintendo proved that a price cut can save a product.
Jia Wu, Strategy Analytics
"We believe that PlayStation Vita will cause Sony's 2012 portable console software revenue to grow by $800 million compared with 2011. Although it's too small a device to turn the company around in terms of financial contribution, we expect it to bring in $2 billion incremental revenue from both hardware and software sales in 2012."
The company expects a price cut this year, in a move similar to Nintendo reducing the price of the 3DS once the initial hardcore gaming crowd had made its purchase in the first month of sale. There's a similar trend in Japan for the Vita, which released in the region before Christmas.
"In the time of austerity, consumers are considerably sensitive to prices, and Nintendo proved that a price cut can save a product," offered Wu.
"Sony now is experiencing the same story in Japan. Sales of the Wi-Fi version of PlayStation Vita at $249 initially exploded, selling more than 300,000 units in the first week of release. But the new console is barely moving 20,000 units per week in its home market after all the hard-core fans made their purchases, mirroring the experience of the Nintendo 3DS."
"Despite the solid design and strong processing power, it is challenging to convince consumers to buy a dedicated game console above the $200 price range in today's economic environment as Nintendo has learnt. Sales of 3G models will be a particular challenge as it demands a $50 premium and additional data plan charges and in the long run is likely to represent only a small portion of total PlayStation Vita sales."
He added that Sony can strengthen the PlayStation brand with the new handheld, "even if the console hardware itself will not generate much profit."
And with the continued growth of smartphones and tablets, Strategy Analytics said Sony's challenge is to create unique content only available on the PlayStation Vita.
"To survive the march of smartphone's entering the casual gaming space, Sony needs to achieve the Holy Grail of inventing innovative new gameplay whilst at the same time investing heavily in exclusive content," said Wu.

No data for 3G adoption
The first edition bundles of the PlayStation Vita, available pre-launch, have sold out.
“It went great” Sony's senior vice president of PlayStation brand marketing Guy Longworth toldGameSpot.
“We sold out our pre-launch bundles, so we're excited about that. We got a great response to it.”
The PS Vita launched today in Europe, Australia, the Middle East, North Africa, and North and South America.
Boasting 3G, Wi-Fi, and cross-platform compatibility, the Vita is Sony's answer to competion from the Nintendo 3DS and mobile devices such as Android and iOS tablets.

'Former employees' claim unannounced console in the works
Sony is working on a new console that will use AMD graphics technology, according to a report.
News agency Forbes is reporting that “former AMD employees” have confirmed a new platform is in the works, most likely the PlayStation 4.
The sources also claimed that the tech outfit would play a key part in the new system.
AMD graphics tech is currently used in the Xbox 360, whilst Sony had previously used Nvidia to power the PS3. The move if true would mark a distinct change in strategy for the company.
Sony CTO George Bailey and AMD declined to comment on the story.

A PlayStation Vita will be arriving on my doorstep some time on Thursday. It will be arriving courtesy of Amazon rather than Sony, in case you're wondering, so I did in fact spend money on the thing. I do not, however, plan to purchase any games for it. At least not yet.
As I perused the list of PSP games available for download, I realized that I already had quite a few titles to choose from. So rather than try to justify spending money on Lumines or Uncharted -- both fine games but not my cup of tea -- I decided I would revisit some of my favorite PSP RPGs on the Vita's big, beautiful screen.
It's really a pity the PSP never experienced the renaissance over here that it did in Japan, since it means quality RPGs like Valkyria Chronicles 3 may never be localized. It's only thanks to XSEED that Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky ever saw the light of day in the US, as well as Vanillaware's coming North American launch for Grand Knights History. A select few have made it stateside, and I'm happy to see them available on PSN. Here are the ones that will be making their way to my Vita, and to yours as well, I hope.

Tiny trucks will take their places on PS3 and Vita on March 6, when MotorStorm RC arrives on the North American PSN, letting you experience the best of the series in little toy trucks. You'll be able to download the same game on both platforms, and buying one gives you access to the other.
If you're playing on PS3, you'll get "SimulView" same-screen support (for TVs fancy enough to support it), 3D, and split-screen four-player. If you're playing on Vita, you're playing on a Vita! Wow!

Sony's Vice President and Managing Director from the UK and Ireland, Fergal Gara, talked with Eurogamer at the PS Vita launch last night in London, and said there's a lot more in store for the new handheld console. The current pricing and memory concerns are the results of "early days."
On price, for example, Gara says that the system is priced as low as Sony could get it on launch day, "not a lot above an iPod and a hell of a long way below a good tablet." Given the hardware included, Gara says Sony "priced it as attractively as we could afford to, frankly," with an eye toward creating a lasting product over the next few years.
Gara also admitted memory is a concern, with hefty downloadable games filling memory cards up quickly. Having learned from the Japanese Vita release, he says, Sony is already securing memory, chips and deals to release bigger cards in the UK, and presumably in North America as well.

With the retail launch of the Vita hardware comes the arrival of three augmented reality games, using a set of six cards that look an awful lot like the ESP test cards Dr. Venkman used in Ghostbusters. I downloaded them all from the PlayStation Store today, carefully set up a camera between my face and Vita (keeping the table in view) and demonstrated all three.
Of the three, Fireworks is the definite standout. And by "standout" I mean "one I could foresee playing a second time."

By now, we're sure you have that shiny new PlayStation Vita all unboxed and have logged several hours on the thing playing games, Tweeting and watching vids on Netflix. But, if those apps we told you about earlier weren't enough to fulfill your entertainment needs, you'll be happy to know there could be more in stock for you. SCEA Senior VP Guy Longworth may have spilled the beans when he told The Hollywood Reporter "we have a partnership with Netflix and Hulu; this is a new way for them to distribute content." An interesting statement given the fact there's no Hulu app available now that Vita has launched. Good news is, the previously unknown hook-up indicates we may be be able to catch some episodes of Gossip Girl at some point in the future on our monstrous quad-core handheld.

Just finished your deliciously digital Blu-ray collection of the Star Wars saga? Thought that was the end of it? C'mon. Following the three-dimensional release of Episode 1 in theaters, Pocket-lint's heard from sources at a recent Panasonic event that the "start" of the saga will be arriving on 3D Blu-ray faster than you might think -- this spring, likely as a replacement for its Avatar pack-in exclusive. Panasonic's got a history of Star Wars tie-ins, so we're putting whatever money we have left for additional Jedi media on it making an appearance over the next few months.

February 23rd, 2012, 04:02 Posted By: wraggster
Speaking a few days before this morning’s official launch of the PlayStation Vita, Sony’s American boss Jack Tretton has said that early Sony sales data is “very, very positive”.
“Memory is going out the door very aggressively despite the fact that memory is in a lot of the presale bundles,” he told IGN. “The software appears to be selling quite well top to bottom.
“I’ve been involved in every platform launch we’ve ever had back to 1995, so I have the history to fall back on, and in terms of the press that we’ve gotten for Vita, in terms of the way we’ve been able to deliver the message and in terms of merchandising at retail and getting the hardware and software in people’s hands, I think this is probably our most successful lead up to a launch platform.
“Now that the holidays are behind us and the marketing campaign is kicking in and the merchandising is appearing at retail and we’ve got our promotional campaign kicking in, I feel great about the velocity that we have going into Vita, and I’d say that we’re best positioned of any platform launch that I’ve been a part of in terms of positive momentum and positive feedback relative to it.”
Tretton also slammed those who have dubbed the machine’s arrival in Japan as a failure.
“Quite frankly, it scares me if people think that the Japanese launch is struggling. The fact is they sold 500,000 units in three weeks,” he added.
“I would be pleased if we did 500,000 units in the first three weeks here in the United States. I think that’s a real healthy number for a new platform launch.”

PS3 owners who purchase Mass Effect 3 early via PSN will receive an extra theme not available elsewhere.
Consumers will be able to pre-order a downloadable copy of the game through PSN online, claims the US PlayStation Blog.
Those who do will receive an in-game M55 Argus rifle and Mass Effect 3 PS3 theme, the latter of which is exclusive to the platform.
Pre-order bonuses for Mass Effect 3 at retail include N7 Warfare Gear, which is exclusive to GAME, and includes a Valkyrie rifle, defender armour, increased ammo capacity and ‘amplified’ weapon damage. The standard pre-order extra, available with most retailers, is the aforementioned M55 Argus rifle.
Gamers who pre-order Mass Effect 3 through EA’s digital download platform Origin will receive an AT-12 Raider Shotgun.
Mass Effect 3 hits UK shelves on March 9th for Xbox 360, PS3 and PC.

February 23rd, 2012, 03:58 Posted By: wraggster
The UK MD of Sony has admitted that Sony should have made higher capacity Vita memory cards available in Europe at launch.
On the High Street right now the 16GB SKUs are already becoming hard to track down, leaving gamers to choose between the 4GB and 8GB versions.
Some overseas retailers are offering the 32GB SKU, though costs are upwards of £70 per unit. It’s not yet known when the 32GB card will be released in Europe.
“We've already learnt from the early days in Japan that we probably haven't got big enough memory cards introduced for the UK market,” Fergal Gara told Eurogamer. “We've already gone to secure bigger size cards to bring them into the UK market.
“Before it comes to market you just have to guess what people are going to want. We thought they'd want a lot of 4GB cards just as the minimum, and then they buy packaged media. But actually, the way it's going is, many of the early adopters are clearly going to download a bit more, or just want to buy the big chip in case.
“It's going to evolve. But we can certainly see they want bigger cards.”
Vita games are not particularly small in size, either. The biggest release so far seems to be FIFA Football, which weighs in at over 2.8GB. Even smaller games like Super Stardust are in excess of 600MB in size, meaning memory cards are filling up very quickly.
UPDATE: As pointed out by an MCV reader, Uncharted: Golden Abyss is around 3.4GB in size to download.

Ubisoft has also laid claim to the second highest rated game – puzzle title Lumines: Electronic Symphony (85 per cent).
This is followed by PQube BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extended (83 per cent), Sony’s Super Stardust Delta (83 per cent) and Uncharted: Golden Abyss (80 per cent).

Sony's new handheld, PS Vita, has launched in North America and Europe.
First in line at Game's flagship store on London's Oxford Street was Zohaib Ali, 21, who had been waiting outside the store since Sunday.
"No sleep," he told VG247. "Tonight I'm just going to play Vita all night. I've stayed awake all night. I've already played it - it's really good! I love games, I love technology - I just want my Vita."

A lack of demand caused by the low price for digital downloads of PSP games meant Sony saw little point in bringing Japan's UMD Passport programme to the west, Sony has admitted.
Speaking to Wired, Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida said that there would have been little merit in launching the scheme, which allows Japanese Vita owners to buy digital download licences for their UMD PSP games for a nominal fee, in other territories.
"I'm sorry we're not doing it in the States," Yoshida said. "The system has been introduced in Japan, where there is much larger demand for PSP games. When you look at the release schedule of new titles there are still lots of PSP games being released in Japan and being announced for release.
"So there is a lot more demand… to introduce a programme like that. The other point is, when you look at PSP titles sold digitally in the States or Europe, games are sold for a really reasonable price. You can buy Final Fantasy Tactics for $10. That's a great price.
"PSP games in Japan are sold at a much higher price, so people see the value in spending the $5 to $10 to get a digital copy. But when the games are already sold at a lower price in the US, we see less value in introducing that kind of system."
Vita launches in North America and Europe today, and tomorrow in Australia. 21-year-old Zohaib Ali was the first UK gamer to get his hands on the system at the midnight opening of Game's flagship store in London's Oxford Street.
