Call of Duty will be launching on Vita this fall, Sony's SVP of PlayStation Brand Marketing told Game Trailers in a video interview. SVP Guy Longworth, hired by Sony in October 2011, casually dropped the news about Vita's Call of Duty title, saying his kids love first-person shooters and "in the autumn, they're really looking forward to Call of Duty on Vita, and we think that's going to be an absolute game-changer for the platform."
When pressed for more details, Longworth said Sony wasn't ready to announce which title will be hitting Vita, but we bet it'll be the one with the guns during that war against those bad guys with strange accents.

The PlayStation business is under renewed pressure to perform for Sony Corporation in a year when the company is expecting to make a ¥220 billion ($2.9 billion) loss.
PlayStation's Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida admitted there's a renewed emphasis on the division to perform, but the group is also motivated by the leadership of new Sony CEO Kaz Hirai and his years of experience in the games market.
"I'll be remiss if I say they won't be because we're part of the big Sony corporation. But when you listen carefully to the announcements by Kaz Hirai, he clearly said that Sony going forward has a two pillar business. We have a really strong vertical integration, one is the digital imaging, with digital and video cameras and the other is games," Yoshida told GamesIndustry.biz.
The appointment of Kaz himself is a clear message. The way he has developed software, hardware and services together, I'm sure that's how he's going to develop the business.
Shuhei Yoshida, Sony
Yoshida said he is expecting continued investment in the PlayStation business - one of Sony's most successful brands and due in the spotlight this month with the imminent launch of the PS Vita handheld.
"Coming from Kaz, saying these two businesses are the pillars of the company, it's a huge expectation for us to kind of lead the business and so I would expect Sony would allow us to invest for the future.
"It's clear messaging, the appointment of Kaz himself is a clear message. The way he has developed software, hardware and services together, I'm sure that's how he's going to develop the business."
Kaz Hirai replaces Howard Stringer officially on April 1, and has already announced plans to grow the core games, smartphone and digital imaging businesses, as well as try to turn around Sony's struggling television business.
For Yoshida and other PlayStation executives, there's a sense of relief that senior Sony corporate staff now accept the games business, when even the rejection of ideas at boardroom level will be cushioned by Hirai's fundamental understanding of the games market.
"Because my office is in Sony headquarters I have more exposure to the other Sony divisions, it's fun to find new allies in different departments, but there are lots of layers of Sony executives on the electronics side that do not necessarily understand what we were doing in the games business," offered Yoshida.
"It was a scary thought when I had to present some investment and business plans to executives and I worried they might ask questions that might not be relevant, I was concerned that these people might be making decisions over our business.
"So it's a big relief and a very energising thing that we see Kaz promoted." He continued: "He's a very business orientated person but he also understands what is most important for our business and what our strategy is. Even when he says 'no' he understands our business, which is better than hearing 'no' from other executives who do not understand the video games business."
The PlayStation Vita launches in Europe and the US next week.

February 18th, 2012, 23:49 Posted By: wraggster
The flagship GAME and GameStation stores will hold midnight events for PlayStation Vita.
GAME Oxford Street is the official UK midnight launch, and will feature meet and greets with WipEout 2048 developers Karl Jones and Ami Ledger (who will be on hand to sign copies of the games).
Fans will also receive invitations to the after-party at the PlayStation Vita rooms at 80 Oxford Street, where gamers can enjoy DJ sets, refreshments and more.
The PS Vita Mobile Team will also be doing sampling with the crowd, while goody bags including a GAME PSN voucher will be handed out.
The person at the front of the queue will receive one year's supply of Vita games for free.
"As the official launch partner, we’ve been leading the way by giving gamers the chance to sample the console across 600 GAME and Gamestation stores and the excitement built around the PlayStation Vita launch shows that handheld gaming is as popular as ever," said GAME marketing boss Anna-Marie Mason.
"With both our flagship stores opening at midnight to celebrate the launch of PlayStation Vita, we’re getting set for a fantastic night of gaming and we’re looking forward to giving customers the earliest chance possible to buy their own PlayStation Vita.’’

UPDATE: Sony's James Gallagher has tweeted to say new Vita pre-order discount emails will be sent out tomorrow afternoon."For those having problems with your PS Vita pre-order email, you will receive a new email tomorrow afternoon," he said. "Sorry for any inconvenience."ORIGINAL STORY: Sony is working to fix a website issue that is preventing those who have pre-ordered PS Vita from redeeming a code that grants a £5 discount on a download title at launch.Eurogamer was contacted by a reader earlier today about the issue, which seems to be affecting a number of gamers who have pre-ordered the inbound handheld. Those who pre-ordered Vita were required to register at a special website. This website did work - dishing out a code to unlock PS Home content and other goodies offered in exchange for a promise to buy the console. The idea was that the £5 discount code would be sent out at a later date. Games included in the offer are Little Deviants, Super Stardust Delta, Hustle Kings and Escape Plan. This week the emails were sent, but unfortunately the link provided in them directs users to a site that requires you enter the voucher code a second time. And this website is reporting error codes when users try to do just that.Sony Computer Entertainment Europe's James Gallagher said this afternoon that Sony's engineers have identified the problem, and promised that new emails will be sent with another link that will take you to the discount selection page.

In the expensive, devious world of advertising, a successful word of mouth campaign is worth its weight in gold. Building something into your product that's fun to show off and talk about makes the purchase feel justified to the buyer, and instills a sense of "Dude, I want this" in the buyer's friends. You've got to give them something to talk about, though, which is why Sony is making the Vita's Cross Play functionality easier to jump into via free DLC for two of its titles.
Well, free with purchase, we should say. Anyone who buys Hustle Kings for the Vita will be able to download the PS3 version of the game for free, and vice versa. Wipeout 2048 pilots that already own Wipeout HD and its "HD Fury" pack will receive the Vita DLC versions of both at no charge when they're released this spring. Sony describes this as "promotional" pricing, so we doubt free cross-platform transference will always be the norm. For now though, it's a good step towards establishing Cross Play as more than a gimmick in the minds of Vita owners and their friends.

iFixit's (counter-intuitively) done it again. This time it's made gamers of the world weep by ceremoniously un-fixing a PS Vita, Sony's latest portable gaming powerhouse. Standard screws and fittings -- alongside a modular design -- made for a relatively pain-free deconstruction for these tinkerers -- especially compared to recent iFixit visitors. Highlights from the tech autopsy include a 2,200mAh battery, Toshiba SDRAM and an OLED display that is unfortunately fused to the plastic, reducing the score down to a could-be-worth-a-fixin' 8 out of 10. Get your goggles, grab a surgery mask and meet us at the source below. Things could get a little messy.

February 16th, 2012, 23:48 Posted By: wraggster
Three of Australia's leading retailers will not stock the PlayStation Vita at launch, Kotaku reports.
Target, Big W and K-Mart are all backing away from Sony's handheld, though Target and Big W confirmed via e-mail that they would consider stocking the product "at a later date."
However, K-Mart stated that it has no plans to sell the Vita at all, dictated by a broader to strategy to move away from expensive items and towards cheaper products.
As a result, the Vita will be chiefly available through specialist stores, and there is concern that consumers looking for a more competitive price from department stores will be frustrated.
However, Sony is resolute that it fits with an underlying strategy to aim the Vita at a core audience.
"For the launch of PlayStation Vita in Australia, with the specific target market being the active gamer, we have chosen to launch the console with a focused retail channel strategy across national specialist game and specialist technology retailers," Sony said in a statement.
"There is a long term vision for our revolutionary new hand-held platform, in the same way we had a long term vision for PS3, and anticipate that in line with this we will broaden channel distribution in the future."
With a week to go until launch, Sony has also dropped the retail price of the 3G Vita by $30 [Australian] to $419.95. The Wi-fi Vita will remain at $349.95.

February 16th, 2012, 23:42 Posted By: wraggster
The size of save files was not the cause of framerate issues affecting PS3 players of The Elder Scrolls V: Skryim, Bethesda claims.
Speaking to Kotaku, chief game designer Todd Howard said that the problem, which reduced PS3 framerates to single figures in places and was finally patched last week, was in fact far more complicated in nature.
"The way our dynamic stuff and scripting works, it's obvious it gets in situations where it taxes the PS3," he said. "And we felt we had a lot of it under control. But for certain users it literally depends on how they play the game, varied over a hundred hours and literally what spells they use.
"No it's not [connected to save files]. That's the common misconception. It's literally the things you've done in what order and what's running. Some of the things are literally what spells do you have hot-keyed? Because, as you switch them, they handle memory differently."
Howard claims that the problem was largely fixed with the 1.2 update, released in November, though there are plenty of PS3 players who would dispute that. Bethesda asked those still having problems to send them their save files for analysis. Patch 1.4, released last week, appears to have finally taken care of the problem for the vast majority of players.
"Now that we've been through this, we're not naive enough to say we've seen everything, because we have to assume we haven't," Howard said. "There are still going to be some people who have to come back to us and say: 'Okay, my situation is this.' Send us your save game. We literally need to look at what you have running.
"We [had] one guy who had seven dragons on the other side of the world, and a siege about to happen in this city and another 20 quests running. And, okay, this is what it's trying to do and it's having a hard time running that."
All of which is fine, but Bethesda did little to correct that "misconception," asking affected players to send in their save files for analysis and with each patch addressing the issue causing save files to reduce in size.
Howard also insisted: "We did a ton more testing this time around, so the game is definitely our most solid release regardless of platform." It's all relative, admittedly, but how many Skyrim players go through the game without a sprawling list of open quests dotted all over the map? It's the way the game is meant to be played so should it not, therefore, have been tested in the same way?

There are many third party developers and publishers feverishly working on titles' says Sony VP Scott Rohde
Sony has launched a staunch defence of its PS Vita handheld amidst rumours that developers are cancelling projects for the platform in favour of Nintendo’s 3DS.
Speaking to Gamasutra, Sony VP of worldwide studios Scott Rohde said that reports from Japanese website Nikkei of a developer exodus were “extreme” and untrue.
He said that many developers and publishers were supportive of the handheld and were creating games for it.
"I did not see that quote, but you see extremist quotes like that all the time," said Rohde.
"I mean, obviously, there is no way anyone could stand in front of a camera and say that all developers are changing focus from one platform to another, no matter what it is."

No need to pay for the same content twice' says Sony.
A number of games available for purchase on the playstation store will be playable on both PlayStation 3 and PS Vita for one price.
Those who have already purchased any of these games will be able to play them on both systems as of February 22.
Sony says the move is to highlight the cross-platform capabilities of the PS Vita, which enables purchasers of the handheld system to play with PS3 owners over a network.
The PlayStation Vita launch has drawn a deal of criticism for Sony, who have seen a series of brutal quarters and had their credit rating devalued.

Tool is designed to make PlayStation Move development more accessible.
Sony has announced that Move.me, a development tool that allows use of the PlayStation Move as an input device for PC, is now available in Europe and the UK.
Previously available only in the US, Move.me is targeted for use by academics, researchers, and hobbyists, and is designed to make development for the PlayStation Move more accessible.
Sony highlights the capabilities of the device for use in research and experimentation in non-traditional game and non-game concepts.
"Move.me is already being used by various universities in North America in cutting edge physical therapy and creative design projects," said Maria Stukoff, Head of Academic Development and Partnerships at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "We’re eagerly anticipating what else is possible now we’ve extended its availability.”
A BETA trial is already underway among academics and researchers across Europe.

Sony has confirmed it will shut down PSP's comic book download service at the end of September.
The service, announced in 2009 and cancelled in the west last July, will no longer be updated from March 15, though the comic reader app will be available until the end of the year.
Those who have purchased content in the past will be able to redownload it until the end of the year as well, with Sony advising those that want to back up their purchases to use Media Go.
The company says it is currently looking into offering comics, and other digital books content, "through other Sony and PlayStation brand product," according to Andriasang, which we assume means PSP's successor, PS Vita.

Smartphones and tablets could have access to classic Sony games.
Sony's certification will provide HTC with permission to introduce the PlayStation back-catalogue of games to all of its device users, according to Pocket-lint.
It's a questionable move, considering that Sony split from Ericsson to spread its wings in the smartphone market by delivering a more integrated hardware and software experience.
Sharing its gaming platform with a rival will mean relinquishing a would-be USP for Sony.
The report cites sources that claim an official announcement will take place at MWC, however HTC said it would not "comment on rumours or speculation."
Sony (then Sony Ericsson) launched the The Xperia Play last spring as its first PlayStation phone. The device featured PlayStation-branded buttons, a flip-screen and links to the PlayStation Suite platform, which allows gamers to download PSone and Android software.

Rockstar has said we can expect to hear more about Grand Theft Auto 5 in a few months time.
Answering the numerous 'Where oh where is Grand Theft Auto 5?' questions in its openAsked and Answered thread, a nameless Rockstar representative said the developer is toiling away diligently and hopes to reveal more soon."Right now, we are very hard at work on the game and are excited as well to show and tell you more as development progresses - expect that we'll be talking much more about GTAV starting at some point in a few months' time."
Last week Take-Two told investors in a financials call that development of Grand Theft Auto V is"making great progress", however it didn't provide a window of release.
