Fancy a go on a PlayStation Vita? According to reports, demo units have begun appearing in Best Buy store in US.
Destructoid says that a store in Connecticut has a pair of Vita units strapped to the bodies of employees, who are allowing curious gamers to get their sweaty mitts all over their glossy touch screens. The machines are apparently equipped with 4GB memory cards and copies of Little Deviants. No Uncharted, soz.
These demo units, however, don't appear to be widespread - this Vegas-based writer checked in with local Best Buy stores and got nothing but confused mumbles and oblivious dismissals. There are no Vitas in Vegas, it seems.
But there might be one at your local store - give them a call (and begin by explaining to them what a Vita actually is, FFS) before you Sonic-sprint out the front door.
UK gamers eager to sample PS Vita before its release will be able to try out the new handheldat any one of GAME and Gamestation's 600 specialist retail stores nationwide.

By this point, the shiny veneer of newness has worn off of Sony's rapidly approaching Vita and we're all pretty used to how the thing looks. Not everyone has seen it in person yet, granted, but we've all seen it, and its PSP-ish profile and itty-bitty analogue sticks have settled into that comfortable zone of mental familiarity.
The device could have been remarkably different, however. For instance, Sony designer Takashi Sogabe (responsible for the Walkman, among other things) had originally intended for the Vita to be a much more svelte device: "The original design of the PS Vita, for example, was very much thinner than the current retail product," Sogabe said during an interview with The Guardian. "From a designer's point of view, thinner is better-looking, but the engineers wanted to put all the features in. Maybe it will become thinner in the future, but the engineers would have to come up with a means to do that."
There was also a time when the Vita's shape had more in common with the DS than the PSP: "We came up with various patterns, including a clamshell one. Then we discussed it with a lot of publishers and settled on this shape." In the long run, Sony decided that it would be a better idea to transfer the PSP's brand equity to the Vita by having the devices look similar.
One major difference between the PSP and Vita, however, is the latter's massive screen, which at 5 inches makes it the biggest screen on any dedicated portable gaming device this side of an iPad. That figure had started at 5.5 inches, according to Sogabe, but was scaled back seeing as this is a portable device and everything. We like Sony's ambition with hardware design, but we'd still rather have the real Vita over a giant, wafer-thin abalone.

Sony's PlayStation Vita hasn't exactly sold like hotcakes over in Japan, so the company has sweetened the pot for the portable's potential Stateside buyers. Those who placed pre-orders will get a couple of extra goodies for their $350. To go with the previously promised limited edition case, 4GB memory card and copy of Little Deviants, you'll also receive 250MB of data from AT&T and a PlayStation Network game gratis as soon as you activate 3G on the device. Furthermore, folks buying a Vita on launch day can look forward to the same free data and PSN game, plus an 8GB memory card in exchange for their $300. So, that enough to get you on the handheld's bandwagon? Sound off in the comments below.

The average RRP of a boxed PlayStation Vita game in the UK on launch day will be £33, MCV can reveal.
The news comes as Vita gets its second £44.99 RRP title in the shape of FIFA Football. It joins Sony’s own Uncharted: Golden Abyss in the full-price tier.
Vita arrives next month in the midst of uncertainty concerning the handheld market.
Advocates like Nintendo argue that it remains healthy and viable. Others, however, believe that the popularity of the App Store and the increasing consumer expectations for cheap games mean traditional console gaming is no longer seen as affordable.

Everybody's Golf (£34.99)
Modnation Racers: Road Trip (£34.99)

Lumines (£34.99)
Dungeon Hunter Alliance (£34.99)
Michael Jackson: The Experience (£24.99)
Rayman Origins (£34.99)
PQube
BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend (£39.99 standard, £44.99 Collector’s)
Tecmo Koei
Dynasty Warriors Next (TBC)
Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus (TBC)
Sega
Virtua Tennis 4 – World Tour Edition (TBC)
EA
FIFA Football (£44.99)
Namco Bandai
Ridge Racer (£19.99)
Shinobido 2: Revenge of Zen (£34.99)
Touch My Katamari (£29.99)
Capcom
Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3 (TBC)
Codemasters
Formula One 2011 (£39.99)

During this week's PlayStation Blogcast, on which our own Ludwig Kietzmann is a "special guest," PlayStation Sr. Social Media Specialist Sid Shuman (yay, alliteration!) confirmed the planned multiplayer demo for Twisted Metal would hit PSN next week, on January 31.
If you like your manslaughter a bit less vehicular, you may want to check out a demo for another February-bound title, EA's rebooted Syndicate. It will also be a multiplayer demo, focusing on the game's co-op side, but you already knew that. Who needs expensive implants and cool tech for remembering things? Not you, buddy!

Resident Evil 6 is Capcom’s largest-scale production the publisher’s ever worked on, with 600 staff working on the title.
The ‘dramatic horror’ title – revealed last week – will also promise a ‘larger world’ than previous Resident Evil games.
Exec producer Hiroyuki Kobayashi said: “This is by far the largest-scale production Capcom has ever embarked on. Between the 150 staff members in Japan and everyone around the world we have more than 600 people involved. A lot of work has gone into this game.
“Resident Evil 6 is by far and away the most ambitious title in the series.”
Resident Evil 6 producer Yoshiaki Hirabayashi added: “This game not only has a larger world and a deeper experience than you have ever played before, but we’re excited to say it’s a blend of action and survival horror – something we like to call dramatic horror.”
Resident Evil 6 will be released on Xbox 360 and PS3 on November 20th, with a PC version to follow.

Ratchet & Clank developer Insomniac has said that it’s work on the PS3’s Resistance series is over.
“We won’t be making any more Resistances,” Insomniac CEO Ted Price told VG247.
That’s not to say, of course, that the series won’t live on. But if it does, Insomniac won’t be involved. The third game in the series was released late last year and is critically regarded as the best instalment to date.
As well as co-op focused shooter Overdrive, Insomniac will also be devoting time to its new social games division Insomniac Click.
“Certainly over the next couple years, we’re going to see a huge evolution in visuals in social games,” Price added.
“It’s thanks to improving technologies. It’s thanks to browsers that are getting better and more powerful. It’s thanks to development teams – core traditional game teams who are moving into the space.”

Gearbox's long-in-development Aliens: Colonial Marines has again been delayed, with publisher Sega confirming the firstperson shooter will miss its most recently targeted spring launch window.
The PS3, Xbox 360 and PC game’s official website now carries an autumn 2012 launch window. Asked for comment on the title’s status, Sega confirmed the delay without specifying release plans.
“Aliens: Colonial Marines is a process of creativity and invention and those don't necessarily follow the structure of an assembly line,” the publisher told us. “While setting clear goals, deadlines and predictions is helpful, they are often subjective.
“We don't want to sacrifice the creative process just for the sake of following a blue print. We prefer to have the creative discovery shape that blue print because our goal is to make a great game, and we are prioritizing this goal over the previously targeted date.”
Aliens: Colonial Marines was originally scheduled for release in late 2008.

January 25th, 2012, 02:45 Posted By: wraggster
PS Vita (and Sony Walkman) designer Takashi Sogabe has told CVG that he'd like to make future PS Vita iterations thinner than the launch model.
Speaking in a round-table interview at Sony Computer Entertainment's Japanese HQ last month, Sogabe, who runs the Corporate Design Centre, also said he'd wanted to use metal rather than plastic materials when developing the system."Speaking not only about the PS Vita, we always have a battle between engineers and designers. The original design of the PS Vita, for example, was very much thinner than the current retail product," he said. "From a designer's point of view, thinner is better-looking, but the engineers wanted to put all the features in.
"Maybe it will become thinner in the future, but the engineers would have to come up with a means to do that. The main effort for me was to make this product happen. The buttons and analogue sticks were perhaps not in the best position from a design point of view, but we felt they were the best solution from a publisher's point of view.
"As a designer, I wanted to use metal rather than plastic," he added, "but because there are a lot of antennae in the body, we couldn't use metal."
You can read the full interview with Sogabe here, in which he also discusses the challenges involved in designing Vita's dual analogue sticks.

While Mr. Blurrycam already spotted the upcoming PlayStation 3 video editor at CES, he was unable to divulge any details on release dates. We were similarly unable to wring out much more when we hit the show floor ourselves. Now, Sony has finally outed a few key tidbits, including the fact that Europe can expect it to arrive by the end of Q1 and that you'll have to fork out for the pleasure -- priced at around €10 ($13). According to Electricpig, the PlayMemories Studio will offer up cropping and zooming tools, slow-mo, and a medley of sound and visual effects. Incoming versions of the movie editor for iOS and Android, however, will still arrive gratis. Are you willing to stump up to get your Spielberg on? While there's nothing concrete on a US launch date just yet, we'd expect to see the editor to make a similar appearance over the next few months.

Those gosh-darned hackers just refuse to get off Sony's lawn, serving up yet another exploit for the outfit's latest baby, the PlayStation Vita. Well, sort of -- the Vita's own code hasn't been breached, but it sure plays nice with PlayStation 3 custom firmware 3.55. The PS3 tweak apparently recognizes the Vita as a mobile phone, which somehow allows it to Remote Play a wider assortment of PS3 games than normal. It's not all unicorns and double rainbows, however, as input lag appears to be an issue -- but it should help tide over enterprising Vita owners until Sony officially expands its list of Remote Play-compatible titles. In the meantime, those on the straight and narrow can console themselves with the Vita's recently updated 3G data plan. Hit the break to see the trick cram Battlefield 3 onto the small screen.

Sony Computer Entertainment UK has opened a new Vita showcase in Glasgow, allowing consumers to try up the upcoming handheld.
The Glasgow event is part of the Vita Rooms tour, which creates temporary venues where gamers can learn more about PlayStation Vita and its games, as well as getting hands-on time.
The Glasgow Vita Rooms will be open from January 23rd to January 29th, before the tour moves to London. The capital city venue will open on February 16th and remain open until Vita's UK launch day, February 22nd.
The first Vita Rooms saw Sony take over Manchester, where attendees were entertained by DJ Tim Westwood. Celebrity guests included England rugby star Mark Cueto, Manchester City's Mario Balotelli, boxer Amir Kahn and Coronation Street's Jack Thomas.
"PlayStation Vita is an amazing piece of technology - but the very best way to make people realise this is by putting it in their hands," said SCE UK's vice president and managing director Fergal Gara.
"What I have taken away from the past week in Manchester is the level of anticipation and buzz that is building as the PS Vita launch approaches. We now look forward to Vita's reception north of the border."

The Sony studio behind forthcoming Vita racer ModNation Racers: Road Trip has explained its perplexing decision not to include head-to-head online multiplayer in the game.Writing in a post on the PlayStation Blog, Sony San Diego game director Erich Waas said that the developer's aim was to focus on innovating online play rather than falling on back on tradition."I know there are some of you that are disappointed that ModNation Racers: Road Trip doesn't let you play head-to-head online other than ad-hoc," wrote Waas."But we really wanted to evolve online functionality and take advantage of the PlayStation Vita's unique feature set in new ways. If all we ever did as developers is rehash features that have been done in previous games, we'd still be entering passwords instead of using save files and you'd have to start the entire game over after you lost your three lives (extra 1-ups aside)."While online head-to-head has been a mode used in many games in recent years, we focused on making a game that is crafted for how portable games are most often played - in quicker 'pick up and play' sessions multiple times in a day. Your online interaction, competition and socialisation will always be when it's convenient for you."Elsewhere in his post, Waas detailed in full exactly what sort of online features you can expect from the game when it launches this Spring - namely localised leaderboards, downloadable ghost data, track sharing and various geolocation extras.

The ESRB has rated crime epics Grand Theft Auto 3 and Vice City for the PlayStation 3. Considering the blockbuster third entry in the series is available on iOS and Android, word of it coming to the PS3 isn't the craziest news we've heard about the classic title in recent memory.
The third entry in the GTA3 series, Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, still doesn't have a PS3 listing from the ESRB, so we aren't sure if it's just cruisin' in later for a drive-by or part of what's likely Rockstar adding the two other games to PSN for digital distribution. Of course, if you own a first-gen PS3, your system is backwards-compatible and should have no issue playing the original PlayStation 2 discs (chances are you already own them).

Have you been waiting for more two-fisted Move action? Lamenting that second Move controller you bought for yourself, after The Fight: Lights Out lost its appeal? Developer Lamagama will put those wands to use with its upcoming game Quadratum Mortis, a fantasy-style combat game that uses two Moves to control a sword and shield -- or, if the above concept art is any indication, two swords.
According to the blurb on Lamagama's site, you'll be able to "fight with your friends over PlayStation Network," and use a traditional controller if you don't have a pile of Moves around.
Lamagama is also at work on Egg 'n' Roll, a 3D action game planned for release on "mobile platforms such as iOS and PS Vita," due in Q4.

Soul Calibur has always been the everyman fighter. Of all the major fighting game series on the market, Soul Calibur is the game that you would probably feel most comfortable playing with your non-gaming friends or significant other. And a lot of that has to do with the weapons.
The Soul series wasn't the first fighting game to feature weapons, of course. In the early days of the genre, Samurai Shodown distinguished itself with its detailed sprites, gore, and katanas. Battle Arena Toshinden, meanwhile, distinguished itself as the first 3D weapons fighter, close to a year before the original Soul Edge hit the arcades.
Soul Edge, for its part, was Namco's way of testing uncharted waters. It was positioned as an alternative to Tekken and Virtua Fighter, which dominated 3D fighting at that time, and its weapons were a big part of its appeal. Apart from feeling smoother than the stiff Tekken, the strategic concept of weapon range was more intuitive than the combo-heavy 3D fighters that had preceded it.
The reason it's so easy to understand is that the concept is built into the visual vocabulary of the game. When you look at Siegfried, you see a large knight with a gigantic blade. It's instantly apparent that he has longer reach than, say, the lightweight ninja Taki. And a good player knows how to put that advantage to good use, or to minimize it in its turn.
Today, Soul Edge is largely forgotten outside of a small cadre of dedicated fans, but it did its part to lay down the foundation for the series by introducing the story as well as familiar characters like Mitsurugi. Soulcalibur V director Daishi Odashima certainly seems to have some affection for the original game. He even argued in favor of naming the upcoming sequel "Soul Edge 2," but was overruled.
