Sony Corporation has reported a loss of ¥105.9 billion (£877.7 million) for the three months ending December 31.
Sales revenue for the period fell by 17.7 per cent year on year, to ¥1,822.9 billion (£15.1 billion). This time last year the company posted a profit of ¥131.5 billion (£1.1 billion).
The Consumer Products And Services division, which includes Sony's PlayStation business, also posted a loss, of ¥85.7 billion (£710 million). Sales fell by almost a quarter year on year, to ¥996.5 billion (£8.3 billion).
Sony blamed the declines on the flooding disaster that struck Thailand last July. As well as causing over 815 deaths, the floods hit Thai manafacturing hard, causing a worldwide shortage of certain components. Both AMD and Nvidia blamed falling sales revenue on a shortage of hard drives in the supply chain.
The company also acknowledged the impact of the PS3 price cut, poor market conditions in Europe, and the continued appreciation of the yen.

Sony has announced on its European forums that maintenance time has been scheduled for the PlayStation Network this Thursday, February 2, from 2PM GMT until 8AM Friday morning. If the maintenance carries over to the US (and it usually does), it'll start at 6AM PST Thursday until midnight PST, or 9AM to 3AM for those of you on the East Coast.
Fortunately, the outage doesn't seem to include gameplay -- Sony says that it will only affect the PS Store, Customer Account Management and Registration services. PlayStation Home, however, will be offline the entire time. So ... that doesn't sound so bad! Just pour yourself a cup of tea, grab something good to read and wrap yourself in a warm blanket, and the outage will be over before you know it.

Sony has confirmed that pricing for Vita download codes will be around 10 per cent less than physical media versions of the same games, at least in the US and Japan.
A US shopper noticed prices on a Best Buy pre-order machine in the US were slightly lower than he had been expecting, posting a shot of the prices to NeoGaf.
When questioned on the matter, Sony representatives issued a statement to Shacknews confirming that download titles will indeed be cheaper than boxed products, although official pricing remains unconfirmed.
"I can confirm that there will be a discount on the downloadable PS Vita titles from PSN," said the Sony spokesperson.
"Exact details have not yet been revealed, but be on the lookout for an announcement in the very near future."
It is not yet known whether Europe will be subject to a similar pricing model, but Sony has been contacted for confirmation on the issue.

The change will take effect as of April 1st 2012. Current chairman, CEO and president Sir Howard Stringer will assume the role of chairman of the board of directors in June.
“As challenging as times are for Sony now, were it not for the strong leadership of Sir Howard Stringer these past seven years, we would have been in a much more difficult position,” Hirai stated.
“I am grateful to Sir Howard and to the Board for their confidence in me, and I look forward to working with everyone at Sony more closely than ever before to build a strong future for our customers, shareholders, partners and employees."

PCSX2 SVN r5085 is compiled. PCSX2 is an open source PlayStation 2 (PS2) emulator for the Microsoft Windows and Linux operating systems. With the most recent versions, many PS2 games are playable (although speed limitations have made play-to-completion tests for many games impractical), and several games are claimed to have full functionality.
PCSX2 SVN Changelog:
r5085
GSdx: fixing two different bugs of the sw renderer, addressing outside the texture in region wrap mode (skygunner), and little gaps in shadows and other random places (dq8, rogue galaxy, okami).

news via http://wololo.net/wagic/2012/01/28/n...play-for-vita/
When the PlayStation Vita came out, everyone was excited about the remote play option. Who wouldn’t like being able to play Mortal Kombat on the Vita anywhere in the house? But, Sony blew it on this feature. The Vita has remote play, but it can only be used on some less than exciting games, like Bejeweled. However, a recent series of Youtube videos and some other players online have found a way to hack the Vita, opening it up to many other PS3 games. No one is sure if the hack is real[Note by wololo: between the time this article was written and the time it was published, the hack was proven to be real, and tutorials can easily be found to test it by yourself], but this can mean a lot for the hacker community if it’s real.
Normally when you connect the PlayStation Vita to the PS3 for remote play, it reads as a game system. No surprise, considering it is one. When the alleged jailbreak hack is used, the Vita no longer reads as a game system. Instead, the PS3 recognizes it as a mobile phone.
This is able to lift many of the restrictions the Vita has, allowing players to connect with high-profile games. At the same time, the Vita does not seem to lose any of its inherent power after the hack. In a number of YouTube videos, you can see someone playing Mortal Kombat, Battlefield 3, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Red Dead Redemption and Alice: Madness Returns. If this can truly be done, then this hack has the potential to split the Vita wide open, allowing it to play all those games you really wanted to when you heard about remote play.
This is how remote play should have been in the first place, which is causing the homebrew and hacker community to scramble. Many are now trying to find out if this hack is real, and how to duplicate it. If there is one reason why Sony doesn’t want the Vita to have such open remote play options, it is because of the gaming lags. The Vita is a strong machine, no one will dispute that, but it isn’t a PS3.
In many of these videos, you are going to notice a lot of input and gaming lags. While they look far from unplayable, it does look a little difficult to play during those intense moments when you are pulling off a 30-hit combo or shooting down 20 guys at once. Nonetheless, the games run satisfactorily, which should be enough for most Vita users.
Aside from the gaming lags, there are two other problems to worry about if this hack is real. If you do it, you are going against Sony’s ToS. If the Vita breaks, Sony isn’t going to do anything to help. Ever since PSP hacking started, bricking your system was a major problem. If this hack is real, consequences could come. Holding out to make sure it is worth it would be wise, as more is sure to come out surrounding remote play as the release date for Vita grows closer.

Are you one of those guys in a helicopter hovering near spawn points inBattlefield 3 (say, an aircraft carrier), wantonly exploiting the game and infuriating players? You may not actually be cheating, but we still think you'rethe worst.
That aside, Battlefield 3 developer DICE is apparently looking to address allcheaters, and not just that guy who ruins the game for everyone with hisstupid, stupid helicopter, as the company has posted an ad for an "anti-cheat administrator." The move follows a recent redoubling of DICE's efforts to combat cheating in its latest game release.
Said administrator will be tasked with a variety of responsibilities, many of which you'd expect a community liaison to handle, though the list is oddly missing "put up with staggering levels of infantile behavior from legal adults." Can you tell we don't like cheaters?

The Simpsons Arcade is headlining February's PlayStation Plus bonuses. Sony offers an HD adaptation of the classic 1991 game free, for Plus members, through the end of the month. This is the Simpsons' first official launch confirmation, with previous sightings exclusive to XBLA, including this set of Xbox achievements spotted earlier this month.
Sony is handing out a special Valentine's Day present for Plus members as well, with a free download of the complete Far Cry 2 game, the week of February 14.
The Simpsons Arcade will include four-player online co-op and will be available at no cost to Plus members from February 7-29 -- and yes, that's a whole extra day this year, probably to contain all of our nostalgic Simpsons love.

January 30th, 2012, 22:15 Posted By: wraggster
Sony has announced an improved bundle in a bid to boost US demand for PlayStation Vita ahead of its launch next month.
Gamespot reports that a limited-time offer will give those buying a $300 Vita with 3G support an 8GB memory card, which retails for $30, as well as 250MB of data through AT&T, and a free download of a PSN game. The standard $300 3G Vita does not come with a memory card, which is required to play several of the launch titlesincluding Uncharted: Golden Abyss.
Those that opt for the $350 3G bundle already get the 4GB memory card, but Sony is also offering 250MB of data, a PSN download, limited edition case and a copy of Little Deviants. There are no similar offers for the WiFi version, which will retail in the US for $250.
The move appears to be designed to ensure that there is demand for the 3G Vita at launch, after Japanese consumers largely opted for the cheaper WiFi-only model when the new handheld launched in Japan last month. One report claimed retailers were cutting the price of the 3G model in a bid to boost sales. Vita will be released in the US, Europe and Australia on February 22.

PlayStation 'under a lot less pressure to go next-gen'
Sony will not likely announce its next generation console before Microsoft makes its move, a key executive at the PlayStation firm has said.
Weeks after it was suggested that Sony would reveal PlayStation 4 plans at E3 in June this year, PlayStation France CEO Philippe Cardon said the firm is "under a lot less pressure" to release a new console.
In an interview with Le Point, Cardon (pictured) was quoted as saying Sony would "probably be the last to announce something".
Two months ago the PlayStation Europe boss Jim Ryan said it would be “undesirable” for the PlayStation 4 to launch later than its rivals – suggesting there has been internal debate on the matter.
Develop understands that incubation groups at several Sony games studios are working on next-generation game concepts.
