'I would be pleased if we reached similar sales to Japan', claims SCEA chief
Sony is upbeat on early sales data for its handheld PS Vita, the console giant’s SCEA boss has said.
Jack Tretton told IGN that he was “very, very positive” about the sales of the portable hardware and its peripherals and software.
“Memory is going out the door very aggressively despite the fact that memory is in a lot of the presale bundles,” said Tretton.
“The software appears to be selling quite well top to bottom."
The Sony boss also claimed that he would be pleased if Vita sold as well in the US as it had done in Japan, which he said had sold 500,000 units in three weeks after its launch in December.

Creating new media format 'completely necessary', says Sony's Scott Rohde
The PS Vita was built to provide long-term protection from piracy, claims Sony exec.
Speaking to Gamasutra, Rohde said that Vita was specifically designed to prevent pirating of its games through its unique cartridge format.
"That was front and centre in the early specs of this machine," he said.
"We needed to have something that would combat piracy from day one, and that's why the cards that you can purchase for the games are in their own proprietary format."
He added that creating the new media format was completely necessary to make sure the system’s titles were not pirated to the extent of the PSP, which, despite its popularity in Japan, suffered from problems with piracy.

The Malaysian student who was brutally assaulted before having his PSP stolen during last summer's London riots will see justice done.17-year-old Londoner Beau Isagba, who broke Ashraf Rossli's jaw and stole his bicycle, will go to jail.Isagba's brutal assault on Rossli, 20, left him bleeding and dazed. After the attack, a gang posing as Good Samaritans rifled through Rossli's bag, stealing his PlayStation Portable. The mugging was captured on video and uploaded to YouTube, where it quickly went viral, shocking the nation.Soon after the attack game publishers stepped in to help Rossli. Sony offered to replace his PSP, and Tekken publisher Namco Bandai sent him games.Isagba told Wood Green Crown Court he was "very, very ashamed of himself", but that didn't prevent a conviction for grievous bodily harm and robbery, the Daily Mail (via VG247) reports.Judge Witold Pawlack said: "He is facing a long prison sentence and there is no reason that I can see why he should remain on bail now."Rossli now has two metal plates in his jaw. Isagba will be sentenced on 9th March. Two other men charged with robbing Rossli will stand trial at a later date.

February 22nd, 2012, 01:41 Posted By: wraggster
As reported earlier this month, a program in Japan that lets users download digital versions of their PSP UMD games to the Vita won't be offered in the US or Europe. Why? According to Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida there just isn't sufficient demand to make it worthwhile for the platform holder.Speaking in an interview with Wired, Yoshida explained that UMD transfers are more of an issue for Japanese gamers because the PSP has enjoyed much greater popularity there than it did in the West and titles are still being released."The system has been introduced in Japan, where there is a much larger demand for PSP games," he explained."When you look at the release schedule of new titles there are still lots of PSP games being released in Japan and being announced for release. Lots of people who are interested in trying Vita are also interested in playing PSP games that they might purchase before Vita comes out, and will not necessarily choose the digital version. So there is a lot more demand… to introduce a program like that."Yoshida added that UMD games are much cheaper in the West than they are in Japan, and it won't cost much more to buy new versions than it would to pay the fee to transfer your existing discs."The other point is that when you look at PSP titles sold digitally in the States or Europe, games are sold for a really reasonable price. You can buy Final Fantasy Tactics for $10. That's a great price," he said."There are many, many games that are sold at an affordable price. Because people in Japan are not getting the digital copy for free, because it costs us money to develop and maintain the system so we are asking people to pay somewhere between $5 and $10 to receive the digital copy in addition to what they have on the UMD."When you compare that to the price of games here, PSP games in Japan are sold at a much higher price, so people see the value in spending the $5 to $10 to get the digital copy. But when the games are already sold at a lower price in the U.S. we see less value in introducing that kind of system."The PS Vita launches in the UK tonight.

Sony development teams in the US and UK are helping Team Ico finish up long-in-the-offing PlayStation 3 adventure The Last Guardian, Sony has confirmed.Speaking in an interview with Wired, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida explained that Sony Santa Monica - the team behind God of War - is among the studios offering help."Well, you know, it's not just Santa Monica," he said."We have great tech people in Worldwide Studios. We have a central tech group in the US and the UK so we are giving them whatever help they need. Technically, we have the best engineers in the US and Europe, so these teams are helping them, giving advice."Elsewhere in the interview, Yoshida reiterated that Team Ico is making slow but steady progress on the game, and "sometimes the team has to go back and review things.""There's a vision that we want to realise but it's very very tough and technical issue that the team is tackling and some plans have to be made to evaluate and go through the process."At one point the progress was great, so we talked about the timing of the launch in the past. But now it's making progress, but still not to the level - it's playable, but not to the point that we can talk about the timing of launch."Team Ico's first project since PlayStation 2 classic Shadow of the Colossus was first announced way back in May 2009, but precious little has been heard since.Late last year, Eurogamer learned that studio head Fumito Ueda is no longer a permanent Sony employee and is finishing the game on a freelance basis.

The PS Vita has a system update lined up for tonight, preceding Wednesday's mainstream launch. Early adopters can update their systems to firmware version 1.61, which adds a Maps application to the home screen, allows for video recording in the Photos application, and allows for any ratings you make in the PlayStation Store to appear on Facebook. Additionally, the Discoveries screen now lists up to 100 players, as well as the number of times they've been seen.
The Content Manager Assistant app has been updated, and is available now both as a Windows and Mac download. Even if you've got version 1.60 already, you should make the jump to 1.61, as Sony says there are some systemwide performance improvements too. The latest firmware can be downloaded on the console over Wi-Fi, or can be updated from a PC or Mac with the Content Manager Assistant.

The Vita version of Street Fighter X Tekken will be the most populous of all. In addition to the PS3/Vita-exclusive Pac-Man, Mega Man, Cole, Toro, and Kuro, Capcom announced twelve extra characters on Vita as part of its Street Fighter 25th Anniversary celebration. The portable fighter will have exclusive access to Street Fighter's Elena, Guy, Cody, Sakura, Dudley and Blanka, and Tekken's Alisa, Christie, Jack, Brian, Lars and Lei.
There may yet be time for these new fighters to show up in the console game: Capcom said that the Vita version would be released in the fall. That gives the publisher plenty of time to release the characters as console DLC. In any case, where's our tiny arcade stick?

Asura's Wrath is out today, which can mean only one thing -- the announcement of DLC. Capcom said Asura's Wrath will be getting several "substantial" DLC packs, two of which are "anime-inspired" episodes that will provide insight into the main game's story. We think Capcom is being humble here; not only do these particular installments look to be inspired by anime, they're rendered in full-blown, traditional Japanese-cartoon style.
We caught wind previously of another DLC installment involving a Street Fighter/Asura's Wrath crossover, and Capcom confirmed players will get to battle Ryu and as-yet unannounced Street Fighter characters, in classic, non-anime 3D. No word yet on release dates or pricing.

The mystery of that spooky teaser email has been definitively solved. Atlus announced plans to localize Persona 4: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena for PS3 and Xbox 360, under the title Persona 4 Arena, which we won't have to look up every time we write about it.
Developed by Arc System Works, the fighter features battles between Persona 3and 4 characters in high-resolution 2D, and will be delivered to North America this summer. So if you were planning to summon a demon to bring this to you -- or import a copy -- you can cancel plans for those extreme measures.

Sony has at last released the complete UK digital launch line-up for PlayStation Vita and, interestingly, Sony has chosen not to mirror its overseas strategy and has priced the digital games at the same RRP they will carry on the High Street.
The most expensive game is EA’s FIFA Football, which costs £44.99. Sony’s AR Suite games are available for free.
The downloads will go live at midnight tonight on the Vita Store. As well as games, a number of apps and demos will also be available.
UPDATE: It appears that some games have been discounted compared to the High Street while others have not. And, as plenty of MCV readers have already pointed out, High Street discounting will ensure that in most cases the digital versions are actually more expensive.

Almost a third of PlayStation 3 owners are "seriously considering" buying a PlayStation Vita.
The finding comes from Playr2, which asked 1321 PS3 owners about Sony's new handheld, which will be on shelves tomorrow.
Thirty-two per cent of respondents said they were "seriously considering" buying a Vita in the near future, according to Eurogamer. Twenty-two per cent of those intend to buy the system within a week of tomorrow's launch.
It's a limited sample, obviously, but will be well received at Sony - especially given that only half of that 32 per cent previously owned Vita's predecessor, PSP.

Uncharted studio Naughty Dog has insisted it currently has "no plans" to develop games for PS Vita, despite claims to the contrary from a Sony executive.
Guy Longsworth, SVP of PlayStation brand marketing, was asked by Gametrailers if the likes of Media Molecule, Sony Santa Monica, Guerrilla and Naughty Dog would be developing for Sony's new handheld.
"Yeah, absolutely you will," he replied. "You'll see a number of games coming out from all our studios." Arne Meyer, Naughty Dog's community and marketing man, took to NeoGaf to set the record straight.
"We're not working on anything for PS Vita," he wrote. "I won't say never, ever, but there's no plans for it right now - we've always felt that consoles play to our strengths ... and desires to push the utmost limit of resources and memory and tech and engine.
"That can change with the right handheld, [which is] why I won't ever say never. We've never made a handheld game, so us saying we're not working on anything at the moment shouldn't be some earth-shattering surprise."
Vita launch title Uncharted: Golden Abyss - the series' handheld debut - was developed by SCE Bend Studio. Sony's PSP successor finally launches in the US and Europe tomorrow, February 22, and in Australia the following day.

Sony has finally revealed the prices for full PS Vita games on the PlayStation Store ahead of the handheld's launch tomorrow.
Of Sony's firstparty titles, Uncharted: Golden Abyss is the most expensive, at £39.99, just £5 less than its retail RRP. WipeOut 2048, Modnation Racers: Road Trip and Everybody's Golf will cost £29.99, while Little Deviants and Reality Fighters are priced at £19.99 apiece.
Thirdparty titles including Rayman Origins, Lumines: Electronic Symphony and Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus are priced at £29.99, while the likes of Touch My Katamari and Michael Jackson The Experience HD are available for a relatively modest £24.99.
Prospective Vita owners expecting digital prices to be significantly cheaper than retail are likely to be disappointed. EA and Codemasters are the biggest culprits, asking £44.99 for FIFA 12and F1 2011 respectively, but Capcom deserve a mention too. Not only does the publisher want £39.99 for Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3, but there's over £40 worth of day-one DLC as well.
As such, it appears those looking for bargains are best off looking at the more modestly priced download-only games. Motorstorm RClooks a steal at £4.79, as does Super Stardust Delta at £6.49.
There are demos, too, of Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Modnation Racers: Road Trip, Dynasty Warriors Next, Unit 13, WipeOut 2048,and FIFA. They, along with apps for Facebook, Twitter, Flickr and Foursquare, will be free to download when the Store is updated at some point this evening.

Filing for creation of 'a real-time three dimensional interactive environment using a depth sensing device'
Sony is building its own Kinect-like motion sensing prototypes, newly released patent files reveal.
As reported by PlayStation lifestyle, the patent was filed in October 2011 to protect the creation of a “real-time three-dimensional interactive environment using a depth sensing device”.
It also describes that the device “includes obtaining depth values indicating distances from one or more physical objects in a physical scene to a depth sensing device.”
It is important to note however that by convention, numerous patent filings by games companies do not materialise into final products.

Platform licenced by BBC Worldwide to develop The Eternity Clock for PS3, Vita and PC
The upcoming Doctor Who game being developed for PS3, Vita and PC has licensed Epic’s Unreal Engine 3 to power the title, the studio has revealed.
The platformer, entitled Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock, is being developed by independent studio Supermassive Games in collaboration with BBC Worldwide.
Based on the well known TV show, the game also features Matt Smith as the doctor and Alex Kingston as River Song.
“At Supermassive, we always try to be very pragmatic about our choice of technology and choose the right tool for the job at hand,” said Supermassive CTO Jonathan Amor.
“Our aim for ‘Doctor Who: The Eternity Clock’ is to match it as closely as possible in aesthetics, tone and sound to the television series, and also to achieve a new level of quality on Sony’s outstanding platforms.

Store spokesperson did not disclose reasons for pulling titles
UK retailer GAME will not be selling any of Ubisoft’s PlayStation Vita launch titles.
Although it has not confirmed the reason, it is presumed that it is down to ongoing negotiations with individual suppliers regarding GAME’s troubled credit insurance status.
At the moment GAME is having to strike deals with publishers for individual titles with special conditions often attached to each agreement. Most recently this saw Namco Bandai title Tekken 3DS missing from GAME upon its release last Friday.
“At this time we will not be selling the following Ubisoft titles; Lumines Electronic Symphony, Michael Jackson: The Experience, Rayman Origins, Asphalt Injection and Dungeon Hunter Alliance,” a spokesperson told VG247.
