Nvidia’s senior VP of content and technology has said that mobile devices will very shortly overtake the PS3 and Xbox 360 in terms of technological clout.
Speaking to Bit-Tech, Tony Tamasi said that the milestone will be achieved when Nvidia releases its next generation of mobile chips after it retires its current Tegra 4 builds.
For comparison, both PS3 and Xbox 360 possess around 200GFlops of graphical clout. Tegra 4 boats some 80GFlops while Nvidia’s latest PC GPU, the Titan, boasts around 4,500GFlops.
Indeed, even the PS4 only houses around 1,800GFlops, according to Bit-Tech’s article.
Of course, while it’s easy to build a smartphone or tablet that easily outperforms current consoles, the nature of handheld computing means that the tech is artificially held back but other constraints – chiefly battery power.
