With E3 seemingly now a shadow of its former self, the gaming industry's focus may shift to the Tokyo Game Show, which just so happens to be only a mere seven days away. TGS 2006 goes from Sept. 22 through 24 at Makuhari Messe in Chiba, Japan. And to whet your appetite, Sony has released a preliminary list of the PSP lineup that should be in playable form at the event.
Ace Combat X: Skies of Deception (Namco Bandai Games)
Bounty Hounds (Namco Bandai Games)
Boxers Road 2: The Real (Ertain)
Gundam Battle Royale (Namco Bandai Games)
Homestar Portable* (Sega)
Jan-Sangokumusou (Koei)
Jeanne D'Arc (Sony Computer Entertainment)
Metal Gear Solid: Digital Graphic Novel (Konami)
Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops* (Konami)
Minna no Golf-jou* (Sony Computer Entertainment)
Monster Hunter Portable 2nd (Capcom)
Navigation Software* (working title) (Edia)
Ratchet and Clank Portable (working title) (Sony Computer Entertainment)
Sarugettchu Piposaru Racer (Sony Computer Entertainment)
Tales of the World Radiant Mythology (Namco Bandai Games)
Tenchi no Mon 2: Busouden (Sony Computer Entertainment)
(* – supports GPS)
In addition the already mentioned games, Sony will show new video of 35 more titles. I believe the big story here is how effectively the GPS games use the add-on. If Sony can get software that show the peripheral is more than a gimmick, the PSP may be able to gain some ground on the DS.

Heres an excerpt:
This game looks gorgeous. There's no way getting around it, but we've all seen screens and video before, so this comes to no surprise. Developer Guerrilla has definitely paid an extreme amount of attention to detail as they try to get as much horsepower out of the PSP as possible, and the results are simply amazing.
The demo drops you into a Dock level where you basically have to make your way through about a dozen enemies, a few sets of infrared-triggered explosives and deal with a nasty rocket-launching baddie to infiltrate the enemy's base. All in all, it will should take you about 20 minutes to complete after restarting a few times. But after you've mastered it, it will only take a few minutes to get through the level. However, it's enough to show you what the game is all about.

The original rhythm game is making a return on the PSP. According to the latest Famitsu, Sony Computer Entertainment is working on a remake of the original PaRappa the Rapper for Japanese PSP release this Winter.
"Remake" is the word that Famitsu uses to describe the game. While the screenshots shown in the magazine suggest a similar look to that of the original, the game will reportedly have new elements. Wirelss play will be included, allowing players to compete with one another and share demo presents. Other bonus features are expected as well.
PaRappa was one of the biggest success stories of the original PlayStation era, right along side Toro the cat from Doko Demo Issyo. While the success didn't continue onto the PS2 (PaRappa 2 was somewhat of a flop), we can't wait for a reunion on the PSP

Toshiba Corp. said profit will rise at its system LSI unit, maker of the processor powering Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3, as Japan's largest chipmaker produces more semiconductors for flat-screen televisions and digital cameras.
Operating profit margins at the unit will rise to 10 percent by as early as 2010, Masashi Muromachi, head of the Tokyo-based company's chip operations, said in a Sept. 12 interview. The unit accounts for 41 percent of Toshiba's chip sales.
Toshiba cut development costs of system LSI chips, which combine multiple computing functions on a single piece of silicon, to bring the business to break even last fiscal year. The company is counting on demand for flat-panel TVs, game consoles and digital cameras to improve earnings at the unit and narrow the gap with Texas Instruments Inc.'s 21 percent margin last year.

Robert A. and Percival have just released a new version of the second homebrew game for 2.70-2.80 firmwares (technically compatible with all firmwares 2.0-2.80), TIFF Pong. The update replaces the "multiplayer" aspect of the Pong game with a computer AI, comparable to the AI of GTA Pong (released by Percival and Robert A. back in the early days of the GTA exploit), making the game considerably more fun, and much more addictive. v0.2 also fixes the game exiting issue, and no longer requires a hard reset in order to quit the game. A few stability fixes have also been added, download it and have fun!
New features/fixes in v0.2 include:
- AI for 2.7-2.8 fixed (single player mode).
- Easy exit method fixed (no more hard resets).
- Code optimized and better overall stability.
Note: If you're having trouble getting this to work, try highlighting the 'pong' folder in the 'PHOTO' menu on your memory stick, then press 'Start' to start a slideshow. This seems to be the most reliable method for running it.

While Namco appears not have struck gold with its most recent title, it may be able to strike it with its newest upcoming game – Warhammer WarCry: Battle for Atluma, which will be the PSP's first card-based battle game.
The game will be based on the Warhammer card game and will give players the option of leading the Grand Alliance or Hordes of Darkness to victory. Allowing players to collect more than 450 cards, 90 different units and the ability to wirelessly connect with a friend to battle it out for each other's cards has me tickled to death with excitement. Warhammer WarCry also allows for the building of custom decks and features an extensive tutorial system for us noobs out there.
I gotta be honest, I'm not too familiar with the Warhammer series; instead I've been more of a Magic: The Gathering kind of guy. But I'm up for any decent card-based battle game on the go, and we won't have too wait long, either, as Warhammer WarCry is set to ship Oct. 17.

Users of modchipped videogame consoles could face fines of up to AU$6600 under new laws being put in place by the Australian Federal Government, a news alert from law firm Minter Ellison says. Those who distribute or offer modchipped devices could face fines of up to AU$60,500 and/or up to five years in jail.
The new laws, which are being put in place to comply with Australia's obligations under the Australia United States Free Trade Agreement (AUSFTA), will be in effect from 1 January 2007. A draft of the legislation was released for public comment earlier this week. According to the Minter Ellison statement, the "AUSFTA requires Australia to prohibit the use of devices and services to circumvent technological protection measures (TPM)".
Some exemptions to the law will be put in place, including for those doing computer security testing, law enforcement and library use.

Heres an excerpt:
Much like its hand-held predecessor, this game is set around a location most GTA veterans are familiar with. The events that take place in this game happen two years prior to Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, and as such the game world is both familiar and refreshingly different. You play a 28 year old soldier called Victor 'Vic' Vance, the rather more level headed brother to Lance Vance who adorned our screens in Vice City on PlayStation 2. Vic has been placed in Vice City as an easy posting job before being moved onto Guantanamo Bay, and soon ends up experiencing the seedier side of life (alongside trying to save his brother half the time).
Rockstar's PJ Sim detailed the setting and the time line a little bit more, with an interesting backdrop that not only keeps an existing game world fresh, but adds depth, character and history to the PS2's Vice City: "The city at this point in time is experiencing a state of change, with construction work going on to rebuild the place. As a result, there's a big divide between the rich and the poor, allowing for a lot of corruption on many levels, from crime syndicates and drug dealing to crooked politicians."

Call of Duty 3, Tony Hawk's Project 8 and Marvel: Ultimate Alliance will all be available at the US launch of PlayStation 3 this November, according to Activision big-wig Robert Kotick.
Kotick then went on to unveil publisher Activision's plans for the next 12 months, with Spider-Man 3, Shrek the Third and Transformers set for a June release, followed by a new Call of Duty, Tony Hawk Next, The Bee Movie, a Marvel title and a new Guitar Hero game later in the year.
Several of these are working titles but it's no surprise that Activision plans to continue releasing new versions of its strongest games.
During his revealing presentation at a recent conference, Kotick also confirmed that Activision's PS3 games would be priced at the same level as its 360 games: "We have not seen a lot of consumer resistance at the higher price points and we expect that all of our next-gen products will be launched at $60 (£31) price points".
Which is depressing, really, as it suggests that Activision could go lower if it were forced to.
Of course, don't expect to see that dollar-to-pound converted price of around £30 slapped on PS3 titles in our neck of the woods. Despite 360's high-priced games, Dead Rising, Saints Row and Test Drive Unlimited have all shot high into the charts this week at an RRP of £50, and you can bet your last penny that we won't see a change to the premium pricing in the near future.

Take-Two Interactive has had its share of controversies in the last couple of years. The discovery of a sex minigame in Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, dubbed "Hot Coffee," and that game's subsequent rerating comes in at the high end of the controversy scale for inspiring federal gaming legislation, while the discovery of a "nude" skin and more violence than was initially rated in The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion seemed to cause less of a stir.
In between the two was Bully. Originally announced in May of 2005, the game puts players in the role of a student at the fictional Bullworth Academy, where the protagonist is said to "stand up to bullies, get picked on by teachers, play pranks on malicious kids, win or lose the girl, and ultimately learn to navigate the obstacles of the fictitious reform school." Critics soon jumped on the game, labeling it "a Columbine simulator," calling for it to be banned, and demanding that Take-Two stop production of the game.
A new wrinkle has entered the discussion today, as the Entertainment Software Rating Board told GameSpot that Bully has been rated T for Teen. When it hits the PlayStation 2 next month, Bully will carry content descriptors warning consumers of "Crude Humor, Violence, Sexual Themes, Language and Use of Alcohol & Tobacco." According to the ESRB rating guide, T for Teen games have content that "may be suitable for ages 13 and older."
Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter told GameSpot he actually expected the game to get a T-for-Teen rating given recent information Take-Two has released on the game since confirming the October launch.
"I think that Take-Two generated a lot of unintentional bad will with the Hot Coffee fiasco, and I think that they are trying to enhance their reputation by avoiding controversy where it doesn't help their business," Pachter said. "Bully will be just as fun with a T rating as it would have been with an M [for Mature] rating. To be honest, I think that Manhunt would have performed better with the violence toned down a bit. It was an incredible game but got a lot of criticism from the gaming press for over-the-top violence."
Pachter said he wasn't sure if the game's rating would help or hurt its prospects at retail but said he didn't expect the game to be a huge seller, anyway.
"I have low unit estimates for the game, especially since it's only on PS2," Pachter said, "so it will likely not have a dramatic impact on the bottom line. If anything, there is probably some upside to my estimates if the game performs well."

The price of next-gen console games was a hot issue last year when the bulk of Xbox 360 launch titles carried a $60 price tag. This week, Activision CEO Robert Kotick confirmed what many gamers already expected or even assumed: the company's PlayStation 3 games will retail for roughly $60.
In a presentation to the Merrill Lynch Media and Entertainment Conference yesterday, Kotick indicated that the company is taking a next-gen pricing approach to its next-gen software, thanks in part to its success pricing PlayStation Portable games at $50, and Xbox 360 software like the best-selling Call of Duty 2 at $60.
"We have not seen a lot of consumer resistance at the higher price points and we expect that all of our next-generation products will be launched at $60 price points," Kotick said.
On the surface that would suggest $60 Wii games from the company, but an Activision representative confirmed for GameSpot that Kotick was only referring to PS3 and Xbox 360 games. In fact, the publisher's Activision Value label is already preparing a pair of Wii launch titles: Rapala Tournament Fishing and World Series of Poker.
Since the Xbox 360 launched last year, some publishers have defended the $59.99 standard price for next-gen releases by citing the increased development costs associated with the new platforms. While Kotick did not bring the example up specifically in relation to the company's pricing strategy on games, he did mention that Spider-Man 3 has cost the company more than $35 million to develop on all formats. He did not specify on which consoles the game would appear."
"That is the most expensive product that we've created, and for good reason," Kotick said. "You'll see how much it really takes advantage of the assets and the capabilities of the hardware."
