Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria tells the story of another valkyrie sister that takes place hundreds of years before Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth. In this latest installment of the legendary RPG series, divine insurrection besieges the heavens. Invoking his power as king of the gods, Odin hastily reincarnates the spirit of rebel valkyrie Silmeria into Alicia, Princess of Dipan. However, unbeknownst to Odin, the spirit of the battle maiden awakens within Alicia, still seeking vengeance. Believing his daughter to be possessed, King Barbarossa of Dipan declares Alicia dead and exiles her to a faraway castle. Odin learns of Silmeria's awakening and dispatches the imperious Hrist Valkyrie to summon her spirit to Valhalla. New from SuccessHK

The book by Mario Puzo and the classic film serve as inspiration here, as gamers will join the Corleone family and earn respect through loyalty and fear as they rise through the ranks to become Don in a living 1945-1955 New York. The Godfather: Mob Wars is a new experience for the PSP system that engages gamers in a turf war as you take over territory in the strategic Mob Wars mode unique to the PSP version of the game. Maneuver your mobsters and play the right cards (literally -- the game's Mob Wars gameplay is played out with cards and boards, like a traditional strategy game) to take control of NYC one territory at a time. Once things heat up, drop down on the streets to start knocking heads around and claiming territory in action-packed game sequences.

Irrational's BioShock is up there in our most wanted next-gen titles. As we mentioned in news earlier this month it's been known for some time that the game would be making its way to PS3 in 2007, in addition to already confirmed versions on PC and Xbox 360.
So it is with the minimum of surprise that we just received the first PS3 screens of BioShock, which, we think you will agree, look simply delicious. We've put calls in to publisher Take 2 today regarding BioShock, and we aim to bring you a more detailed and updated preview on the title very soon. Hopefully we will also be able to see a little more at Microsoft's X06 shindig in sunny Barcelona next week.
Meanwhile, our guys in Japan will be keeping their eyes peeled for all the latest news from the Tokyo Games Show, which kicks off this coming Friday, so we will be sure to let you know all the latest news from the showfloor as soon as they stop playing the damn games and decide to phone us.

It's alive! An anonymous insider at the PS3 Forums snapped a pic of a working PLAYSTATION 3 with a mobile phone. What's more, the insider said the machine is relatively quiet, save for some booting noise. The console had apparently been on for 12 hours with no overheating problems. Another pic, after the jump, shows the console's back. The closer cable is the power cable, while the other one is the HDMI cable. As we get mentally prepared to pay for the machine, this inside info is comforting.

News from Eurogamer
Tetsuya Mizuguchi has been talking about Lumines II at the Nordic Game event in Malmö, Sweden.
Playing through levels featuring music from New Order and Beck, the Japanese developer bashfully grinned, "This is the first time I show Lumines II in public in the world."
And everyone clapped.
"For Lumines II, the concept is, 'How can we combine the music and music video in a game?' We have cooperation from ten famous artists from the western market and artists from Asia, and we put 100 tracks into it. We have music from Black Eyed Peas, Beck, Missy Elliot, Chemical Brothers, Stephanie, Junior Senior, Go! Team, Junkie XL and New Order. So, which artist do you want?"

SEGA has inked a deal with Deep Fried Entertainment for the Vancouver-based developer to work on new content for the PlayStation Portable.
Deep Fried was launched in 2005 by a team made up of individuals who have previously worked on titles such as Need for Speed Underground, NFL Gameday and Baldur’s Gate.
"SEGA understands the handheld market like few other publishers," said Brenda Bailey, COO of Deep Fried Entertainment.
"This understanding of the market, coupled with SEGA's deep respect for creativity and innovation, makes the company an ideal partner for our current team."
SEGA continues to push its commitment to create titles with Western development teams, and comes following similar deals with Bizarre Creations, Pseudo Interactive, Silicon Knights and Monolith Productions, amongst others.
"Deep Fried Entertainment brings a unique blend of talent and expertise to the table," said Simon Jeffery, president and COO of SEGA of America.
"This agreement reinforces our commitment to establish strategic partnerships with top development talent in North America," he added

It's play time for Rockstar's Canis Canem Edit as a new trailer surfaces and introduces us to school life in Bullworth Academy. Dr Crabblesnitch, school principal, informs us of the supposed virtues of Bullworth Academy in the trailer, but suffice to say the reality revealed is somewhat different. As in very, very bad. Yep, naughty kids and crazy teachers - it all takes us back to a time when all we had to worry about was whether our mums would discover our, ah, biology literature hidden under the mattress. It's sort of funny, so have a free chuckle on us.

You'll know how much we like GTA here on CVG, we've always considered the series one of the flagships on the very cutting edge of gaming (well, since the move to 3D anyway). However, during a recent and rather attractive demo of the rather excellent GTA: Vice City Stories, representatives for the developer indicated - a little surprisingly - that the newest and hottest PSP GTA offering is unlikely to make the transition back onto PS2.
You'll remember that GTA: Liberty City Stores, as well as being the must-buy title for PSP when it was originally launched, proved so popular that it made a more than successful debut back onto PS2, so that home console gamers could enjoy its many delights without leaving the comfort of an armchair.
However, it seems that it's unlikely to be the case with Vice City Stories, with Rockstar saying this is mainly because it doesn't want to cause confusion with the launch of the all-consuming GTA IV which is set to make its next-gen debut in October 2007. There's also probably a bit of a resource issue, with Rockstar no-doubt going flat out to fill GTA IV with lashings of innovative gaming goodness - it might simply not be able to spare the time to make a Vice City Stories PS2 version happen.
A little bit of a shame really, as in our not so humble opinion VCS looks well capable of such a feat, but alas it seems Rockstar wants to concentrate on its next-gen efforts. Unless of course you can change its mind and petition the chaps to make it happen. A good start could be in our comments field below, where you can begin your campaign!

Sony is targeting hardcore market with new console, says Bonnell
Speaking in an exclusive interview with Games Industry.biz, Atari CEO Bruno Bonnell has confirmed that the publisher has no plans to release any PS3 games before 2007.
Bonnell said Atari intends to support all three next-gen consoles "fairly equally", adding, "It's just that we're lacking information about the PS3 at this stage, because we have basically a rough release date and a high retail price point.
"As far as the Wii and the Xbox 360 go, we'll be there for this season; for PS3, we'll probably have to wait a little later in the year before we release some new titles." And, according to Bonnell, that means no Atari titles on PS3 until 2007.
The PS3 is slated for a global launch this November, priced at 499 Euro for the 20GB model and 599 Euro for the 60GB version. But Bonnell does not believe that the console's high point puts it at any risk of failure: "I think that by deciding to put the PS3 at this price, Sony has chosen to really differentiate itself from the other consoles.
"The fact that you have Blu-ray, and the fact that it's HD compatible - all this is driving me to think that Sony is picking up the high-end of the market, the hardcore, passionate fans. There will be a time they can reduce the price and access more people, but clearly that's a technical choice that Sony has made to be selective on the field at stage one," he added.

New preorder from SuccessHK

A vicious circle of violence has erupted. The battle torn continent of Neverland is caught up in a great war between good and evil once again. Now, three young soldiers rise to put an end to this madness once and for all. In Spectral Souls (a remake of a PS2 title called Shinki Gensou Spectral Souls II from Japan), the player will switch between the three opposing kingdoms to play the Royal Demon Kingdom, the Imperial Army, or the Rebel Army. Depending on how you progress through the game with each of the forces, the story of the game will change. For those familiar with the import, Idea Factory has added new gameplay elements, including a new Unlimited Level, which allows you to continue raising your character levels with no limit.

Via PSP3d:
FreePlay has just ported yet another homebrew favorite to the TIFF 2.7-2.80 (and, once again, 2.0, 2.01, 2.5, 2.6) firmware exploit. FileAssistant, originally created by Lin J.R, is an application which allows you to copy, move, rename, and delete files and folders both on the memory stick, and in the PSP's flash1, as well as copy files from the PSP's flash0 to flash1 or your memory stick.
This version is considered, in FreePlay's own words, as a "stripped-down version of the previous versions", since there is no working battery level indicator, nor support for UMD options (since the TIFF exploit does not yet have the proper firmware access needed to perform those actions, as the program stands at the moment). However, FreePlay does plan to make a new release in the future, hopefully fixing those capabilities. He also states that this version of FileAssistant is actually faster at reading/writing then all the non-TIFF releases; great work FreePlay!
UPDATE - New release:
Not satisfied with TIFF FileAssistant the way it was, FreePlay has updated his port of the file management application to version 0.06! The new version features UMD reading and a working battery meter. He has also updated a few dialogs to make them easier to understand.

Chilean film director Jorge Olguin has signed up to direct the cinematic version of Capcom's Clock Tower survival horror, IMDB and the excellently named Gorezone.net are reporting.
Olguin's previous work includes Angel negro and Sangre eterna. The latter is described by IMDBers as a pretty decent vampire film given the shoestring budget.
According to Gorezone, Olguin will waste no time getting going, with a Todd Farmer (Jason X) script already in place for production to begin in December.
Previously we'd heard that Clock Tower would focus on the third game in the series, which follows a little girl called Alyssa as she tries to get out of the way of annoying spirits by solving puzzles.

To paraphrase the Arctic Monkeys, Codemasters bets that you look like an idiot on the Internet - and so they've set up a competition to find out.
The idea is to record a video of yourself dancing - whether you're good or bad - and if the viewing public recommend you then you could win tickets to see Pink play at Wembley Arena.
Obviously it's all part of a push to promote PlayStation 2 rhythm-action game Dance Factory, which features songs by the Pussycat Dolls and others, and allows you to dance to music from any other CD you happen to throw in the disc drive.
All you have to do to enter the competition is upload a video of yourself dancing to the Dance and Win website. Each week someone will get their hands on five tickets for the gig.
Better yet, the winners will be entered into a grand final, and victory there means you get upgraded to VIP status, with chauffeur-driven limo and hotel accommodation in London for the night of the gig.
And if you're simply awful, you might end up in the "Dance Disasters" section instead.
The competition runs until October 13th, and anybody voting on the videos gets entered into a prize draw to win a copy of the game and a dance mat.

Developer Neversoft has dropped online play from the PlayStation 3 version of Tony Hawk's Project 8, a key third-party launch title for Sony's next-gen console.
The developer has only recently received development kits for the PlayStation 3 and has not had time to implement online play ahead of the consoles' US and Japanese launch in November, according to an article on IGN.
"Neversoft is confident the PS3 version of the game will ship at launch in November, but it still hasn't received all of the software libraries and has no indication of how the online components will work on PS3, so it's not offering them," detailed the report.
With online play a major battleground for all the next-generation consoles, the loss of online features for a key third-party franchise could prove to be another blow for Sony - already dealing with the aftermath of a delay to the European launch of the console.
Neversoft was the first developer to offer online play for the PlayStation 2 with the launch of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3 in October 2001, well ahead of Sony's official online service.
Tony Hawk's Project 8 for the Xbox 360 will support up to eight players online, as well as other features over the Xbox Live service.
Publisher Activision was unable to offer comment at the time of writing.
