Sony Computer Entertainment Europe has informed CVG that sales of PS3 in Europe have topped the 600,000 unit figure, meaning a hefty portion of the million units for the European launch has already been snapped up.
In the UK, the console shifted 165,000 units in its first two days of sale, moving Sony's Phil Harrison to hail the launch of PS3 in the UK as the biggest product launch ever.
"We are already seeing across Europe out of stock situations where retailers re re-ordering. It was always our strategy to have a good supply. There's never been a launch of a console in Europe that's had a million pieces of hardware sold in or available", Harrison said in a Game Theory Podcast.

Sony has updated the PSP firmware to version 3.30, which enhances the handheld's PlayStation Network functionality, boosting its support for future PSone games released over the network.
Enhancements also include the option to set the load speeds for PSone games, which can be downloaded via the PS3 onto your PSP, allowing you to speed up loading times, although increasing the speed can cause problems with some games.
The maximum resolution of video files that the PSP can play has also been upped, as well as the ability to display thumbnails for videos stored in the PSPs video folder. The new firmware will also support thumbnails for items in the RSS section.

Sony's Phil Harrison has hailed the launch of PS3 in the UK as the biggest product launch ever, in the wake of the revelation that the console shifted 165,000 units in its first two days of sale.
"In the UK 165,000 units were sold through to consumers in the first 48 hours, and that is over £100 million worth of business going through UK retail tills in PS3 hardware, software and peripherals", Harrison said in the Game Theory Podcast.
"This not only makes it the most successful games hardware launch, we think it is the most successful consumer launch of a product in the UK".
He added that Sony staffers have been scratching heads trying to think of a consumer product "that has achieved that level of consumer sales in such a short period of time", then going on to talk about sales and supply strategies.
"We are already seeing across Europe out of stock situations where retailers re re-ordering. It was always our strategy to have a good supply. There's never been a launch of a console in Europe that's had a million pieces of hardware sold in or available.
"We've kept some back in order to continue to supply the market. It's been a tremendous success and something that we are very pleased about."

Microsoft has officially confirmed a new Xbox 360 is in the making and will be released in April in the US. We're still waiting for European details but in the meantime, Sony has had its say on the new console with a HDMI port and 120GB hard drive.
Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing for Sony Computer Entertainment America, released the following: "We think every PlayStation 3 owner should have an 'elite' experience, which is why we include an internal hard drive and HDMI output in every PS3 we sell, along with the 50GB of storage capacity on a high definition Blu-ray disc.
"Sony has been the strongest advocate of high definition as the future of next-generation gaming. This requires high-definition components, including HDMI output, and large storage devices to deliver and store all that rich and vivid HD content. Microsoft's announcement today not only legitimises Sony's PS3 strategy, it moves us closer to adopting universal standards in the area of high definition gaming that will benefit game developers and ultimately the end user."
Do we detect a bit of the old "told you so" in there...?

Whispers emanating from the Capcom forums are tipping Capcom's April 12 event as the possible place to be for the unveiling of Resident Evil 5 for PS3 and 360.
Whenever a major publisher plans an event for the press, it's usually to show off something new and make a few announcements. We already know what one of those announcements will be, but we've been sworn to secrecy for the time being.
All eyes are now on Resident Evil and whether the firm will show the fifth instalment of the series or Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles on Wii. We'll let you know as Capcom Day moves closer.

Hastings has updated a blog with his ten reasons why he thinks PS3 is the one to beat in the next-gen console war. Quickly though, he points out that "Insomniac is a 100% independent development studio. Sony has neither endorsed nor authorized what I'm writing here."
He added, "I wanted to address an ongoing industry phenomenon. Specifically, the sheer volume of negative spin toward Sony from both the mainstream press and the internet community. Mere minutes after Sony announced a beautiful, ground breaking, free, community-enhancing online PS3 service, 100 internet posters were trying to argue that this was somehow a bad thing.
"Whether you love or hate Sony, if you're trying to spin Home as a bad thing I can only conclude that you're part of Microsoft's $3.2 billion viral marketing campaign."
Without further ado, Hastings' ten reasons you need to sit up and listen to PS3.

Sony sneakily snuck out a new firmware upgrade for PSP: the first in almost two months. Here's the list of the improvements for this firmware revision:
Support for displaying thumbnails for items has been added under [RSS Channel].
Support for PLAYSTATION Network titles has been expanded.
The size of videos that can be played under [Video] has been increased.
Support for displaying thumbnails for content saved in the "VIDEO" folder of a Memory Stick has been added under [Video].
Update: For those without wi-fi access, the update can be downloaded here. Save it on your PSP under this directory: PSP/GAME/UPDATE. It does not appear as if full-resolution video has been fully unlocked. More details will certainly arise over the new few hours, so stay tuned.
Remember if you upgrade you lose homebrew.

Triple Triad is no ordinary piece of homebrew. Like Wandria, or Hexaxis, this title is pushing the limits of what we thought homebrew development could produce. But, this game isn't a graphical showcase. Rather, it's pushing the online capabilities of the system, becoming the first ever homebrew MMO game.
The game is based on the card game from Final Fantasy VIII, with over 330 cards from Final Fantasy VII, VIII and X (with XI to come later). Not only will you be able to buy, sell and trade your cards with others, you'll also be able to send each other private messages, chat during the game, and more. You'll be able to have a friends list, a blacklist, and you'll also be able to track the movements of other players. Quite ambitious, is it not?
Hopefully, this revolutionary project will be able to deliver on all its promises. There won't be too long to wait, though: the game is planned to release this Monday.

This probably shouldn't come as a huge surprise to anyone who has been on a plane since September 11th, 2001, but in a recent article by Yomiuri, we've learned that Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport has official restricted the use of the wireless multiplayer functions of portable game systems, namely the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.
The justification behind the rule is the same as virtually all other rules associated with the use of wireless technologies inside airplanes: they may cause interference with cabin equipment. I was under the impression that this kind of thing never actually happened and was just a precaution, but according to the Ministry there have been more than 200 reported incidents since 1993 related to such interference.

Daxter was a tremendous success on PSP, even without the presence of his broody, angsty teen co-star, Jak. Well, a rumor is circulating around the web, speaking about the possibility of a PSP Jak game. The (warning) oft-unreliable Wikipedia appears to have a record of the rumor: it began when the resume of voice actor Robin Atkins Downes revealed two unannounced titles: Jak PSP and Big. Since then, Big has turned into Naughty Dog's upcoming PS3 title, Uncharted: Drake's Fortune. Could Jak PSP be far behind?
The only other evidence supporting this rumor comes from a previous job opening at Naughty Dog, requesting PSP-specific developers. With Ready at Dawn working on God of War, it could be possible that Naughty Dog is working on a PSP Jak game internally. However, with no concrete evidence available right now, this rumor remains exactly that. But, a new Jak game would certainly be a good part of a revived effort to make the platform successful.

Sony handled the UMD as a movie format terribly and so it's no surprise that movie studios and retail stores have backed out of supporting it. Seeing recent exceptions like Borat or Casino Royale got me thinking: When will the last UMD movie be released? A trip to Sony Style lists Stomp the Yard as their last UMD available for pre-order with a release date of May 15th. Amazon had a few other UMDs listed to come out after Stomp the Yard, but the release date was listed as being in the year 2025, so it's very likely that these UMDs have been canceled. In any case it's painfully obvious, this is the last year we'll see new UMD releases. Is anyone that reads this site still buying UMD movies new, or do you just buy them if they're on clearance?
I actually like the UMD Format very much, perfect for movies on the go

Easy to learn, but hard to master. That one saying applies to a large number of brain teasing games and puzzles that have challenged players over the years. Chess is built on this concept, with numerous strategies and moves that players use and exploit to win matches. The recent popularity of Sudoku shows how math and deduction skills can be applied to solve tricky puzzles. Now, D3 and Metia Interactive are taking the "easy to learn, but hard to master" adage in a new direction, posing new problems to puzzle fans with their upcoming title, Cube.
The concept behind Cube is extremely simple to understand -- players have to take a cube from its starting point on a level suspended in mid-air to the goal in the shortest amount of time possible. Along the way, you'll need to collect keys that are scattered around each level. However, things are a bit more complicated than simply trying to roll your block from point A to point B. For one thing, there's a large number of hazards scattered around every single level, ranging from static and moving bombs to fired bullets and disintegrating floors. More than 13 different obstacles can be found within the game, and running into any one of these hazards can immediately destroy your block, forcing you to restart the level. For another thing, there are a number of gaps that will crop up between your cube and the goal, requiring you to find substitute squares to fill in the missing level pieces or triggers to rebuild lost areas.
Fired bombs are just one of your problems in Cube.Fortunately, your cube has a couple of tricks to navigate around the hazardous stages. For one thing, your cube can literally fasten itself to any surface of a level, allowing it to move along the undersides or tops of stages with ease. Thinking in this three dimensional manner is sometimes the only way that you can adequately reach keys, avoid hazards or get to your goal. Since your cube is a simple block without any offensive or defensive abilities, you'll also need to utilize other items in each stage, such as switches that can turn off traps or directional blocks that might propel your cube into various threats. This might seem somewhat disorienting, but luckily players can manipulate the camera around to give you a better perspective on what could literally be around the next corner. This is especially useful on some of the more complex three dimensional stages where bombs move along specific paths, popping in and out of holes that you aren't able to see at times until it's too late.
Quickly flying through each stage will give you Gold, Silver or Bronze ratings, which can help unlock additional features such as bonus levels, music and new challenges to go through. With nine total zones, each with their own different themes and hazards, and 135 different levels to explore, players will have a massive amount of replay value as they attempt to better their times at the various puzzles. Multiplayer hasn't been left out either, as you'll be able to play either battle or cooperatively with friends in more than 35 levels. Even better, once you've exhausted every stage within the game, players will be able to build new stages to explore thanks to the large level editor, which will also allow you to share your created levels with friends.

For the last couple of days, I could've sworn it was 2006. Alas, that awful year is gone forever. That makes this news all the more manageable -- mid-2008 is approximately one year away. Taiwanese game developers and operators made the claim that the PS3 will surpass the 360 in mid-2008:
"The PS3 is less competitive than the Xbox 360 in terms of number of titles and with the Wii in the creativity of its games, according to the sources. There are only 11 games specifically developed for the PS3, and Sony's 3D web community platform PlayStation Home is not yet available."
Okay. Um... how do we respond? The same way we've responded to the quadrillion analysts! Time will tell. Except... we think Sony is very creative in its first-party titles. Team Ico, anyone? David Jaffe? Etc, etc? Number of titles... well, yeah, we don't have that quite yet. By mid-2008 we should, though! Even White Knight Story should be out by then... oh, yeah. Can't wait for that.

Via joystiq comes an update on the slur by Sony UK boss calling USA people Cheap:
Near the PS3 launch in Europe, Sony's UK Managing Director Ray Maguire was interviewed by GI.biz, and while discussing the cost of the PS3 in the UK said, "If you take what's considered to be the most expensive and the least expensive -- consider the US with its massive land and cheap people. Then you look at the UK -- a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium, and the cost of people is a lot more."
Coincidentally, in the same interview Maguire also said, "Nowadays, with how the media works, not only does information fly around at the speed of light, so does mis-information. With blogs on the increase, people's thought processes are transferred from one place to another and picked up by people who might be lazy when it comes to finding out whether something is true or not."
Well, to prove him wrong, 1UP went and followed up with Sony America today. They explained what Maguire was trying to say is that the cost of living and labor are different in the two countries. The minimum wage in the UK is roughly $10/hr USD against the US's $5.15/hr. 1UP concludes, "Wouldn't that make us, essentially, 'cheaper?'" Well, no. By that thought process the U.S. is essentially poorer. Sony is doing the U.S. a favor by making the PS3 cheaper for the well-populated, but poor, country.

A Playstation 3 advertisement which appeared on the CNA website claimed that "The PS3 is built on the revolutionary cell-processor, which is 8 times more powerful than most computers" and that the "RSX Graphics Technology - twice as powerful as the most advanced computer graphics engine available today."
Four complainants disputed these claims saying that the advertisement is misleading as the respondent has no proof to substantiate the claims.
The Advertising Standards Authority of SA upheld the complaint and ordered CNA to withdraw the claims with immediate effect.
