To coincide with the UK release of the PlayStation 3, Sony and Polyphony Digital have revved their engines and moved Gran Turismo HD to the European PlayStation Store. But while US and Japanese gamers are still running laps in version 1.1, UK gamers have gotten the world's first taste of Gran Turismo HD Concept 2.0.
Largely identical to version 1.1 (and 1.0 for that matter), GTHD 2.0 includes the same 10 cars, the Eiger Nordwand track and time trial and drift options. However, there's one major difference: Version 2.0 includes Force Feedback support. Yes indeed, now that Sony and Immersion have kissed and made up, Polyphony has been able to implement the technology into the game. Listing official support for four Logitech wheels, namely the Driving Force Pro, GT Force, Driving Force and Driving Force EX, racers are now able to actually feel the road as they compete for leading laps times on the game's online leaderboard.
We plugged in a Driving Force Pro, the same wheel that we used to review Gran Turismo 4, and took a few laps with each of the game's 10 available vehicles. The implementation seems to be very basic for the time being, perhaps just a "we're going to do it" proof of concept. Much of the feedback feels like it's based only on engine feedback rather than the road. While you'll feel a jolt when you drive on or off the track, you won't feel pebbles, grass or anything of that sort.
As the first couple cars are rather underpowered, you might not even realize that it's on. Once you get up to the Ferrari 599 GTB, the wheel does provide a great bit more feedback and lets you know whether or not your wheels are on the ground, but only subtly. Again, it doesn't feel as if everything in the world has been assigned a Force Feedback variable yet, so compared to what we saw in Gran Turismo 4 it's a pretty weak implementation.
It's only a start, however, and we have no doubt that Polyphony will nail Force Feedback by the time that Gran Turismo 5 actually ships. For now, you can sleep better knowing just that.

Perhaps one of the most fondly remembered non-Nintendo series on the NES, the Ninja Gaiden franchise was practically the pinnacle of action gaming on said platform. When Tecmo brought back the series in March of 2004 to the original Xbox, Ryu and company were once again vaulted to the top of action gaming. And now, Tecmo aims to do the same to the next-generation (is it current-gen yet?) with Ninja Gaiden Sigma on the PlayStation 3.
Sigma can best be described as a remastered version of Ninja Gaiden for the Xbox. With all of the content from Ninja Gaiden Black in tow and a healthy dose of new and enhanced content to encourage existing fans to plunk down $60, Ninja Gaiden Sigma is set for release late this Spring on the PS3. Tecmo stopped by our offices today to give us an in-depth look at the game, and yep, Ryu looks set to do it all over again.

Quinn isn't the type of cat I'd want to hang out with.
The first main character in Aedis Eclipse: Generation of Chaos, Quinn is sitting in some boring military school class when an evacuation siren goes off and a voice over the loudspeaker starts screaming about incoming enemies. Instead of running like any smart Greckland resident would, the boy grabs Gon, a school-age chum Quinn feels the need to insult every so often, and runs to the trenches for an up-close and personal view of the enemy's newest toy.
Kids these days.
With an afternoon of Aedis Eclipse under my belt, I can tell you that the feel of those first well-paced moments as we meet Quinn and Gon - two of the more than 40 playable characters in this NIS America and Never-Land Company title - isn't lost as the story unfolds. Battles lurk around every corner, and a 2-D combat view keeps the fights fresh and animated.
Aedis Eclipse is a 35-hour RPG that spans three worlds - divine, surface and lower - while spinning a larger yarn involving "the darkness" and "souls of the other world" from the tale's meager beginning in Quinn's classroom. As players journey from the tutorials and ease of the Quinn's home in the lower world, an existence devoid of magic and fantasy and grounded in human achievement, the difficulty increases and the story gets deeper as the ascending levels focus more on demons, angels and dragons.
Although I felt that I had to tap buttons several times for the clunky, ugly menu system to progress, map textures were blocky, colors were washed out and some of the on-screen visuals were blurred, a solid, interesting set of characters and an intriguing story kept me compelled as I moved through the oh-so-easy beginning battles with beetles and Cyber Suits and began to add captains to my squad.
It's on, Jerkstore!Captains drive this game. Although you'll maneuver the map in seemingly small teams, when a battle breaks out it'll be your leader running into the fray followed by a plethora of soldiers ready to kick ass and take names. You'll get to choose eight formations - aggressive, surround, create-your-own, etc. - for your troops to take and then monitor the 2D battle using the PSP's nub.
Micromanagers can get hands-on and move the team around the screen or adjust strategies for different groups of troops, and laid-back leaders can just let the grunts do all the work.
After the battle, you can deal with captured enemies - execute'em, persuade'em to join your team or release'em - and implement and new items you might have picked up or been given access to now that you've leveled up after your brawl. Between fights, the team will explore towns, obtain items, rest up and build solider recruitment stations as they take the fight to the jerks who decided to call down the thunder..
Keep in mind this is all happening in the short time we played as Quinn. There are about 35 more characters to unlock and work your way up with.
That's a lot of RPG on your PSP.
Although the game could look better in certain departments, dialogue, quick load times and a solid story make Aedis Eclipse a game the RPG brethren should be watching closely as the game's April 25 release date approaches.

The PlayStation Portable remake of the original Final Fantasy isn't even out yet, but Square Enix is already sharing details on the remake of the sequel. Final Fantasy II will hit Japan on 6/7, the company revealed today, carrying a price point of 3,800 yen.
Like the remake of the original Final Fantasy, due out in Japan on 4/19, the remake of FFII features improved visuals and an extra dungeon, all made especially for the PSP. Square Enix has also been good enough to include the original content from past re-releases, including the opening movie from the PlayStation version and the extra scenario from the Game Boy Advance version.

According to Amazon UK the 20GB PS3 may be in the UK sooner than we thought. It's just appeared on the website with a release date of "30 Oct 2007".
SPOnG contacted Sony to see if the UK will, in fact, be getting any lower end PS3s before the end of the year. While not giving a definite 'no,' Sony's head of UK PR, David Wilson, said of the 20GB console "I haven't seen any. We don't have any here."

New magazine timed with European launch of the PlayStation 3 brings top quality games coverage to PS3 gamers for free.
Following the successful launch of free magazines for Xbox 360, PC games, and PSP and DS over the past six months, rapidly growing digital publisher, Cranberry Publishing Ltd, is pleased to announce the launch of P3Zine. The company has already established itself as an innovative magazine publisher within the videogames community and intends to emulate the success of its existing titles with P3Zine.
"Sony's next-gen console deserves a true next-gen magazine," says Editorial Director, Dan Hutchinson. "With the digital magazines we produce leading the world in terms of design, interactivity and popularity, the European launch of the PlayStation 3 is the natural time to launch P3Zine. The first issue is our biggest issue to date and contains 45 pages of multimedia enhanced professional games journalism."
The free PlayStation3 magazine contains videogames previews, reviews and features all written by professional games journalists. The first issue includes reviews of every PS3 launch game, including Resistance: Fall of Man, Motorstorm, Ridge Racer 7 and Call of Duty 3. It also has a top 20 most-wanted PS3 previews feature, as well as a report on the newly announced PlayStation Network.
As with other GamerZines, P3Zine is only published digitally, in PDF format. The pages are enhanced with games videos and animated screenshots as well as other types of interactivity. Readers can download the magazine for free and without registration directly from the GamerZines website.
Additionally, Cranberry Publishing Ltd is pleased to confirm that P3Zine will be published on a monthly schedule immediately from launch.
To coincide with the launch, the GamerZines site is running a special competition to give readers the chance to win a console for themselves and one for their friend when they recommend the magazine to other people.
Cranberry Publishing Ltd is an established UK limited company that specialises in publishing electronic magazines and brochures. In November 2006 it launched 360Zine (Xbox 360) and PCGZine (PC games) to universal acclaim. It followed these magazines with HGZine (Handheld GamerZine for PSP, DS and mobile phones) in February 2007. P3Zine is the fourth, monthly free videogames title from the GamerZines brand.

In addition to having an awkward appearance, Thrustmaster's Run'N' Drive gamepad may run (and/or drive) away with the dubious distinction of most awkward name and capitalization schema for a gaming product. Our fingers pause, apprehensively, every time we write a brand name, fearful of mangling some marketing team's carefully focus-grouped formatting. Occasionally, we remain obstinate and refuse to conform (we're looking at you PLAYSTATION 3 and SIXAXIS), but we're at a loss with the Run'N' Drive. So, instead of complaining about the name, we'll talk about the controller.
As luck would have it, the Run'N' Drive (RND from here on out) claims to be "7-axis" making it exactly one more axis than Sony's gamepad ... too bad SEVENAXIS isn't palindromic ... that would be sixaneves. We're not sure where that extra axis comes into play; you see, the RND "does not offer a motion sensor" on the PlayStation 3. What it does offer is compatibility with the PS3, PS2, and PC platforms (note: the RND "only supports PS3 games" on the PS3) as well as an optical wheel for "spot on precision."

European PlayStation 3 owners now have something they can tout over their Japanese and North American brethren. Though they did wait months longer for the console's release, it seems that they are privileged to an updated version of Gran Turismo HD Concept, and version 2.0 sports force feedback support for racing wheels.
But force feedback is last-gen, you say? Vibrating controllers of Sony's past have won Emmys, we say. Racing fans who are dedicated to the genre enough to buy a wheel peripheral deserve to have as immersive an experience as possible, even if it's just one race course. This bodes well for future releases (as well as the unknown known Sixaxis with rumble). As of this writing, the U.S. version is still 1.1, but we expect to get our rumble shortly.

In case you hadn't noticed, at 12.01am this morning, PlayStation 3 was finally launched in PAL territories around the world - places like France, Africa, New Zealand, and even our little island of England.
While - thankfully - it didn't trigger the sort of apocalypse-like drama of last year's American launch day madness, there are still more than enough quirky tales to fill your average news ticker. Or, in our creation below, a nice map.
Imagine we're slapping the tip of a lecturer's pointer onto the relevant geographical locations as you read for extra effect...
1 London, UK
Were you one of the 100 people who camped out in the Oxford Street Virgin Megastore for PS3's launch? If so, then well done. And Goddamn you.
Because each of the happy hundred early queue-sitters walked out with a grand's worth of HDTV, as a present from Sony for their "loyalty". They even got a free taxi ride home. The basta...
2 Swindon, UK
Things weren't quite so cheerful in Swindon, though. Well, less so than usual, at least. An unnamed woman there was attacked as she walked home with her newly purchased PlayStation 3.
Admirably, though, she held on to the console, forcing the muggers to abort the crime and scarper. Before being collared by the local Bobbies shortly after. It's not quite the same as "several hit in PS3 launch line drive by" though, is it?
3 Malta
PlayStation 3 sold out in Malta, and was the fasting-selling gaming brand in the country's history, with all 250 of the consoles sent to the small island snapped up almost immediately. Can Xbox 360 make the same boast?
4 Paris, France
Trendy Parisians could get their culture and their gaming in one place last night, as Sony bods in the French capital threw a PS3 launch event in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower.
There was a small irksome interruption though - by a huge riverboat chugging down the Seine with "Xbox 360 (heart) you" plastered across it. Oh, Microsoft, we love you too.
5 Everywhere, Italy
The Italians have the right idea - instead of waiting like obedient puppies for Sony to toss PlayStation 3 across to European gamers, stores in Italy began selling the next-gen consoles on Wednesday.
Small-scale retailer Darty first broke the barrier two days ago, before other stores hastily followed suit so as not to miss out. Sony is "deeply disappointed". We're just annoyed we don't live in Italy.
6 Sydney, Australia
Early adopters of PS3 got an early showing of Blu-ray's capabilities at Sydney's launch event, with Sony screening James Bond's latest cinema outing Casino Royale for the gamers stood in line. That's all 70 of them - compared with more than a 1,000 who queued up for Xbox 360's beachhead in Australia last year.
With other locations reporting similarly unimpressive gangs of customers, there can be only one answer. The Aussies are obviously displaying their disappointment with the choice of Daniel Craig for the role of England's greatest spy. Or, hang on...
7 Durban, South Africa
Pity the poor people who queued up outside Durban's branch of CNA. Not only was the Sony-sponsored launch party antics restricted to the cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg, but the retailer's PlayStation 3 order didn't even make it to the store, and the whole midnight launch thing was cancelled.
Still, at least the disappointed gamers could play on the many demo units stationed in shops around the city. Xbox 360 demo units, that is, since the PS3 ones haven't turned up yet.
8 Nowhere, India
Finally, spare a thought for Indian gamers. We might have had to wait two years since PS3 was announced, and four months since Sony launched the console in America and Japan, but India won't see the next generation of PlayStation until 27 April.
And as if that wasn't bad enough, it'll then cost a whopping £467, or 39,990 Indian Rupees. Count your blessings, readers...

Last month, a representative of developer Conspiracy Entertainment confirmed for GameSpot that its upcoming PlayStation Portable game Pocket Pool would feature the license of the Girls Gone Wild video series. Meanwhile, Eidos, the game's publisher, continued to issue press releases for the game with no mention of the attention-grabbing license.
This week the publisher said that contrary to the Conspiracy representative's assertion, Pocket Pool will not feature the Girls Gone Wild license.
"While I can confirm that the Girls Gone Wild license was in consideration for Pocket Pool, an agreement was not formally signed," an Eidos representative told GameSpot. "The coverage you have seen was premature."
Pocket Pool lets gamers rack 'em up against comely models to unlock video clips and image galleries. The game is rated M for Mature for sexual themes and partial nudity and is expected to be released next month.

The PlayStation 3 finally arrived in Europe last night, and there was a surprise in store for those buying a console at the official UK launch - a free 46" Sony Bravia television worth around GBP 2000.
The flagship Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street store opened its doors to the first customers keen to get their hands on PS3 at noon on Wednesday. Although only a handful turned up to spend the night in the store, by 11pm on Thursday the queue had grown to over 100 people.
With just 20 minutes to go until the console officially went on sale, Sony UK boss Ray Maguire stepped up to address the crowd in front of a large flatscreen TV.
"This is a 46-inch Bravia W series. It's an award-winning flat panel," he said. "And do you know what the good news, is guys? I'm going to give you one free."
The cheers were muted at first, but then the news began to sink in. When Maguire clarified, "Every single one of you in this queue is going to get one," the crowd responded with whoops and applause.
At midnight, the first PlayStation 3 was handed over to 17 year-old Ritatsu Thomas, who'd been waiting since 5am on Wednesday. He also received a Bravia TV to take home, but everyone else in the queue - 125 people in total - was told they'll receive their television next week.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz about the decision to give away the TVs, Maguire said, "PlayStation 3 is about the new generation of high definition. There are some people in that queue for whom the HD part is the more difficult part of the equation, and I think it's a way of just saying thank you.
"They've got the best console, and now they've got the best screen."
Maguire said he thought the launch had "gone great, considering that we weren't allowed to let people queue up outside and there were loads of restrictions".
"People waiting for 36 hours and sleeping overnight is absolutely unbelievable - it shows the affinity people have for the brand, and it's really humbling," he added.
Maguire's comments were echoed by Sony PR boss David Wilson, who told GamesIndustry.biz, "When retailers are going on record saying there's free stock, there's no point for any of these guys to come here and spend 36 on that floor down there - so I'm touched that so many have."

Any of you hoping to continue playing Pro Evolution Soccer 6 online using your shiny new PlayStation 3 will be disappointed to learn that the PS2 version can't do this yet.
Although Konami has confirmed that the single-player and versus modes in the PS2 game are compatible with PS3, it released a statement this afternoon saying that online play is incompatible.
The publisher blamed "alterations made to the console's hardware specifications" - certainly a reference to the loss of internal chips dedicated to PS2 emulation in the PS3 units manufactured for PAL regions.
Sony's backwards compatibility site currently lists PES6 as playing "with noticeable issues". Additional advice on playing PS2 games, posted along with the compatibility guide, notes that users should avoid the use of 60Hz and network modes "which may experience noticeable graphical corruption not present in the main game".
On the plus side, Konami said that it and Sony would let us know about changes "as soon as they occur", which suggests that they're not content to leave it at that. With no prospect of a PS3-specific PES game in the immediate future, we expect a solution is pretty high on Konami's agenda.
We imagine Sony's probably quite keen too, what with Xbox 360 having a version of its own.

The PlayStation 3's relatively high price in the UK is down to "the cost of living" as much as anything, according to Sony UK managing director Ray Maguire, who also suggested that negative coverage of the console had been "lazy". "The old adage of never let the truth get in the way of a good story is probably more prevalent than it has been before," he told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz.
Comparing the US and UK prices of the console (US$ 599 and GBP 425 respectively), Maguire told gi.biz that whereas the US was a "massive land with cheap people", the UK was "a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium, and the cost of people is a lot more".
"The cost of retail is vastly more in the UK than it is in the US and that's before you even stop to consider the US doesn't have VAT at RRP, they put a small amount on afterwards. Whereas, we get stung by 17.5 per cent. And pity the poor Irish and places like Sweden," he added.
"But we have to remember this is no different to selling a cup of Starbucks coffee or a McDonald's hamburger. This is the cost of living in the UK. It just becomes another barrier for us to get more product into the marketplace because the price needs to be set higher to get from our factory to the consumer."
Asked why Sony opted for the slightly peculiar price point of GBP 425 rather than rounding down past the psychological 400 barrier and going for GBP 399, Maguire said: "We did consider GBP 429, but we wanted to get the best for the consumer."
Moving swiftly on, Sony's UK MD admitted that it hasn't been "smooth sailing" for the company. "Nowadays, with how the media works, not only does information fly around at the speed of light, so does mis-information," he argued. "With blogs on the increase, people's thought processes are transferred from one place to another and picked up by people who might be lazy when it comes to finding out whether something is true or not. The old adage of never let the truth get in the way of a good story is probably more prevalent than it has been before.
"You also have to remember that we're one of the most cynical nations on the planet and even if you're telling people the absolute truth they doubt whether that information is real or not. This is the world that we sit in and we have to accept it and make the best of it."

Those of you wondering where the rather splendid GripShift was on the PlayStation Network launch list will be pleased to learn that it turned up after all.
New Zealand (good country) based developer Sidhe sent word that the game is available to buy through the PlayStation Store in Europe and Australia, for a frankly brilliant introductory price of EUR 7.99.
GripShift - once an underrated PSP game - really comes into its own on PS3 thanks to a range of instantly-accessible online leaderboards that inject real competition into every track. A mixture of racing, puzzling and platforming, it's moreish to the point of being slightly debilitating.

It's here! The PlayStation 3 has finally gone on sale on the UK and we've got footage of the first guy in the queue (fumbling through his wallet trying to find a card that would work) shelling out to be part of Sony's next-gen.
PlayStation 3 has just gone on sale in the UK, at Virgin Megastore on Oxford Road. Sony Studios boss Phil Harrison was at the store overseeing operation PS3, as was ex-Sony Europe boss Chris Deering.
But compared to the recent Wii launch last November, the turnout was a bit low key. That's mainly down to the fact that there are plenty of units in stock up and down the country. You should be able to walk straight into a store tomorrow and pick one up without a pre-order or excuse as to why you took a day off work to stand in line. Of course the turnout may also be down to the £425 price tag.
Just over 100 gamers were allowed inside Virgin Megastore to be the first in the UK to buy the machine. But Sony made the 24-hour queuing process worth every bladder-bruising second. The first 100 or so in line were given a free 46" HD TV for their efforts in bladder control. If we'd known this was going to happen, we'd have been in that queue since Wednesday afternoon too.
As midnight neared, an announcer told the gathering mass that they would get their free telly in the post, presumably so they wouldn't have to walk around the centre of London with 'rob me' written all over them. A 46" HD TV is also too big to carry alongside a big bag of PS3. It took two Virgin staffers to carry one out to a waiting taxi.
The UK launch of the PS3 was, for one short moment, in danger of being delayed yet again. Ritatsu Thomas, 17 from Mitcham, was the first person in the queue and the world watched as he had to rifle through his wallet to find a card that actually worked - it looked like the first few he tried crumbled under the £425 weight of his decision. But he got there in the end and you can see his reaction in the movie on your right.
Virgin's promo boss was pleased with how it all went though, saying, "Last night's Sony PS3 launch at Virgin Megastores flagship store on Oxford Street exceeded all expectations. We staged a retail first by allowing eager gaming fans the chance to camp overnight in the basement of the store, to make sure they were in prime position to get their hands on the console. The event culminated with Sony being very generous by giving away 46 inch Sony Bravia TVs to the first 125 the queue."
Stay tuned for more on the PS3 launch over the coming week.

Earlier this week Disney revealed its plans to bring a new Pirates of the Caribbean game to all formats, and now we have a gameplay trailer than shows off some surprisingly sweet-looking environments.
Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End will be based on both the latest film of the same name and the previous film, Dead Man's Chest.
The action looks pretty, so if the fighting is as "innovative" and intuitive as Disney say, this could be a decent movie-licence romp.
We'll see when it hits shelves in May in US. A UK release is expected soon after.

Perhaps expectedly auction site salesman have got rather presumptuous with their eBay prices after the PS3 launch in Europe, marking up consoles to as much as £600 on the site.
Thankfully, it looks like there's no-one out their silly enough or in a remote-enough Welsh village to have to pay for the eBay seller's prices. Though things could certainly change after the consumer troops clean up the last wave of PS3s left in the shops this morning.
The highest actual bid we've encountered thus far has beenthis PS3 auction where one lucky bidder is currently offering a £499 price tag on a PS3 and one game.
To be honest though that isn't too far off what three members of the CVG team paid this morning when we walked into HMV and Virgin and got a PS3 each without a pre-order.
Looking further through the listings there's also a handful of bargains to be had; if you're quick enough there are a number of PS3s and games up for grabs for under RRP, though no-one's offering £146 worth of beer.
We expect the true eBay consensus to emerge after the weekend shopping spree - so stay tuned for more auction fun. It's safe to say that there's none of the nonsense we saw at Wii, 360 and US PS3 launches to been seen though.

It turns out that sending us £146 worth of beer yesterday (it's still cold) wasn't the end of Microsoft's PS3 launch-thwarting plans, as the company lead a continent-wide assault on Sony's console launch by land, sea and... well we suppose the beer had to be air-freighted over at some point.
The first bit of mischief from the Xbox 360 house went down at the Midnight PS3 launch in Paris, where a big Xbox 360-branded boat sailed passed queuing punters with the message "Xbox 360 heart you". We don't know what it means either, but we're sure the cold French punters got the message.
An hour later (thanks to the wonders of time zones) more naughty pranksters descended on the official London launch event at Virgin Megastore Oxford Street. As you can imagine the chilly London weather isn't ideal for a street campout, but luckily some friendly chaps were on hand giving out free camping chairs.
Further investigation revealed the chairs were branded with the message "Shouldn't have kept you waiting" and the internet URL www.shkyw.org. We'll let you check that site out yourself to discover who the mischievous do-gooders really were.
