Where's the best place to purchase a PlayStation 3? Hong Kong, according to the Wall Street Journal. No prizes for guessing the worst: London.
In Hong Kong, the PS3 retails for an average price of HKD3,780 - or €363. In London, the local price is £425 - or €627. In short, Brits have to pay almost twice as much for the next-gen games console than Hong Kong residents too.
Blame taxes, Sony says. But even with VAT (17.5 per cent) and UK import duty (10 per cent) it's hard to see the PS3 coming in at more than €470, and that's assuming the Hong Kong price is tax, duty and retailer margin free.
It doesn't look good. Most of continental Europe pays €599 or €600 for a PS3, New Yorkers pay $650 (€328) and Tokyo buyers cough up ¥59,980 (€381).
If Britain had dropped Sterling for the Euro, UK buyers would probably be paying the equivalent of €27 less. That said, the Irish have to cough up more than their fellow Euro-philes, so price parity isn't guaranteed.

A year after release of the popular DJ simulation game, Pentavision does thousands of fans a big favor and releases its successor. Once again, the game resembles Konami's popular beatmania series: You take the position as DJ and are challenged to hit the correct button(s) on your PSP™ handheld at the right time to complete the song.
DJ Max Portable 2 introduces one more gameplay mode and offers a song selection of more than 60 tunes. In the new Fever Mode, you fill up your Fever ability which, when activated, speeds up the notes and applies a 2x score multiplier. By filling up yet another Fever, you can activate it again for a 3x multiplier, so on and so forth.
The game supports various difficulty modes, a language selection (to switch between Korean, English and Japanese), 4, 5, 6 and 8-button modes, a network mode and lots more.
Just like its predecessor, the soundtrack collection is stored on the UMD. You can play back and listen to the soundtrack without playing the game. The game also contains a DJ Max Portable (1) connectivity mode, which allows you to play old songs on DJ Max 2.
Pentavision's rhythm action game DJ Max Portable 2 has been released in Korea today and is available at Play-Asia at US$ 49.90 only. We expected the game to be in stock today, but for some reason, only the Metallic Silver Limited Edition has turned up today. Another shipment has been dispatched from Korea today and we will post an update tomorrow about the shipping situation.
The game is also available in two Limited Edition flavors, the Orpheus Package ~Metallic Silver~ and Orpheus Package ~Night Black~ as long as supplies last at revised cost of US$ 169.90.
Content of the massive Orpheus Package Limited Editions:
DJ Max Portable 2
DJ Max Portable 2 Orpheus Box
DJ Max Portable 2 Audio Trinity (3CD)
DJ Max Portable 2 Visual Artbook (64 pages)
DJ Max Portable 2 Jigsaw Puzzle (500 pieces)
DJ Max Portable 2 Visual Postcard Set (16 pieces)
Please note that only the Metallic Silver edition set has reached us today, while we are expecting the Night Black version and hopefully also the game only edition to be in stock tomorrow.

Nothing quite like selling out for a big Arsenal game only to watch it on your PSP. Heck, nothing quite like selling out for a PSP! Sony has developed a system called S.PORT (requisite ALL CAPS — love it!) that will let fans watch the game at the stadium on *get this* their PSP. It's still in the prototype phase, but the system will let you see replay, status and scores via the wireless hook-up. Says Sony's Eric Siereveld:
It could be used at any stadium around the UK, or even a golf match where it is sometimes hard to see the ball flying through the air.
A trial period with 4,000 Arsenal fans should commence shortly, and the product is expected to launch by the end of the year.

While I've certainly not herd anything official from NIS America, IGN seems to think that the hotly anticipated PSP version of Disgaea will be getting a US release this August, as indicated in a hands-on posted this morning by Jeff Haynes over at IGN PSP. While he doesn't mention where and how he got his hands on the title, I'm assumming it was at the NIS America press party last night which unvieled several new titles coming this year from the Japanese RPG publiishers.
Though I would have been happy with a straight port, NIS has gone all out, adding in a new Etna-focused story, multiplayer battles, and customizaion options out the wazoo- custom maps, custom soundtracks, etc.

While Los Santos, San Fierro, Las Venturas, Vice City and the original Liberty City were decent approximations of iconic American cities, the debut GTA IV video hints at an incredible level of realism for the PS3 and Xbox 360 iteration - not just in terms of the buildings but also their geographical positioning and sense of scale.
New York will still be referred to as fictional Liberty City but it seems feasible from close examination of the trailer that an aerial view of the environs will match the authentic Google Maps version far closer than the one seen in GTA 3. In many ways it's approaching the whole city thing in the same manner as The Getaway did for London.
What does this mean for the gameplay? Everything points to a less cartoonified visual style and a more mature subject matter with the Eastern European character mentioning people smuggling as one of his past crimes. Then there's the austere orchestral music, a far cry from the funk and hip hop of San Andreas and the 80s ballads of Vice City. Could this be suggestive of a major change? To look at it another way: are we looking at the first 'serious' GTA?

Unless you've been hiding under a rock for the past six months, you'll have no doubt heard about Sony's delay in getting the PlayStation 3 to the UK. However, on March 23 2007, the console finally hit the British Isles and the rest of the continent, selling 165,000 units within two days.
Around 125 of these were sold at Sony's official launch event, which was held at Virgin Megastores on London's Oxford Street. To sweeten the deal, everyone who bought a console at the launch was rewarded with a 46-inch Sony Bravia LCD TV, as well as a free copy of Resistance: Fall of Man and a taxi home. With all these freebies sending the crowd into a fit of apoplexy, GameSpot calmed down for a quiet word at the launch with Sony UK's marketing director, Alan Duncan

Rockstar's lips were tightly sealed this morning, following last night's debut trailer for Grand Theft Auto IV.
When we asked it about rumours that the PS3 version would contain more content than its Xbox 360 counterpart, the publisher informed us it couldn't say anything at all about the title, declining to reveal any further information than was presented in last night's footage.
Grand Theft Auto IV will be set in New York, and looks to follow an eastern European man, possibly Russian.
"Life is complicated," he says in the trailer, walking over the Brooklyn Bridge into Manhattan. "Perhaps here things will be different."

Grand Theft Auto games. Torn down off shop shelves by the fan mob hungry for the hugely successful franchise, package ripped open, disc stuck in console and a slice of Rockstar genius enjoyed. But is it like buying meat from the supermarket where you get it all nicely wrapped up and fresh while you're oblivious of the mess back at the slaughterhouse?
A Wired.com article titled 'The Road to Ruin: How Grand Theft Auto Hit the Skids' has taken an interesting look at the history of Rockstar, from its foundation to current day and investigating the controversy that's surrounded the developer and its parent company Take-Two over the last 15 or so years.
While a good portion of the article focuses on the birth of Rockstar, there's some fascinating details buried within. One former Rockstar employee describes the developer's attempt to shrug off 2005's infamous Hot Coffee incident from San Andreas as a hacker act as "bullshit".
In fact, the former employee said he was well aware of the existence of Hot Coffee in the game before it was discovered. "They released that bullshit quote about how this is the act of hackers, which is completely comical", they said.
Corey Wade, a former Rockstar senior product manager, described the blame on hackers as "a colossal PR screwup".
The article also takes an in-depth look at the lawsuits that have plagued Rockstar, as well as the investigation into Rockstar parent company Take-Two by the Securities and Exchange Commission and the following charges of "shady accounting and backdated stock options" levelled at the company.
It describes how on June 9, 2005, a press statement was issued informing of "Take-Two's $7.5 million penalty as a result of the SEC investigation". According to an ex member of the Rockstar PR team, Terry Donovan, one of the Rockstar co-founders along with Dan and Sam Houser, declared, "Don't answer your phones! This is going to get ugly."
Terry Donovan departed Rockstar earlier this year. Rockstar co-founder Jamie King, described as "Sam Houser's right-hand man" has also gone.
And in October 2006, co-founder and once CEO of Take-Two Ryan Brant resigned, Wired.com saying that four months later "he pleaded guilty to falsifying business records and agreed to pay more than $7 million in penalties, bringing his lifetime Take-Two hit to almost $11 million."
Recently, Take-Two has hit the headlines with talks of a possible buyout of the publisher; and today it's been announced that Take-Two's board of directors has been replaced and that CEO Paul Eibeler has departed as shareholder attempts to introduce huge changes have proved successful.
And this is just as Rockstar gives the gaming world its first glimpse of Grand Theft Auto IV

March 30th, 2007, 16:55 Posted By: wraggster
The man responsible for the visual design of all Sony's PlayStation consoles, Teiyu Goto, has revealed the story behind that boomerang-shaped controller which was mocked by the world and his dog at E3 in 2005. You couldn't escape the comedy jpegs of batman holding the pad either.
"President Kutaragi wanted something different for the controller," Goto told Official PlayStation Magazine. "Quite frankly, we had set aside the ergonomic aspect in favour of the image it conjured up. We wanted to present an avant-garde model for the show, running a risk of being criticised."
It's safe to say that the criticism quickly followed. When asked about his personal thoughts on the controller and if he liked it, Goto replied, "It was very futuristic visually, but practically speaking you only had to hold it to realise how it compared to the Dual Shock 2. You know there are so many players who are used to the PlayStation controller; it's like a car steering wheel and it's not easy to change people's habits."
But the design was dropped and the Sony reverted back to the Dual Shock 2 model, which eventually became SixAxis. "The desire for change for there, but the legacy of the PlayStation was stronger - the slightest change to the controller could annoy players and the risk wasn't worth taking. Also PS2 and PS3 provide backwards compatibility; the ergonomics should be the same when you play games from the previous generation but without having to bring out the 'wired' controllers. It is for these reasons that we reverted to the shape of the classic controller."
You can read the full interview in Issue 005 of Official PlayStation Magazine, on sale now.

R10 Countdown
I'm in the process of tidying up my current build so that I can release R10 over the next few days.
There are a number of features/optimisations still on my TODO list, but as I promised last month, I'd like to release R10 by the end of March. I think frequent, small updates are better than keeping everyone waiting months between releases.
Although R10 will be a smaller update than R9, there are some great improvements (most of which I've already talked about):
An approximate 10-15% speedup
Frameskip, framerate limiting and stick deadzone tuning
Various small bugfixes
I'm hoping to have everything ready by Sunday afternoon at the latest.
One feature which might not make it is the Expansion Pak support. I mentioned that I'd finally fixed the bug that was preventing this from working, but I've been having difficulty resolving the various memory issues that it causes when enabled. Rather than delay R10, I'd prefer to disable the Expansion Pak support for now and release R11 early - as soon as I've fixed the underlying problem. I'll keep you posted.

American gamers haven't enjoyed an update since Wipeout, and European gamers don't have any PS1 games available on the PLAYSTATION Store yet. That hasn't stopped Sony from updating their archive of PS1 titles in Japan. The newest update brings 5 more games, bringing the total number of downloadable titles to 36:
- Gunners Heaven (SCEJ)
- Galaxy Fight (Sun Denshi)
- Hard Edge (Sun Denshi)
- Arcade Hits Raiden (Hamster)
- Tall Unlimited (Hamster)
As usual, PSP owners must have a PS3 in order to access the PLAYSTATION Store. When Sony will choose to fix this flaw?

IGN is continuing their PSP retrospective feature by speaking with even more developers. They approached EA's Team Fusion, one of the most prolific PSP developers out there. What's the one feature of PSP they'd like to use more often? PSP fans will agree with their answer: "For my own team, I think there's a lot of value in further exploring game sharing and downloadable demos for the PSP. We recently released EA's first ever downloadable demo for the PSP in Europe (Medal of Honor Heroes) and the response has been really positive. It's an excellent game and the demo allows new users to try it out and experience a taste for themselves."
Namco's Tekken team was also interviewed. They'd love to see Sony make a true system-defining game for PSP: "If Sony could take the lead by creating a defining, exceptional PSP game, I believe that it would become easier for all developers to create new titles. It would also be desirable if SCE's processes were the same worldwide so that it would be easier to execute simultaneous releases."

Before we even get into the awesome list about what Phil Harrison spoke about, we have to quote the original article's opening sentence because it's so inspiring: "PS3 may have cemented its place in history as the most successful home console launch ever in the UK, but Sony World Wide Studios boss Phil Harrison says that there has never been a product launch like it in any sector." Bragging rights, anyone? No? Too selfish and rude? Okay, well, still. Fantastic.
Harrison's statements can be split into three long quotes, which we'll summarize below because we know you've got other stuff to get done. Right?
- 165,000 units sold, equating to £100 million worth of business over the course of 2 days. He said: "This not only makes it the most successful games hardware launch, we think it is the most successful consumer launch of a product in the UK."
- Sony is dumbfounded by their own success: "We have been in the office scratching our heads trying to think of a consumer product that has achieved that level of consumer sales in such a short period of time. If anyone can think of a UK product launch that has raised this amount of business in such a short period of time I'd love to know because we can't think of one."
- Out-of-stock? Paychecks coming in? Says the Phil: "We are already seeing across Europe out of stock situations where retailers re re-ordering. It was always our strategy to have a good supply. There's never been a launch of a console in Europe that's had a million pieces of hardware sold in or available. We've kept some back in order to continue to supply the market."
Good stuff, Phil Harrison. What do you guys think? Was the launch a failure, or was the media quick to hop back onto the Sony-hate wagon and cover the failure of launch events and not the actual sales numbers/data/facts?

Yes, you read the subject line correctly: France. The place where everyone claims the PlayStation 3 launch was a complete and utter disaster. While the launch events may have been a disaster, it's important to be able to separate those from the actual console performance upon launch. In that respect, France gave the PS3 a very, very nice welcome.
Despite the reports of the PS3 selling 600,000 units across Europe in two days, one cannot help but speculate what each region sold in a similar period. According to George Fornay, prez of SCEF (F for France, silly), said that the number of units sold in France over a two day period totalled to 78,000. He expects the 100,000 mark to be passed by the end of this coming weekend. This number trumps the 360 and Wii launches for France, even the PS2 only sold a bit over 60,000 units. Awesome! Keep it going, Sony!

When it was released in 2002, Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly was panned by critics who accused it of offering a choppy frame rate, buggy gameplay, lengthy load times, and a dull story. Last month, the game received a more serious knock against it, as a New York woman whose infant suffered a grand mal seizure while playing Enter the Dragonfly filed suit against Vivendi Games, Sierra Entertainment, Sony Computer Entertainment America, and a defunct rental store called Hiawatha Video.
The suit, filed in New York State Supreme Court, claims that the defendants were "negligent, careless, and reckless with regard to the design and manufacture" of Spyro, such that the game was dangerous when used in the intended manner, and that they failed to properly warn consumers of that danger. According to the suit, the child suffered severe and permanent disabling injuries that will affect him "in all activities of daily living" and necessitate lifelong medical expenses.
The PS2 edition of Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly came with a notice on the inside front cover of the instruction manual advising consumers that "a very small percentage of individuals may experience epileptic seizures when exposed to certain light patterns or flashing lights." The notice also tells users to stop playing immediately if they experience specific symptoms of epilepsy, and to consult a physician before resuming play.
On behalf of her child, the woman is seeking damages "for such fair and reasonable amount as may be awarded by a jury of his peers," along with whatever other relief the court may deem just and proper. Earlier this week, Sony requested that the woman specify the total amount of damages she's seeking.
As of press time, neither Vivendi nor Sony representatives had returned GameSpot's request for comment.
This is not the first time a gamemaker has faced a lawsuit over epileptic seizures. In August of 2003, Nintendo won a case in Louisiana against a woman whose son died as the result of a seizure he suffered while playing the Nintendo 64. The judge in that case ruled in Nintendo's favor after the woman failed to respond to the publisher's motion for summary judgment.

Unfortunately us Europeans will have to sit and watch from the sidelines as US and Japanese gamers enjoy a demo for Ninja Gaiden Sigma next month.
You see, Sony Europe still has no idea when we can expect PS3 taster or full game here, telling Eurogamer this afternoon that it was still waiting for information.
Meanwhile Famitsu has announced the demo will be released across North America and Japan on 27th April, ahead of the title's scheduled launch in June.
It is rumoured to include a specially created chapter that won't be in the full game, which will give you access to many of the game's weapons early on.
Ninja Gaiden Sigma is the PlayStation 3 version of the popular shuriken-slinging game for Xbox, Ninja Gaiden: Black. Creator Tecmo recently shouted at the Internet insisting that it was much more than a port.
Apparently the whole package has had an overhaul, from graphics and performance, to content and bouncy boobs.

Metal Gear Solid fans will no doubt be pleased to hear that David Hayter will once again be providing Solid Snake's dulcet tones, brought on board for PS3's Metal Gear Solid 4.
Voicing the aging and exhausted hero in the sequel, Hayter will be following a script penned by Hideo Kojima and Shuyo Murata.
Konami has also announced that voice actors Quinton Flynn, Paul Eiding and Christopher Randolph are returning, lending their vocal talents to characters Raiden, Roy Campbell and Hal 'Otacon' Emmerich, respectively.
And completing the reforming of the 'Metal Gear Solid Family Voice' is Kris Zimmerman, who is to direct the voice acting sessions for the game.
"I couldn't be more excited about this game. What I've seen of Metal Gear Solid 4 has absolutely blown me away. To bring the focus of the story back to Solid Snake, and to work with Kris Zimmerman and many of the amazing actors that provided iconic voices for the previous games, is like coming home," said David Hayter.
"I'm so proud and grateful to have been involved with Mr. Kojima on this legendary video game series for nearly a decade. This game is going to plunge players into the ultimate Metal Gear Solid experience. And personally, I can't wait to play it."
