New from redkawa:
This release in meant for PSP users with firmware version 3.30 ONLY. If you have not updated your PSP after March 28, 2007, you do not have firmware 3.30 and this beta version will be USELESS to you. If you have an older firmware version, please continue to use PSP Video 9 version 1.94. You can download PSP Video 9 version 1.94 here.
This is a very EARLY beta of the next version of PSP Video 9. It is so early we haven’t even added or tested profiles for the existing codecs and settings that have worked on the PSP prior to firmware 3.30. This version has only 2 profiles, one to convert to 480x272 and the other to convert to 720x480.
Some parts of the GUI have changed so don’t expect it to look completely like the old version of PSP Video 9. To get to the familiar convert video section, hit the “Convert” button in the top menu and then click on the “Current Conversions” tab.
Once your video is converted, you must manually copy it from your computer (by default it will be in your C:\Documents and Settings\<username>\My Documents\Converted Videos\PSP\MPEG4-AVC directory for XP) to your PSP memory stick. You must place the video in the root “Video” Folder (X:\VIDEO) for it to show up in the PSP XMB.
For currently unknown reasons, the PSP will show your 480x272 converted videos all squished initially. Change the screen mode in the display settings (Hit Triangle while the video is playing) to “Full Screen” to view the video in its proper 480x272 native resolution. We are looking into why this is occurring.

Codemasters' upcoming installment in the long-running and exceedingly popular Colin McRae series isn't just the best-looking rally game we've seen; it's one of the best-looking next generation titles, period. This week we've been lucky enough to go hands-on with Colin McRae: DIRT and were immediately blown away by the impressive visuals, superb handling and high-speed rally racing. Clearly Codemasters has had its best development team locked up in a garage for several years with only programming tools for company, if the impressive results we've seen so far are anything to go by.
For those that haven't been following the progress of DIRT - more fool you - it's the latest rally game featuring Scotland's favourite off-road racer. After successful appearances on previous generation consoles, Codemasters has invested plenty of time and effort into this latest iteration, even building its own game engine (called Neon) especially for DIRT. It's also the first Colin McRae to feature Hill Climb events and Rally Raid competitions. So far, so good... but we were interested to see if DIRT could live up to our high expectations

Months ago, From Software and Ubisoft delivered the Xbox 360's first traditional turn-based RPG. With random battles, plot driven exploration and loads of cinema driven special battles, the arrival of Enchanted Arms was a good addition for the genre on Microsoft's system, which only had Final Fantasy and the epic Oblivion for fans to experience. Now, months later, Enchanted Arms is making its way to the PS3, marking the first turn-based RPG on Sony's Cell-driven system. However, much more than a basic port of the game, the PS3 version has received a number of subtle gameplay enhancements to take advantage of the Sixaxis controller.
The story of Enchanted Arms is set after the events of the Golem War, a devastating conflict that shattered civilization and pitted humanity against their doll-like creations known as golems. Initially, the golems were designed to help humans accomplish their goals and tasks, but after the arrival of super-powerful automatons known as Devil Golems, the creatures turned against their masters and almost devastated the world. Humans were only able to defeat the dolls with the help of powerful magic, imprisoning the Devil Golems and slowly restoring control over the remaining beasts. Unfortunately, most of the magical powers humans possessed became lost to time, leaving the survivors to rebuild their lives and their towns. The lone art remaining to humans is the ability to become enchanters, using specialized abilities which they go to established academies to learn.
Meet Atsuma, the dimwitted hero of Enchanted Arms.Players take on the role of Atsuma, a less than stellar pupil at the Yokohama City Enchanters academy. Actually, he's more of a campus wide joke, known more for sleeping in class than using his brain for anything. But the reason why he hasn't been kicked out of the academy is because of his right arm, which somehow has the power to nullify the effects of any enchantment. One day, when he and his friends are skipping class to attend a festival in the city, a massive earthquake levels sections of the city. However, even worse, the golems scattered around the city snapped and started attacking any human in sight. After fighting their way through various golems to the ruins of the academy, they discover the resurrected form of a Devil Golem, which promptly kicks off all kinds of problems.
Like most RPGs, battle plays a significant role within the game. Enchanted Arms uses a turn-based system that sets the player's party and their opponents up on 4x3 grids that defines their movement and attacking range. During every turn, a character can move and choose to either standby and regain their strength or select an item or skill. Many of these abilities have specialized attributes, which can imbue various elemental effects on the target, which helps build up a combo and EX meter. The combo meter lets multiple party members increase their damage on a single target, while the EX meter allows a character to attack every single enemy on screen. Unleashing your strongest attacks takes a large amount of power from your characters, but helps defeat your opponents faster. There are two separate incentives to using these abilities. The first is because your party members regenerate their energy in each battle, so you can go all out and not worry about being unprepared for the next fight. The other reason is because the faster you defeat enemies the more you maintain your Vitality points, which helps govern the health of everyone in the field at the start of a battle.
Welcome to the grid...You'll be fighting quite a bit on this field. While a majority of the game features appears to be rather similar to that of the 360, it's unclear if the online features, such as allowing you to post your high scores in casino games or participating in golem battles against other players on the PlayStation Network, will be included in the game. However, a number of gameplay features have been augmented to take advantage of the motion sensitivity of the Sixaxis controller. For instance, whenever players trigger the EX meter during battle, players have the ability to add additional power by shaking the controller before time runs out, adding a faster, frenetic pacing to the battle sequence. Similarly, you can recover expended EX meter energy by performing the Enchant Dance, shaking the controller back and forth as Atsuma dances in a spatial vacuum. Other uses that we've noticed were shaking the controller to extend Atsuma's Enchant Wire, allowing him to cover vast distances, as well as certain mini-games, like a pizza eating contest.

Healthy opening weekend software sales boost record breaking launch.
Just as it revealed that Resistance: Fall of Man and MotorStorm had swept into the top two spots in the all formats listings this week, ChartTrack also confirmed that overall, PS3 games were sold at a software-to-hardware ratio of 1.65.
Considering the price of the console, this represents a significant success for platform holder Sony, although its predecessor PS2 boasted an opening weekend attach rate ratio of 1.67.
The high volume of software sales meant that the new Sony format put in an impressive showing in its debut week at European retail. Six new PS3 games entered the top ten, with 13 in total across the all formats top 40. Five of the 13 were also PS3 exclusives.

Michael Fahey from Kotaku has lost his mind. In a consumerist rage, he went out and bought both the DS and PSP versions of Puzzle Quest. Luckily, his insanity proves to have a use, since he's able to compare the two versions. Which system came out of the bloody cage match a winner? Lucky for PSP owners, Puzzle Quest is best on Sony's portable. Better graphics, better sound and better AI make the PSP version the clear choice to buy if you have both systems. On the downside, they mention that the PSP Puzzle Quest has load times, but anyone who plays PSP (or any disc based system) should be used to that by now.

The PS3 -- it helps researchers learn more about various diseases with the aid of Folding@Home. It helps us feel good about ourselves (and impress our science-addicted friends), knowing we're making some kind of difference, despite how marginal it may or may not be. What hasn't been talked about on this site yet, specifically, is the cost this really does inflict on you, the selfless consumer/pseudo-researcher. IGN wrote up an article about exactly that.
IGN used the estimated 200W usage for the Folding@Home program and compared them to electricity rates from December of 2006. They used a chart, but we'll let you look at it. We'll tell you the cheapest and most expensive state to run the program in (and my state, since I'm selfish).
The cheapest state to run Folding@Home is Idaho, at 4.78 cents per kW hour -- running the program for a month straight nets you a bill of $6.88. The most expensive is Hawaii at 19.28 cents per kW hour ($27.76 for a straight month). Georgia? Near the middle -- 7.31 cents per kW hour ($10.53/month).
We're not trying to dissuade you from running the program! That's for running the thing an entire month straight. We don't know if a PS3 could actually handle that (if I had an extra $500, I'd do a huge piece on it with a webcam 24/7 to show you it's always on, but nah). It's safe to assume that cutting the monthly price in half will be what to expect from running your PS3 -- gaming included.

While Sony may boast that over 1,000 PS2 games work on the modified European PS3, statistics don't matter much if your favorite game doesn't work correctly. Case in point, an editorial in Italy's Corriere Della Sera with the translated headline "Yesterday I bought a PS3. Today, I'm selling it." Apparently, at least one journalist is so mad about the PS3's lack of full support for Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer series (Eurogamer points out that the online matches don't work) that he is willing to sell the system at a discount just days after buying it.
He's not alone, either. An Italian consumer association is reportedly demanding that Sony address the compatibility issues or offer PS3 owners a free game. Hell hath no fury like an Italian footie fan scorned.

Datel has revealed a slew of new PS3 peripherals today, perfect for anyone who wants to buy something for the console yet can't find a game they haven't already played. Many of these items are already available on the market, but these are made specifically for the PS3, meaning they are somehow better!
Take the Powerboard, for instance. It's a USB keyboard, just like the twenty or so USB keyboards I have stacked up in my closet, though for some odd reason they chose to advertise theirs with a random half-naked woman.
Then there's the Max Drive160, which is an external 160gb hard disk in a USB enclosure for only $169. Sure you could cobble something together on your own for much cheaper (Pricewatch has a 250GB hard disk listed for $60, for instance), but then it wouldn't say "For PS3" on the package, unless you made a little sticker or something.
Along with the two previously mentioned items come a Wi-Fi dongle for your PC, a PS2 memory card transfer device that handles all sizes of cards, an HD component cable, and two headsets, one wired, one bluetooth.

UK PS3 owners may have noticed that downloadable PSone games (for use on PSP) are currently unavailable on the UK store.
Sony has yet to make an official comment on when the first PSone games will become available to PAL gamers, but GamesRadar has today been assured by a SCE UK representative that they are 'on their way', hinting at a rough timetable of a month.
While we're a bit disappointed we couldn't test out the feature on day one, in fairness, US gamers had to wait a similar period before the first wave of titles hit their store.
Whether the software line-up will match that of the US store, including titles like Tekken 2, Cool Boarders and Crash Bandicoot is also yet to be decided, but we're half expecting a few new additions for the Euro launch.
In order to download and play the games when they're released you'll need a PSP and at least a 512Mb Memory Stick - although we'd recommend a 2Gb one as each of the PSone downloads clocks in at around the 400Mb mark.

Those of you entitled to a free copy of Casino Royale on Blu-ray will receive an email next week confirming that one will be heading your way, Sony told Eurogamer this afternoon, finally putting an end to confusion surrounding the giveaway.
"An email will go out at some point next week telling people if they have been successful or not with regards to registering on the [PlayStation] network for their copy of a Casino Royale Blu-ray disc," a spokesperson for Sony UK told us. "Depending on the release date in each particular country the disc will be sent out accordingly."
The offer promised that the first 500,000 people to register their PlayStation 3 on the PlayStation Network would receive a copy of James Bond film Casion Royale on Blu-ray. Something to show off the capabilities of the new format, you might say.
However, when we registered our consoles on the network we received no confirmation of such a disc making its way to us, nor could we find any advertising on the PlayStation site to suggest the offer was still going ahead.
Still, Sony seems to have cleared it all up, and recently announced you'd have to wait up to 45 days after the film is released in your territory before you can expect to receive your present.
However, that doesn't appear to have stopped people flocking to buy the console, as Sony revealed this afternoon that more than 600,000 units have been sold across Europe. An estimated 165,000 of these were sold in the UK alone, after having been on sale for just two days.

Yosuke Hayashi, director of Ninja Gaiden Sigma which is due out on PS3 later this year, has said that developers claiming that PS3 is hard to develop for is just an "excuse to the consumer".
"For us it's not a question of being easy to develop for, that's a relative term," Yosuke told gamepro.com.
"When we first got our hands on the hardware it took us a while to get back into the flow of working with Sony, because they way they do things is a little different," he explained.
"The developers that say it's too hard to develop for and complain about it are missing the point. It sounds like an excuse to the consumer to us.
"If you're going to do a project you have to do the best you can. It's like if you bought a CD and it sounded bad and the singer said it was because the studio and the engineer were no good. Ultimately it's up to that person to make sure they have the quality that's needed," he said.
Speaking proudly of Ninja Gaiden Sigma, he added: "Look at what were able to do and the quality we are able to achieve and that speaks for itself. I think people will be satisfied with what we were able to do. If we can do it then other people will be able to do it as well."
He makes a solid point. Have you seen the latest Sigma screens? The game looks stunning. More like this please, PS3 developers.

We're already tucking into the PS3 version, which is brilliant by the way, and the PSP version is looking pretty sweet on the small screen, too.
These new screens are of the wacky mini games, which will have you playing tennis variations of ten-pin bowling, training your accuracy with target-hitting games and dodging giant tennis balls of death.
Virtua Tennis 3 is out now on Xbox 360 and PS3, while PSP and PC versions will go on sale this Friday.
