Sony Australia has announced that more than 20,000 PlayStation 3 units have been sold in the territory since the console launched there on Friday.
According to TheAge.com, Sony also said that combined sales of hardware, software and accessories generated over AUD 25 million (GBP 10.3 million / EUR 15.2 million / USD 20.2 million) in retail spending.
The PS3 retails in Australia with an RRP of AUD 999.95. With 20,000 consoles sold, that would mean AUD 5 million has been spent on software and accessories. First-party games are priced at AUD 99.95.
Xbox 360 launched in the region exactly one year before PS3, on March 23 2006. According to market analyst GfK, 30,421 units were sold in the first four days following launch - making it the fastest-selling console then released. A further 700,000 Xbox 360 consoles were sold by the end of October.
The Nintendo Wii launched in Australia on December 7 last year. It broke the record set by Microsoft's machine, according to GfK, which reported that 32,901 Wii consoles were sold in the first four days.

The votes have been counted, the phone lines are closed - and top shop watchers Chart-Track can now reveal that UK consumers bought no less than 165,000 PlayStation 3 units in the first two days after the console went on sale.
That makes PS3 the fastest-selling home console in history, beating the Wii - which shifted 105,000 units during its launch weekend - and Xbox 360, with 70,000 sold. Microsoft and Nintendo struggled to meet demand for their consoles, leading to bare shelves, empty hands and wet cheeks across the land.

Sony has admitted that the Store element of the PlayStation 3's online service is unavailable in several countries, adding that some won't receive access to it at all.
"There are more than 102 territories in the region, and each Store has to be made unique for each territory due to different currencies and languages," Nick Sharples, SCEE's director of corporate communications, told our sister site GamesIndustry.biz.
"Stores will reach some territories in due course," Sharples continued. Some though - like Azerbaijan - simply won't, for reasons including a lack of broadband penetration.
The PS3 Store, through which it's possible to download game demos, premium downloadable games and other additional PS3 content, is seen as one of the key factors in Sony's online service.

There's an extra hour of sunshine in our day, we've managed to avoid those nasty new £20 notes and Japan's resident badboy developer Tecmo has released new Ninja Gaiden Sigma screens - we can think of much, much worse ways to start the week.
In case you missed it, Sigma is essentially a prettier PS3 update of last year's excellent Xbox entry Ninja Gaiden Black, expanded with dual-sword combat and the lovely Rachel as a playable character.
In case you missed it, we recently interviewed the game's director Yosuke Hayashi, where he explicitly told us that Sigma is way more than just a port of Ninja Gaiden: Black. Hit this link for the full interview.
If all goes well it'll be playing on our still dust-free PS3s by the end of the year.

Remember those 'light gun' games the kids used to rave about back in the day? Well, according to several US retailers the latest version of Nacmo's screen-shooting Time Crisis series is heading to console.
Time Crisis 4 is due for PlayStation 3 in November this year, if EBGames and GameStop listings are to be believed.
The retailers also claim that a new version of Namco's nostalgic gun controller the Guncon is on the way for PS3 - which is a bit of luck really because we can't really imagine playing Time Crisis very well without it.
Unfortunately, Namco's UK op was unavailable for comment at the time of writing - but perhaps this is the company's already confirmed "new shooting game?" Fingers crossed, we suppose.

UK senior regional director for MS has been speaking to the times about the arrival of PS3 across Europe last Friday.
"In the technology and gaming there's really little in the PS3 where I can say, 'Gosh, I wish we had that'," he told the Times online. "The biggest threat that Sony has for us is the brand that's been established around it."
While Thompson admitted that PS3's graphics would give 360 a run for its money, he said that Microsoft is leading the race in the online department: "More and more we're seeing that the online experience is a really important factor. Sony has come up with an online world that seems to let you do just about everything except gaming.
"It's two, three years ahead of the market. People won't want to replace their entire DVD collections, and they'll get a better resolution with a standard DVD on an Xbox than a PS3. It's nowhere near the importance of the format war between VHS and DVD. The internet is becoming an increasingly important medium. Surely online is going to be the distribution method for much of the high-definition content."

via Games Industry
Microsoft has reignited its war of words with arch rival Sony following the launch of PlayStation 3 in Europe, with UK boss Neil Thompson attacking the system’s price tag and Blu-ray functionality.
Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, Thompson dismissed suggestions that the PlayStation 3's in-built Blu-ray drive gives the machine a tactical advantage over Xbox 360.
"Do I want to make people pay £200 extra for a machine with discs that have storage space I don’t need? My answer's no, I don't need to do that today," Thompson said. "And I don't think I'm going to need to do that for quite a while."
Thompson argued that the flexibility of 360, which allows users to upgrade their experiences over time, will be key to the console's success. "I’m not sure the market has moved to high definition [movies] yet," he said.
"And if and when it does, then the way that we’ve constructed the offering we’ve made means we’ll be able to go whichever way we want."
The inclusion of a Blu-ray drive in every PlayStation 3 unit has been cited as one of the reasons for the system's hefty GBP425 price tag. The premium Xbox 360 unit carries a lower RRP of GBP 279.99, but does not allow users to play next-gen DVD movies out of the box. A separate HD-DVD drive must be purchased at a cost of GBP 129.99.
Sony executives have been at pains to argue that the additional storage Blu-ray offers is also essential for games, as it means developers are freed from memory restrictions they may encounter on other platforms.
But according to Thompson, Microsoft’s "nimble" hardware could adapt to anything the Sony console has in its arsenal. He cited the 360's latent ability to output in native 1080p - a feature previously only available on PS3.
"I’d be really surprised if technologically, and we’re a software company, we couldn’t get to a situation where we can deliver whatever content we need to," he offered - adding that improved compression techniques and the ability to deliver content via Xbox Live would negate any disc storage issues in the future.
"This is about the architecture of the hardware. With the PS3 you’ve got a big, heavy truck that requires a big, heavy engine.
With Xbox you’ve got a much more nimble box that uses software in the architecture of the box in a much more nimble way."
Thompson concluded, "That’s the difference between us and PlayStation - we didn’t have a need to develop a really complicated engine to get Blu-ray players into the market. We wanted to deliver HD gaming. Judge us on what we’ve done."

via Games Industry
High street retailer HMV has described Sony's decision to offer free Bravia televisions to the first PS3 buyers as "unnecessary", warning that it could be seen as a last-minute bid for positive PR.
Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz a spokesperson for the high street retailer said, "The stunt of giving away over £200,000 worth HDTVs, though great for the fans that managed to get one, struck me as being slightly unnecessary in the greater scheme of things - especially as it may have encouraged some of the more cynical media to think of it as a last-minute attempt to bolster queues and PR coverage."
The official UK launch event for PlayStation 3 took place at the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street last Thursday night. With just 20 minutes to go before the console went on sale, Sony UK boss Ray Maguire announced that the first 125 people in the queue would each be receiving a 46" high-definition television worth around GBP 2000.
"If Sony had that kind of money to spend I'm surprised they didn't just invest it in a truly memorable and fantastic launch event, full of theatre and special effects, like the one we saw for Nintendo Wii - which to my mind remains the benchmark for such launches," the spokesperson continued.
Sources told GamesIndustry.biz that HMV was originally lined up to host the PS3 launch event, just as it held midnight openings for the PSP and Wii. However, Virgin Megastores was eventually chosen as Sony's official retail partner.
HMV Oxford Street opted to host a special 'breakfast launch' at 7.30am on Friday, offering free copies of Virtua Tennis 3 to the first 150 customers buying a PS3 console, while other branches around the country did open at midnight.
"We've been very happy with the overall launch so far and with the response to our midnight and breakfast openings, including our Sega promotion," said the spokesperson.
Demand for the PS3 had been building steadily over the past few weeks, but it's really taken off these last few days as the media have become more interested."
zHowever, queues for the late night and early morning PS3 launches were much smaller than those seen for Xbox 360 and Wii - with many retailers, including HMV, attributing this to healthy stock supplies and the time of year.
"Obviously there's been relatively strong supply of the console compared to other platform launches, which enjoyed a major advantage coming out just before Christmas to become 'must have' gift items. So we're in the nice position of actually having some units for customers to buy off-the-shelf for a change rather than having to apologise for being out of stock."
According to the spokesperson, HMV is expecting to sell through its remaining PlayStation 3 stock "quite quickly, if this level of interest continues".
"Sony have a great track record in achieving huge household penetration over the course of a campaign, and there's every prospect we'll see the same for PS3," he added.
"Sales of the console can only grow - especially as more titles are released."

The latest stats for the Folding@home project reveal that more than 30,000 PlayStation 3 owners have now signed up to take part in the project.
The project, which kicked off earlier this month, is being conducted by Stanford University and uses the power of the PS3's Cell chip to calculate data. By utilising the Cells of thousands of consoles world wide, researchers hope to find out more about the causes of diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis and cancer.
According to the latest statistics, nearly 40,000 PS3 CPUs are linked with the project - and more than 30,000 have been actively performing calculations in the last 50 days.
That figure stood at just under 15,000 on Friday, and has likely been boosted by new sales of PlayStation 3 following the console's European launch.
To sign up for Folding@home, which runs while PS3 consoles are idle, users must select the relevant icon in the Xross Media Bar.

As I always say, its been a while but I've been busy working on other (PSP) projects which I hope to show results of soon. Also I would like to explain why I make this Portal, firstly, to enable some kind of homebrew to all those not on 1.50 or on custom firmware and secondly, to make better use of the PSP browser which in my view is not used enough. So this can be used on any PSP from 2.00 to 3.11 and custom firmwares too!
This version contains-
100 Games
30+ Applications
8 Flash Cartoons
20 demos directly downloadable and 1 Zip
30+ Music and Video Downloads
110+ wallpaper downloads
45 RSS Channels video and audio
10 Game Saves
30+ Links on Links Page
Portal 117 Live
Instructions-
1. After Unziping folder place Portal 117 Folder in D:\PSP\COMMON to make D:\PSP\COMMON\Portal 117
2. On your PSP Browser type file:/psp/common/portal117/portal117.htm
3. The main portal page should load up, from here you can select Portal 117 Live, Games, Apps, Media, Demos, Wallpapers, RSS and Podcasts and Links, I would suggest adding the main page to your bookmarks or setting it as your home page for future use.

Regular PSP Fanboy reader Hashbrown Hunter commented, "It looks like Sega doesn't love the PSP enough to make a good game." At GDC, I played Full Auto 2 and noted that "Weapons don't feel damaging enough, and it simply doesn't feel like your car is taking damage." Well, looks like fears were warranted--Full Auto 2 sucks. Too bad it couldn't break away from the curse of its console counterpart.
IGN (61/100) thinks the game lacks depth: "An extremely shallow career mode, unbalanced vehicles and weaponry and simplistic tasks makes this a game that only the hardest of the hardcore racing fans would want to play."
GameSpy (60/100) notes that poor design choices litter the game: "All would not be lost if the level design and mission objectives worked to the game's strengths. Only, they don't."
Gamespot (41/100) thinks the game fails on almost every level: "One of the things that Full Auto got right on consoles was its explosions, and this version has none of that, either."
Looks like this franchise has crashed and burned. Let's hope that future PSP games from Sega actually show us some real love.

I did this small app to fix my psp´s stuck pixels, since
I found the other fixers boring, I made one myself with many new features.
Post your comments please. Please report any bug.
MultiPixelFixel by MexicanSnake
This application allows you to:
-Fix many pixels (4 cursors)
-Predator mode (Change the background color to seek the stuck pixels)
-Sounds for commands
-Minimize and maximize the cursors
-Change the speed of the cursors
Controls:
- Pad => move cursors
- X => speed up/down
- R => change the background color (black, red, green, blue, white)
- /\ => return
- [] => start flashing/ stop flashing
- O => maximize/minimize the cursors
- Select => change the current cursor
WARNING!! Dont look at the flashing squares!, this can harm your eyes!.
Dont expect a super fixer, you must keep flashing the stuck pixels by 30 mins or more...
I hope you like it, this is my first aplication for the psp
since I just made games .
C ya!.
Perhaps stuck pixels can in most cases be recovered, dead pixels cant be recovered.

Great news article from IGN
On March 24, 2005, Sony Computer Entertainment released the PlayStation Portable in North America.
At the time, there was nothing but tremendous hope and hype for the system. This was Sony, entering the handheld videogaming market. The first time this company entered a gaming market, Sony not only took over, it completely transformed it -- what was once considered a "kids' toy" (one that dad would occasionally sneak playtime on) was now the centerpiece of the entertainment area for every family member in every household across the globe. Videogames had evolved, and Sony was there just in time to embody the new generation of videogames, to be the embracing host for this emerging and expanding artform.
And now, Sony was going to take that same DNA and form something that gamers and entertainment seekers could take anywhere they go. All this, many thought, might happen all over again...
Two Years Later...
A lot can be said about what has gone right and what has gone wrong for PlayStation Portable since that launch, but one thing has been proven for certain: it's hard as anything to make it in the portable videogaming business. Nintendo is the only manufacturer to have survived it for the long haul, and even with its mighty franchises and its dominating control over this market, Nintendo has still not traversed the landmines perfectly -- major genres such as Sports, Shooters, Fighting and Racing have had difficulty finding interest in the handheld gaming audience even with the success of Game Boy and now DS, and to date, only one title has managed to ship on Nintendo DS with an ESRB M rating. If any company other than Nintendo were to have a chance at creating a fanbase and consumer audience in the handheld videogaming biz, it would be Sony. It had the clout, it has the developers and publishers, it had the franchises, it had the gamers, and it had the PlayStation vision of what videogamers want and what can be done with an entertainment device.
And, of course, it still has all of that. Although the PlayStation Portable has not quite changed the handheld videogaming market in the way that the two PlayStation consoles have (or, as SCE's current President Kazuo Hirai once put it, "...elevate portable entertainment out of the handheld gaming ghetto"), its successes are far too often ignored. This is the first major gaming system to have online-enabled games available at launch, and in a portable form no less. This is the system that brought full console-quality productions like Grand Theft Auto and Metal Gear Solid to a portable machine while even the enormous user base of the Nintendo DS system still has not convinced most publishers to spend the extra pennies on production value. (That said, DS may be missing a few voice-overs and some more expansive game concepts, but it has wooed away from consoles the epic Dragon Quest IX -- the shock that gamers expressed at that news showed that millions still didn't know that handheld gaming is no longer just Pokemon and Tetris.) This is the system that brought everything that is PlayStation into a market that previously only had one option for gamers looking to take the good times on the go.
But what about the competition, and what about the fact that Nintendo DS is clearly the best-selling portable on the market? Hell, the Nintendo Ds is the best-selling game system of this new generation, period -- nothing stands up to it as competition. But just because Nintendo is winning, does that mean that Sony has lost? If there is room for three console game systems, certainly there's room for two portable game systems (especially two with such different approaches and gaming audiences.) Sales have tipped in Nintendo's favor, but those numbers aside, PlayStation Portable has continued to moves units in its second year at around the same rate as all three hyped-up next-gen console systems. (In fact, market analyst David Cole told Next-Gen.biz that DS and PSP could end up with a bigger install base together than the three next-gen consoles combined.) Sony said before the battle began (back when many expected the DS vs. PSP battle to go the other way) that this wasn't a fight over pieces of a single pie but instead a challenge for each system to earn its own. The figures and bets have changed, but the company line is the same: the future of the PlayStation Portable has little to do with competition and everything to do with what this PlayStation handheld system is able to accomplish as a gaming and entertainment unit.
PSP: Year Three
So, what is the future of PlayStation Portable? On the anniversary of the system's launch, IGN has talked to a number of the top minds and most experienced creators working with PlayStation Portable to ask that question. Sony calls the future of gaming the "Game 3.0" era, and when you read through what they've said, you will know how PlayStation Portable fits into that future.

What is the future of the PlayStation Portable? That was the question IGN posed to some of the brightest and biggest talents who have worked with the game system. It's going to take technology, skill and vision to keep PSP going at this pace and attract a bigger audience. If there's a development team out there that thinks it has proven its ability to pull that off, chances are they got a buzz from IGN this week.
Each developer that participated in IGN's The Future of PSP feature was asked a series of questions about their work with PlayStation Portable, both past and present. To give context to the entire opinion set, we asked each team a set of six common questions about the PSP:
What have you learned from PSP?
How do you approach PSP development?
How tough are the budgets on PSP games?
What can Sony could do for developers?
What features of PSP need to be pushed?
What is the future of PSP?
Not all of the developers and producers we talked to were able to take part in the feature (between difficult development schedules, tricky license issues and other reasons, a few of your favorite PSP developers may not have answers for you yet on their views of the PSP's future.) However, we do want to extend our appreciation to every single person that participated or talked with us about this feature. We would also like to thank the teams for their candor and insight -- we at IGN learned a heck of a lot about the PSP from talking with the teams powering it, and we're sure you'll learn a lot from reading through what they all had to say.
What is the future of PlayStation Portable? You're about to find out...
