Ready At Dawn Studios is an independent development studio based in Santa Ana, California, and composed of former Naughty Dog (Jak and Daxter) and Blizzard developers.
Established in 2003, the 40-person company is most widely recognized for the critically acclaimed PSP title Daxter, but recently revealed that it is working on its second PSP title, a side story to Sony's successful God of War franchise.
Gamasutra recently had the opportunity to interview Ready At Dawn's president Didier Malenfant about his studio's history, God Of War and Daxter PSP, the technical pluses and minuses of developing for Sony's handheld, and the company's engine licensing and original IP plans.

Remember the PSP remake of Final Fantasy 1? It is getting original content, a brand new dungeon called the labyrinth of time. Once you step into this extra dungeon you lose HP with every step and as a new challenge your four menu commands are restricted. Before you step into the labyrinth of time you might want to fight Gilgamesh and the other Final Fantasy bosses in the Soul of Chaos dungeon to boost your party’s level enough to face the ultimate Final Fantasy I challenge.

Article via Gameinformer:
Game Informer: Looking back on the last two years, what are your overall thoughts on the PSP?
John Koller: I’m going to set it up by year, because it’ll segue way nicely into what we’re looking at for this upcoming year. We’re very pleased with the PSP business here and it’s really fitting in perfectly with what we have set out with from the beginning. As we’ve talked about many times, the PSP doesn’t directly compete against any product really that’s out in the market right now, just due to its full feature set. So the onus came onto us at SCEA to market that appropriately, and also to place the correct content behind each of those buckets. So that’s really been over the past year our goal, to really focus on the content for not only for last year but also for this upcoming year and in years to come, to make sure there’s enough content efficiently and really perfectly placed behind each of those feature sets.
We have as the end of March there’s going to be 250 plus games available, so the game side of the PSP has been really well-received by developers and publishers. We talk to third parties quite a bit; they’re still very bullish on the PSP. Obviously, on the first party we’ve got a number of great titles coming out this year, as does the third party—including some exclusive titles from the third party for PSP—so the game side I think is very buttoned up. Over the last year, we added TivoToGo, the year prior we had Location Free TV for kind of a TV bucket.
The UMD business has been fairly steady. As many people know, some retailers decided to get out of the business, several have gotten back in the business—actually last holiday. They saw the growth potential, and in fact we have seen some growth there in that category, so there have been a number of more efficiently targeted releases, less of the outside of the target demo type movie content and more of the action and comedy that really resonates well. Music has shot up. Music in our latest research is actually the #2 use for the PSP behind single-player games and it kind of came as a surprise. We knew music was going to be important, but how quickly it shot up the ranks and people using the music functionality when they travel or even at home has been a nice surprise. And then obviously the Internet and some of the other areas that are growth areas for us I think we’re going to look at this year to try and promote. We also are going to try and expand our target audience this year. Since launch, we’ve been focused pretty heavily on the older more travel oriented consumers someone who we’ve called “urban nomads” but they are the ones taking subways to work, commuting, or taxis, planes, whatnot. And we’re going to start trending a little bit younger. We’re seeing a lot of sales coming from the teen group–13-17–in fact that’s our #1 owner group now for the PSP. We’re really going to focus a lot of our marketing efforts on that area this upcoming year.
GI: Do think Sony as a company has accomplished its goals with the PSP so far?
Koller: Yes. There’s a lot of other goals we have for it. We talk about it here as the cultural product that kind of resides between our living room console products–PS2-PS3. The goal from the beginning with the PSP was to always be able to take your entertainment with you. Whether it’s games or other content, we’ve really worked hard on the Remote Play functionality between the PS3 and PSP to allow you to take that other entertainment with you that you may have stored on your PS3. From the overall perspective, we’re very, very pleased. We’ve achieved our goals for where we want to be right now with the PSP. We also realize that there’s a lot of room to grow and there’s a lot of things we’re going to be adding this year.
This year is going to be the best PSP year thus far. There’s just a ton of great things coming. I can’t talk about all of them today, but it’s going to be a fantastic year for the PSP.

via pspfanboy
At GDC, we complained that Sony didn't care about PSP. Phil Harrison's speech was all about Sony's latest console effort, the PS3--Sony's handheld wasn't in the picture at all. Compared to Nintendo's continuous support of DS with original first-party titles, Sony appears to be neglecting PSP. Fortunately, someone at Sony's finally admitting that this is a problem. Sony UK boss Ray Maguire spoke to GI.biz about PSP, and how it will try to compete against Nintendo's incredibly popular handhelds.
"From a PSP situation we have a wider split of third-party versus first-party than our competitors do, who are very much first-party developers. We've been putting quite a lot of energy behind PS3, now we'll be able to split some of those resources and go back to the PSP to make sure we've got some compelling games coming. As a criticism, yes, perhaps part of that is true. But we have a solution in place."
Obviously, God of War is part of that so-called solution. The localization of Jeanne d'Arc is another good step. However, Sony must do more to satiate our appetite for original games. When will we see some of these new "compelling games" that Maguire speaks of?

March 26th, 2007, 23:25 Posted By: wraggster
RafPSP has just informed me of a new version of PSP Radio the Streaming app for the PSP:
Heres whats new:
New release
1.18.1365 (2007-03-26)
All releases are for F/W 2+ with OE (tested on 3.03B); no more static/dynamic mumbo-jumbo. All releases are what was formerly known as dynamic; i.e. plugin based.
Changelog:
1.18.1365 (2007-03-26)
NEW FEATURES
(raf) TextUI: After a configurable amount (default 10 seconds) during playback, the visualizer goes into fullscreen.
(raf) Core: Use PSPRadio.cfg PLUGINS:VISUALIZER_FULLSCREEN_WAIT to set the wait before going into visualizer fullscreen mode. (Set to 0 to disable).
(raf) Core: This fullscreen config wait parameter is now configurable from the PLUGINS Options menu.
(raf) Core: Added kiss-fft routines, and now provide frequency data to visualizer plugins if requested.
(raf) Plugins: Added a spectrum analyzer plugin (based on finespectrum.c for XMMS).
(raf) Core: FFT and VIS_Spectrum use vfpu for some calculations, to get a speedup. (Thanks to MrMr[iCE] for his helpful vfpu library pspmath).
(raf) Core: Removed VBLANK message across the core and sent to UI. UIs need to do it themselves.
(raf) TextUI3d: Updated to use a renderthread instead of vblank message -- Good speed-up.
(raf) Core/Plugins: UI Plugins have versioning now, and won't work across versions of PSPRadio that don't support the same interface.
(raf) Core: Clean-up.
(raf) CScreen: Using GU for clearing screen and background copies. This makes rendering (TextUI) MUCH faster; especially during fullscreen visualization!.
BUG FIXES
(raf) TextUI: When switching skins all the text will disappear. Corrected.
(raf) Choosing exit from option menu is much faster, and less prone to crashing.
KNOWN BUGS
(raf) Core: Static IP connections don't work correctly. Seems the gateway is not used as it should. (Also, make sure CPU speed is 222 when establishing a WiFi connection).
(raf) Core: Module unloading doesn't free up all memory correctly. Even though plugins can now be loaded/unloaded, the PSP can eventually crash as it runs out of memory (after loading/unloading enough times; even though I switched back and forth between the text and 3d UIs over 20 times, and everything worked fine).
Special thanks to albadross for his testing and good suggestions!
Enjoy!,
Raf.

Giant controllers are so last week! I don’t know what’s better: the working light, this guy’s sexy supermodel pose, or the fact that this NES has wheels!
When in doubt, always choose the wheels. Always.

via playfuls
In an interview with Martin Matt, from the popular GameIndustry.biz site, Sony UK managing director Ray Maguire calls America "a land of cheap people", while the UK is “a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium”.
When asked about the high price of the PS3 in PAL areas, especially in the UK (where Sony’s console is currently being sold for GBP 425- US $840- more expensive than anywhere in Europe) this is what Ray Maguire had to say:
“If you take what's considered to be the most expensive and the least expensive – consider the US with its massive land and cheap people. Then you look at the UK – a little island where rent and rates are at an absolute premium, and the cost of people is a lot more. The cost of retail is vastly more in the UK than it is in the US and that's before you even stop to consider the US doesn't have VAT at RRP, they put a small amount on afterwards. Whereas, we get stung by 17.5 per cent. And pity the poor Irish and places like Sweden.
But we have to remember this is no different to selling a cup of Starbucks coffee or a McDonald's hamburger. This is the cost of living in the UK. It just becomes another barrier for us to get more product into the marketplace because the price needs to be set higher to get from our factory to the consumer.”
Maguire continued to defend PlayStation 3’s actual price of GBP425 by saying it’s “the best for the consumer” although he admitted Sony had thought at selling its product for a higher price, namely GBP 429.
Concerning PS3’s apparently disastrous debut in PAL areas, the Sony UK official admitted to some “issues”, but argued that every console launch had its tides in the past: “Well, it's certainly not been smooth sailing. I'd have to say that every launch has its issues. Sometimes they're behind the scenes so you'll see the grace of the swan above the water and not the rapid movement of legs beneath.”
He also put much of the responsibility for Sony’s bad press in the recent period on the media’s continuous hunger for sensational and biased articles, accusing journalists of being “lazy” when it comes to selecting information for their articles:
“Nowadays, with how the media works, not only does information fly around at the speed of light, so does mis-information. With blogs on the increase, people's thought processes are transferred from one place to another and picked up by people who might be lazy when it comes to finding out whether something is true or not. The old adage of never let the truth get in the way of a good story is probably more prevalent than it has been before”.

A classic story about family, respect, and loyalty, Mario Puzo's The Godfather and the Paramount Pictures film based on that novel serve as the game's inspiration. The Godfather® The Don's Edition puts you at the center of the action in one of history's most revered cinematic masterpieces, allowing you to choose your path as you rise from lowly outsider to envied and feared Don in a living world 1945-1955 New York.
The Godfather The Don's Edition for PlayStation 3 offers countless choices for solving the family's problems with brutal violence, skillful diplomacy, or a cunning mix of both. Use your powers of loyalty and fear to earn respect through interactions with police, businessmen, racket bosses, other mobsters, and more. The decisions you make have lasting consequences, just as they do in the legendary mob underworld of The Godfather books and films.
The Godfather film featured many of Holly-wood's finest actors and several are contributing to the game's development. Actors lending their voices to add a dramatic and cinematic touch to the game include the late Marlon Brando as Don Vito Corleone, James Caan as Sonny Corleone, and Robert Duvall as consigliore Tom Hagen.

As if on cue, the vicious news cycle repeats itself. Just days after the PlayStation 3 made its simultaneously generous, in the UK, and beleaguered, in France, European debut, would-be savvy eBayers are finding it just as difficult to unload their wares as their North American counterparts did several months ago. According to TimesOnline, "eBay's pricelist suggests that this time round the touts have misjudged demand." After looking up the definition for "touts" we realized this all seemed familiar ... almost like déj* vu.
The week after the PS3's North America debut we even geeked out with some eBay stats and arrived at the scandalous conclusion that "next-gen auction prices fall as supplies increase." The problem, so much as it is one: UK shops remain well stocked with PS3 consoles!

The alleged leader of Oakland street gang the Nut Cases was sentenced to 75 years to life by Alameda County Superior Court on Friday. Gregory Colbert and five others, who entertained a puzzling fixation with Planters' Mr. Peanut and enjoyed hazy sessions of Grand Theft Auto III, have been linked to a series of murders and armed robberies that terrorized Oakland in late 2002, and lasted until the Nut Cases were rounded up in January 2003.
San Francisco Chronicle's continued coverage of the case suggests that the Nut Cases imitated the violent acts they'd repeatedly carried out in the virtual world of GTAIII. It's unclear if this "explanation" was offered up during the trial by the defense. But, if GTA could actually induce violent sociopathic behavior, then we'd have a worldwide crisis on our hands. We're talkin', like, tens of millions of Nut Cases!

Remember Cellius, the subsidiary company formed by Namco Bandai and the head of Ken Kutaragi? You'd be forgiven if your memory is a bit hazy on the matter, since the $824,000 investment had naught to show for its efforts at the time. Today brings a different story, however, along with a slew of scans supposedly escaping from the pages of a recent Famitsu issue. It would be wise to sprinkle the word "supposedly" throughout this entire post, as these images have migrated hands and servers so many times, it's difficult to pinpoint their source or level of authenticity.
Though the stunning screenshots of Brave Arms, Chain Lim!t and Second Season 01 could represent target renders or similar technical tomfoolery, the abundance of guns, explosions and atmospheric lighting conveys quite a bit of excitement nonetheless.
