In a note to investors today, Goldman Sachs analyst Yuji Fujimori predicted that Sony will drop the price of the PS3 by $100 dollars this October. So how will the price cut be justified? Volume! Kidding, Fujimori cites the reduction of good ole fashion parts; the fewer there are, the cheaper it is to manufacture.
For example, PSX was originally manufactured with 700 components, later reduced to 200. The PS2: 2,000 parts reduced to 600. A smaller cell processor should help reduce costs as well. So for those still sitting on the fence, would a $100 PS3 price drop sway you into buying; or would it take more than that?

Game has dropped its plans to open at midnight on Thursday for the UK launch of PS3 following the Metropolitan Police's concerns over safety. And we think they're right, to be honest. It's a lot of machine to go walking around London with in the dark.
Instead the store will open at 7am on launch day, making sure there's plenty of public transport to go around so you don't have to walk the streets looking for a bandit cab or all-night bus clutching a massive PlayStation bag.
Game will invite the first 150 gamers who have pre-ordered PS3 to the store at 7am to be greeted with bacon butties, pastries and coffee. The store will open at 9am for all other customers.
Game MD Anna Macario said, "The launch of the PS3 is a big deal to our customers. We are managing the launch so it is safe for them, and the only thing they have to concentrate on is securing their new console."
The official PS3 launch is still planned to go ahead at the Virgin Megastore, just down the road from Game at midnight. We'll be there, watching your back.

T is the title of a just-announced game for PC and consoles (Xbox 360 and PS3, no doubt) that chucks players into the big bad shoes of crims running amok in San Francisco in 1969.
Specifically, you'll be robbing banks, pulling jobs, getting caught up in high-speed car chases with cops and shoot-outs as you work toward your ultimate goal - breaking into the San Francisco Mint. Sounds a bit like Ocean's Eleven meets Bullitt.
HEIST's publisher Codemasters fills us in on the plot: "It's 1969, the summer of love in San Francisco. Enter Johnny Sutton, fresh out of jail and a descendant from a long line of big-time thieves, including his father who was gunned down during a job some years back.
"Playing as Johnny, and together with his Uncle Sal and reunited crew, players are set pull off dozens of heists that will inevitably make a name for him as the greatest bank robber of all time."
The game's being developed by inXile (responsible for recent The Bard's Tale remake), and the company's creative director Maxx Kaufman has explained the dev has designed HEI$T "so that players feel like a part of the best robberies and car chases from classic movies".
"Everything from the different types of jobs to pull and the reckless pursuits by the police through the streets of San Francisco, to the sarcastic banter back and forth between the members of the crew, gives HEI$T the action and style of the great attitude and rock-driven films of the 60's."
HEI$T is currently pencilled in for release in the fourth quarter of 2007.

Sony's CEO Sir Howard Stringer has commented that if the PlayStation 3 fails in the market it will be due to the high price point attached to the next-gen console.
Speaking in a interview with US TV program CEO Exchange, Stringer likened the console to a Mercedes car and said that it was in a different league to Nintendo's Wii console.
"If we fail, it is because we positioned PS3 sales as the Mercedes of the videogame field," said Stringer.
"PS3 is a different audience and it can be whatever it wants – a home server, game device, even a computer," he added.
Stringer praised Nintendo's latest home console, calling it a "a wonderful device," but he believes it "has a different target audience" to the PlayStation 3.
The CEO also stated that sales of Blu-ray DVD movies, the format that forms a central component of the PS3 and is one of the main reasons it demands a high price, is currently enjoying better market penetration that the rival HD-DVD format.
"We are selling 3-to-1 versus to them," he said. "We have exclusives with Disney, Fox, Sony and they have the top 15 of 20 movies at the moment."
"At some point Blu-ray will take over based on ...this support."

Sony has revealed that 1,782 PlayStation 2 titles will be playable on the PlayStation 3 when it launches in Europe this Friday.
"Our engineers have been working overtime, and have succeeded in delivering a significant number of playable PS2 titles for the European launch," commented David Reeves, president of SCEE.
However, the UK boss reiterated the company's main focus in the future will be on PlayStation 3 development, not on the delivery of backwards compatible PS2 games.
"We will be adding additional titles to this list in future firmware upgrades, but as we have made clear before, in the future our resources will be increasingly focused on developing new services and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, rather than on delivering PS2 backwards compatibility."
The full list of all 1,782 compatible titles is available here.
Consumers will be able to play PS2 titles by downloading and installing the latest 1.6 firmware upgrade, available from midnight on Thursday.

GAME marketing director Anna Marcario has told GamesIndustry.biz that PlayStation 3 has more functionality than any other console on the market - a factor which is helping to create huge demand.
"The customer reaction to the arrival of the Sony PlayStation 3 really has been nothing short of phenomenal," she said.
"With a huge range of titles available for launch and having so much more functionality than any other games console, our customers can’t wait to get their hands on this incredible machine."
Marcario's comments came after GAME announced that it will no longer be holding a midnight PS3 launch event at its Oxford Street store, following police concerns about the safety of shoppers.
After consulting with the police, GAME has decided to open the store at 7am instead - but only for the first 150 gamers who pre-ordered PlayStation 3 units. They will be given breakfast and PS3 goodie bags. The store will be open to all customers from 9am onwards.
Earlier this week, high street retailer HMV also announced that it would be opening in the early morning rather than at midnight as previously planned. However Sony's official launch partner, Virgin Megastore, will be hosting a midnight event.

Plans for the official UK launch of PlayStation 3 have been announced, revealing that customers will be able to camp out in Oxford Street's Virgin Megastore from 12 noon tomorrow.
According to a statement, the lower ground floor of the store "will be turned into a 'campsite' to ensure fans stay comfortable and safe". Entertainment, refreshments and "surprise events" are promised, and the first customers to arrive will receive official PlayStation merchandise.
Customers are invited to camp out in the store from midday tomorrow - with the first PS3 units set to go on sale at midnight on Friday March 23.
It appears that Virgin will be the only Oxford Street store to host a midnight launch event for the console. Both HMV and GAME have opted to host early morning events instead - although some regional branches will still be opening at midnight.

Raf has released a new version of PSPRadio! Heres whats new for this version:
1.17.1349 (2007-03-20)
NEW FEATURES
(raf) Plugins: Added some VERY SIMPLE visualization plugins. This only works under TextUI at the moment. (Look under the Options-Plugins menu)
(raf) Plugins: PSPRadio saves current selected plugin in config file section PLUGINSEFAULT_VISUALIZER
(raf) Core: Localfiles: Empty directories are not listed anymore.
(albadross) TextUI: Updated screens for the visualizer plugins. Added new skins: Selector2 and Spectrum.
(raf) TextUI: Converted rendering to use page flipping (double buffering).
(raf) TextUI: Added a PLUGINSISPLAY_FPS option to config files. (not there by default -- disabled).
(raf) Plugins: Added sample sourcecode for a simple visualizer plugin to the release.
BUG FIXES
(raf) Core: Fixed button repeat handling that broke when implemented the button mapping. (This also corrected problems with HPRM)
(raf) Core: If resuming(from suspend) from a paused state, it would not continue from where it left off.
KNOWN BUGS
(raf) TextUI: Sometimes, when switching skins all the text will disappear. Moving Up/Down, or pressing START is the current work-around.
(raf) Core: Static IP connections don't work correctly. Seems the gateway is not used as it should.
(raf) Core: Module unloading doesn't free up all memory correctly. Even though plugins can now be loaded/unloaded, the PSP can eventually crash as it runs out of memory (after loading/unloading enough times; even though I switched back and forth between the text and 3d UIs over 20 times, and everything worked fine).

KL has posted an entry in the Neoflash Coding Comp:
The objective is to get the ball to the red flag. You can draw a line using cross. If you hit triangle the ball will start to fall and bounce over your line. if your ball doesn't reach the flag you can hit triangle again to go back to edit mode. if you're in edit mode you can delete your line by pressing square.
I hope you like it!

Danzel has posted an entry into the Neoflash Coding Contest:
AFKIM is back and better than ever
AFKIM is an (almost) universal messenger client for PSP (Supports: AIM, ICQ, MSN, GTalk, Yahoo!)
I've also made some guides to hopefully help new people get started with AFKIM.
Even if you've used it before, it would be worth giving the How To Use guide a quick read over.
.
The changelog for AFKIM3 is as follows:
--3
Much better, more usable program.
Works in OE kernel, DHCP ONLY CURRENTLY, not sure why static IP address doesn't work.
Faster display rendering (Keyboard lags less)
Better wifi handling - User can rechoose which to connect to if connecting fails.
Better menu system, lots more menu items.
- Away / Back
- Remove Account
- Reconnect to Wifi (No more quitting AFKIM to reconnect! yay)
- Get Buddy Details
- Rename Buddy
- Block/Unblock Buddy
- Delete Buddy
Fixes related to pressing buttons, menus now continue scrolling if you hold up or down.
Better connection handling.
Many many code cleanups
Fix memory leaks (introduce a new known one )
--2 and a bit
Quit option.
Ability to use start as well as X to go buddy select -> chat.
FIX: Editting text box with space messes up display.
FIX: Account details don't save sometimes.
There are current 2 versions:
- Experimental OE version, tested in game310 folder with OE 3.10', seems to not work in 3.03
- 1.5 Version, tested in game150 folder on OE 3.10'
The OE Version works with WPA connections, you must use automatic network configuration however (DHCP)

phosphorous has posted an entry into the Neoflash Coding Contest:
-= Old School Library (OSLib) Sprites Lib =-
OSLib is a C library that greatly simplifies coding games and apps on the PSP. It took second place in the NEO Spring Compo 2006. This library builds on top of OSLib to make animated sprites as easy as everything else in OSLib.
The eboot demonstrates all of the features including:
- Create an animated sprite with only an image, height, and width
- Animation plays and loops automatically
- Control the animation framerate
- Functions to play and stop animation
- Ability to reverse animation
- Animation can be flipped vertically or horizontally
- Set start and end frames of animation
- Jump to a specific frame of the animation
- Create multiple sprites from one sprite sheet
- Create different sized sprites from one sprite sheet
The readme also shows how to easily create spritesheets from animated GIFs found on the web.
Full source included.
