The creative force behind the design of PS3, Teiyu Goto, has revealed how the Spider-Man font came to be used on PS3 in an interview with the Official PlayStation Magazine.
Goto explained, "Take the PS2 logo - we created it to blend in with the rectangular shape of the console. Personally, I feel very strongly that the logo would not have looked right on PS3.
"If you really look at the PS3 contour carefully, it is rounded when viewing the console in profile. Rather than creating a typography with all the risks that entails, it was wiser to use the one from Spider-Man, for which Sony has the rights.
"It was also the wish of President Kutaragi, who insisted that I use this typography. In fact, the logo was one of the first elements he decided on and the logo may have been the motivating force behind the shape of PS3."
Issue 005 of Official PlayStation Magazine goes on sale tomorrow.

PS3's version of horror-FPS F.E.A.R., which was originally planned a s a European launched title but missed the boat, will be out on April 20.
The game's already released on PC and Xbox 360, and in a nutshell focuses on the plight of an elite soldier trained to handle the unhandle-able (is that a real word?) who is plunged into a tale of violence and horror. It's got lots of shooting, lots of blood and lots of cool slow-mo action.
In addition to the single-player bloodbath, there's 16-player multiplayer and PS3 F.E.A.R. is enjoying an exclusive level and weapon and Instant Action Mode. The game's publisher, Vivendi, describes this mode as a "new arcade style mode filled with close quarters battles tracking player progress via leader boards via the PlayStation Network for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system".

Many PSP Homebrewers seem upset that they can't upgrade to Sony's latest official firmware. Why? Because they've been using custom firmware on TA-082 PSPs. The 3.30 firmware installer doesn't seem to run on these modified systems, giving a mysterious 'DRNffffffd7 error code." These glitches seem to mirror the many found when Ratchet & Clank was released. So much for respecting the homebrew scene, huh?
Firmware 3.30 gives users some important functionality, such as official support for full-resolution videos and free internet access at T-Mobile Hotspots nationwide. For now, it seems as though users of custom firmware will have to wait until Dark_Alex and the rest of the homebrew community work their magic again.

Football games are bigger than ever before, raking in millions for the likes of EA and Konami. But what does 'next-gen' really mean for football games? Well, less repetitive commentary for a start...
Speaking to CVG recently about the future of football games and their move to next-gen systems, Andrew Wilson, executive producer of football, EA explained, "We ran out of space on the disc with current gen. Last year's FIFA had 26 leagues, 15 thousand players, kits, players, stadiums, audio and music, you just run out of space. The next gen discs have got more space so in the short term we will have much more commentary on our games."
Wilson believes that the online sides of PS3 and 360 are where developers can really take football to a new level. "Looking long term, these consoles are now online. And I would love to think that we can start to pump dynamic commentary into the game on a weekly basis so you never hear the same thing twice.
"But think about competitions. Imagine having commentators popping up to commentate on interactive games. So you're not reliant on commentary from our game anymore, you got someone who gets online and comments every week instead, who then gets a reputation."
Food for thought? Look out for our full interview with Wilson in the coming days where he talks more about the evolution of football, gives his opinions on the age-old rivalry between FIFA and PES and discusses how the crowd will play a bigger part in the performance of your team on the pitch.

March 29th, 2007, 21:26 Posted By: wraggster
New from Slasher:
This is basically a generic flasher which can flash whatever files your heart desires. I've tried to make the process as simple and noob friendly as possible. Please bare with me while I try to explain how this works.
So basically you have the basic program, SlashNFlash & SlashNFlash%.
Inside of the folder SlashNFlash, there's another folder promptly named 'folders'. You can create as many folders in this 'folders' folder as you want and configure each folder to flash a specific file. I've included most of the more popular flashes as examples. Please, keep in mind, you can create AS MANY FOLDERS AS YOU WANT FOR AS MANY FILES AS YOU WANT. There is no limit.
Now inside each of these folders you MUST have a last.txt(can be empty), and a destination.txt(MUST include the path of where you want the file to be flashed).
And now you can just stick all the files in each of these folders and flash them to the corresponding destination as many times as you'd like.
Inside of the folder SlashNFlash, there's also another folder promptly named 'themes'. You can also create as many folders in this 'themes' folder as you want and configure each folder to be a theme. I've included an example. Please, keep in mind, you can create AS MANY FOLDERS AS YOU WANT. There is no limit.
These theme folders currently support the following files,
topmenu_plugin.rco
01-12.bmp
ltn0.pgf
system_plugin_bg.rco
opening_plugin.rco
system_plugin_fg.rco
photo_plugin.rco
game_plugin.rco
impose_plugin.rco
system_plugin.rco
gameboot.pmf
-
There is now also another option in which you can actually browse your memorystick and choose whichever files you want and flash them where you need to.
You can also include a screenshot of the particular file you are trying to flash. Just make sure the screenshot is a PNG or JPG, and is named the same as its corresponding file. This applies to both the 'folders' folder, AND the 'themes' folder.
V2 - 03/28/07
--
~ GUI Implemented (Font, background image, cursor image, sound effects)
~ New Theme Option
- Create themes and flash them
topmenu_plugin.rco, 01-12.bmp, ltn0.pgf, system_plugin_bg.rco, opening_plugin.rco, system_plugin_fg.rco, photo_plugin.rco, game_plugin.rco, impose_plugin.rco, system_plugin.rco, gameboot.pmf
- Backup your currently applied theme (Goes into the 'backup' folder)
~ More destinations to flash to in file browser
~ Free up some space in your flash0
Note - This is NOT coded in LUA , and this is probobly the last release unless there's anymore suggestions or if I come up with any new amazingly unique ideas for features.

New from daaa57150 :
Hi,
I worked hard on a game in Lua (Mega A**hole Portable) and now I'm starting a new one also in Lua. As I saw how easy it was for me to start again using parts of the code I already did, I decided it would be useful to distribute it as independant libraries. So here is the first, for inputs. With a few easy function calls this allows to see if a button is pressed, since how long, if it's released, if it's pressed since long, if it is repeating (like keyboards)... Timings are of course customizable.
It's really easy to use you basically just need to add the file to your project, execute it, call the update function every loop, and do your stuff:
I made a complete example, run index.lua in the zip file to see it, and read the readme.txt, I explained every function.
This should work in the luaplayer 0.16 (that's what Mega A**hole Portable used) although I haven't tested this exact version (I just polished it, made it readable etc), as I lent my PSP.
But this works perfectly with luaplayer windows (0.20), as it did before.
If you test/use this, tell me if you like it or not, find it useful or think it's totally crap every comment you have will be welcomed (if it's no flaming/trolling of course).
Next to come, maybe, I just leave ideas there: a mod to grimfate's animLib (with image buffering, works good but need my PSP to test), a log in file library, I also have useful functions to deal with .properties files (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.properties) and many other utility functions.
Maybe people are interested in this?

New release from xpack:
So heres an update to the Lua flasher called FileFlasher. Well this one has added security, now with a flash0 space check it makes sure that there is enough memory in the flash0 to flash the file you want. It also now has the ability to free up flash0 space by removing functions that the user chooses.
Heres a quick list of some changes made.
Changes made in v 2.0
* Checks that there is enough flash0 memory when flashing.
* Allows you to browse your memory stick to decide which files you choose to flash.
* Checks to make sure that the battery level is ok for flashing.
* Checks your PSP unit Firmware version
* Checks your PSP nickname
* Allows you to toggle the USB
* Added some graphics
* Small bugfixes
* Creates backups of the following files:
-- 01-12.bmp (Background)
-- topmenu_plugin.rco (XMB Menu)
-- opening_plugin.rco (Coldboot)
-- gameboot.pmf (Video Clip)
-- system_plugin_bg.rco (XMB Wave Effect)
-- game_plugin.rco (Game Images)
-- impose_plugin.rco (Volume Bars)
-- savedata_plugin.rco (Savedata Images)
-- system_plugin.rco (XMB Click Sounds)
-- system_plugin_fg.rco (Battery Pictures)
-- ltn0.pgf (Font)
* Allows you to delete backups
* Allows you to recover any of the backups.
* Allows you to remove and restore files to save flash0 space
* This program will automatically create backup of all files
Just remember that "Any software that performs modification of flash files of the PSP has the potential to render the subject PSP unit permanently inoperative" This application has been used by me and other testers hundreds of times with no problems at all, but just be warned that there is always a risk and I and Cloudpjff7 are not responsible for anything that may happen your PSP System.
If any problem then please report to either me (xpack) or (cloudpjff7) through a PM or shoot me through an email at buckum2004@yahoo.com
Thanks to all people who downloaded this app.
If I get enough support I'll create a tutorial of this app about what each line means and does.

Keystone Light -- the lager of the poor college student. Random comment aside, I realize that there is a possible segue way to the news at hand. If you drink underage, you may get incarcerated and spend a little time in jail. If you love your PS3, you won't do that... because PS3's are banned from jails. In Britain. How did that work? Less than optimal? Whatever, let's get on with it.
Home Secretary John Reid thought that allowing PS3's in prison could be dangerous, as they may "send and receive radio signals" across the country, thanks to the WiFi and PSP connectivity. To officially quote Reid on the subject: "Advice was issued to all prisons in December 2005 that the Sony PlayStation 3 was barred from the prison estate because of the equipment's ability to send and receive radio signals." So they definitely hit this one before it even became a problem. Does this upset anyone? Or would sitting around playing PS3 all day be too good for those who made mistakes?

CHILDREN at a Birmingham school will be using PlayStations as part of their lessons in a revolutionary new education scheme.
Teachers at Holyhead Secondary School in Handsworth are being taught how to use the PlayStation Portable games machine to boost pupils' learning.
The hand-held console will be given to youngsters in the pilot scheme, which aims to turn computer gaming into a new educational tool.
But there won't be any 'shoot 'em up' or football games on offer - the consoles will stay in the classroom and will be initially used to help French, history and geography lessons.
Software giant Sony is using the inner-city school as a pilot for the scheme, which could be extended nationwide depending on its success.
Holyhead was chosen as a guinea pig for the project after recruiting a former Sony high flyer to its teaching ranks.
French language teacher Lorna Diprose switched careers to join the teaching profession in September 2004 and has now established links with the hi-tech Japanese company.
The pilot has involved Holyhead teachers receiving training in the use of the £150 PSPs over the last two months.
Trials involving pupils will begin in the classroom immediately after the Easter holidays.
Head teacher Martin Bayliss said: "This is very exciting.
"It's not about using the console for games, but it does have a lot of exciting potential for learning opportunities.
"Sony are interested in developing education software and we are delighted that they are carrying out their PlayStation pilot at Holyhead."
Mr Bayliss said simulations were being carried out in key subjects, with teachers learning how to create podcasts, download pictures and videos, upload students' work and help students with particular learning needs.
Ms Diprose, who worked for Sony's marketing department for six years, said: "The big key is independent learning.
"The console is just like a mini-computer, but fast, and you can use it to tailor-make lessons for pupils who need support or stretching.
"You are talking about access to all kinds of resources, but it would be very obvious if anyone tried to load games onto them."
The pilot is expected to run until the summer when the results will be assessed.

.It’s always best practice to format the memory stick (MS) prior to flashing a new [custom] firmware to your PSP. It’s even wiser to create regular backups to ensure no data loss or corruption. So why not keep yourself disciplined with XsavioR’s newly introduced “MS Master” application. It’s very easy, and actually quite useful.
Update
2.02e changes:
Backup seplugins folder (right click menu)
Restore seplugins option (gui)
Ms Master 2.02d Compact provides a sophisticated backup / restore method which supports the following:
backup ms
restore ms
bind ms to one of 3 backups
template dumping for redundant backups
backup Gamesaves
restore Gamesaves
utils folder for easy backup / restore
mycomputer right click options
dump Ms to Template dir
restore MS from Template dir
You must accept the default installation directory, otherwise paths won’t register properly; but that’s minor.
To install: Run Msmaster2.0.exe then Desktop.exe. Connect your PSP, run “Bind MS” from the Desktop, follow the instructions, and disconnect / reconnect your PSP thereafter. The rest should be straight forward; run “Ms Master” from the desktop or right click the PSP removable drive from “My Computer.”

Apparently action-RPG Gurumin: A Monstrous Adventure for PSP has been in demand -- so much so, in fact, that publisher Mastiff Games decided they had to take action. If you can't find a copy of the popular game, you can shoot an email to FINDGURUMIN@MASTIFF-GAMES.COM and Mastiff will find a way to solve your problem. Since I haven't gotten a copy for myself yet (or for that matter, the PSP needed to play it), I may end up using that magical little email address myself. So why are people clamoring for this game, anyway?
Well, I played it at GDC at the Sony booth and it definitely caught my eye. It has the classic Japanese adventure feel with hyper cute characters and graphics, and since the PSP has been generally short on RPGs, this one may tide us all over until Crisis Core makes its mighty appearance. It may be of interest to some female players that the main character is female, which you don't get a lot of in RPGs. Personally, I couldn't tell as I thought everyone from Japan was asexual anyway.

Reluctant to update your PSP to the latest firmware? You may want to reconsider. The latest firmware offers PSP users the ability to access T-Mobile's wi-fi service for free. T-Mobile HotSpots can be found at over 8,000 locations across the US, and can be found in Starbucks, Borders, FedEx Kinko's, Hyatt, Red Roof Inns, Sofitel and Novotel Hotels, and select airports. Now, you'll be able to frag friends through Infrastructure almost anywhere in the US ... for free! How sweet is that?
I went to a Starbucks to test it out, and found the process is quite easy:
Bring your PSP® system to a location that provides a T-Mobile HotSpot. (Refer to the T-Mobile HotSpot U.S. Location Map.)
Select (Network Settings) under (Settings).
Select [Infrastructure Mode].
Select [New Connection].
Select [Use Wireless Hotspot].
Select the T-Mobile HotSpot icon.
If you have an existing T-Mobile HotSpot account, select [Enter User Credentials].
Enter your user ID and password, and then press the right button.
or
If you do not have an account, select [Use Promotional Access] to sign up for a complimentary six-month T-Mobile HotSpot account. (To qualify for this promotional access, you must authenticate your PSP® system to the T-Mobile HotSpot network prior to March 28, 2008.)
Check the contents of the settings list.
Save the settings.

A document publicly available via the internet - gawd bless it - has ignited speculation that a revised-hardware PS3 is in the pipeline.
Update: Sony has sent the following statement to Next-Gen: "As mentioned when we made the product announcement for PS3, the system will have different configurations (thus, 60GB HDD with memory card slots and Wi-Fi and 20GB HDD without memory card slots or Wi-Fi both exist).
"Application to the FCC has been made with various possibilities in mind, however, it does not lead to a new product announcement at this time."
Update ends
It's revealed in the document that Sony has made an application requesting 'a class II permissive change' to the console to the US Federal Communications Commission. It's suggested by the changes detailed that a version of PS3 with an 80Gb hard drive will be released to live alongside existing models.
Alterations - i.e. update - to PS3's Bluetooth antennae are additionally related to in the document.
It's likely that any revisions to PS3 hardware would be minor and applied across the board, with a new 80Gb model simply being that - a PS3 with a bigger HDD. We'll just have to wait and see.
Sony declined to comment on the matter when contacted earlier.

Now the dust has settled on the PlayStation 3 launch, UK retailers are beginning to report on what they've seen as the "biggest-ever" launch for a home console.
Retailers are expecting to continue selling the luxury console over the busy Easter sales period, but some have warned that reducing prices to lower stock levels could harm long-term sales.
"Given the relatively plentiful supply, it's fair to say this was our biggest-ever console launch in unit and value terms," HMV's head of games Tim Ellis told GamesIndustry.biz.
"We still have some consoles in stock around the chain, as we were able to order plenty, but we expect these to sell these through over the coming days and weeks, especially as new games titles are released," he said.
"It's been a remarkable week for us here at GAME following the successful launch of the PlayStation 3," revealed Anna Macario, marketing director at GAME.
"We have seen huge demand and seen fantastic sales throughout our 400 stores around the country."
With all pre-orders taken care of, retailers are in the unusual but desirable position of having enough stock in store to sell to customers walking in off the street.
"We've managed to fulfill every one of our pre-orders and continue to see strong interest in the console into this week as well," said Macario.
While sales are good, managing director of Chips Don McCabe called for the retail community not to panic if stores still have plenty of stock left from their launch allocation.
"In many respects it was an exceptional launch, Sony put an awful lot of product in the channel when we're used to previous launches where we have to manage customers expectations," he commented.
"Day one sales were very good, but since then it's not been so good. There seems to be a lot of discounts going around on the machine and on games."
"The market needs to stabilise because there's some retailers that have got a few too many units. They're trying to bring down their stock levels too quickly," he said.

Eidos has confirmed that it won't be releasing most of its major PS3 titles until next year, stating that the console's installed base will not be high enough before then.
As part of a statement released alongside the company's interim results for the six months ended December 31 2006, CEO Jane Cavanagh said, "We believe that PlayStation 3 will be a successful platform, and are developing technology and products for this console.
"However, as we do not believe that the installed base will be high enough until the second half of our 2008 financial year, most of our major product releases on the PlayStation 3 platform are not scheduled before that date."
The six month results reveal a rise in revenues for Eidos from GBP 50.1 million to during the same period last year to GBP 74.5 million. Losses stand at GBP 17.9 million - down by GBP 2 million year-on-year.
Cavanagh said that the board of directors also believes the Xbox 360 and Wii will be successful, with Eidos's first titles for Nintendo's machine due out this spring.
"The board believes that the introduction of new consoles will drive strong demand and pricing over the next five years," Cavanagh continued.
"In addition, the increasing opportunities for digital sales to consumers, through PC downloads as well as the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 platforms, provide the basis for improved margins."
The statement observed that Eidos enjoyed two UK number one hits in the second half of last year with Just Cause and Battlestations Midway, and highlighted the GBP 44 million deal with Warner Bros. that was signed in December.
It also confirmed that the first products from Eidos's new casual games division will be launched in the first six months of 2008, following the acquisition of developer Rockpool Games.

Sony has dismissed rumours that a new version of PlayStation 3 with an in-built 80GB hard drive could be on the way.
Speaking to our sister site, Eurogamer.net, a spokesperson said, "The 80GB we're not making any comment on, but we don't have any plans at the moment."
The rumours began to emerge after Sony filed a request with the US Federal Communications Commission for a class II permissive change, which included details of some tweaks to the console's Bluetooth functionality.
Amongst the models listed were the currently available 20GB and 60GB versions, along with a new 80GB model.
Microsoft yesterday announced plans to release a new Xbox 360 with a 120GB hard drive - and it could be suggested that any new version of PS3 would be likely to feature a drive at least equal to 120GB.

So I've made a lot more progress. Fixed a lot more bugs, went from ~36FPS to ~117FPS with optimizations. Of course now with the full screen color modifying, its back to ~27FPS (Yuck)
Added smooth preview fade in / out (looks really hot)
Fixed alignment for the preview and dice to the grid.
If you look at the bottom of the pics, you'll notice I added a bottom to the grid, next up is the random dice preview arrow at the bottom.
You'll also hopefully notice the very cool color differences between the screenshots. Its still running a little slow but I'm getting further toward my goal.
Added start to pause (instead of show/hide preview line)
L+R = show / hide preview line
Here are 3 teaser screenshots to show off the progress:
