Making an appearance at the Virgin Megastore on Oxford Street, Phil Harrison gave a speechy-speech about the importance of the European market and how he gets all warm and fuzzy inside to see people waiting to get their greasy claws on the see-every-piece-of-dust-and-fingerpint PlayStation 3. We'll just list his quotes that were worthwhile. Why? ...Because. Every speech has highs and lows, you know?
- "The fact that we've got the launch here with more consoles shipped on day one that we've ever had in our history is a compliment to the importance of the European market." Well, the extra months to stockpile the Emotionless PS3's probably helped!
- "I've seen PlayStation 1 and PlayStation 2 launched on Oxford Street but this is the most meaningful for me personally, because I think it's so important not just for our industry but for UK consumers - the fact that they're going to get the best machine with the best software support, the most Network service and the firmware update." Eh, give or take on the software support and network service. But yeah, the PS3 definitely has the firmware update!
- "They had to wait, and I feel really bad about that. But I'm hoping we can make it up to them with the quality of software that we've got coming out." He refers to HOME and LittleBigPlanet, insisting their announcement was coincidental and not meant to build up some European launch steam.
- "The fact that people are prepared to invest their time, their money and their passion in queueing up to be part of a launch is great - and it kind of makes all the hard work worthwhile. It's not just for people in the UK, it's for the guys in Japan who make the hardware, it's for the people who make the software, and the thousands of people who are part of the PlayStation story." Aww, that's a nice note to end on. We're part of a story!
That's about all he said that we're going to mention. Actually, we didn't leave all that much out. Did anyone go to the Oxford Street launch? Was he there in person or was it a video or something? Not sure how that works since Georgia isn't the biggest attraction for important corporation personalities.

The latest Gamestop ad proudly proclaims that the PSP Value Pack has a new low price. The bundle, which includes a Memory Stick, headphones, and a case, now comes $50 cheaper at $199.99--that's the same price as the Core unit.
It's unclear at this time if this is a Sony-mandated price drop, or if it's a Gamestop-only promotion. However, considering how today is PSP's two year birthday, it makes sense to celebrate with a universal price drop. If the Core unit drops in price as well, PSP will almost be able to compete against Nintendo's handheld ... at least in terms of price.

Phil Harrison made an appearance at the official UK launch of the PS3 last night, and used the opportunity to stress the overall importance of the European continent.
"This is the third continent out of three, but it is the most important," he told GamesIndustry.biz. "It's got most countries, it's the most people, it's the most cultures...
"The fact that we've got the launch here with more consoles shipped on day one that we've ever had in our history is a compliment to the importance of the European market."
Basically the game company exec version of a rock band shouting, "European audiences are the best audiences in the world! Woo!" The woo is important. So when did they repeal Australia's continency?
Still, I can see where he's coming from. Europe has given us French toast, Belgian Waffles, Swedish pancakes, English muffins, Polish sausage, and Danish pastries. Seeing as breakfast is the most important meal of the day, logic dictates that Europe be the most important continent.

The PlayStation 3 doesn't have a games portfolio for audiences such as families and kids, says Stephen McGill, Microsoft's head of gaming and Entertainment and Devises Division UK.
"If you look at the PS3 line-up it's quite heavy in shooters and drivers," McGill told CVG in a recent interview. "I'm pleased to say that our portfolio is quite appealing to the masses".
"We've got a great portfolio of games for kids, families, mums and girls", he continues. "As you come into Christmas I think you'll see our portfolio expand to over 300 titles with all the biggest franchises that everyone will want".
McGill also pointed out that the Xbox 360 is the only platform where you can play "Halo 3 and Grand Theft Auto IV". True Facts.
Looking at Sony's first-party launch line-up (Resistance, Ridge Racer, Genji, GT HD etc) we can't really fault McGill's claims, but didn't the Xbox 360 have the same problem back when it launched in 2005?

The God of War official website has an interesting easter egg: you'll see links to the first and second God of War prominently displayed, but off to the right-hand side, you'll see a mysterious, burning red Omega sign. Doesn't it look a lot like the promo for the Island of Rhodes?
As of now, the link does not direct you anywhere. However, once the countdown to the Rhodes is done, chances are that will all change. The PS3 God of War will get a number III: the Omega sign is most likely referring to the PSP version which, as you may recall, features an original storyline.

With all the cold shoulders the PLAYSTATION 3 has been getting in PAL regions, we have been looking for good news. Sadly, we haven't found any. But, Kotakuite Petr from the Czech Republic sends this:
"It was for the first time that something like this has happened here. Never before were there official console launches in CR. Anyway, the whole event was held in a specialized Sony Store named Elvia-Pro in the centre of Prague. It was advertised in print and online media for a good half of March. In spite of this, my expectations regarding number of people willing to stand in line for several hours for PS3 weren't overly high. So, I was surprised to find out, that thirty minutes before midnight, the line was 15 - 20 meters long. According to Sony Czech, there were at least 130 people waiting for PS3 including some minor celebrities. After several hours, PS3 was sold out (there were only about 1000 PS3 for CR launch), which is true for all the Czech Republic. In the end, PS3 launch in CR was by my opinion fairly successful. "
Whew! And we were getting worried.

If you weren't already aware, there actually is a bright side to Sony jacking up the price of its PlayStation 3 for European gamers, and while folks were still forced to camp out to snag a (somewhat) coveted unit, things went over drastically better during London's launch compared to similar ones here in the US. While we knew the Brits and Aussies were fully prepared to blow a good chunk of savings on the pricey machine, Americans should seriously scrutinize just how easily these other nations pulled off the high-profile launch, reportedly happening sans any reckless drive-bys or random acts of violence. More interesting, however, is the tidbit where "everyone who purchased a PS3 at the London launch event received a free 46-inch HD television and a taxi home." You read right -- over £250,000 ($490,450) worth of HDTVs were handed carted out to over 100 presumably elated gamers, and London officials made sure that cabs were readily available to rush buyers home after completing their transactions. Notably, a 17-year old fan snagged the pole position in line after waiting just 36 paltry hours, which still suggests that we Americans are more devoted (or delusional, depending on perspective) when it comes to camping out, but we don't even want to imagine the mayhem that would've ensued here if the first hundred buyers were eligible for a free display. Good show, England, good show.

mediumgauge has released an update to his file browser homebrew for the PSP. Now at version 3.1, one of the most welcomed changes is the prompt on startup for what language you wish to run PSP Filer in.
When mediumgauge asked me for a new icon for Filer, I knew just the person to make it for him - RaiderX from PSP-Downgrades and PSP-Hacks, whose skill at graphics is quite amazing.
Arguably one of the best homebrew out there, download it now for all your flashing needs! Although USB flash access exists, I still have this amazing program on my PSP.
Other changes are:
version 3.1:
general:
1. changed icon design - made by RaiderX
2. added language selector when Filer runs without filer.ini.
3. added German mode. (thanks Experiment1106 to translate)
4. modified analog pad speed in color edit mode.
5. made mp3/wav playback stop when suspended or tuner launched.
filer:
1. fixed a bug that caused when seeing directory info on UMD.
2. fixed when resuming from suspend mode, MS Duo was reloaded.
3. added folder copy/move mode, and merged all copy, move, paste feature
to one.
4. fixed a bug Filer went down when opening too deep folder structure
text viewer:
1. modified up&down scroll speed on analog pad.
binary viewer:
1. modified up&down scroll speed on analog pad.
picture viewer:
1. changing picture by left&right, and back to filer, cursor position
follows to the last picture you seen.

A major new modchip has been announced that works on
PS3
Nintendo Wii
Xbox 360
PS2
Yep weird eh,
SPREAD THE WORD
Heres the info
InFeCtuS is the first versatile modchip ever released in the market, created to work with many different consoles. InFeCtuS will give you access to so many features that it's impossible to describe them all today, some are still in development and more will come in the future, just stay tuned on www.infectus.biz
We developed this modchip with an OPEN concept, we use a CORE reprogrammable, a 512kb flash on board and an USB interface for the PC communication.
The hardware has a very HIGH QUALITY component design:
The core of INFECTUS is the new ACTEL ProASIC3 FAMILY, the new family after the famous APA075 used in the past in many PS2 projects.
We used a 512Kb parallel flash SSTSF040, with a high transfer rate and performance.
Finally, we have got a REAL USB2.0 processor. This high quality component can manage the communication between ACTEL and PC (mini usb connector).
All of the chip PLD/FLASH/USB parts are 100% reprogrammable via USB communication.
For security reasons, all of the applications stored in the flash are AES 128-bit encrypted, to protect our work against chinese market!
The project is produced in Europe with the last technology of BSDL testing.
Being InFeCtuS so versatile, we want to show you at least a little part of its features, ordered by console.
XBOX360 SUPPORT:
Allows to gain total access over the XBOX360 flash driver, so that you can read and write the internal flash of any X360 DVD READER in the market.
Everything can be managed with a very simple and user friendly PC software.
FLASH ID realtime patching, your xbox360 cannot understand if there is any flash running other than the original one.
GLOBE MODCHIP 360 100% emulation including ON / OFF LED
NME 1.2 firmware emulation (at work 80% finished). Allow you to install the chip with few wires like NME.
PS3 SUPPORT:
The first work to be done is to allow our users to flash directly the PS3 BIOS by USB. So no more problem with firmwares, you can install everything you want, when you want. All the complications due to firmware versions that cannot be downgraded will not bother you anymore.
This solution will be released in the next 4 weeks!
Another new feature that we want to add is a REAL TIME patching of the firmware part that you want to be emulated from the chip. Being the 512Kb flash not enough to store a real dual firmware, we'll have to wait for the first hacked firmware to understand if a "realtime" patching will be possible. In case we won't be able to find more ideas, a new version of Infectus with a memory expantion bay will be released.
PS2 SUPPORT:
Complete O2 MODCHIP emulation 100% with all functionalities ( www.o2mod.com) - Included for FREE
REMEMBER THAT O2 MOD IS THE ONLY ONE IN THE MARKET WITH "DNAS PATCH" AVAIABLE!!! DNAS PATCH IS NECESSARY TO HAVEN'T PROBLEMS IN ONLINE GAMING
WII SUPPORT:
Of course this is a free "bonus" in this mod because, we know, most of You wouldn't install such a big and expensive chip on a WII, but being it free... it's a good chance!
WIIKEY / WIIFREE EMULATION: (under developement - 80% ready). This feature will allow you to play just everything you want on your WII.
SOFTWARE MANAGEMENT:
The possibility to manage the features using an easy software is one of the BIG advantages of this modchip solution!
WIZARD help for the users: you will simply follow software's instruction step by step, everyone would be able to install and manage the INFECTUS MOD.
When you will be ready to install INFECTUS on a DVD DRIVE 078 XBOX360 FIRMWARE, the software will assist you with a 100% automated extraction of the key and the patch of new firmware.
WIZARD configuration based on XML for an automatical update of last firmwares.
X360 FIRMWARE checksum, the software will tell you if you are actually using the correct firmware (this feature is only available in WIZARD procedure)
HELP section to allow an easy searching of X360 firmwares

The playable version of Sega's After Burner: Black Falcon at GDC left me more than a little underwhelmed. Now that the final game is out, critics seem to have mixed praise for Planet Moon's latest PSP exclusive:
GameDaily (80/100) loves the old-school revival: "The studio captured the old-school feeling of the arcade original while, at the same time, adding enough originality and excitement to make it feel like a cool modern-day action game."
IGN (79/100) enjoyed the game, even with its poor multiplayer options: "Lots of games have tried to bring an arcade feel to their next-generation efforts, but it's rare to see someone nail it like After Burner has."
Electronic Gaming Monthly (47/100) agrees with my quick first-impressions the most: "After Burner sports merely decent graphics while managing to suck all the fun out of a once-great franchise."
While I didn't enjoy my time with the game, the critics at GameDaily and IGN seem to have enjoyed the arcadey feel of After Burner. Maybe it's one of those games you learn to love? The game is out now.

YourPSP's official PSP Store is Europe's premiere destination for PSP downloads. It's provided us with a great number of downloadable demos and other goodies. However, it looks to be getting an overhaul. What new upgrades might the site be receiving? Full downloadable games, if this page from the UK PlayStation site is to be believed.
To the right of the page, links to downloadable demos of Loco Roco, Killzone and Ridge Racer 2 can be found. But more interesting are the descriptions for Wipeout: Pure and Go! Sudoku: "Download full game now."
Sony has promised that the PLAYSTATION Store would one day find its way to PSP. As they've shown with the PS3, full downloadable games are a crucial part of Sony's strategy. Could Europe be the first region to receive downloadable retail games? If so, how will it work? When will it expand to other countries? Was the web version of the PLAYSTATION Store the beginning of something bigger? Stay tuned for more.

It's really closer to three. David Jaffe's insanely hyped downloadable game, Calling All Cars, was supposed to hit the PS-Store right around the launch of the European PS3. Obviously, that is no longer the case, as the title has been pushed back to mid-April. Why? No idea. No word from Sony on it, but we're going to assume it's because there's already a lot coming out at the end of March -- Sony wants Jaffe's game to get as much attention as possible.
While we're on the topic of downloadable games, what is your favorite? We'll include game demos here because, well, sometimes demos can be really, really fun. I've had the most fun with flOw... not myself, but because I enjoy everyone else ask to play it and grin as they awkwardly begin learning the SIXAXIS, then smile softly once they've mastered it.
