Developers are increasingly using the PlayStation 3 (PS3) over Microsoft's Xbox 360 as the primary development platform for games, according to a Sony executive.
"We are now starting to see developers creating games on PS3 and then porting them to other platforms such as EA's Burnout," said PlayStation boss Jack Tretton in an interview with IGN.
"We are seeing tremendous progress from the third-party community in terms of what they are able to do with our development kits."
When developers first create games on PS3, they take advantage of the PS3's unique hardware capabilities, maintains the chief executive, before adding, "you will see some very nice things in 2008 coming from our third party partners in addition to what you will see this holiday".

You know times have changed when the top three spots in Japan's software sales chart are no longer occupied by traditional fare, but rather a miasma of Mario mini-games, a balancercise board and a glorified automotive demo. Gamasutra runs down last week's top ten, highlighting Polyphony Digital's Gran Turismo 5 Prologue which made its debut in third position with approximately 116,000 units sold. Professor Layton bully, Wii Fit, found itself parking off in second position with 124,000 units after having switched places with Mario Party DS and its 180,000 attendees.

This past Tuesday, Sony released the latest Playstation 3 firmware upgrade highlighted by much-coveted Blu-ray Profile 1.1. Rushing to download the firmware isn't of much use until January 1 when the first Profile 1.1 Blu-ray Discs arrive in stores. That is, unless you get one of the discs early. Which is exactly what we did with Resident Evil: Extinction.

Although Sony makes everything from music players to phones to robots to computers to movies, the biggest news of 2007 was made in its gaming and TV lines. Sure, we liked Sony Ericsson W- and K-series' flashy designs and were proud that Vaio PCs joined the increasingly crowded CableCARD home-theater PC market, but nothing topped the PlayStation 3, PSP and Bravia TVs for news coverage or everyday impact. So how did Sony do? Pretty darn well, proving that its learned its lessons from the rootkit massacre of 2005/2006, and that bit of news about exploding batteries.
Overall, they've had a good year. We've seen good product releases from all over the consumer electronics spectrum with no crazy rootkit scandal to speak of. The PlayStation 3 and PSP are finally gaining steam, and the Blu-ray format seems to be doing well for itself. If it weren't for the missteps, Sony would have received an A--but a B+ is nothing to be ashamed of.
Final Grade: B+

In what we can only assume is a public relations blunder, the Sony-backed "HD World" newsletter, designed to promote the Blu-ray format, has revealed a new model of PS3 for Europe.
"In Western Europe by the end of 2008, "Understanding & Solutions" predicts average player prices (as opposed to entry level model pricing), for HD DVD and Blu-ray of $275 and $475 respectively, with the yet-to-be-launched European 80GB PS3 retailing at just over $500."
We got in touch with a Sony Europe spokesperson who stated: "The HD World newsletter is written by external sources, and the report quoted is from independent analysts. There is absolutely no 80GB version of the PS3 planned for Europe in 2008".

News/release from Torch:
MyRadio is an alternate player for the PSP's Internet Radio Player introduced in firmware 3.80 and upwards. It allows you to access your PC media library from your PSP over the WiFi connection, either on your LAN, or even over the Internet!
It is installed under the 3.80 firmware's Internet Radio menu, and hence requires firmware 3.80 to work.
You can browse through your PC media library, and playback MP3 and AAC tracks. It even supports reading M3U playlists.
You can also play online streaming playlists (such as ShoutCast playlists), if you download the PLS file from ShoutCast and put it in your PC media library.
Press the START button to mute/unmute the audio.
Use the arrow buttons on the right to quickly scroll one page at a time.
Press the "G" button on top to launch Google, so that you can browse while listening to music!
You need to have Apache up and running on your computer, along with ActivePerl.
Using other Perl distributions may cause you to have missing packages/modules.
I'm sorry but this is not easy for n00bs to set up, and its really hard to write a step by step guide, when there are so many things that can go wrong. I'll consider making an Easy Installer, but I'm not sure of the legalities of distributing Apache/Perl etc.
This is just a BETA release so please give suggestions and feedback.

News/release from nataku92 :
Well I've decided to create a progress log for Cspsp. Since the last version (1.21), I've made a few minor changes and fixed some bugs (most of them suggested by b0rk from the neoflash forums) to the game, namely:
- limited death indicator to 3 max
- fixed the buying deagle bug
- fixed a small sound issue when firing and strafing
- fixed knife
- made sure money doesn't go down if you already have full ammo
- text on scoreboard is now the name of the map instead of "test"
- added ability to enable/disable friendly-fire
- added round timer in spectator mode
- made shotgun fire more straight
I also created a better camera system with smoother movement (like when switching between players in spec mode) and shifted the players view to be more in front of where they're aiming (although I'm not sure I'm going to keep this).
Finally, one of the features I've worked on the most was multiplayer (infrastructure) . I'm using a server-client design like cs where each server is responsible for one game. Online play is still in its very early stages, and I definitely need some help testing it to find the many bugs that I'm sure there are ): .
Anyways, right now I'm running a server on an old laptop on my own network, so you're free to test out online play, although there probably won't be other players on at the same time. Oh, and I live in L.A. and I've got a normal cable connection, so there might be some major lag if you live farther away. Here's the download link for a test version of cspsp that has multiplayer:
http://www.sendspace.com/file/6enbg8
Just go to Online from the menu and choose your wireless connection, and it should automatically connect to the server.
Comments and any bugs you find are appreciated

A federal judge in Detroit has denied a request by the band The Romantics that publisher Activision immediately prevent their song "What I Like About You" from being used in the Guitar Hero Encore: Rocks the '80s expansion pack.
The lawsuit claims that the cover version used by Activision in the game is too similar to the band's original, harming the Romantics' ability to capitalize on its name.
In a press release issued today, Activision said the judge "indicated that to the extent there were any copyright issues, Activision did exactly what the company was supposed to do in developing the product."
Here's what the recently-anointed Worlds Biggest Publisher had to say about the ruling:
Activision is pleased with the ruling and thinks that the case is without merit. Respect for all artists is an important value of the company and Activision has a long history of supporting artists from a range of entertainment fields," The company believes video games represent a growing opportunity for the music industry to reach new audiences and a strong source of potential license revenue for both bands and music publishers.
The legal proceedings surrounding the song aren't over yet, but this week's ruling allows Activision to safely continue selling the expansion containing the song while the case moves forward.
