MCV understands that Rockstar’s Grand Theft Auto IV will NOT be released in March as expected – and will in fact be held back until the last week in April.
Sources close to the game’s publisher have told MCV that the title’s UK release will miss the Easter period entirely, and will instead go on sale in the final week of Rockstar parent Take 2’s second financial quarter.
That would be in keeping with the company's latest financial statement, which revealed the title would be released in its Q2 period – which runs from February to the end of April.
A Rockstar spokesperson told MCV that the publisher didn’t comment on ‘rumour and speculation’.
If true, the rest of the market will breathe a huge sigh of relief – as they can enjoy the lucrative Easter period without doing battle with one of the biggest releases in recent years.
The news has certainly come as a surprise to the trade. One prominent member of the channel told MCV:
“The last I heard about GTA IV’s release was a couple of months ago, when all the changes were taking place at Take 2’s UK offices. Since then, they’ve gone a bit quiet on what’s going on with GTA IV.
“The way Take 2 work on GTA has always been very secretive. I’d expect some more concrete news from them two or three weeks before release.”

Square Enix has confirmed that PSP updates of both Final Fantasy I and II will be released in Europe on February 8.
The tinkered originals feature updated visuals and character art, new dungeons, 16:9 widescreen support (it would look a bit dodgy on PSP otherwise) and an updated camera view which make things look a bit more modern.
The NES original starts when four young warriors, each possessing a crystal, are summoned to restore the world's harmonious elemental balance. The second game has a malevolent emperor summon monsters from a demonic realm to take over the world.
Those were the days when Square Enix's lead characters didn't look like lady boys, and it's definitely worth checking out if you weren't around in the 1980s.

Coming early next year for Wii and PS2, which says a lot about the audience Sega is targeting with this one, is Sonic Riders: Zero Gravity.
The PR blurb boasts "never-before seen worlds with edge-of-your-seat racing intensity and all-new gravity controlling moves".
We not so sure about "edge-of-your-seat racing" but we do like surprises. Take a look at the 'Wii' movie and below you'll find shots of the PS2 version.

Warhawk game director Dylan Jobe says Incog will continue to make booster packs like Operation: Omega Dawn for as long as there's interest in them.
The booster pack launches tomorrow on PlayStation Network - priced GBP 3.99 / USD 7.99 - introduces five new night-time maps and a KT-424 Combat Dropship.
Asked on the Sony US blog how long Incog would support the game, Jobe said he wasn't sure. "As long as there is a market for it I think we should continue to develop them," he said.
He also said that free ground troop stuff is "in the works", and dropped a couple of other hints about what might be in patch 1.3.
But we're getting ahead of ourselves - patch 1.2 should be live today (it was scheduled for 10am GMT) ahead of tomorrow's Omega Dawn launch, although game servers will be offline until 4pm GMT today for upgrades.
At this point, the support Sony's internal and second party studios continue to inject into existing PS3 titles is becoming something of a trademark of PSN - with Folklore and particularly MotorStorm among the games whose tails have been wagging furiously with downloadable content since release.

Two things stand out in the FlatOut series - insane amounts of destruction and the rag-doll mini games, and these screens show both of those in full effect on the PSP sequel, FlatOut Head On.
It's no wonder it looks good - it's one of the few games lining up to take full advantage of the increased processing power of the PSP running in the new 333Mhz setting (which God of War will also use when it hits the portable).
The finished game promises "nine different game modes, including carnage challenges, full career, destruction derbies, multiplayer party mode and the bone-crunching ragdoll stunt mode". Sounds cool.
Look for it in stores in Q1 2008.

If you're one of those people who likes to leave your PS3 on for it to do some protein folding thing you don't understand, you'll be pleased to know you can now do it to the rough beats of Wu-Tang. Or chirpy chimes of Steps, whichever you prefer.
That's because the Folding@Home Client on your PS3 has been updated with new features, including a handy background music player, so you can play tunes off your hard drive while your PS3 folds... stuff.
Also, if you like leaving your electricity-guzzling PS3 on to fold, but ironically find yourself somewhat concerned about your leccy bill or the environment, you can now set the auto shut-down option.
Just hit the FAH icon on your PS3 to get the latest version, and fold on with your rock on. Or Steps.

Yesterday's PS3 firmware updates packs a nice little surprise Sony didn't mention - it enables PS1 gameplay via Remote Play on your PSP.
Just to clarify, that means that you can play PS1 games that are loaded onto your PS3 hard drive on your PSP via a wireless connection, including via the internet.
Why is this cool? Because you can stuff your PS3 hard drive full of PS1 games and play them wherever you are in the world, via the internet on your portable.
It works with PS1 game discs, too, but you'll obviously need to have loaded the disc into your PS3 before you left the house, unless you have a super game-loading robot at home that can do it for you.
You will need to have updated your PS3 to yesterdays 2.10 firmware first though, and your PSP will need firmware version 3.72 or later (3.80 was also released yesterday).

We're fascinated with the battle against uncanny valley—that point in graphics or robotics where the human likeness isn't quite reached, which in turn repulses the viewer. And while we've seen graphics card makers and robot designers tackling the problem before, for the first time a video game developer claims to have bridged the gap. Quantic Dream is a maker of highly cinematic games and houses one of the most advanced motion capture studios in the world. Here's what they've gone on record to say:
But today, I can officially announce that there is no uncanny valley any more, not in real-time.
The last we've seen of Quantic Dream's upcoming PS3 game Heavy Rain was back at E3 06. Their non-interactive tech demo (screenshot above) was amazing for its time, and the word I received through the grapevine was that they had just weeks to get it done. But this is a BIG claim.

It looks like PSP still has a long wait in store when it comes to seeing Gran Turismo grace its lovely screen.
Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi has explained that, while he's very much working on Gran Turismo Portable, it won't be out till after Gran Turismo 5 releases.
Speaking to Spanish website Meristation, Yamauchi said that GT 5 is currently pencilled in for Christmas 2008, but that it won't be released until everything is perfect.
A PSP version of Gran Turismo 4 was supposed to be around for the handheld's launch in 2005.
In the interview he also reveals that Gran Turismo 5's online component is something that will be worked on for around a year following the game's release. Whether this refers to fine-tuning and/or post-release download content isn't clear.

Sony has made Fortune's annual "101 Dumbest Moments in Business" list not just once, but twice, for 2007.
The company first made the list for its European promotion of God of War II at the foot of the Parthenon.
Guests were invited to pull live snakes from a pit, be fed grapes by topless hostesses, and reach inside the still-warm carcass of a freshly slaughtered goat to eat offal from its stomach.
The company also made the list for using Manchester Cathedral as the setting for a shootout in Resistance: Fall of Man, prompting criticism from the Church of England.
Sony wasn't the only videogame company singled out by Fortune. Microsoft was also listed due to its public relations firm sending a 13-page background dossier about a writer, meant for executives, to the writer himself.

Mass Effect is Xbox 360 exclusive? Nope, not anymore (though technically, still yes). Analyst Michael Pachter has spoken. And when he speaks, mountains move and plans change.
Trust me, Electronic Arts, when they threw out the 300 million [for Bioware and Pandemic]—that is multiplatform—that is not 360 only...It has to [come to PS3], I wouldn't be shocked if Mass Effect 1 came to PlayStation 3.
It's tough to believe that any series (save for Halo) would stay Xbox 360 exclusive in the modern industry. But if Bioware is making a trilogy, then the porting would have to be outsourced...which probably isn't impossible for EA.

Sony America boss Jack Tretton says that developers are beginning to create games primarily on PlayStation 3 and then port them to other formats, reversing the early trend of focusing on Xbox 360 and PC and dealing with PS3 as an afterthought.
"We are now starting to see developers creating games on PS3 and then porting them to other platforms such as EA's Burnout [Paradise]," Tretton said in an IGN interview.
"Developers are telling us that they are starting to create their games on PS3 first and take advantage of the hardware capabilities and then port down to other platforms so we are seeing tremendous progress from the third party community in terms of what they are able to do with our development kits."
If true, that will certainly come as good news to owners of PlayStation 3, who have been forced to endure quite a number of less-than-stellar PS3 ports of existing 360 and PC games over the console's first year on sale.
As we've been documenting in our PS3 and Xbox 360 Face-Off features, some developers are getting it right - most notably Infinity Ward with Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, as witnessed in the most recent roundup - but other titles like The Orange Box and Assassin's Creed have suffered on Sony's platform.
"You will see some very nice things in 2008 coming from our third party partners in addition to what you will see this holiday," Tretton concluded in his comments to IGN on the subject.

You can finally abandon the minefield of third-party media applications for PSP, because the official media manager is now free to download.
Sony at last acknowledges that you need to do a fair amount of data manipulation to get the most out of your PSP, and you shouldn't have to pay for it. You can now grab the official media manager from the Japanese website.
Installation is in Japanese, but it's a simple case of hitting the "hai" buttons until it's all done, after which the program, according to Kotaku, runs in English. PSPron on!

After the release of 3.80, with the very welcome feature of an Internet Radio Player on the PSP, we all put an eye on it, including the hackers. FreePlay has made a hack that will let us play radio from different stations other than Shoutcast.
Steps:
1. Set up a DNS server on your PC. Make radio.psp.dl.playstation. net point to your PC's local IP.
2. Set up a web server.
3. Mirror: http://radio.psp.dl.playstation.ne/p...ayer/PLAYER_I/
4. Edit the files however you want.
5. Set up a network connection using your PC's local IP as the primary DNS server.
Video
Have fun doing this!

It's been a long time since the last release of PSP Earth was released! And what with it being Christmas soon, im thinking i could release a Christmas release of PSP earth, but to be quite frankly, what is the bloody point?
It will most probably be code name "PSP Earth 0.8"
I need some suggestions on what will make the portal much better and make it less boring, like other things, possibly not related to webcam streams?
As you can guess, me being one of the most disorganised people on this website, will need time to make this, maybe 3-4 days, and christmas is a week today, so feedback would be very helpful so i know what the public think!
If i dont get any feedback, then PSP Earth will most defintly be scrapped, as i was almost certain PSP Earth has died and had it's day, but if anyone has any ideas to save PSP Earth you will be my god!
Thanks!

Remember the rumored PS3 update complete with DivX support? It's been released! However, with regards to DivX files, there's a couple of snags:
- The DivX files cannot be over 2.00 GB
- You cannot play copyrighted DivX files
At first glance you may think "OMG THAT SUCKS" - but most DivX files aren't copy protected. As for the 2.00 GB limit - If you do have a file over that, why not chop it up into pieces
But wait there's more! In a unexpected move, Sony has pulled another rabbit out of the hat - WMV support! Along with Blu-ray profile 1.1, and a voice changing function, this looks to be a nice update
Full change log below:
Voice Changer feature:
- You can change the tone of a voice that is input from an audio device such as a microphone. High and low-pitched tones can each be adjusted to five preset levels. You can vary the tone when using voice / video chat under Friends.
Music
- You can now select [Type 3] as an option under Settings > [Music Settings] > [Bitmapping]. This bitmapping process was developed specifically for the PS3 system to enhance audio playback.
Video
- DivX and VC-1 (WMV) have been added to the types of files that can be played.
- Blu-ray Disc Profile 1.1 is now supported.
- [BD Data Utility] has been added.
The update is available (as always) through network update, or a link to the download HERE
Edit: Other (undocumented) changes:
[list][*]Video previews now play when sorted into folders.[*]The background/wave is visible behind the web bowser.[*]A new music visualizer has been added.[*]PSone titles [disc and download] are now playable through remote play. [PSP 3.80 update may be required, although there have been reports of it working with 3.72, or 3.71 M33 with the 3.72 premo plugin.]

The Remote Play functionality on the PS3/PSP is great, but Sony intends to extensively develop the feature set for broader external connectivity. Sony's CEO, Sir Howard Stringer, appeared in Tokyo and detailed how Sony intends to push the ever-booming success of the PS3. It is Sony's vision that the PS3 will eventually be able to link up to mobile phones, streaming all kind of media goodness on the go. As you can imagine, the very prospect has our PSP phone speculation senses running into overdrive.
