The "otheros" option has provided a great opportunity for the homebrew development community to develop and innovate with the PS3. Over the last few months a few people that use our forums have been investigating using the 3D aspects of the PS3 GPU. It's a very powerful element of the PS3, so naturally people want to use it. In the last firmware update (version 2.10), the ability to access the 3D graphics has been modified. The method our users have been using has been removed. It is not currently clear if Sony is intentionally removing access to 3D aspects for "otheros" users. Can we get an official statement on whether Sony is intentionally blocking 3D access?
The main reason for this post is that I am concerned that it is Sony's intention to block access to the 3D aspects of the GPU entirely. I believe this is extremely short sighted. The level of access provided by the firmware prior to 2.10 has been accepted and understood by developers. By blocking access to 3D aspects of the GPU, Sony will encourage developers to find exploits that bypass the hypervisor security. These exploits once found may lead the way for further bypassing of security mechanisms. I understand that Sony might want to keep access to the 3D aspects of the hardware for exclusive use by PS3 commercial games. However, what is the danger of allowing homebrew developers access this hardware? Is Sony concerned a developer will create a great homebrew game and sell it through a different channel? The market for "otheros" developers is so tiny that it would not be worth while. It would actually be an opportunity for Sony to potentially pick up and improve some small games ready for the Playstation Network. The reasons to allow access are numerous. Developers will create a better experience when using Linux, create great demos that explore the hardware?s capabilities and maybe create some basic games. None of these things are threatening to Sony's core business.
Another reason for this post is that I believe it will be beneficial to have a contact point with Sony so that we can understand what aspects of the hypervisor Sony does not want investigated. Discussing these will help me and other moderators develop the right forums rules for the PS3. I believe that by having some communication between "otheros" developers and Sony will ensure that the facility is used for what was intended; to create a thriving innovative knowledgeable community.

Developers are increasingly using the PlayStation 3 (PS3) over Microsoft's Xbox 360 as the primary development platform for games, according to a Sony executive.
"We are now starting to see developers creating games on PS3 and then porting them to other platforms such as EA's Burnout," said PlayStation boss Jack Tretton in an interview with IGN.
"We are seeing tremendous progress from the third-party community in terms of what they are able to do with our development kits."
When developers first create games on PS3, they take advantage of the PS3's unique hardware capabilities, maintains the chief executive, before adding, "you will see some very nice things in 2008 coming from our third party partners in addition to what you will see this holiday".

An interesting bit of news posted by Mathieulh
While working on the future 3.80M33, we found a VERY interesting string in the IPL's playload: "/kd/pspbtcnf_03g.bin"
For those who do not understand here is a bit of history:
since 2.71 and especially in 2.80, we could see a string refering to pspbtcnf_02g which suggested the support of a new hardware or at least of a new operative mode. Later with the slim release we found out that the slim's codename was this infamous 02g (proably standing for second generation) and that it used the _02g modules as well as pspbtcnf_02g
.bin. It means that they worked on slim firmware/kernel for months before the actual hardware was announced/released.
We believe it is the same with the 3rd generation hardware which they are now preparing for sure. Will it be yet another lighter (and pandora proof) psp or will it be the new psp phone ? Time will tell
Interesting thoughts from one of the premier PSP Hackers.

Long time Japanese PC exclusive developer/publisher Nihon Falcom is switching camps next year, and its first title is for the PSP. The maker of Ys and The Legend of Heroes announced today Vantage Master Portable, a PSP entry in the PC strategy series that has been around since the late 90s.
Only a few details were revealed on the game today. VM Portable will support multiplayer, allowing players to gather together to hunt monsters. Fans of Falcom's Legend of Heroes series, which has appeared in multiple installments on the PSP, can look forward to a couple of cameos from that series in the form of playable characters.
Aside from that, we've got one promotional image showing a tiny image of what the game may look like running on the PSP.

Choice2 is a updated version of slimChoice and may can't say 100% yet I may have umd backup to ms option, if I do put it in I will not discuss that option at all here as we can't talk about that subject
USB support may be droped but may appear again on a lator update

News/release from Grafele
Hi,
The recently founded development team PSPfreak.de DEV TEAM brings Fall Ball with his 3rd Release. The game is now in v.1.0 and is already out of the beta stage. More specifically, we owe the programmer Tokyo Drift and the designer Mouflon (not included in the team but is asked to drain). It is a matter of a sphere which drops down from taking on a number of levels appear to drop from the top and the pitch to bear. Express difficult but easy to understand: steer the ball into the gaps in the barrier in order not to take up too.

ccpspita has released a new version of his software for his robotics project on PSP
Heres the release details:
MyEye includes Artificial Vision using Intel Open Source Computer Vision Library.
With PCA ("Principal Component Analysis") for face detection, now also with SIFT (Scale Invariant Features)
for features detection on images.
Here are some instructions to use SIFT for recognizing known features in a background.
The folder ms0:\PSP\GAME\MyPSPv4.4.3\WorkArea\SIFT is the work area of files used and produced by SIFT.
On first time, it is not possible to run "OpenCV SIFT Matching" because before it is required to have
a background image already stored.
So, let follows:
STEP 1:
Before running "OpenCV SIFT matching" it's required "OpenCV SIFT Features": for example run it when displayed
a table with some objects on it and press CROSS after having selected the menu option
"OPENCV SIFT Features".
Let wait some time and when finished you'll see the image with some pink lines, arrows, points: that are the detected
and stored features.
STEP 2:
Since now on, you can run "OpenCV SIFT Matching": a new picture is compared with the stored background
and if the same objects or features are detected they are shown with a double picture and lines from one to the other one.
RTRIGGER to go back to MyEye Menu.

Updated release from shaolan:
DAPES is a drawing which I hope in the final version will be the most advanced of its kind utilities on PSP.
Encoded in LUA, its first version tends to Paint, and the updates should enable it to move gradually towards Photofiltre.

News from Auraomega:
Hi all, this is a project I've been working on for quite a while, I aim to release on Christmas Eve, just thought I'd let everyone who hasn't seen anything to do with this yet to take a look at a recording.
Just to clear up some confusion, this is written to flash0, and does edit firmware files, its not just a simple boot up from the memory stick.
Video ->
In the 1st clip it shows the installation. Once its finished installing the PSP must be manually shut down. Upon startup the Project4 splashscreen is shown, and all images are loaded.
In the 2nd clip an alternative theme is flashed, this can be done by anyone using anything, not just the specific ones in this video.
The 3rd clip shows that plugins aimed for the XMB still generally work in Project4, and I have shown (accidentaly may I add) that SCEP can be loaded still.
Please bare in mind that this is only a Proof of Concept, and in no way is a complete application, its purely here to show what has been made, and as an insentive to get other programmers working in the flash more.
More information plus *clear* screenshots can be found on my forums -> http://www.darkmessiah.byethost1 3.com/forums
Any constructive feedback is welcome.

Analyst heavyweight Michael Patcher as at his crystal ball again, this time dishing out the controversial prediction that Epic's Gears of War series will come to PlayStation 3... eventually.
Speaking to Game Trailers, Patcher pointed out that Epic is no stranger when it comes to the PlayStation 3 hardware, "we pretty much know that Gears of War 3 is probably gonna' come out on PS3."
The reasoning behind Mr. P's prediction is that Microsoft probably has a two game deal to keep the first inevitable Gears of War sequel Xbox 360 exclusive, but after that Epic's free to put it on whichever console it likes.
It'd be a big stir up if Gears 2 ended up on PS3, but will anyone really care by the time the third one comes out?
Just like GTA and Resident Evil before, we reckon Gears would've spent most of its worth by the time it goes multiplatform.

Sony is getting all festive this weekend with a new Folklore download pack that will add festive touches to the otherwise dark and sinister game, as well as a new quest for Keats.
The new pack gets you Christmas outfits for the two loading characters, Keats and Ellen, who don't look particularly happy about it in the art pictured below. They both clearly hate Christmas.
Keats gets a new quest for you to battle through, relevantly named 'Holy Night Visitor', and a new Lore creature, named Grab Bag, has also been added. It's a present with teeth, who rather peculiarly attacks by "spreading holiday cheer", according to Sony.
The new content will be available this weekend on the US PSN (we're awaiting confirmation on the UK side), but it'll be free so if you have a US PSN account on your UK PS3 (make one now if not), you'll be able to download it just fine.
"This is a thank you from the developers at Game Republic and from us at SCEA for all you Folklore supporters out there. Be on the look out for more great Folklore content in 2008," says Eric Fong, associate producer of Folklore.

A small glitch in the matrix yesterday saw the newly-released Warhawk Omega Dawn Booster Pack go for free on the new in-game DLC store.
Warhawk was yesterday updated to version 1.2 which, among other things, added a new in-game store for streamlining the download process with new content. But for a limited time, an error caused the European store to price the new expansion pack at ÂŁ0.00. Score!
But, like every time you hear stories of shops like Argos selling 360s for ÂŁ2.79, the error has been fixed before the downloading sprees could commence, and it now dons the proper ÂŁ3.99 price tag.
On a more positive note, Warhawk director Dylan Jobe has promised loads more DLC in the New Year, should demand be there, and also hints at Home support in talks with excited official forum users.
"If I talk too much about it right now a PR ninja will kill me in my sleep," says Jobe about Home support, holding off revealing any specific details.

Almost exactly a month after we first heard about it (it's as if they have some sort of schedule), Ubisoft has popped up with more details of Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six Vegas 2. Did you know it has 13 new multiplayer maps? You do now. Unless you're not paying attention.
Due out in March on Xbox 360, PS3 and PC, Vegas 2 also adds two new adversarial multiplayer modes, more rewards and improved matchmaking to its online elements. Integration with single-player sounds better too - your customised character can be used across both elements, with progress following you too, and the single-player game has been designed "with co-op in mind", allowing for drop-in co-op, and with multiple entry points for each level, none of which should distort the game's story.
That concerns "the last chance for gamers to rescue America's sexiest city from an escalating terrorist siege", according to Ubisoft, and the terrorists have been hitting the books (probably Clancy's) since game 1, bringing in thermal and night vision equipment, shields, and more tactical nouse. But then you have 11 new weapons to choose from, new camo, clothing and gear, so you should be a match.
On top of that, there are more bits of Vegas to explore, obviously, so neither of you has it particularly comfortably.
Along with the above details, Ubisoft also slung us two new screenshots and a teaser trailer to whet your appetite for the good fight. Let us know what you think about them by pointing your crosshairs at the speak-your-brain below

Activision has made it clear that the reason it is blocking the release of a patch to let PS3 owners play Harmonix/MTV's Rock Band with the Guitar Hero III controller it created is because it wants compensation.
"Unfortunately for Rock Band users, Harmonix has been unwilling to discuss an agreement that will allow us to provide that option in a manner that maintains the high standards people have come to expect from Activision," spokesperson Maryanne Lataif told The Boston Globe. "We believe we should be compensated for the use of our technology."
For its part, a Harmonix spokesperson said that it was "really and truly not looking at this from the financial standpoint". "We are looking at this from the consumer standpoint," spokesperson Spencer Saltonstall explained.
Whatever the motives of those involved, the result is that people who bought Rock Band for the PS3 cannot use their existing Guitar Hero III controllers and will not be able to do so until the issue is resolved. This has angered a number of people who have spent lots of money on the basis of promises of support and subsequently the promise of a patch. We spoke to Rock Band PS3 owner Tom Bramwell, who bought the package on import and has also bought a PS3 Guitar Hero III controller, to see what he thinks.
"I think they're all sods," Bramwell explained, handsomely. "The irony is that I only bought the Guitar Hero III PS3 controller so I could use it with Rock Band instead of the Fender Stratocaster bundled with the Harmonix game itself. In other words, I extended my custom with Activision in order to do a thing it is now prohibiting out of a desire to prevent itself losing my custom."

Mathieulh and Dark_AleX have confirmed that work on custom firmware 3.80 M33 has already commenced. There is no set release date at this time, but expect to see a release in the near future.
While working on 3.80 M33, the two found a peculiar string in the IPL’s payload file — pspbtcnf_03g.bin. What does this mean? Well, flashback to a few months ago when a string referring to pspbtcnf_02g.bin was found in firmware 2.71. Once the PSP Slim was finally released, it was discovered that “02g” was none other than a codename for the slim hardware.
Could “03g” be the codename for a third PSP hardware revision? Perhaps for the rumored PSP phone? It’s possible.

Already bored with that CGI trailer for Resident Evil: Degeneration? Yeah, us too ... it's missing a certain something and, you know what? We think we know what that is. Dirt.
Wait, hear us out. As announced at TGS this year, the newly redubbed Final Fantasy Advent Children Complete won't be arriving on Blu-ray undisturbed. Oh no, it's been smeared through the mud, and then scratched by a horde of feral kittens. It's dirty and bloody and, well, we sorta like it. Get a peek at the trailer embedded above and wrestle with the mysteries that keep Cloud's hair so erect, even in this new, dirty revision.
