The slightly delayed Socom Confrontation beta has just extended to US Qore subscribers, which should really put those already-strained servers to the test.
At around 5pm Pacific time (1am over here), subscribers to the US-only Qore package will be able to enter their access codes into PSN and download the beta.
Unfortunately for us Brits, Sony is still to confirm any plans to extend the beta trial to UK, but we've been pestering Sony UK about it and will let you know.
If you're lucky enough to be reading this from the US, check out the PlayStation Blog for details on how to enter your code and get it all up and running.

With Resistance 2 expected to drop into Chimera-occupied Chicago in early November, Ted Price, Insomniac's president and CEO, has come forward to confirm that the game is nearly complete. "The game is just about finished," commented Price in a recent interview with GameSpot, adding that the final three to four week push, dedicated to fine tuning and squashing bugs, is "always the most difficult."
Price also adds that the team has been "loath to cut any corners during development," making simply getting to the finish line with Resistance 2 something of a challenge for the developers. We appreciate the effort, honestly; the last thing we want to worry about when facing down an impossibly huge leviathan is if our game will freeze before we can bring the massive baddie to his equally gargantuan knees.

Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida is disappointed at the lack of third-party support for the PSP.
He pointed to first-party games such as God of War: Chains of Olympus, Buzz! Brain Bender and Resistance Retribution as examples of strong, existing IP that had been manipulated for PSP - something he's disappointed third-parties are not emulating.
"What we'd like to see more is for third-parties also - there is so much great IP that they have," Yoshida told IGN.
"It's really, really disappointing, and it's a lost opportunity for the third-parties. They should look at what the PSP can do for their titles and the potential for the business that their IP has."
Yoshida promised Sony has "many more" unannounced PSP games planned for next year, and said leading by example was the best way to get third-parties involved.
Capcom's Japanese Monster Hunter phenomena was used as an example, whereby developers and publishers could visibly see groups of friends playing the game in public places.
Perhaps the PSP-3000, with its brighter, more colourful screen, will prompt more activity when it launches here in mid-October.
The first PSP-3000 bundle will arrive in the UK on 17th October and cost GBP 149.99. Contents, bizarrely, are yet to be confirmed.

And here we were thinking people had lost interest in Star Wars games. And here you are, proving that even the most mistreated fans will flock back to George Lucas' wrinkled, cash-soaked bosom (or at least have a quick test suckle). Lucasarts announced yesterday that over a million people have downloaded the Force Unleashed demo for the 360, a figure that apparently set a new speed record for the console (fastest to 1 million downloads, which it hit in eight days). Over 1.3 million people downloaded the demo on the PS3. That gives us a grand total of 2.3 million downloads. For a week and a half, that's a lot. Course, it'll all be for naught if you all thought the game was a bit shit and don't buy it, but hey, we're talking the past here, not the future.

News/release from Wicked Fable
It is time for a modern step forward of Pong.

Have you been looking for a fully featured Pong homebrew game with full customization capabilities, unique twists in the game modes, and a decidedly modern feel? Have no fear! pong.MODERN is here!
Please check out the readme included in the download for very detailed information regarding the game.
I just got finished with the game literally less than an hour ago after a day's worth of coding(starting from 8:00 AM yesterday to 12:00 PM today). Originally the game was to use the new Lua HM Homemister had finished up and he was helping me to convert it so that it would be compatible with Lua HM and so that the game could run better. Sadly he never got the translated files to me yesterday so I had to use LuaPlayer HM 6.6. The game still runs very smoothly it is simply that you'll notice slow downs in places like the credits or the lack of music in pong.DINOSAUR which had to be disabled. Also, the game originally had Splash FX for the RetroEmu banner but the files are with Homemister so I have not gotten them as well. I hope you still enjoy the game as I tried very hard to make it fun for everyone. Ha, hope this is retro enough for the competition,
Please enjoy the game. It is time for me to get some sleep.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this game,

One of the most unexpected developments from digital distribution is the rise of Gameloft. The mobile phone game company has a single Xbox 360 game and a seemingly endless stream of WiiWare games. It looks like Gameloft’s next stop is the PlayStation Network. The USK, Germany’s ESRB equivalent, rated Brain Challenge as a PlayStation 3 and PSP game. A console port of Brain Challenge was released on Xbox Live Arcade earlier this year.
Whether you love or loathe Gameloft’s mobile phone upgrades Gameloft is growing.

News/release from Nielkie:
Another one of my semi-old projects (Not quite as polished as my last release)
This is an unofficial clone of JetSlalom by MR-C for the PSP. (With a StarFox twist)
Play the original here: ww2.freearcade.com/Jetslalom.jav/Jetslalom.html
This release uses no code or resources from the original game.
Install:
Copy the StarSlalom folder to PSP/GAME or PSP/GAME150 on your PSP.
Notes:
Since this still uses the old luaplayer 0.16 for speed, it requires the 1.5 kernel. If you want, you could try running it with a modded luaplayer, but it might not run full-speed.
The code is a bit weirdly designed, I don't really know what I was thinking at the time.
You can use whatever you want from the code for whatever you want, but I would appreciate you not bytecoding it and giving me a shout as to what it will be used for.

PedroJ has released a new version of the Satfinder app for the PSP:
Heres whats new:
My homebrew is about astronomy, it is a program which lets you find artificial satellites above in the sky. It tells you when you are going to be able to see them with naked eyes. It is centered on the ISS (International Space Station), which id the brightest satellite on the sky. If your hobby is seeing the stars, this is your homebrew. You can learn constellations, a lot of details about the sun and the moon, etc.
-Luaplayer changed. Now is used HW7 RC1
-Corrected an small error when showing coordinates in the Information Screen.
-Corrected an infinite loop when we try to update TLE files using WIFI. Now if you can't find a proper point of access, you are returned to the main screen.
-Moon phases are in UTC time format. A label has been added to avoid confusions.
-Iridium satellites now can be disabled. Added this option in the options screen.

News/release from Archaemic
Despite it being over half a year since the last version of PSPComic, this is a MINOR version upgrade, and likely the last official version of PSPComic. However, if you feel like you can improve it, you can always release your own version due to the fact that it’s released under the GPL. Just make sure to follow the terms! I warn you though, the source is kind of a mess.
Note that this has not been tested with the 4.xx kernel! However, it will probably work.
Changelog:
[Feature] Archives are now detected when opening by contents instead of extension. However, menus are still generated by extension
[Feature] Shift-JIS support for filenames when the PSP’s character set is set to Shift-JIS
[Feature] Zoom box colors can now be customized in themes, as well as error text color
[Bugfix] Fixed a RAR loading bug
[Bugfix] No more weird behavior on resume or when the memory stick is removed, however the program will claim that no memory stick is inserted for a small period of time after the program is resumed
[Bugfix] Fixed file handle leak in directory reading
And many more minor changes…

Sony has decided to turn popular quiz show Jeopardy! into PSN game, which should be available today on the PS3 Store.
Word comes by way of the US PlayStation blog, which means European whereabouts are shakey. Nothing on the Store so far.
Jeopardy! has been running for around 25 years, and has provided the Buzz! series with more than a liberal dose of inspiration. The core idea is that contestants must pick answers and then guess the questions to them.
SOE Los Angeles, which makes PC and mobile versions of the quiz show, is behind the adaptation. Multiple choice answers have been added, controversially, but only flash up after you buzz in and stake some money on delivering the correct response.
There are around 2500 questions, online and offline multiplayer for four of you, plus expansion pack plans for 2009. There's no word on the price, though.

Sony has announced that WipEout HD will cost GBP 11.99 when it launches, but the release date has yet to be confirmed.
WipEout HD is 60 frames-per-second, 1080p downloadable PS3 take on the classic futuristic racing series, featuring tracks borrowed from the excellent PSP duo, WipEout Pure and Pulse.
The game was held up recently by a specific technical problem - believed to be a failed safety test for epilepsy.
However, Sony went on to deny that, claiming the real reason for the delay was to add new features like Trophy support, eight reverse tracks, four extra tracks and two-player split-screen.
Whatever the reality, you can expect to read our review of the finished game very soon, and can check out our WipEout HD hands-on preview in the meantime.
