Today we received boxed retail copies of Mirror's Edge in the office. Our full review of the game is embargoed for a couple weeks, but that didn't stop us from rifling through the included manual and an interesting sell sheet. Said sheet has an ad for Need for Speed Undercover on one side, and Skate 2 on the other. In the bottom-left corner of the Skate 2 ad is a little tag that not so subtly says "In Stores January 2009". It doesn't get any more official than that.
We talked to EA about the matter, and the timing is indeed set, though we don't have a specific date as of yet. But at least we now know we'll be revisiting San Vanelona in less than 90 days.

You know those complaints about the ugly, old-school looking interlacing lines that many (ourselves included) have reported seeing on the new PSP-3000? The specific issue has been uncovered -- but not by Sony. A group of concerned French gamers with a 40x microscope think it all comes down to that most mellow of colors: blue. LCDs are comprised of RGB pixels that, combined, form all the rainbow of hues in between.
As you can see in the picture above, the PSP-2000's LCD (left) used pixels in a vertical orientation, and the blue pixels were fairly light in color. On the PSP-3000 (right), the pixels are now arranged horizontally, and the blue ones are far darker than before. The dark horizontal lines result in the heinous interlacing, an effect that any Command & Conquer player will tell you wasn't even cool in the 90's. Sony's already called this a "feature" and not a flaw, so if you absolutely must buy a PSP this holiday season the folks at Logic-Sunrise who took the above pics recommend you buy an older 2000-series -- while you still can.

The hardest thing about picking a presidential candidate is that you can't test them first. You can't see how they'd actually handle real presidential duties, like attempting to balance the federal budget, representing the citizenry abroad and punching out Venezuelan troops before dropping grenades in their tanks. Thankfully, you'll get the chance to see how presidential candidate Barack Obama and VP nominee Sarah Palin will stack up as they'll soon be added as DLC to Mercenaries 2. You can see the video right after the break.
Why no John McCain, you ask? Man, you don't need a video game to help you imagine what John McCain would be like as a war hero! McCain doesn't call blowing up an attacking helicopter with a rocket launcher an adventure ... he calls it "Tuesday."

In an earnings call yesterday, Electronic Arts revealed that Burnout Paradise had been downloaded over 20,000 times in the first three weeks of launch on the PlayStation Store. "In the future we see slower growth in the basic packaged goods business, and higher margins, greater growth and reduced cyclicality [sic] with these new direct-to-consumer businesses," said CEO John Riccitiello, who added that the company is investing $150 million in digital distribution.
At $30 per download, that amounts to $600,000 for the publisher (and Sony, who undoubtedly gets a share of that). Riccitiello also said that on average, $14.50 has been spent per user in The Sims 2 online store. For this fiscal year, EA expects $185 million in online revenue. Burnout Paradise "Party" DLC and Ultimate Box set are coming February 2009.

While my experience with the Xbox 360 version of Bethesda's Fallout 3 was rather pleasant, PlayStation 3 owners don't seem to be getting on nearly as well. Complaints of choppy frame rates and graphical glitches are peppered throughout Bethesda's forums for the game, with others complaining about random lock ups and various other issues - textures not loading, significant slowdown etc. Two major bugs have already been addressed by Bethesda in the forums, one concerning the game freezing during the GOAT test earlier in the game, and another dealing with the game pausing whenever a PS3 notification occurs. The first issue can apparently be solved by saving and restarting, while they suggest turning off notifications in the XMB for the second.
We've contacted Bethesda regarding these issues, specifically inquiring as to the possibility of a patch to fix problem with the PS3 version.

Developer Media Molecule will be offering free Halloween (pumpkin) Mask and Launch Spacesuit costumes for LittleBigPlanet next week.
These are to celebrate both the spooky season and launch of the dimple-cheeked PlayStation 3 game, according to the US PlayStation blog, and will be available from 6th November to 19th November
On top of limited and seasonal costumes, LittleBigPlanet will also be treated to free community-created outfits, plus those stitched together by Media Molecule.
The latter, however, will cost; USD 0.99 for bog standard but brilliant outfits, such as lizards or gorillas; USD 1.99 for premium costumes, like the Solid Snake and Sephiroth get-ups; or an unknown amount for super-duper rare items such as the Media Molecule t-shirt. There are pictures of each on the PS blog.
Four basic outfits will often be bundled together for USD 2.99, apparently, while quartets of premium picks will be packed for USD 5.99.
Costumes are but one of the types of downloadable content for LittleBigPlanet; creation materials, gameplay enhancements and, of course, levels will expand the world as time goes on. More on these soon, we're told.
LittleBigPlanet is due for release here next Wednesday 5th November. That's also Bonfire Night, so be careful not to blow up your hands or face, because you'll need those to play the game with.

Easy Spoof V.1 BETA
ONLY for 5.00 M33-3
Easy Spoof is a simple tool that allows you to spoof your firmware version.
Just to be clear what this does: It does NOT actually change your firmware, just the firmware version display in the XMB, under "System Settings/System Information".
NOTE: You must install Easy Spoof to the GAME5XX folder, or it will refuse to start
This is BETA V.1 - I will probably update in the future to allow more than 8 characters to be used in firmware spoofs.
Much thanks to Super Sheep & Matchung who made writing this a million times easier... SONY has now dynamically stored 2 characters in the firmware string within vshctrl.prx, which had me a little confused when i first began to write this... THANKS GUYS !!

EA has confirmed that a demo for Mirror's Edge will go live on the PS Store today, and on Xbox Live Marketplace tomorrow.
The demo to the brilliant-looking free-running sim will contain "the prologue of the game, a tutorial and a segment of the single-player story mode."
Interestingly, as previously reported, those of you who pre-order the game will also get an unlock code for a hidden Time Trial mode within the demo.
"Time Trial is an addictive mode that challenges players to use their speed and best moves to find the fastest routes throughout the city. Gamers can upload their best time to the Mirror's Edge online leaderboards for their friends to download and compete against," explains EA. Sounds cool.
As well as the demo arriving early on PSN, Sony has also secured DLC exclusivity for the PS3.
If you can't get to your PS3 right now, have a look at some gorgeous footage.

Sony's semi-official UK blog, Three Speech, has published a list of first-party PS3 releases dates that puts Resistance 2 in our gun-hungry hands on 28th November.
The Insomniac-penned first-person shooter is out in the States next Tuesday, but until now Sony has been coy about confirming the exact timing for Europe.
The good news for you lot is that it has been less coy about giving us review code, which should enable us to bring you our thoughts around the time of the US release.
Also on Three Speech's release schedule are SingStar Vol. 3 and SingStar ABBA (both 14th November), and LocoRoco 2, which is down for 21st November, albeit to be confirmed.
For more Resistance 2-related fun, check out the Resistance 2 US TV advert we posted this morning. It's got a bit of gameplay in it, in case you haven't already seen it.
Not as much as all the other content on our Resistance 2 gamepage, though, obviously.

Imageepoch, the developers of Luminous Arc 2 and Arc Rise Fantasia, have pretty much stuck with Nintendo hardware. Those games are coming out for the Nintendo DS and Wii respectively. In the future Imageepoch may start working with other platforms. Ryoei Mikage, President of Imageepoch, told us “Next year or next, next year there might be a really cool action PSP game.” That’s interesting because Imageepoch is currently dabbling in the action genre too.

DFC Intelligence president & senior technology analyst Wanda Meloni spoke at the GameON: Finance 2.0 conference in Toronto, weighing in the major console manufacturers' futures. According to a Gamasutra report from the event in Toronto, Meloni believes that Sony may never break even on the PlayStation 3 platform because of the losses incurred on each console sold.
Sony announced its quarterly results earlier today, showing improved PlayStation hardware sales, but ultimately posting a hefty loss.
We're unsure if Meloni was drinking the corporate Kool-Aid, factoring in the 10-year lifecycle Sony has planned for the hardware. Meloni also believes that Sony's slice of the console market share, at 67% during the PlayStation 2 era, will shrink to 50% or below.

LittleBigPlanet began life in this world much like a real baby: helpless. Now, it's learning to crawl. As of the time of this posting, neither Media Molecule nor LBP News Site has offered up an explanation of the 1.03 patch released last night, but Eurogamer's sources say the update was issued to lighten server loads. A peek over at the PlayStation Forums reveals varying user experiences after installing (or not installing) the patch:
basketball14: "i'm not a 100% sure but it looks like it fixed the server b/c i started off with the servers online and that's never [happened] even when the servers were [supposedly] ok"
ACpwnzor: "I'm getting a load of lag -- lame -- [and] it takes a while for an online level to load even when i'm playing only by myself!!"
subherbian: "I've been playing all night and never got the update ... I had zero server or lag problems. Seems to me I didn't even need an update"
DiZee126: "that's weird ... after the update my save file reverted to a previous version or something"
bigdaddykraven: "Well my game has been running great for hours, even before the 1.03 [patch] but now when I go to restart [levels], every now and then it freezes up and I have to hard restart"
"We are aware that the online environment of LittleBigPlanet is having server performance issues, and we are investigating the cause," Sony explained to Eurogamer. "We'll have an update to the online gameplay as soon as we possibly can."

Several months ago, a variety of legitimate publications got word of a PS3 Wiimote-like device that could split in two. We dubbed it the "DualMotion." Today the patent for the DualMotion has been uncovered and while it uses accelerometers and LED-based tracking (similar to the Wiimote), the DualMotion also deploys ultrasonic frequencies to determine absolute xyz position (based upon controller distance from other controllers and your television). Oh, and two DualMotions can assemble to make one big DualMotion. Just check it out in what we believe is the craziest patent diagram ever:

(Please use this forum thread to submit bug reports).

Release Notes:
Here you have it, an all-in-one solution for your Pandora Needs.
This program is designed to prepare your PSP Memory Stick to be used with the Pandora Battery. Unfortunately this program can not change your Battery to Pandora, however it will copy programs to the Memory Stick in order for you to do this yourself.
I hope you enjoy this new release...
WARNING: THIS PROGRAM WILL FORMAT AND INSTALL THE IPL LOADER TO THE DRIVE LETTER YOU SELECT AS YOUR PSP DRIVE, SO MAKE SURE IT IS THE CORRECT DRIVE BEFORE PROCEEDING. I DO NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR FORMATTED USB HARD DRIVES ETC...
What's New:
The compression used in versions 2.4 and 2.5 had problems with 64-bit Operating Systems, so now it has been reverted back to what was used in 2.3 (which had no reported problems).
Hellcat's Recovery Flasher is now updated to v1.41 (which will now Flash 5.00 M33-3), and the latest version of CXMB is updated to v3.3 (which is 5.00 M33 compatible). AutoStart PRX was removed due to no 5.00 M33 support, and replaced with Custom Firmware Extender v3.0.

- A PSP with USB Cable and 1.50 or 3.xx/4.xx/5.xx M33 Custom Firmware Installed. (This is needed for creating the Pandora Battery, not the Memory Stick).
