Sadly there's no blueprint of the PS4's filesystem as far as I know, so how would we know where we want to go? We need to collect as many information about the filesystem and it's environment as possible to even be able to determine our possible research targets and vulnerabilities.
For any PlayStation platform there are 3 good and legit ways to go for:
Way 1: Open Source Software & Open Documentation
Any Open Source Software used on the PlayStation4 is listed at http://www.scei.co.jp/ps4-license/.
A quick look through them reveals that many licenses force SONY to distribute copies of the used software which for the PS4 are:
Since we do have the sources, we can go through em, look for bugs and/or compare public available exploits to see if they are patched; for example via http://www.exploit-db.com/.
Furthermore you can check the World Wide Web for public available documentation about the system, sites like http://develop.scee.net/ are very useful. Just as example you can find the content guidelines for the PS4 Webbrowser and a quite interesting presentation from 2013.
Way 2: Hardware Analysis
Not exactly the stuff I like to do, but one of the most interesting and promising research fields I think.
For sure also the most expensive way to research. If your lucky enough to own or be able to purchase proper hardware for this case of research you have tons of possibilities.
There's already a lot information about PS4 hardware research available in the PS4 Developer Wiki, including some dumps and more.
Even if you do not have access to a fast enough logical analyzer there's cheap & good hardware for simple chip dumps. Also you could checkout other hardware interaction possibilities like UART (115200,n,8,1 in our case).
Way 3: Installed Software Analysis
Check the software on the target system for bugs which may lead to information leaks or similar.
One of the best things which can happen at start is that you find a way for dumping parts of the memory which may reveal sensitive and useful information about the PS4 environment.
A good example is the recently revealed exploit for the Wii U via it's Webbrowser & Webkit which quite early lead to memory dumps. Webkit is known to be a weak point on nearly every system!
The Result
A decent result will unveil you a good overview of how the system works, which processes are linked by each other, how the filesystem does look like and more.
Here's an example for the PlayStation4 filesystem: CLICK TO DOWNLOAD
The shown folders and files are based on our research until now. Some files and folders are missing and may be updated.
Part III of my "The State of Thing" articles will arrive soon!

Yeah I'm still here! A lot of information was collected, analyzed and misused in the past months. I want to share an overview with you and I'll start with "Part I: TitleID's".
This post is not entirely about the PS4, it will include some information about the PSV as well.
Why are we interested in TitleID's?
Both the PS4 and the PSV use the known system of TitleID's to identify games and apps. Most of them are visible to you via either the Livearea on PSV or the menu of the PS4.
Some of them, on the other hand are only used as references for internal modules or similar and are therefore hidden. The most interesting ones are those which are linked with applications you shall not see and are just implemented for tests, were forgotten or exist for other unknown reasons. Do we want to find and start them? Yes, we do!
How do we find valid TitleID's?
Well, the best start is to look at the error reports of the consoles. Once a game or app crashes, a small error report is generated and you can view this information via the systems settings. You'll see that the TitleID is always with it.
 |
NPXS19999 is the TitleID |
Surely this will not lead us to any interesting hidden applications since those are most likely never active and can not be crashed without even knowing how to start them, but it will give us a good startpoint since the range of commonly used system ID's is huge (NPXS00000-NPXS9999). So now we need a way to test for valid ID's aka a possibility to launch games/apps by it's TitleID with bruteforcing.
How do we start apps/games by TitleID's?
PS VITA Method: [UPDATED]
[UPDATE]
For simplicity here's a small webform which will unlock the PKG Installer for your PS VITA: http://www.zload.net/pkg/ kindly hosted by The Zett. Just enter the E-Mail adress you use on your PSV and the script will send you the unlock E-Mail.
[/UPDATE]
On PlayStation VITA there are many ways to achieve our goal, so it's not important right now if one is public. I will show you the most simple one. Probably you have noticed the leak of information regarding a hidden PKG installer a few months ago - this was achieved by using this technique.
Simply as it is, the only thing you have to do is setup the E-Mail client application on your PlayStation VITA and write yourself an HTML E-Mail with the following content to receive the E-Mail on your PSV.
< a href="psgm pen?titleid=NPXS10031">OPEN PKG INSTALLER</a>
Open your E-Mail app and click the link and the PKG installer will start. You may want to replace the titleid parameter with any of your choice. I have a small list of tested TitleID's for PSV right here, feel free to add or modify information.
PS4 Method:
For the PlayStation 4 our method is a bit more complicated and requires a bit of RE knowledge for Android and/or iOS. I'll describe an example for Android:
Please grab a copy of the Metal Gear Solid V: GZ companion app for Android and save the APK on your PC. APK Downloader is useful here! ( It's a fantastic game, I'm rly sorry I had to use this one )
Now you'll need the APK-Multi-Tool. Setup the tool and place the MGS companion APK file in the "place-apk-here-for-modding" folder. Start the tool, via the "Script.bat" and choose option 9 to decompile the APK. You now have a decompiled copy of the APK in your "projects" folder.
Locate the "PS4Net$1.smali" source file in "/smali/jp/konami/mgsvgzapp/", open it and replace the MGS V: GZ TitleID's with one of your choice and save the file. Go back to the APK-Multi-Tool script and choose option 15 (assuming your Android phone connected in debugger mode).
Now you can start the app on your phone, choose the main option and it will find your PS4 after you logged in PSN. Once started, normally the application would start Metal Gear Solid V: GZ, but now tries to start your TitleID if available.
The authentication system used for the secure communication between your phone and your PS4 is well done, but sadly not useful if we use a modification like this. Feel free to join the list of tested TitleID's for PS4.
For obvious reasons I made a small TitleID's launcher to test different ID's a lot faster.
XBOX ONE Method:
In the APK described in the PS4 method you might have noticed that there is code for the XBOX ONE version of the game as well. Nearly same system, have fun.
Stay tuned for Part II!
Best regards,
- SKFU

Due to the massive release, leak – call it whatever you want – we are unable to release the supposed to be upcoming firmware 3.30 VHBL game. it was Patapon 1 and it had a really really good VHBL compatibility, the best since years (for the PS Vita).
Well, that is now useless, due to TN-V being available at 3.18 and Patapon 1 being fixed on higher firmwares.
Not only Patapon 1 but …
… also Patapon 2 and the Patapon 2 demo can be exploited, if you happen to have those currently installed.
There was a one-day window for being able to get the Patapon 2 demo onto your PS Vita, that was a few months ago, as the “blacklist” for the download list of the PSN was disabled, which enabled you to download any PSP/PS1 content onto your PS Vita.
It is currently impossible to install the Patapon 2 demo onto your PS Vita, regardless of any kind of PS3 or Package Installer connection. You can not install the demo!
So simply buy Patapon 1 or Patapon 2, follow the video and enjoy the TN-V eCFW at firmware 3.18.
This might be the last exploit release for a lot of months, if not years.
Download: 3.18 TN-V10 for Patapon 2 (EU files)

NES/GBA/GB/Lynx/PC Engine/PC-FX/Wonderswan/Genesis/SNES/VirtualBoy/PS1 emulator has been updated recently. Changes:
- Fixed a piece of ancient mouse button mapping/reading code that was so broken it worked most of the time; fixes broken mapping of more exotic(other than left, center, and right) physical mouse buttons to virtual buttons.
- Lynx: Fixed a minor stereo sound emulation issue thanks to a patch from "sage".
- Lynx: Fixed a bug that could cause Mednafen to crash when a game attempts to power-down the emulated Lynx(which may occur if a game is left unattended for a prolonged period of time).
- WonderSwan, PC-FX, MD, NGP: Fixed several violations of C/C++ sequence point rules in relation to call order in expressions of functions with side effects, that could lead to undefined/wrong behavior with certain types of compiler optimizations and features(e.g. PC-FX emulation was broken on gcc 4.9.x with -fsanitize=undefined -std=gnu++11).

There’s no sign of Xbox One closing the gap on PS4 in the US next-gen console sales race.
Sony’s machine once again outsold its rival in August – that’s the eighth month in a row.
"PlayStation 4 was number one in hardware sales for the eighth consecutive month and remains the cumulative leader for next generation game consoles," Sony’s American senior marketing VP Guy Longworth said. "For the third consecutive month, PlayStation [PS4 and PS3] was number one in combined home console hardware sales."
He added that Diablo III: Reaper of Souls sold more on PS4 than Xbox One and that The Last of Us: Remastered was the month’s best-selling first party title.
None of which stopped overall US software sales declining year-on-year, with consumers abandoning last-gen consoles in their droves.
"Deep declines in seventh generation software (Xbox 360/PS3/Wii) of 57 percent were not offset by growth in eighth generation software, leading to a net decrease of console software sales of $47m [22 per cent]," NPD Group analyst Liam Callahan said.
Madded NFL 25 was the month’s best-selling game.
The US hardware market, however, grew 116 per cent year-on-year with PS4 and Xbox One accounting for 70 per cent of the market – a record high for both machines.
In fact, ten months after their release next-gen consoles are tracking 70 per cent up on the first ten month’s sales of PS3 and Xbox 360.

When PlayStation Plus was announced in 2010, it was difficult to understand why PlayStation 3 owners would feel motivated to pay for a premium tier to the service they had been enjoying for free. Four years later, the Instant Game Collection has provided plenty of incentive to pony up the annual PlayStation Plus fee, thanks largely to how the team behind the Collection decides what games are made available.
"There is a lot that goes into finding the right mix of titles for each month's Instant Game Collection, but the goal is to deliver a solid lineup that has something for all different types of gamers," John Koller, vice president of platforms marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment of America told Joystiq.
Koller says a major goal in determining the PlayStation Plus lineup is to retain current subscribers and grow new subscriptions through making the service a "no brainer" for owners of PlayStation platforms.
"We look at a variety of different things to deliver a lineup that will provide amazing shared experiences, including the most popular genres for our members and fan requests."

Sony is closing off PlayStation Network access for its PlayStation Portable console in multiple regions starting this week, IGN reports.
A Sony representative told IGN that the shutdown affects PSP owners in Europe, Asia, Oceania, and select regions in Africa. North American PSPs will still be able to access the PlayStation Network while Sony "evaluates market trends" to determine if it should expand its service shutdown plans.
While affected regions will be unable to directly access the PlayStation Network from PSP hardware starting on September 15, Sony notes that users will still be able to buy PSN marketplace content and redownload previous purchases via the Sony Entertainment Network Online Store. Sony halted PSP production in Japan in June, and discontinued North American hardware shipments in January.

According to the report, the console is being crafted by Italian jeweller Gatti and will initially be available for purchase at the ongoing Games14 conference in Dubai. If you're interested in scoring one of these gaudy gaming machines, you'd better bring your wallet: While the tech specs of these special consoles match their plastic counterparts, each machine features a price tag of 50,000 UAE Dirhams - about $13,612 here in the United States.
"We are particularly excited to be launching the most unique and valuable gaming consoles in the world at Games14, specially created by Gatti," Jumbo Electronics head Nadeem Khanzadah told Emirates 24/7. "Available to both Xbox and PS4 fans, the high-end materials and exquisite detailing of the gold consoles make it a great collectible item for gamers who love luxury."

Despite a history of middling sales figures, Sony claims they aren't giving up on the PlayStation Vita.
Speaking to Eurogamer this week, Sony UK chief Fergal Gara described it as having "found its niche" as a device more suited to smaller games and cross-platform ports than AAA-style efforts such as Uncharted: Golden Abyss.
"For those who want that more specialist device and a more specialist experience, it does a damn good job, and therefore it trucks along quite nicely," Gara said, adding that sales are now "robust and consistent".
He also pointed to its growing appeal among younger gamers.
Sony will be looking for a substantial boost in coming months with the release of Minecraft and a FIFA 15 bundle, with Gara describing the former as "the biggest and potentially most powerful release of the year" for the Vita.

Sony UK boss claims it is now the fastest-selling, "core gamer machine"

Sony Computer Entertainment is a Japanese videogame company specialising in a variety of areas in the...
playstation.com
Sony's PlayStation 4 has now sold 1 million units in the UK, making it the second fastest-selling console in the country's history.
The milestone was revealed to Eurogamer by Sony's UK boss, Fergal Gara, who also received official data from Chart-Track to reach that figure. Gara admitted that the Nintendo Wii achieved the feat, "ever so slightly faster," than the PS4, taking 38 weeks.
"But it's the fastest versus any PlayStation or Xbox - so any core gamer machine," Gara added.
Gara also seemed confident that Sony will be able to meet consumer demand this Christmas, which wasn't the case a year ago.
"We started with a forecast. We saw pre-orders coming through. We increased the forecast. We got most of that volume but not enough, and the demand just kept going. It was only April when we started to catch the demand. So in short, way ahead. I'm expecting both a very strong sales Christmas and healthy volumes this Christmas. I don't anticipate any consumer problems."
