Sony would, of course, like you to see its PlayStation Plus service as a bargain, but how much value does it really add to your gaming life? Well, according to data compiled by UK publication Push Square, quite a lot, actually. After combing through the 2014 selection of games offered as part of the service's Instant Game Collection, Push Square reports that Sony offered $1,349.29 worth of games in North America, and £960.64 worth of games in Europe.
Now, there are some caveats to this data. While the games themselves are free to add to your collection and free to play while you have a current PS Plus subscription ($50 for a year in the US), once your subscription lapses you'll lose access to said games. Push Square's numbers also do not separate games by system, so you only got the full, $1,349.29 value of games if you owned a PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4, and a PlayStation Vita.
Still, considering that the average monthly Metacritic score (factoring in all games) was 79 for the US and 78 in Europe, as well as the fact that PS Plus also grants subscribers access to discounts, giveaways, Share Play and online multiplayer on PS4, it's not a bad deal. And that's how you (possibly) saved more than $1,200 in 12 months on your game collection.

It's 10:30am on a cold Wednesday morning. A small crowd gathers outside an unassuming grey shop in the middle of Bethnal Green Road, London. Four multi-coloured neon symbols suddenly come into view -- it's 1994 all over again and I'm suddenly feeling nostalgic.
It's been hard to miss, but it's been two decades since the OG PlayStation went on sale. To celebrate, Sony's returned to its retro roots, and the gaming public are loving it. It started with the unveiling of the 20th Anniversary Limited Edition PS4, which sold out in minutes in the US, moving on to a retro-inspired theme for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3 and PS Vita owners. To mark the console's UK launch, it's opened this new pop-up PlayStation store in Central London.

"Sorry we're late!" Sony's Playstation 4 and Vita will enter China's marketplace on January 11th, 2015, over three months after the Xbox One arrived there. The consoles will cost 2,899 and 1,299 yuan respectively (about $470 and $210), considerably less than the Xbox One's 3,699 yuan sticker ($600 sans Kinect). Sony also revealed upcoming titles specifically for the Chinese market, in line with its commitment to provide "healthy games that are suitable to China's national conditions... as according to the relevant government policies." It's also working with a Chinese partner called OPCD and likely had to comply with government standards to smooth the way for Playstation devices. For nearly 12 years, consoles have been banned in the nation, though they're relatively easy to obtain on the gray market.

Swathed in sleek nostalgia, the 20th Anniversary PlayStation 4 simultaneously represents Sony's modern ambitions and its off-grey beginnings. It's a promotional item, a physical brand ambassador and a $500 cultural artifact all rolled into one. So, it's the sort of thing that calls for an unboxing gallery on a video game website.
Of course, Joystiq will be giving this pristine PlayStation away soon. The package has been slightly touched during photography, but it's just half the prize: the eventual winner stands the chance of lifting an eyelash from it, cloning one of us, commandeering our lives and receiving the 30th Anniversary PlayStation 5 for an unboxing gallery in 2024! Isn't that exciting?!

PlayStation owners might not be blessed with Electronic Arts' EA Access subscription program, but the outfit's Peter Moore has a consolation prize for you. Sort of. Starting today at 3 p.m. Eastern / 12 p.m. Pacific, you can download Need for Speed: Most Wanted for PlayStation Vita, Mirror's Edge for PlayStation 3 and Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare on PS4, all for free on the PSN Store. Pretty cool, right? But, you can't put this off: when Moore took the stage at today's PlayStation Experience keynote, he said the downloads only last until midnight Pacific tomorrow night -- hopefully you have some free space on your Sony console of choice. If not, well, there's still time to make room.

December 4th, 2014, 22:17 Posted By: wraggster
Sony’s virtual world PlayStation Home is wrongly regarded as a flop, one of its key developers has said.
Despite its 38m downloads, with 19m active users and 3m monthly users at its peak, the service has already started to wind down and will be terminated at the end of March.
"It was a massive success that everyone thinks was a failure," former Home architect Oscar Clark told TechRadar. “I genuinely think it was successful from a commercial point of view. It showed you could make money.
“There were like 20, 30 studios that made money out of home. Like five or six that made a million and a half a year, which is not big in the scheme of things, but individually those studios did pretty well. It made it possible for companies like nDreams and Lockwood to be companies at all.”
nDreams in October outlined the extent of its own success within Home, although Clark did go on to point out some of the struggles the service had to contend with, such as compromises on key technical goals.
"It wasn't as successful as it could have been for a variety of reasons,” he added. “Getting a clear strategy was difficult and it ended up being a compromise. We were investing in the experience over time, but the one thing we would never get was the one thing that really mattered.
"I needed to be able to exit a game to [get to] Home. Everyone thought it was going to be the other way around. Everyone thought it would be a game launching into a new game from Home, but that wasn't the key. The key was getting away from your game. You finish playing your game, you go to Home so you can meet the other players, talk in character, have a bit of a laugh, then go and play something else. And we couldn't' convince the Japanese team to do that, the system software guys.
“There were a whole bunch of technical reasons, but the primary thing was that there wasn't the political will internally to really invest in it being a replacement of the cross-media bar. It needed to be the place where you chose the content and where you returned to after."
The service was also dogged by the spectre of unfulfilled promises.
"When Phil Harrison stood up and said we were going to have trophy rooms... we couldn’t have because, unless it was mandated, no one's going to make a 3D trophy for every trophy you got in a game," Clark added.
"And the live TV sets were actually impossible at the time, we found a way to do it later – video texture on a screen – but it wasn't physically possible when it was announced.”

December 4th, 2014, 22:09 Posted By: wraggster
Sony has released free console themes to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the PlayStation.
The free themes are available now - there's one for PS4, one for PS3 and one for Vita.
Each theme features a 'PlayStation 20th Anniversary' logo and is designed with the original PlayStation's colour scheme of a grey background and red, yellow, green and blue icons. The PS4 theme also plays the original PlayStation startup sound when you turn the system on, as seen in this Vine.
PSone launched in Japan on December 3, 1994 and immediately won over gamers, quickly outselling its rival, the Sega Saturn.
The system essentially turned Sony into Nintendo's new rival, setting Sega off on a downward trend that eventually led to its withdrawal from the hardware business.
It eventually came to the west in September 1995, accompanied by a unique marketing campaign that targeted a young adult demographic rather than children.
The introduction of games such as WipEout, Tekken and Ridge Racer helped Sony attract an audience that was beginning to feel as if it was 'growing out' of gaming.
A total of 102 million PSones were sold worldwide.

December 4th, 2014, 22:07 Posted By: wraggster
BSkyB has released an app enabling Sky customers to watch TV through their PS4.
TV From Sky is a free app available on the PlayStation Store, but it requires customers to have both a Sky iD and a Sky Go Extra subscription.
The app lets Sky customers stream live and on-demand TV on their console. However, it doesn't let users download TV shows, movies and box sets for offline viewing, a feature that's available to Sky Go Extra customers on mobiles, tablets and laptops.
A Sky Go Extra subscription costs £5 per month on top of your regular Sky bill, or is free if you have Sky Multiscreen.
Xbox 360 owners who used the Sky Go app were told in July that the service was no longer free to all Sky customers and would require a Sky Go Extra subscription, much like the PS4 app does.
Sky also offers another streaming video service, Now TV, on PS4, Xbox One, Xbox 360 and PS3. Designed for non-Sky subscribers, Now TV offers on-demand, limited time access to some of Sky's most popular content including films and sport.

Sony issued an update for PlayStation 4 consoles last night, which is expected to further improve system stability. Update 2.03's notes are minimal, simply stating that "system software stability during use of some features has been improved" with the patch.
The update arrived three weeks after firmware version 2.02 for the system, which bore the same description as yesterday's patch. In both cases, the updates clean up the multitude of problems introduced by Sony's major 2.00 update in late October. The subsequent early November patch rectified the rest mode issues, though it seems the console manufacturer had more items to tweak in the system. As of the end of October, shipments for the PS4 reached 13.5 millionconsoles.

Twenty years ago this week in Japan, Sony cemented its name in the annals of video game legend with the launch of the original PlayStation. The little gray box would help usher in a new era of gaming, and bring players to worlds that could only be discovered in our wildest dreams.
Though there are countless classic games in the PlayStation's library, the Joystiq team reminisces about a handful of favorites. Which games on the PS1 were significant to our growth as lifelong admirers of gaming culture?

Happy Birthday, PlayStation! It's been twenty years since the first Sony console, and to celebrate its two-decade run, SCE has decked its fourth-generation console in the same colors and design licks of the original PlayStation. It's, naturally, a limited edition (12,300 consoles will go on sale, matching the launch date of the PS1), and even the controller, camera and (jeez) power cables will all get a coating of 1994 gray. But, what if you already own a PS4? Or don't fancy your chances of snagging one of the limited run? You can still get your dose of nostalgia, as Sony's also released a PSone theme for its current console -- complete with vintage start-up sound -- you just need to download the latest firmware update. Take a closer look at the full detail (and videos) below. We'll add more pictures when we can -- but if you're game for some gray, preorders start December 6 in the US.

December 2nd, 2014, 23:27 Posted By: wraggster
The PlayStation 4 will be sold at a lower price than the Xbox One when it launches in China, according to new reports from various Chinese media sources.
The rumour started on the estimable Chinese tech blog WPDang, which reported that the PlayStation 4 will sell for 2,999 RMB when it is released (in all likelihood) early next year. By contrast, the Xbox One, which is already on sale in China, currently sells for 3,699 RMB without Kinect.
That's a difference of around $110 between the base models of each console, rising to $210 for the Xbox One bundled with Kinect.
And there is an interesting twist to the story. When Sony and Microsoft first laid out their plans for launching in China, they each named a local company as a partner: BesTV for Xbox One and Shanghai Oriental Pearl for PlayStation 4. However, last week, the companies were merged to form the Shanghai Media Group, meaning that both consoles will be operated and sold by the same organisation.
This means that the PlayStation 4 is likely to carry the same limitations in China as the Xbox One, most of which relate to the variety of available software. Used game sales are not allowed, official games are all region-locked, and the chairman of the Shanghai Media Group recently stated a reluctance to sell games from international developers.
"Bringing foreign games into the country doesn't make BesTV money, doing development and operating the sales platforms ourselves provides the biggest profits," said Li Ruigang, according to Kotaku. "The people who make money selling game discs are companies like Sony and Microsoft, so relying on selling discs is definitely not what we want."

GAME has confirmed its £299.99 Xbox One hardware bundle for tonight’s Black Friday sale, and now it looks as if it might be joined by a PS4 one.
HotUKDeals, which was first on the case with the Xbox One deal, reckons GAME’s Aberdeen store tweeted a picture of a £299.99 PS4 hardware bundle that includes the console, controller and copies of both DriveClub and The Last of Us: Remastered.
The tweet has now been removed but the style is consistent with how the store shared the Xbox One promotion.
Xbox One bundles seem pretty commonplace amidst the UK’s Black Friday deals, but PS4 offers have been thin on the ground thus far.
Still completely MIA is Nintendo’s Wii U, however. Could there be a £199.99 bundle, including perhaps Mario Kart 8 or Super Smash Bros and Super Mario World 3D on the cards?
