Sony is no stranger to idiosyncratic hardware design. Nintendo and Sega put analog sticks on their controllers in the '90s? Sony adds on an extra stick and redefines console controllers. Touch screens are de rigueur? Sony slaps a touch surface on the front and back of PS Vita. The PlayStation 4 is a sleek piece of modern consumer tech design, but even it's got its quirks.
Case in point: the Dualshock 4 light bar. Every PS4 controller looks like KITT fromKnight Rider, with a giant oblate spheroid of light pulsing on the front. Not just good for running down the battery, the light bar actually performs some unusual functions in a variety of games. Below the break is a taster's choice selection of memorable light bar uses from the PlayStation 4's first year of games. After browsing that, take our poll and discuss the light bar's career in the comments.

In the spirit of the money-saving holidays (and Thanksgiving, we guess), Sonykicked off a new Co-Op Gaming sale today that discounts games with local or online multiplayer functionality. Of the group, there are ten PlayStation 4 games on sale through PSN this week, among which are Awesomenauts Assemble ($5.39), EA Sports UFC ($13.99),Mercenary Kings ($8.99), Rayman Legends ($19.59), Surgeon Simulator: A&E Anniversary Edition ($6.39), TowerFall Ascension ($7.34) and Trine 2: Complete Story ($7.99). Other notable deals include Borderlands 2 (PS3, $4.54), Dark Souls 2(PS3, $19.59), Rayman Origins ($13.29 on Vita, $9.79 on PS3) and Far Cry 3 (PS3, $9.79).

Sony may know how to build great gadgets, but convincing people to part with money in exchange for them has turned out to be nearly impossible. In the outfit's most recent financial results, its faltering mobile division was single-handedly responsible for wiping out the blockbuster profits earned by the PlayStation 4. At a recent investor conference, however, executive Hiroki Totoki told the audience that the company has a new three-year plan designed to staunch these losses. In fact, the plan can be summed up pretty simply as "make a lot fewer TVs and smartphones."

According to the Federal Trade Commission, Sony deceived consumers by falsely advertising the PlayStation Vita's "game-changing" features when the console launched in the US. And, perhaps in an effort to stay out of court, the electronics company has agreed and, more importantly, settled with the FTC. As a result, Sony will be providing a partial refund of $25 cash or credit, or a $50 voucher for select, as-of-yet-unnamed games and/or services, to people who bought its handheld consoleprior to June 1st, 2012. The FTC cites Sony's Cross-Platform Gaming, Cross-Save,Remote Play and 3G connectivity as the features used to mislead consumers, noting that some of these a) didn't work as advertised or b) were nowhere to be found.

Strategy Analytics sees PlayStation Now and Nvidia Grid Game service driving cloud gaming adoption
Cloud gaming has yet to really make a big impact on the mainstream gaming market, but that could be changing in the near future, according to a new report from research firm Strategy Analytics. The firm believes next year will mark an inflection point for the cloud technology as "a large installed base of cloud gaming capable devices, big brand names entering the cloud gaming market, and improving network performance will drive cloud gaming to new heights in 2015."
Specifically, Strategy Analytics names Sony's PlayStation Now and Nvidia's Grid Game Streaming Service, which it says will reach nearly 30 million devices by the end of this year, and then will grow 500 percent to almost 150 million by year-end 2015. The company added that "primarily to support and profit from backward compatibility," it's expecting other games companies to also get more heavily involved in cloud gaming once Sony or Nvidia prove a successful pricing plan.
Strategy Analytics' Michael Goodman, Director of Digital Media Strategies, remarked, "2014 is proving to be a watershed moment with major players putting their credibility and brand names on the line to make cloud gaming work. While broadband speeds and consumer acceptance of subscription models have come a long way, access to content remains an issue for all services. The major video game publishers have so far successfully managed an incremental transition from physical to digital media, but cloud gaming offers publishers a new revenue stream."

Company "found no evidence that there was any intrusion into our network"

Sony has denied the claims of DerpTrolling, a hacker group which claimed it had raided the databases of the PSN, along with a number of other online services.
The group had published a list of emails and passwords for PSN, Windows Live Mail and 2K Games accounts online, and claimed to be prepared to release more, but Sony says that they've come from other sources than hacking.
"We have investigated the claims that our network was breached and have found no evidence that there was any intrusion into our network," the company wrote in a declaration to Joystiq. "Unfortunately, Internet fraud including phishing and password matching are realities that consumers and online networks face on a regular basis. We take these reports very seriously and will continue to monitor our network closely."
GamesIndustry.biz requested statements from the companies involved last week, but none were forthcoming.

Positioning PS4 as a gamer-centric device has played a major role in the console becoming the clear frontrunner in the current-gen sales race, but attracting more casual adopters may be key to Sony retaining its market lead over the coming years.
In order to capitalise on PS4's early momentum, PlayStation UK managing director Fergal Gara says the company needs to keep its existing user base engaged while also attracting different types of consumers.
Reflecting on PS4's first year on the market, he told Red Bull: "Adopting a very gamer-focused perspective from the outset served us extremely well. I think what we also learned is that it's really important to keep innovating to keep interest in the sector.
"This year sees the introduction of Share Play, the introduction of PlayStation TV and as we look forward there's plenty more to come - PlayStation Now and Project Morpheus looming in the background as a potential new project to take to market. It's a great start but we can't rest easy, we must keep exciting and delighting gamers - and of course broadening the audience as we go."
Looking to the future, Gara said: "I'd like it to continue with the innovation stream I just talked about, but also what we want to see in the next year or two is a bigger mass market play, shall we say. So in order to broaden and perhaps fill the void that's being left latent by, say, the Wii - which is a shadow of its former self.
"We need to have the kind of product that will engage that more casual consumer. I think that's a big opportunity for us, and that's not yet clear on the horizon, but something we should and I'm sure will be focused on as we look forward into year two, three and four."

PlayStation UK's managing director has outlined PlayStation's plans to attract a more mainstream audience, filling the gap left by Nintendo's console.
"What we want to see in the next year or two is a bigger mass market play, shall we say. So in order to broaden and perhaps fill the void that's being left latent by, say, the Wii - which is a shadow of its former self," Fergal Gara told Red Bull.

In the interview he also highlighted the console's other offerings, Share Play, PlayStation TV, PlayStation Now and Project Morpheus and celebrated the success of the PlayStation 4 so far.
"We've learned how important it is to get your positioning right in the first place," he said.
"Adopting a very gamer-focused perspective from the outset served us extremely well. I think what we also learned is that it's really important to keep innovating to keep interest in the sector. We have innovation coming through this year and plenty more on the agenda for years to come."
The PlayStation brand is currently celebrating its 20th anniversary.

As loyal fans will all know, the popular 2001 movie titled Lara Croft:Tomb Raider, featuring the sexy Angelina Jolie, was actually based on the incredibly popular video game series.
In 2003, the sequel to this film, titled Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life, was released.Video game enthusiasts applauded Jolies’ performance in both of these movies.
The first ever appearance of Lara Croft was in the first video game released in 1996. Lara Croft plays the part of a good-looking, intelligent English archaeologist with not a lot of fear for anything. She ventures and explores ancient tombs and ruins around the world.
Croft has an incredible following, and is celebrated as one of the first video game characters to successfully be portrayed in a film.
The video game, Tomb Raider: Anniversary has made it onto the list of some of the top selling PSP video games in the US. From video games, to action adventure films, to comics and novels, today this theme can be enjoyed in any and all formats, it therefore goes without saying that there is also an online slot game titled Tomb Raider: Secret of the Sword.
This is a 5 reel, 30 pay line slot that features images of Lara Croft, portrayed by Angelina Jolie, as well various images of ancient ruins that she comes across on her adventures
This is the follow up to the original slot. Both developed by Microgaming, one of the leading software developers in the world today.
The secret of the sword slot is obviously a souped-up version of the original, with additional features such as an extra 5 pay lines.
As fans can expect, they are in for a realtreat with this slot. Players can visit UK online casinos such as Platinum Play Casino and 32 Red casino to enjoy the adventure in this slot, including speed bikes, steep cliffs, pistols, and more.

I'm proud to announce our first 60 FPS youtube video (and possibly the first 60 FPS Kingdom Hearts 2 video on the internet), after 60 FPS videos got enabled a couple of days ago. The gameplay has been recorded with the 60 FPS patch from our forum members and at 6x native resolution. It's not as smooth as the original file, but still you can finally see how lovely it looks on PCSX2 without frame dropping! All our youtube videos from now on will be 50/60 FPS!
Keep in mind that for now, 60 FPS videos only work on Google Chrome!
The past weeks I've been working on upgrading our website to the latest version of Joomla and on the way decided to also redesign it as I didn't like how it ended up last time. I've already used many of the ideas posted in the last redesign thread on our forum, I've fixed a few stuff that were buggy, reduced both CSS and javascript and finally got themes working It's still pretty bad code wise but I've done my best to improve it and will keep at it.
I'm not sure when it will be done, but it might be synchronized with a server wide upgrade of our linux OS as well, to reduce downtime.
After the main page is done, I will move on to updating mybb to the latest 1.8 version, although I'm still waiting for the software to be mature. 1.8 was extremely buggy, 1.8.1 is better but still not good enough so I hope with the next 1.8.2 release I will be able to start working on it (and a new custom theme it seems )
Edit: Uploaded new video, this should be with the 60 FPS patch on, sorry guys

It took a while until I found some spare time to check firmware 2.00 for the PlayStation4, but it was worth it!
First I'll show you two funny screenshots from my PS4:
|
I told you the TitleID research is important, didn't I? |
|
NPXS20993 |
So yes, I could finally access the ★Debug Settings on a retail console. But no, we can not use it
Sony learned their lesson and removed the back-end so this is not very useful for us.
Maybe there is a way to unlock it's full potential, but I could not find it, yet.
Here I explained how to start applications by it's TitleID on PS4. This kind of information is very important and I would like to encourage everyone to try it and add your results to the public list of PS4 TitleID's.
Next on my list was to check WebKit. Sure, the stand-alone Internet Browsers WebKit was updated, but what about other applications and games?
Any application listed under the "TV & Video" menu uses a quite old WebKit.
To be more specific:
Mozilla/5.0 (PlayStation 4) AppleWebKit/531.3 (KHTML, like Gecko) SCEE/1.0 Nuanti/2.0
Worth a try for those who want 2.00
Last but not least I made a ridiculous discovery. This one has to do with a memory leak which led me to super interesting data. So far I got around 15MB of compressed but clear-text script data. If you wonder if this is a lot, YES IT IS! In a readable layout this is more than 250.000 lines of code.
Currently I shared this with a hand full of trusted developers to help me mastering this amount. Once we are through it we'll post about it, so stay tuned!
Please remember this was only a quick review which took like 2 hours, surely there's still a lot to find on this firmware

Native vita hack news keep coming for those of you who managed to keep their Vita in firmware 3.18 or under.
Yesterday, developer Hykem released his own set of tools to leverage the Webkit exploit on the PS Vita . (If you don’t know who Hykem is, just know that he’s been on the scene for quite some time now, and has experience on lots of Sony’s stuff). Download links at the bottom of the article
Vitasploit is an attempt at merging all the ongoing efforts (memtools_vita, JSoS Module Dumper, akai,…) and improving on them. Hykem says some of the code has been cleaned up, and made more generic (“The scripts can be used for both memory reading/writing and ROP code execution by changing a single variable.”).
Additionally, he plans to port the scripts to as many firmwares as possible (3.30+ owners, remember, we’re talking of an exploit that works up to 3.18 here. When you read “as many firmwares as possible”, it means anything at 3.18 or below!), with the ultimate goal of reverse engineering various versions of the modules, to understand what has changed, and maybe find even more vulnerabilities, or understand how the NID poisoning was implemented (that was apparently added in firmware 2.xx)
Screenshot thanks to @HarryKnucklez
Hykem also released a full list of the modules that can be dumped through the exploit, with BBalling1/nas’s work:

NES/GBA/GB/Lynx/PC Engine/PC-FX/Wonderswan/Genesis/SNES/VirtualBoy/PS1 emulator has been updated recently. Changes:
- NES: Fixed a minor issue that could break compiling after --disable-nls was passed to the configure script.
- Added support for automatic loading and usage of redump.org "SBI" files when loading CUE sheets; the files should have the same base filename as the CUE sheet, and the file extension case should match the case of the corresponding character in the CUE sheet filename file extension.
- PSX: Fixed half-implemented broken implementation of CDC command 0x00; fixes lockups in the European PAL releases of "Spyro 2" and "Spyro - Year of the Dragon".

The PS Vita is running a "Half Byte Loader" bubble. An exploit on its own, no bought exploit game necessary for this.
This does not enable piracy*. This can not enable "free Vita games".
Most work done by qwikrazor (@qwikrazor87).
Greetings, Z
People claim this to be fake, because of the camera auto-adjustment, that happened after the bright white flash.
Please take a look at this video, it should be clearer

This video showcases a PS Vita running various PSP titles, that are not available on the PSN Store (be it the european, north american or japanese PSN store).
The game are 100% working and run natively on the PS Vita (as bubbles).
It is questionable why Sony did not add all the PSP games to the PSN store, even though those games are working?!
