Just because Pioneer isn't in the plasma business anymore doesn't mean the company is dead, and one of the new points of focus over there is on media aggregation. So part of the new do-it-all Entertainment Tap concept Pioneer was displaying today included a demo of storing Managed Copies of Blu-ray Discs on a hard drive. The copy itself was done in about 4x real time (dependent on the drive's speed) and looked great thanks to some hardware transcoding. We also appreciated the Pioneer interface that made copying the disc easy. Of course at this point this is just a demo, with no word on availability or price, but it is a start to what will one day hopefully be a better way to enjoy HD movies.

GamesIndustry.biz sister site Eurogamer has been told by another UK retailer that a 250GB PlayStation 3 Slim bundle "is a definite for October".
The source revealed that the shop's suppliers didn't know which game or games will be combined with the console, but they did say that Sony plans to unveil the bundle or bundles at the Tokyo Game Show later this month, which runs from September 24-27.
This is the third time that the new PS3 Slim SKU has been outed this week, following the revelation by a Spanish shop that an EUR 350 FIFA 10-plus-250GB PS3 Slim bundle was set for an October release.
That was followed by a top UK retailer backing that claim, but adding that UK consumers would see a choice of game in the bundle from one of Assassin's Creed II, Gran Turismo 5 and Uncharted 2.
Sony continues to decline comment on the matter.

Sony Computer Entertainment America has reported a 300 per cent increase in PlayStation 3 sales following the September 1 launch of the new PS3 Slim.
"Our top retailers have reported a 300 per cent lift in PS3 hardware sales and an increase of 140 per cent in total hardware revenue across the PlayStation portfolio when comparing the first week of September to the week before the $299 price adjustment," the company said in a statement.
The console's success since the launch of the PS3 Slim has not been limited to the US market. The PS3 Slim's release drove an 11-fold increase in weekly UK PS3 sales and a 17 per cent increase in PS3 software sales, while the console recorded record weekly sales in Japan following its debut.
During August, North American PS3 sales rose 72 per cent over July levels, to 210,000 units, boosted by the introduction of price cuts across the PS3 range on August 18. A number of retailers also began selling the new PS3 Slim model a week ahead of its official September 1 release date.
SCEA also said that the "best is yet to come," noting that it is gearing up for "one of the best content line-ups in its history." PS3 system exclusives including God Of War III, Gran Turismo 5, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time will launch for the platform over the next seven months "With more than 25 exclusive titles slated through the holiday and into early next year, these games are just the tip of the iceberg. No other entertainment device is better positioned for this holiday."

SCEE’s Zeno Colaco suggests Minis could be released on other platforms, including PS3
New incentives may lie ahead for developers working on PSP Minis. The sub-100MB-sized games may soon end up on store shelves as packaged UMD games, according to Sony.
“The most successful Minis titles will probably transition to UMD,” said Sony Europe’s Zeno Colaco, in an interview with Develop published later today.
Minis are essentially Sony’s answer to the significant popularity of App Store games.

New podcast released:
Back from the autumn hiatus (and if you’re wondering what I’ve been up to, check out the daily Edinburgh Fringe Podcasts) and the excitement about the launch of the PSP-Go is rising.
Couple that with the concept of the smaller mini-games and Sony opening up their publishing and PSN storefronts to smaller developers and the PSP ecosystem is looking particularly healthy. Who would have thought that in January?
And to go with that, one of those smaller games that I suspect would work great as a mini-game, Chameleon. As a $20 retail UMD game it failed to set the world alight, but I want to see more games like this in the run up to Christmas. Fin out why, and my thoughts on the August news, in the latest PSP Show.

I challenge you to a game of MTN’s Graph… It’s similar to Peg Jump in terms of simplicity; however, Graph definitely poses a real challenge as you progress further through each level. And not only that: MTN has shared a pre-release of a Graph Level Editor (GLE) allowing you to create, well, your own levels. Download both the game and the editor below.
As I mentioned, the Graph concept is simple: you start where you see the red dot, move the cursor to a connecting dot ridding the line between the two. Once you’ve eliminated all lines, proceed to the next.

News/release from indrora
Ebootr 0.01 release beta by Indrora
Ebootr is a replacement for PBP Unpacker. It was written in C# against the .NET 3.5 Runtime. If you keep your computer anywhere up to date, you should be fine. otherwise, be sure to download it from microsoft:
Download details: .NET Framework 3.5
Its fast, except when copying data from large (i.e. >400MB) Eboots. On my 2.1Ghz box, it took ~10 seconds to create an eboot off of Final Phantasy Origins (keeping only DATA.PSAR and DATA.PSP and PARAM.SFO)
For those interested, I've included my Eboot loader library in source form.

Sony Europe's head of developer relations discusses the firm's grand Mini plans
Apple’s approach to gaming cannot go unnoticed. The company continues to flaunt some remarkable statistics which show, beyond anything else, that there is a vast potential in mobile gaming for the ‘digital lifestyle’.
Yet questions remain unanswered surrounding the long-term sustainability of App Store games.
Developers are finding it increasingly difficult to get discovered in what is now an ocean of over 13,000 iPhone games, and, while many of those games can be sold for as little as 59p/99¢, many consumers looking for a rich play experience remain unsatisfied by what’s on offer.
With these flaws there lies an opportunity for a rival to step in and exploit them. That’s precisely what Sony is doing with its new PSP Minis initiative.
Launching in a matter of weeks on the PlayStation Store, Minis are micro-sized digital games available at App Store prices.
In the first half of a two-part interview, Sony Europe's head of developer relations – Zeno Colaco – explains how Minis will offer developers a better chance to succeed, and consumers a better play experience.
There’s a wealth of developers creating games for the iPhone. What reasons do you think they have to turn their efforts to PSP Minis?
Colaco: Well there’s certainly opportunity for them. PSP Minis is a different approach altogether in that we still have a professional environment – if you want to call it that.
I’m not suggesting that iPhone developers are unprofessional, but I think that the App Store has attracted a number of hobbyist developers.
Clearly, the PSP is designed for gaming.
We’ll of course get some transition. In fact I think we already have; we’ve already got on board some developers who have had much success in the iPhone sector; developers such as Subatomic Studios, who of course had much success with [portable tower defence title] Fieldrunners.
Subatomic will be bringing that game to the PSP, but rather than just port it across, the functionality is going to be specific to the PSP version.
That’s the key element for Minis. There’s new opportunities that come with the greater functionality that the PSP hardware provides.
Going back to the question, what would you cite as the key reasons why developers – especially iPhone developers – should consider developing PSP titles?
One of the first things we tried to do with our new approach is lower the barrier to entry by bringing down the kit prices to about 80 per cent.
The second thing we’ve done is take an approach on how people applied to be part of the PSP development program – it’s a very open approach, definitely, but there’s still a [selection] process because you do need a dev kit.
We’ve already seen an uptake in companies approaching us since we announced Minis at Gamescom, making their game proposals at tpr.scee.net, and that process is pretty simple.
On that website, all developers really have to do is explain their game and their company and very quickly we give them accessibility to the platform. That includes access to technology sites before they even commit to buying a development kit, so they can spec what they want to do.
So, incentive-wise, this is more a case of Sony reducing the barriers to entry more than anything else.
You’ve seen the first wave of proposals from these developers. From what you’ve witnessed so far, how much of these game proposals seem suited to the PSP Minis’ direction? How many of these games are as innovative as is implied with the smaller independent studios?
Obviously we targeted a number of developers before making our PSP Minis announcement at Gamescom. We contacted developers not only from a mobile gaming background, but also a traditional PSP development background, and even a PS2 development background.
But also we’ve also targeted a number of newer developers who’ve made interesting PC games and casual games on the net.
We’ve contacted these developers about porting their games over to the PSP, but when you do that, you also need to think about how they got that innovative idea in the first place.
The positive thing that I’m seeing is that we’re seeing multiple applications of product. There is a fair amount of the brand-new in the Minis product mix, and with our new development partners, there’s less risk in actually developing a new title for us. We’ll see more of that.
At the front end, we have a nice mix of both the innovative and the brand new, as well as recognisable franchises such as Sudoku and Tetris from EA.
So while we’re pushing for innovation, we do want people to come to the PSP Minis store and see some recognisable franchises in there.
Though Sony’s demonstratively lowered the barriers for entry with PSP Minis, what’s Sony’s position on ‘hobbyist developers’? Do you encourage them to develop PSP Minis?
Absolutely. We were at Gamescom with Honeyslug; their team started with three people, so it’s not exactly what I would call a company of the corporate structure of publishers like Electronic Arts.
It shows that we’re very much encouraging these kinds of developers to work with us. In some ways it’s much easier to work with smaller developers to get content through.
For them, there’s no hidden costs from our side. We’re actually running a QA cycle on these games; we’re essentially giving them a helping hand throughout the development process up until they’re published on the Minis store.
Sony has of course attained much praise for how it supports the smaller developers, yet $1500 dev kit costs likely remain the biggest barrier, especially with an iPhone SDK being free to use. Are there plans in place to bridge the gap to the smaller developers that cannot afford a $1500 development kit?
Further down the line, we may investigate a totally free model or supported model.
Right now, we’re looking for a good portfolio of games. Unlike with the App Store, we’re looking to support everyone that develops for us, instead of leaving developers out in the wilderness. We’re not immediately interested in giving developers free access and no help.
There are dangers in having total open access; having six thousand applications where probably only thirty are discovered by the consumer. Some of the developers working on the App Store and PSP Minis tell us that they prefer our approach because they get more visibility.
Our focus isn’t directed straight towards the App Store. We acknowledge that we’ll be competing in that space, and I think at some point we’ll give developers access that allows things to move down that route.
First and foremost, we at Sony need to develop Minis as its own category.
We’re not short of product. Right now we’re working with about 60 developers with about 50 games coming out before Christmas. I think we’re going to launch with about 15 titles.
How will Minis appear on the PlayStation Store? How will they be promoted?
At Gamescom we simply stated that the PS Store would have its own Minis section, but I can assure that the Minis section will definitely have its own unique presence in the Store. We will push it very hard.

PSP ita have posted some observations of whats hidden in firmware 6.0:
The release of a new official Sony firmware is always cause for debate among PSP owners, is to comment on any additional features introduced with the new update is to figure out if Sony has corrected any bugs found in previous versions and has introduced new anti-hacking. Just hours after the release, the French site PSPGEN is already successful in decrypting the new version of system software and is able to provide the earliest information.
A preliminary analysis of the new firmware you can see the new ones. Prx appointed 04G, for future PSP Go! as the same firmware files are also 01G, 02G and 03G respectively provided for PSP-1000, PSP-2000 and PSP-3000. The most important thing in this regards POPS 6:00, the PS1 emulator, stand-alone Sony. For the first time it has a version of that. Prx specific to a single console. As you can see from the image to follow, has made its appearance file pops_04g.prx which, as explained above, is reserved for imminent PSP Go!. The questions then arise spontaneously. Why Sony decided to introduce this new. Prx? The PSP Go! operate differently emulation of PlayStation 1 titles? The answers have nothing but the first October, when the new console will be available in European shops.

News via http://streetskaterfu.blogspot.com/2...m-dumping.html
There's a little "bug" in the PlayStation3's NAT test which causes that you can dump random data from the HDD and RAM. Why exactly this appears; I don't know, yet. But well, it is interesting.
The way how to do it is pretty simple. Set up Wireshark on the PC and activate ICS (Internet Connection Sharing). Connect the PS3 with the PC via LAN and start Wireshark's logging/sniffing feature on the LAN device. Now go to Settings on the PS3 and start a Internet Connection Test in the Network option. When the PS3 starts the NAT testing it will send default STUN packets together with several IP Fragments. Those both packet types will contain random data which the PS3 grabs from the HDD and/or RAM.
There you go.

Tired of the old spasm assembler and all its errors? Tired of injecting most of your Playstation hacks manually or by using external programs? Fear no more, here comes armips!
Kingcom released it just recently, but a few people have been testing it for a few months, and boys if it’s good. This assembler is pretty much what xkas would have been with Playstation hacking. It can do pretty much everything you’d want to, plus a whole chicken.
A brief list of its features:
open multiple files (useful for overlays and shared code/data);
direct code injection;
pre-defined and user-defined macros;
delay slot detection (sperimental);
Check the readme for the rest of the list. Future public releases will also include support for GBA, DS, N64, PSP, and PS2 processors.

According to a Sony rep speaking with Cnet, "over the following two or three years" Sony will begin installing hardware inside the PS3 that will enable the console to display games in 3D.
Now, before we go any further, this information was supplied to Cnet by a Sony rep at the recent IAF consumer electronics show in Berlin. The same IAF where Sony reps haven't exactly had the best track record for accurate statements. So this may turn out to be total bullshit.
But just in case it's not, here's the deal: next year, Sony will release a line of 3D-capable Bravia TVs designed to be compatible with the PlayStation 3. Which means, in theory, all PS3 games could run in 3D, provided you have that TV.
Sounds great, but remember, it's the same claim Sony later backed down from.
More interesting is the report that in 2011-12, similar technology will be installed inside the PlayStation 3 itself, meaning - in theory, at least - you could get games running in stereoscopic on other TV sets, not just specially-equipped Bravias.
Which would be awesome, but seeing as previous reports from IAF were so loose on facts, we've pinged Sony for comment, and will update if/when we hear back.

September 10th, 2009, 18:39 Posted By: wraggster
The head of the largest adult video production company in the world plans to start pushing for the inclusion of porn on the Playstation Network.
If Vivid Entertainment head Steve Hirsch succeeds, he will look into getting adult videos on the Xbox 360 and perhaps the Wii, the co-founder of Vivid told Kotaku.
"Our point is pretty simple," Hirsch told Kotaku. "As long as age verification is in place that (Sony) feels comfortable with we see no reason why adults shouldn't be allowed to access adult movies on the Playstation 3."
Hirsch said his company, that has an extensive catalog of films including Bad Wives, Seven Deadly Sins and Tristan Taramino's Expert Guide to Oral Sex 2, is in the process of drafting a formal request to send to Sony Computer Entertainment, but that they have not yet discussed the idea with the company.
Sony officials did not respond to requests for comment for this story.
Hirsch says they've decided to broach the subject now with Sony because of the console maker's decision last month to allow Japan's DDM.TV to bring on-demand Blu-ray quality HD adult movies to the console. That service is only available in Japan.
"They had made it clear in the past they were not interested," Hirsch said. "Now that they have agreed to in some way allow adult films on the Japanese platform we are going to move forward and make a formal request."
Sony's reluctance to allow adult films on their platform is not a new issue, Hirsch said they confronted the same issues when Blu-ray first came out.
"We do support Blu-ray now, but Sony did not want adult Blu-ray for a long time," he said. "The way they stopped that from happened was that there was only a few places where you could get Blu-ray replicated and authored.
"For a long time it was only HD-DVD that would allow us to replicate in HD. Ultimately Sony came around."
And Hirsch hopes the same will happen with the Playstation Network.
The idea is that there would be an Adults Only section on the Playstation 3's online network, which already rents and sells more mainstream movies. There are a number of ways to verify that a person is 18 before they get access to that area, Hirsch said.
Hirsch understands it will be an uphill battle.
"It is certainly something that creates a lot of attention, when you talke about adult content being put on any new platform," he said. "It isn't that dissimilar to getting it on cell phones.
"Certainly we understand there is going to be some resistance on Sony's part when it comes to adult content on their console. We all understand there are kids who use the Playstation every day and we want to keep content away from them, but there are also adults who use it."
Vivid Entertainment is currently drafting a letter that they plan to send to Sony by the end of the week, he said. And if things go well, Hirsch will look into getting adult content on Microsoft's Xbox Live video service and other gaming platforms.
"It is something as an industry we would like to accomplish," he said. "If we move forward here we would look at other potential gaming platforms like the Xbox 360. The Wii seems to skew a little young."

Chart-Track reported that PlayStation 3 rose 999 percent (exclamation point!) in the week of the PS3 Slim launch, but without some actual context, that's just a crazy-sounding percentage. MCV provides us some (partial) context, estimating that 40,000 PS3 Slims were sold in that period. This also means that a paltry 4,000 (ish) were sold the previous week.
MCV arrived at that number after Sony said that the Slim's launch sales were 20 percent behind those of the PS2 Slim, which sold 50,000 units in its first week in the UK. The estimated percentage of an estimated amount means that the 40,000 number isn't officially official (don't use it as the basis for a chapter in your History of Console Sales book), but it shouldn't be that far off. And that number doesn't include however many PS3 Hefties were purchased.
Compare this "drastic" sales boost to the 7,350 percent bump the Slim caused in Japan. The PS3 went from selling fewer units in Japan than in the UK, to almost four times as many. Now that's a new hardware launch.

PSP Firmware 6.00 is now available for those adventurous enough to click on Network Update from the XMB. The changelog, copied in full below, may look rather uninspiring at first:
Games can now be grouped and displayed in folders based on their expire date under [Game].
Under [Settings], [Network Update] has been changed to [System Update]. Under [System Update], you can now choose how to update the system software.
The number of colors that can be selected under [Settings] > [Theme Settings] has been increased.
Revisions to strengthen security have been added. (Internet Browser)
While additional XMB colors will excite few, the mention of "expire dates" for games sounds rather surprising. PSP currently supports time-based licenses for video rentals. However, applying the same rules to games hasn't been done before. Earlier in the year, we discovered plans for a potential games rental service for PSP. Is firmware 6.00 preparing the hardware for a new expansion to the PlayStation Store?

September 10th, 2009, 17:17 Posted By: wraggster
Sony's release of the new model PlayStation 3 at its reduced price point of GBP 249.99 has increased sales by up to 15 times, independent retailers have told GamesIndustry.biz, with consumers trading in old models of the console - as well as rival platforms - in exchange for the new slim hardware.
The sales increase has been even more positive than expected, according to SimplyGames director, Neil Muspratt, who reports "catapulted sales" that soared following the release of the PlayStation 3 slim.
"We sold approximately 15 times the volumes of 80GB the week before," he confirmed. "Sure, sales on the 80GB had slowed and the launch of any new price or configuration gets immediate results. But this one seemed especially effective and the timing means we should see a good sales run through to Christmas now."
"It's an excellent price point," reckons ChipsWorld MD Don McCabe. "It makes it affordable. I think in the past Sony has suffered by not being able to get over to the consumer how good a machine it is. At that sort of price point people are more inclined to give it a bash."
McCabe confirms his company sold ten times more PS3s than Xbox 360s last week, even with the Elite's price drop to GBP 199.99.
On Microsoft's price cut, McCabe is less positive. "360 has dropped in price but that just seems to have brought it back to level. We're selling more PS3s than we are Xboxes at the moment."
Whether this is a trend that will continue is difficult to predict. "Once we get 4-5 weeks in of the new machine then it'll be interesting. You'll be able to see what the take up against the Xbox is," said McCabe.
Retailers agree though that the sales surge is what Sony, and the industry as a whole, desperately needed.
"Sony really needed this shot in the arm and this sort of initiative brings momentum for the entire industry," commented Muspratt.
Consumers perhaps haven't realised just what the PlayStation 3 can do, added McCabe, and its continued success could rely on Sony getting this information across. "It's a very powerful machine. It's seen as a games machine and a Blu-ray player and that's about it. Where that's just two things it can do - it can do an awful lot more. Its down to the games, but it's also down to Sony educating the users."
Retailers have some concerns that over-competitive pricing could decrease the impact the price drop is having on profits later in the year however. Further reductions will "inevitably happen", said Muspratt.
"It's always a concern," added McCabe. "The machine is at a very good price anyway so why do you need to drop it an extra GBP 20-30? All you're going to do is pull market share and, at the end of the day, everyone needs to make money."
Since the new PlayStation 3 slim's release, Chart-Track has confirmed its sales are up over 1000 per cent week-on-week in the UK. The most recent software chart reflected that success too, with multi-platform game sales up by as much as 128 per cent following the PS3 and Xbox 360 price cuts. In Japan, the console sold 150,000 units in four days to beat its own launch record.

The Collector's Edition features an exclusive car in the form of a black Bugatti Veyron, plus five Bugatti art cards and swish silver foil effect packaging.
The console bundle, meanwhile, includes a GT-branded PSP3000, a voucher to unlock a white Corvette ZR1 on the PlayStation Network, and a leather pouch for your new handheld.
Both will appear in shops when the game launches on 1st October. There's no price for either edition as yet. Launching at the same time is the PSPgo - and early adopters of that machine will also get GT PSP for free.

Buying experience for DS and PSP is poor says marketing boss
The competition between iPhone, PSP and DS is hotting up - Apple used its iPod showcase event today to highlight its position in comparison to other handheld games platforms.
Specifically, the firm moved to crticise the buying experience for the DS and PSP in comparison to the iPhone and iPod Touch.
"When [DS and PSP] came out, they seemed so cool. But once you play a game on the iPod touch, you think 'hey, these things aren't so cool any more..." said Apple's marketing VP Phil Schiller.
"We're talking about 25, 30, 40 dollars a title. The kids can't afford those titles. Worse isn't the price, it's the buying experience."
A demo slide at the event compared the quantity of games on the platforms: PSP's 607 games, DS' 3,680 and then iPod touch's 21,178, before kicking into a video montage of App Store games.
