I seriously did not anticipate the sheer number of games I'd be seeing for the PSP at last night's Sony Computer Entertainment event. Too bad there wasn't time to play them all.
I did my best to prioritize the stuff we hadn't seen before, but I found myself jockeying with a lot of other journalists for a turn to play the hot stuff. While committing said jockeying, though, I ran into one of my Stanford classmates. Oliver Chiang scored himself an internship over at Forbes.com – earning the praise of our Stanford journalism overlords, whilst the mention of Kotaku drew only scorn and strange mispronunciations – but Oliver's been fighting the good fight for games journalism by getting games-related articles up on Forbes.com.
Check him out here for the tech perspective on the PSP Go. And check me out down below to see which games I successfully scored turns with:
Previews:
Army of Two: The 40th Day PSP Preview: A Fixed Perspective
Jak & Daxter: The Lost Frontier PSP Preview: A Blast From The Past
LittleBigPlanet PSP Preview: PSP Platforming At Its Cutest
Undead Knights Preview: Tag! You're A Zombie!
Tetris Preview: Adding and Subtracting From A Classic
Petz Preview: There's Some Strategy Here
Impressions And Other Stuff:
Assassin's Creed: Bloodlines Opens Up Gameplay And Closes The Book On Altair
Fat Princess: Fist Full Of Cake - Cake or Death? That Is The Question
PSP's Comic Book Store: Watch Civil War Unfold
Star Wars Battlefront: Elite Squadron Graduates To Holocron Canon

We've had a chance to test out the "Pause Game" function of the PSP Go, which was discovered yesterday by GameSpot UK. In the course of using a Go production unit last night, we tried the feature using two different games -- LocoRoco Midnight Carnival and Motorstorm: Arctic Edge -- and timed the process.
Pressing the PlayStation button on the Go brings up two options: Pause Game and Quit Game. We made our LocoRoco jump into the air and pressed it, selected Pause Game, and within 10 seconds reached the XMB (after a progress bar appeared to indicate the saving of the game's current state).
After selecting Pause Game, an icon appears under the Game section of the XMB -- it looks a bit like an egg and is labeled "Resume Game." We selected it and, 10 seconds later, were right back where we'd been, LocoRoco still mid-air. We had similar results with Arctic Edge, only we decided to use some of the system's functions, including the web browser, while the game was on hold. Again, a 10 second load and we were back, this time with a prompt to "press X to resume" the race.
We asked Sony if this feature will eventually make its way to the standard PSP and were told by PlayStation Network's Eric Lempel that it's PSP Go-only. It's a really convenient feature from our testing and has a nice added benefit: The Go can be completely powered off and still retain the game state, unlike with the standard PSP's sleep function.

Meeting with Rockstar yesterday for our first hands-on with the PSP "remastering" of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars, we kicked things off with a question that's on everyone's minds: What's happening to the DS version's touch-based minigames? The answer: They're all still in the game, just adapted to a button-based format.
We hotwired a car to try it out and were presented with a comic book panel-like inset that had us rotate the analog stick, time L and R button presses and rotate the stick again. According to Rockstar, similar mods have been made to all the minigames, but no minigames have been added exclusively for the PSP release. (Developer Rockstar Leeds did, however, deem the need to pay bridge tolls unnecessary.)
We were quickly pointed toward some added elements, specifically a new aiming "arc" for lobbing grenades and Molotovs while driving, copious bloom lighting (it was a rainy night) and punched-up explosions. The in-game "PDA" has also been redesigned slightly to mimic the PSP XMB interface.

Playstation.Blog has posted a new video recreating Sony's E3 demo of the Playstation Motion Controller. Well, most of the E3 demo, anyway -- the video does not recreate the nifty sword and bow demonstrations. Still, the rest of the demo, including spray paint, pencils, FPS mode, RTS gameplay and the manipulation of several different objects is all there. Even better, now the footage is in focus and shaky-cam free. Also, since the demo is no longer limited to the time (and nerve) constraints of E3, the technology wizards behind Sony's want get to explain everything in more detail. There's also a few things revealed that Sony didn't have time to show at E3, like fire-breathing domino snakes. Seriously.

More and more reports are appearing about PlayStation 3 consoles failing in a similar way to the earlier models of the Xbox 360, except for Sony, it's the 'Yellow Light of Death.' The BBC has an interesting article which suggests the problem could be almost identical to that which caused the Red Ring of Death — poor soldering connections. From the article: 'Several of those businesses have told Watchdog that the vast majority of consoles they see with the "yellow light of death" can be repaired by heating up specific parts of the circuit board. This process is called solder re-flow. By heating the connections between the components and the circuit board to temperatures in excess of 200 Celsius, the metal solder joints melt, just like they did when the device was first assembled. Console repairers say that this process method is commonly used to repair fractured connections, or dry joints.' But that's not the only rule from Microsoft's playbook Sony has been following; while they have admitted 12,500 out of 2.5 million systems have failed (a convenient 0.5%), they refuse to release full figures of failure rates, citing them as being 'commercially sensitive.' Unfortunately, Sony does not appear to be following Microsoft's lead with regard to an extended warranty, stating that if a PS3 fails after 12 months, it is not their problem. In the UK at least, the Sale of Goods Act would disagree with that statement.

The new downloadable games launching next month for the PSP won't support DLC or network play, according to Joystiq's report of a Sony presentation from this week's Austin Game Developers Conference.
Slides photographed by the site show that Sony is recommending developers "target single player stand-alone content." They also indicate that the Minis won't support downloadable content or peripherals. The restrictions resemble the early standards for Apps on Apple's store, standards that were recently modified to allow for online-multiplayer, DLC and peripherals.
Sony announced the Minis line at Gamescom in August, framing it as a game-centric program that will build a market of downloadable PSP titles that are under 100MB. Dozens of Minis are set for release by the end of the year.
Joystiq's report includes more on the Minis and as well as Sony's developer-oriented plans for the PSPgo and PlayStation Network.

If you've ever wished that those buttons on your videogame controller were over here instead of over there, you know who to call. Master modder Ben Heck's latest creation isn't his most amazing, but it fulfills a need for one gamer, that is to "make the shoulder buttons easier to get at." The result is a somewhat inelegant mod (by Heck's standards), bringing the L and R buttons to the fore, ditching the "last generation" rumble motors in the process. No loss, right Phil Harrison? Video demonstration after the break.

PSP Minis, coming to the PSP Go, are just like iPhone/Android apps (just more focused on gaming). But the list of things developers can't do on the platform destroys any point of its existence in the first place.
• no network or online features
• no downloadable content (expansions)
• no peripheral support
It's funny, the 100MB size restriction is the least of PSP Minis' problems. We're talking about closed box games, titles that are not only restricted in terms of multiplayer, but completely thwarted from doing anything interesting (like rendering superior graphics or, say, pinging twitter) in the cloud.
The original PSP was forward-thinking, stuffed with stars in its eyes as it promised networking with the PS3 anywhere from in the world. Now PSP Minis present the complete opposite idea. You will play your game on the PSP, and on the PSP it will stay.

September 18th, 2009, 16:01 Posted By: wraggster
Sony Computer Entertainment Asia president Tetsuhiko Yasuda has issued a strong warning to governments in the South-East Asia to continue its work in fighting piracy, an issue which he says is a threat to the development of the games industry in the region.
In a keynote speech during this year's GC Asia conference in Singapore, Yasuda-san noted that the country's government had all but eradicated the issue there, but counselled against complacency.
"I would like to extend my gratitude to the solid efforts that the Singapore government has made," he said. "However, with just a moment of relaxation in efforts to uphold copyright protection, it's possible that the same old problem will occur again.
"Therefore it is essential for the country to understand that upholding copyright protection is indispensable for the stable development of the software industry."
He went on to use the company's agreement with Nanyang Polytechnic, signed in April this year to train students on PlayStation 3 development, as an example - cautioning that future projects created as a result would be at risk.
"In that situation, those students who have made game development their life's dream will suffer the most, and will possibly damage their motivation for creating games," he warned, before requesting that fair treatment should be given to overseas IP as well as that produced locally.
"We cannot allow the activity of the pirate copy providers, who only care about making a quick profit, to destroy the dreams and motivation of the students - they are the very enemies to the creator," he continued.
"Together we should remain vigilant against this unscrupulous pirated product providers - I'm prepared to devote the rest of my life to copyright protection."

Consumer show stands firm in face of strong criticism from Sony; ratings slump for Robinson
Following last night’s focus on alleged manufacturing problems with Sony’s PS3 on BBC consumer rights show Watchdog, the broadcaster has fought back in its war of words with platform holder Sony.
Yesterday’s show, which has since been widely ridiculed by the UK games industry (and, indeed, MCV) claimed that Sony is cheating customers by refusing to fix what the show described as a systematic issue with launch versions of the next-gen console.
Sony responded by claiming that the allegations were inaccurate and that PS3 has a reliability record far in excess of the average fro consumer electronics.
However, the Watchdog website has issued a response of its own: “More than 150 Watchdog viewers have contacted us to say they've experienced [the yellow light of death] and by Sony's own admission, around 12,500 of the 2.5m PlayStations sold in the UK have shut down in this way since March 2007.
“The problem is mainly thought to affect the 60GB launch model, but Sony repeatedly refuses to release the failure rate for that model, claiming that the information is commercially sensitive.
“Sony dislikes the term ‘the yellow light of death’ since it implies a single fault is afflicting all consoles. It says the flashing yellow light is a ‘non-specific fault indicator that can be triggered in a range of different circumstances’.
"Sony adds that the yellow light could indicate a problem caused by ‘any one of a range of issues that may inevitably affect any complex item of consumer electronics’.
“So if there isn't one single thing that's causing thousands of machines to stop working, why does it appear that one single repair appears to get them working again?”
It’s worth noting that Sony has not stated that 12,5000 machines have suffered from the YLOD in the UK – it has only said that under 0.5 per cent of machines have experienced problems.
Meanwhile, The Guardian reports that last night’s episode, which is the second in the latest series, suffered a significant slump in viewers with 700,000 fewer people tuning in than the week before.

Here's something we're betting Sony will want to wish away using its "magic wand." Speaking with 1UP, Capcom producer Jun Takeuchi (Resident Evil 5) noted, "Speaking to other developers in Japan, I've heard a few of them say they were delighted by the Sony motion controller because they can just port over their Wii titles to the PS3."
We're going to be optimistic here and presume these devs are at least considering a fresh coat of pixels for their ports. It's probably of more concern that, outside of Nintendo's first-party offerings, we've yet to see many studios even get Wii motion control right. Somehow, it's hard to picture Sony saying, "Yes, we welcome your waggle-infused minigame compilations with open arms!" Then again, PS3 "does everything" -- maybe even Wii games.
