Sony Europe's head of developer relations, Zeno Colaco, has gone all USA-hardcore on Apple when it comes to how both companies deal with developers. This, of course, comes as Sony's PSP attempts to take on Apple's iPhone in the 'snackable' applications market.
Colaco starts by telling Develop, "Unlike with the App Store, we’re looking to support everyone that develops for us, instead of leaving developers out in the wilderness." Ouch.
But then Zeno slaps Apple AppStore devs as well, "I’m not suggesting that iPhone developers are unprofessional, but I think that the App Store has attracted a number of hobbyists. Clearly, the PSP is designed for gaming." Ouch.
So, how is Sony going to avoid having a bunch of rank amateurs all over its platform? Easy, "We’re not immediately interested in giving developers free access and no help", charging for development.

Last week, a European demo of Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! What Did I Do to Deserve This? was released on PSN, requiring PSP firmware 5.55 to run. One minor issue: firmware 5.55 isn't available for download. That means that the Badman demo is effectively exclusive to people who bought Dissidia Final Fantasy or Soulcalibur Broken Destiny, two games that have the new firmware on the disc. What did Holy Invasion of Privacy, Badman! do to deserve this?
NIS's Allison Walter outlined the company's plan to correct this unfortunate situation on the PlayStation Blog, inadvertently announcing the release of an upcoming firmware in the process. "We're going to re-release it next Thursday, 10 Sept," she said in response to user Killzone_Kid, "by which time Firmware 6.0 should have been released. Sorry for the wait!" You'll be repelling heroes from your subterranean lair in no time!

GameShastra has revealed that its games for the service will cost between $1.50 and $2.50.
While Sony has not yet confirmed the planned pricing window for the downloadable PSP Minis releases, developer GameShastra has revealed that its games for the service will cost customers between $1.50 and $2.50.
The pricing structure became apparent when GameShastra CEO Prakash Ahuja spoke with Indian Videogamer. GameShastra, which also develops for all the major console platform holders, has an apparent 30 games underway for the PSPgo's Minis service, all of which are due for release between October this year and January 2009.
ME sister site CasualGaming.biz predicted the low PSP Minis price point towards the end of last month.
The pricing positions the PSPgo as a direct rival to the iPhone, and puts Minis alongside Nintendo's DSiWare service, which was recently revealed to be implementing a new, low cost payment system.

Sony UK's sales director Mark Howsen has told GamesIndustry.biz that first week sales of the PlayStation slim have exceeded expectations.
The new unit went on sale last Tuesday in the region priced at GBP 249, with Chart-Track data revealing today that sales were up over 1000 per cent.
"The first week's Chart-Track numbers for sales of the new PlayStation 3 were ahead of our expectations, so we were extremely pleased," offered Howsen.
"A new price point and a new machine has proven a significant catalyst to help consumers make the move onto PS3."
Howsen said that the company intends to maintain momentum over the coming months with the new GBP 82 million ad campaign promoting the system, exclusive games and the recently announced PlayStation Video Store.
"Our new advertising campaign, The Game Is Just The Start, is also demystifying the value proposition," he said. "This ongoing campaign and the addition of some great exclusive and new IPs - Uncharted: Among Thieves, EyePet, Heavy Rain - and services [such as] PlayStation Video Store, will hopefully provide even more trigger points to drive future purchases of PlayStation 3."
The PlayStation 3 became the lead hardware format in the UK last week, a position it had not occupied since the first week of 2008.
Software sales for the system also jumped 17 per cent by unit share and 5 per cent in terms of value, with Activision's Call of Duty: World at War shooting back up the charts to number three due to bundled promotions.

Kazuyuki Inakoshi, manager of Akihabara's Messe Sanoh, doesn't pull any punches in his Famitsu.com column about the recent PS3 Slim launch. In short: The launch could have been smoother.
"If you are talking about the basic demand for the newly designed PS3, it seemed so-so," Inakoshi blogs. There was no line in front of his landmark Akihabara shop, he writes, and the first customer on that day did not buy a PS3 Slim, but a copy of Konami DS dating sim title Love Plus.
Inakoshi pegs three things as the problem: "Lack of preparation, lack of recognition and a weekday launch". The ad campaign didn't seem to help, either — Inakoshi calls it "creepy".
The shop did sell out of the PS3 Slim stand; however, that seems to be because Sony did not provide enough product. The one good thing Sony Computer Entertainment did? The company was able to help Messe Sanoh set up a demo kiosk of the new Gundam Senki title, which appears to help the shop sell through all copies of the game as well as the PS3 Slim Gundam bundle.

Sony has confirmed it is "aware" of problems being experienced by PlayStation 3 users following the installation of firmware v3.00 and says it is looking into the matter.
In a post on its official US blog Sony's senior director of corporate communications and social media, Patrick Seybold, said the company was aware of "isolated issues" being experienced by users after installing the most recent system software update.
"Rest assured that we are looking into the matter and will provide an update here as soon as possible," said Seybold. "We apologise for any inconvenience, as it's our mission to deliver the best consumer experience on all PlayStation platforms."
Since the new firmware's release on September 1, a number of technical problems have been reported by users via forums, including game crashes and not being able to sync up controllers.
The firmware introduced a number of features and improvements to the console, including new trophy and friends list features, dashboard themes and support for new avatars.

Chart-Track has told GamesIndustry.biz that sales of the PlayStation 3 have rocketed over 999 per cent in the past week, shifting eleven times the number of units sold the prior week.
Sony introduced the new, slimmer SKU last Tuesday, and although Chart-Track does not reveal actual sales numbers, Dorian Bloch, director of the firm called the growth "a huge increase".
"The uplift on week 36 on week 35 is plus 999 per cent," revealed Bloch. "We don't give out the hardware numbers, but never-the-less it's a very large increase."
The boost in sales will be a pleasing early start to the Christmas season for Sony, which told GamesIndustry.bizlast month that it expected the redesign to pull in new consumers.
"I think what I've heard anecdotally is that this is the point people were waiting for - a redesigned model and, in Euros, a significant price reduction," said Andrew House, president of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe. "That's people's cue to jump into the business."
The PlayStation 3 has been remodelled earlier in the its lifecycle than the PlayStation 2. The PS2 slim, released in the 44th week of 2004, helped sales jump 310 per cent.
Chart-Track also said that last week the PS3 outsold the DS, Wii and Xbox 360 by approximately 3:1. It's the first time this year that Sony's home console has been the lead hardware format in the UK – it last held in the lead in the first week of 2008.
PS3 software sales have increased by 17 per cent in terms of units over week 35 to claim third place behind Xbox 360 and Wii, while in terms of value software sales have increased by 5 per cent to remain second behind 360 games.
The news follows a climb in Xbox 360 sales of 43 per cent last week, due to the price cut for the Elite model to GBP 199.
This week, sales for the Elite were still up in the region, said Chart-Track, an increase of 29 per cent over last week's growth.

The new slim PlayStation 3 has sold over 150,000 units in three days in Japan, marking its highest sales in the region to date.
According to the latest figures from Enterbrain, the console sold 150,252 slim units (150,832 units in total) during the period August 31 - September 6, reports Kotaku. Comparing the figures to Media Create data for the week prior, when the console sold just 1040 units, the increase marks a huge leap.
The slim console even outperforms the launch of the original PlayStation 3 when, due to shortage issues in the region, 88,000 consoles were sold in the first two days.
UK data revealed earlier today showed the new slimline console is performing similarly well here with a 999 per cent increase in sales recorded following last week's release.

Edward Nigma: Fantastic Fanboy, is a homebrew fan-game for the psp, a visual media text-type video game developed by Team Zero.
Edward Nigma is based around debate/information gamplay. This game is completely presented in 2d and using manga/comic-like sprites. Where the user would navigate Edward around a convention to interact with other characters. Some of whom would be friendly and others, fanatical fanboys, be hostile towards the player. Edward would have to do battle with these "fanboys" to defend his honor. Topics would stem from a wide selection of subjects in Popular Culture. The story itself is based on the fan-fictionalized adventures of a young, Edward Nigma, who would later be known as The Riddler from Batman fame. This is of course a demo of what we have outlined and don't plan on going further at this very moment, due to time and cost restrictions. We very much hope you enjoy the work we have put together on this project and have fun.
Story
Edward is a product tester of new nano-technology, developed by WayneTech, he is sent to Japan to deliver the now tested and approved final build of the techology for final production. Nigma being the nerd at heart, takes advantage of the situation, and decides to use the trip as an excuse to travel around Japan to fulfill his fanboy fantasies.
These adventures have him going to Anime Conventions, Marketplaces and other locals in search of all things nerdy.

Many of you surely will use the Unofficial gpSP Kai Game Boy Advance emulator for PSP developed by Japanese coder Takka and based on the sources of the draft exophase. Now an anonymous developer, yet the Japanese release an improved version of the homebrew called Takka gpSP-J. The usual changelog in native language does not allow us to ascertain the novelty introduced by this release, you just need to experience firsthand the emulator and see if any improvements over the already excellent Unofficial gpSP of Takka.

DekraN user of our forums, issue a further update on his homebrew AlphaBase a bash debug your PSP. In this release, the 2.3, were added the following commands: 'asrt' and 'sys'. Were then fixed some bugs in the program and was also further optimized the code homebrew. I remember AlphaBase is completely open-source.
Following the full changelog and the link to download.
Changelog v2.3:
Quote:
- Added the commands 'asrt' and 'sys';
- Fixato a bug in the command 'share', which required the parameter (ADHOC) superabundant;
- Fixato a bug in the command 'Ninfo', which is not allowed to enter the ID of the file;
- Syntax of language optimized;
- Code optimized;
- Now the separator parameter in File (FPS) can be set by Settings.ini or directly through the shell command "ochar 1 fps";
- Added a system of pseudo-label. Now in command 'goto' you can directly enter the entire line of reference. Before printing screen so important information, remember to print a label without spaces and easy to remember, so that we can then reach the concerned Range typing "goto label";
- Added color management system (CMS). Now you can print a line using the system colors. The main color of the system can now also be modified through the shell command "sys color" (the color of course, must first be loaded using the command 'load');
- Now the colors can not be removed from memory using the command 'unload', as they are widely used by the program, but not a great burden to the stack;
- Optimize the commands 'load', 'unload', 'loadex', 'print' and 'helper';
- Optimizing security environment. Now, if a user is not a top level can not manipulate the variables related to the management of users via command 'exec';

It's not a straight up rebuttal, but apparently Sony corporate is singing a different tune than what we heard from a Sony rep on the floor of IFA (multiple times) the other day: that all existing PS3 games would be playable in 3D after the software update next year. According to Sony, it's "conducting a technological investigation" as to the possibility of this, but claims there's "no plan for the market launch of this at this time." It makes sense that many titles -- especially ones designed with widely divergent game engines -- would be incompatible with a simple software update, but details are slim on how Sony is adding this function to its own games in the first place, so we'll have to wait to find out more. We do know the PS3 is going 3D in 2010, but as for available titles it looks like we're going to be in the dark for the time being -- though Ubisoft's upcoming Avatar game, along with a couple of Sony racing titles, are already shoe-ins for 3D presentation of some form.
