Sony Computer Entertainment America has reported a 300 per cent increase in PlayStation 3 sales following the September 1 launch of the new PS3 Slim.
"Our top retailers have reported a 300 per cent lift in PS3 hardware sales and an increase of 140 per cent in total hardware revenue across the PlayStation portfolio when comparing the first week of September to the week before the $299 price adjustment," the company said in a statement.
The console's success since the launch of the PS3 Slim has not been limited to the US market. The PS3 Slim's release drove an 11-fold increase in weekly UK PS3 sales and a 17 per cent increase in PS3 software sales, while the console recorded record weekly sales in Japan following its debut.
During August, North American PS3 sales rose 72 per cent over July levels, to 210,000 units, boosted by the introduction of price cuts across the PS3 range on August 18. A number of retailers also began selling the new PS3 Slim model a week ahead of its official September 1 release date.
SCEA also said that the "best is yet to come," noting that it is gearing up for "one of the best content line-ups in its history." PS3 system exclusives including God Of War III, Gran Turismo 5, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves and Ratchet & Clank Future: A Crack In Time will launch for the platform over the next seven months "With more than 25 exclusive titles slated through the holiday and into early next year, these games are just the tip of the iceberg. No other entertainment device is better positioned for this holiday."
