Ubisoft's CEO Yves Guillemot and EA Games president Frank Gibeau have both praised Sony for cutting the price of the PlayStation 3, making the home console an attractive prospect for the mass market consumer.
"It's exceptional news, actually. I think the machine is a great machine, with the Blu-ray,” commented Guillemot, speaking to GamesIndustry.biz. "I'm happy that they were able to move to that [price point], particularly in the UK."
Sony has reduced the price of its console to EUR 299 in mainland Europe, and GBP 249 in the UK with immediate effect, ahead of the release of slimmer unit due in the first week of September.
"I think it's awesome," enthused Gibeau. "It's an old line, but it still rings true for us: 'We make the ammunition for the hardware wars'. So the lowest priced hardware possible is a good thing for us. We want to see as big and broad a base as possible, and the Sony hardware is a good piece of equipment."
The redesign will help the PlayStation 3 shift more units in Europe, said Guillemot – a positive for Sony as well as the industry as a whole – as it now becomes a more attractive purchase to a mass market consumer.
"It's also going to be a smaller machine, and I think this will help Sony and the whole industry - because everybody will react, and so we'll be able to see it come to the mass market," he said.
Gibeau agreed that the new price will allow publishers to reach more consumers. "Getting into that price point is just going to expand the market for us, especially in Europe. We have a lot of PS3 games, we're a good supporter of Sony, we believe in the platform. We've got a lot of PSP games coming, and frankly we also support the PlayStation Network with direct-to-consumer releases.
"So we're strong, committed partners of Sony and I'm extremely excited about the Slim - I think it looks great. And the price point will be hot."
Lower prices will help the current console market sustain a longer lifecycle, said Gibeau, meaning publishers and developers can concentrate on existing hardware rather than invest in future technology.
"The good news is that we still have a lot of price points to go yet - Nintendo, Microsoft and Sony - which points to a longer cycle for hardware this time around. And again, for us it's great, because we don't have to go out and build a whole new set of engines for next-gen," he said.

August 20th, 2009, 17:12 Posted By: wraggster
Sony's European president Andrew House has said the firm is confident the high price of the PSPgo will not put off early adopters of the system, although he admitted there is a significant gap between the current PSP-3000 model and the new digital handheld set to launch in October.
The PSPgo will retail in the UK for GBP 224.99 and Europe for EUR 249. However, Sony hopes the free offer of the highly-anticipated and long in development Gran Turismo for PSP will help sweeten the deal for consumers.
"I think, clearly, there is a delta there between PSPgo and the existing PSP-3000," offered House, speaking to VG247.
"We, at least for Europe, were very keen to put an initial offer in place that would reward the consumer who jumps on board first. Therefore, I think the offer that we announced yesterday, that those initial purchasers will be able to get GT for PSP absolutely free. I think that goes a long way to addressing that," he said.
And closer to the launch of the console, Sony is likely to announce plans for users who already have a library of UMD games to port them to the new handheld, although full details of any deal are still under wraps.
"We’re also looking at some other plans further down the line that will come together for launch around people who have existing UMD libraries and what we can do to incentivise those as well.
"So, I think that and a combination of what is a really very attractive portable device leaves us feeling fairly confident where we are right now," added House.
Sony also hopes the PSPgo can attract a younger audience, with the recently announced European PSN vouchers a way of ensuring teenage consumers can buy digital content without the need for a credit card.
"Because as PSPgo, as portable device, potentially brings in a younger audience than there has been on the PSN to date. Clearly, we need to have a solution to those two things that will still ensure that at retail stores there is product that people can see, and know what’s hot and know what they want to buy.
"I can turn to my 14 year-old and say 'You’ve got your own money, you choose what you want to buy on the network so go buy a voucher.' So, I think that was another important message," said House.

Art has updated his entry into the Neoflash Summer 2009 coding comp
Hi Guys,
Here is my application entry for the Neoflash coding competition.
Since there are no other entries yet, it looks like I'm first so far.
Nickname: Art
Project name : AVEC
From : Australia
Division : PSP APP
Original entry : YES
Support Motion : NO
In last NEO Compo this project have won in the top 10 : NO
Description:
AVEC V2 GPS Vector Map Viewer for PSP
AVEC is a Vector map viewer capable of displaying and navigating maps
in the common Polish format maps.
The 1.50 kernel version can also receive location from a GPS device and
display your location on the map.
If the map file has street information, the program tells you what street
you are in, or lookup the name of a street selected with the crosshair.
The 1.50 version should be installed to GAME150. If you have a GPS setup
for MapThis! it will be compatible since it uses the same GPS routines.
The newer firmwares version should be installed to PSP/GAME352 or
PSP/GAME5xx, etc.

Kasumi has posted an entry into the Neoflash Summer 2009 coding comp
Nickname: Kasumi
Projet name: Lakeside
From: United States
Division: PSP GAME
Support Motion: NO
Original entry: YES
In last NEO Compo this project have won in the top 10: NO
Lakeside is a project I've been working on for a while now. I'm a bit sad because there's next to no gameplay at the moment. I'll try get something up for tomorrow though. It's a very cool little map editor right now though.
A video of one of the maps.:
A video of the sprite Editor:
There are videos of other parts of the map editor, but they're much different now.
Please at least read the readme. If you want to use the map editor, read everything else. I rushed this link up in time, but since I most likely still have tomorrow there's some other documentation I need to add. (Features to come, and more known bugs) And I'll try to get a demo with REAL gameplay done by tomorrow. No promises on that.
For now on the map that's loaded when the game is started there are only really a few things you can do besides talk to everyone.
1. Find all three enterable buildings. (Yep, just three).
2. Get the one item available
As for the included maps, Mapset 0, map 1 is a way to see the tiles in each set. Mapset 0, map 2 is my script test room. (Disable the Map Editor after its loaded to see the text). Alternative Open Map 6 with the debug menu so you don't have to enable and disable the map editor. If you read through the text there and see how it works, it may help understand the scripts. Or... it may just confuse you.

Now you can use your psp as a metronome which is designed with nice background and some options to suit the elegance of the psp.
To download pls copy paste the following link in your web browser:
http://www2.zippyshare.com/v/2182158...]Metronome.zip
This is a Lua based metronome, hence you have to extract the folder in the game/luaplayer/ folder using winzip. Do not drag drop the file in the destination folder, rather extract it to the destination folder as the script.lua needs to be in the destination folder and rest of the files need to be in the folder named "Metronome".
It has worked fine in Luaplayer V.18 and in my psp slim (2000), although i had to replace the luaplayer/Eboot.pbp with the LuaPlayerHM v3 Eboot.pbp for the V.18 to work.
If you face problems regarding lua send me an email and i will send you luaplayer and luaplayer% along with the other files so that you don't have to worry about which luaplayer to use and all you have to do is put the folders in the game folder.

Our very own Uberjack the coder of so many emulators for the PSP posted this on his site:
While I don’t plan on porting anything new anytime soon (although release of VICE PSP has flooded me with requests for an Atari ST emulator ), I do plan to release sporadic updates for the emulators I currently have out. Software development as a hobby is a double-edged sword – not being compelled to program tends to be a good motivator to program anyway, but when the learning ends, so does the desire to program for a particular platform/purpose. Go figure…
fMSX PSP is probably next in line for a revamp – some of you may be aware that it is my personal favorite emulator (as is the system itself). The usual update to psplib is planned, but two things I feel have been long overdue are improved MegaROM autoselection, and even more importantly, a better saved state format. Because of the unpredictability of save states, I lost my SD Snatcher progress mid-way. Grrr…
At some point, Caprice32 will be updated, but no idea when – the emulator hasn’t been updated for years, and my port doesn’t seem to be popular enough to warrant a rewrite.
Since the release of RACE! PSP, I consider NeoPop dead, so it will not receive rewrites unless something magical happens.

DekraN has posted an entry into the Neoflash Summer 2009 coding comp
Jo people, this is my PSP app for the coding contest.
Nickname: DekraN
Project name: AlphaBase
From: Italy
Divison: PSP App
Original entry: Yes
Support Motion: No
In last NEO Compo this project have won in the top 10: No
Description:
AlphaBase is a "simple" PSP-Bash which may help you for debugging your PSP,
even if, it may be used as a normal shell, just for the commands simple usage.
Readme:
Quote
Installation:
Just copy this folder (AlphaBase HM7) in PSP/GAME/
and if you want, look up for set main vars into SETTINGS.ini
A-Base is a lua-well-coded PSP Bash, made just for
debug all PSP Parts (or almost...), even if initially
it would be another PSP IDE... (anyway just look the
q-list system for this...)
In this first release commands are highly experimental,
so, don't you expect more of my scripting capacities
in this programme. I've personally tested a lot of function,
even if not all and they work perfectly
I've performed and charged a lot the "plist" command,
it is now more powerfull and lua-readable
(it tooks me one week to finish this...).
The P.S.E.R. parameters (Path Single Extension Requires)
have the noextension proof system, so, you can safely
omit the extension; however, it's highly recommended
to put it in any case to increase the execution speed.
Commands Helper: if you forgot the usage of a command,
just type it without parameters and A.B. will provide
to display you the usageprint and more informations
about the interested PSP parts; somehow just be carefull that
some commands have the shortcut system (pre-imposted parameters)
so they can execute unappropriate code for you.
A-Base is an object-based environment, so you can easily load
any element by typing "load [ELEMENT]" and use it for example
fontprinting a string using the font loaded.
'unload' command doesnt guarantee the effective unloading of
an elements (because some elements cannot be unloaded in any case),
but it just free the memory from the element-address.
You can simply get more information about the elements used
by typing "input (ID) (ID2)" where ID is the ID of the group
(0 for AlphaBase prints, 1 for User prints, 2 for Images,
3 for Rectangles (which aren't considered lines), 4 for Lines,
and 5 for Timers). You can also delete an User Execution
(did by imm, print, ... commands) by typing "reset (ID) (ID2)"
If command gets no param, it will provide to reset all the groups,
else if it gets only one param, it will reset only the ID group
(look up from the ID's list).
To get PSP Information and all, just type 'info'. For cmdlist
type 'cmd'. Other usefull stuffs are the current file system
and the current directory, respectively the one can be set by
'file' 'cmd, while the second by 'dir'. So, if current file is
'example.pbp', if you do 'eboot' AB will setup the first parameter
as the current file, while the Current Directory
just sets the working folder. You can also set the programme mode,
right the normal and the extended. The normal mode is more powerfull
and has a lot of function, while the extended gives more information
in AlphaBase prints. For the detailed COMMANDS LIST just see cmdlist.txt
Regards, Wesker.

I've wanted a PlayStation 3 since forever. It plays Blu-ray movies, it has some great exclusive titles, and it looks like it could beat somebody up without breaking a sweat across its glossy matte brow. But it's always seemed out of reach price-wise. As my desire grew stronger over recent months, I found myself unable to pull the trigger: I just didn't want to pay $400 for a video game console that came out in 2006. The fact that I could get a lot more for my $400 than $500 would've gotten me at launch was hardly consolation, given that the PS3's main competition, the Xbox 360, has been available in a "full fledged" edition for $300 for a while. Luckily, the PS3 Slim has come at last to save me from all this heartache. Follow along, as I journey from the mire of indecision to the glories of console love... but really, it's all about the price drop.

Weighing in at just over 3.5 kilograms, the PS3 Slim is a sleek, streamlined piece of gaming hardware. How appropriate is it, then, that the first bundle for this new technology features gigantic robot suits, whose pointy appendages and general largeness serve as a thought-provoking foil to Sony's new console design? Not very appropriate, you say? Hmph. What do you know?
Japanese games blog AndriaSang recently uncovered the "Kidou Senshi Gundam Senki Gundam 30th Anniversary Box," a PS3 Slim bundle which contains Namco's upcoming mech-fest, Kidou Senshi Gundam Senki, as well as a few download codes for some additional in-game content, and an HD animated Gundam film. Seems odd the first bundle wouldn't include a AAA first-party title -- but hey, it's Japan. They love Gundam more than we love anything or anyone on this planet over there.
Another point of interest: the Slim's new branding is also carrying over to PS3 game box art.

Somewhere between the time Sony removed backwards compatibility from the previous PS3, and we knew there'd be a new PS3, people got to hoping that the feature would be brought back in the PS3 Slim. It hasn't.
Put a PS2 disc into the PS3 Slim and it won't play. Which for some will mean nothing, but for others, will mean a great deal. If that's you, and you're after an explanation, SCEA's director of marketing John Koller has one.
"Now that we're at a point where we're three years into the lifecycle of the PS3," he told us earlier today, "there are so many PS3 disc-based games that are available that we think — and noticed this from our research — that most consumers that are purchasing the PS3 cite PS3 games as a primary [reason]".
"And it's not just like 50 or 60 percent. It's well into the 80 or 90 percentile range who are purchasing it for PS3 [games]. We do know that there are next gen consumers wanting to come over the the PS3. Most of those are consumers who have not utilized their PS2 for a little while and they're ready to jump into the PlayStation 3."
Shame. A predictable shame, but a shame nonetheless.

EEDAR offers a cautious word of optimism on Sony’s redesigned console
Sony’s new PS3 will help the console close the sales gap currently enjoyed by Microsoft’s Xbox 360, according to EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich
“The new PS3 pricing scheme finally makes the Sony console a much more competitive product, relative to its closest rival, the Xbox 360,” he stated.
However, Divnich warned that price and specs are just two variables amongst many, and that there are still plenty of questions left to be answered.
“In terms of value, the PS3 is a superior hardware product in comparison to the Xbox 360," the analyst added.
"However, this is not to suggest that hardware sales will suddenly shift to Sony's favour – a superior hardware system is only one variable in the equation for next-generation success.
“Nevertheless, the PlayStation 3 price cut will act as a positive catalyst that will close the sales gap between the PS3 and Xbox 360.”
