In order to dissuade recent PS3 buyers from returning their systems in exchange for newer, slimmer ones, Best Buy is reportedly offering a free game to customers who come in for such an exchange.
According to our tipster, who snapped the picture above (Kotaku also claims to have verified the story), Best Buy sent out an internal memo instructing employees to try to convince customers not to return their recent purchases for Slims with the offer of a free copy of either inFamous, Killzone 2, or MLB 09. The memo also states that there is no official "street date" for the system, so it could be out on the shelf already.
Is a free game sufficient salve for the burn of just missing out on a Slim? Or will irate customers with valid receipts ignore the offer entirely in pursuit of a less monolithic console? If you are in the position of having just bought a PS3, do let us know if this sends you scrambling back to Best Buy in search of some kind of better buy.
And if you're a high-level Sony executive, don't (try to) hide your immediate plans from your consumers. As it turns out, people like being informed about the things they're planning to buy. Nobody would have bought a PS3 in the last couple of weeks if we had known about the Slim, and there wouldn't be any emergency programs like this as a result of it.

ShopTo has told Eurogamer that sales of PS3 Slim are forbidden here by Sony until 1st September - the date announced at gamescom.
That squashes any hope of an early purchase. In the US, however, stock is already on shelves and being sold, as Kotaku points out.
ShopTo boss Igor Cipolletta said he expects a truckload of consoles to arrive tomorrow and can ship the machines as soon as Friday, as he runs a mail-order retail outlet.
The smaller, lighter and less power-hungry PS3 Slim was unveiled at the Sony gamescom 2009 conference. The PS3 Slim costs £249.
To get a better idea of its size, watch us un-box a PS3 Slim on the gamescom show floor and very nearly run away with it.

Put away black mourning clothes, PSP owners, there's life yet in them thar UMDs. When the PSP Go was announced it seemed like there was little time left for the plucky (and generally disliked) format, and indications that Sony had planned to ditch it "since the very beginning" were further nails in its apparent coffin. But now, according to a particularly reliable tipster (who accurately predicted the PS3 Slim in June, right down to the inclusion of proper buttons), there's a PSP-4000 inbound that will still sport a UMD drive. According to the tip this new machine will live along-side the Go, but little is known beyond that... other than it's apparently "nothing to actually get excited about." Tell that to the kids with the Lumines discs rattling away in the spokes of their bicycles.

Did Dirty Harry ever need a second Model 29 to mop up the streets? No sir. Likewise, you'll get by just fine with one PS3 motion controller on your person. "We are approaching the launch [of the PlayStation motion controller] by making sure that all games that we create can be played with one controller and the camera," Sony boss Shuhei Yoshida assured penny-pinching purchasers during a recent interview with Eurogamer.
Of course, adding a second motion controller to your loadout could really make the magic happen: "It's like putting your arms into the TV, like a gaming space, and you have total control of the 3D space in front of you," Yoshida described of the experience of dual wanding.
Woah. Did anyone else just feel that? For a second there we were totally transported into the fourth dimension.

The upcoming PSP port of Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars will be available -- in both UMD and PSP Go-friendly downloadable formats -- on October 20th. Rockstar Games still hasn't shown what kind of enhancements will be made to the one-time DS game, nor have they released any screenshots of the game in action. We understand Rockstar's penchant for secrecy, but considering this is one of the few titles 2K Games has planned for the holiday season, we recommend they get the hype-wagon (pictured above) revved up soon.

Okay, first off I'm sure you have have heard other sites talk about this subject before and also some of you may remember my news post for an unbranded 3600mah fake over here. However, I'm going to share this with all at DCEmu UK anyway...
Today, my 2200mah battery arrived at my doorstep just a week after I ordered it from eBay. Here's what it looked like inside the wrapper...
...and the reverse side too. Looks official all round. However, after opening the packaging and picking up the battery to test the weight and finding it light and hollow on around the top, I knew it wasn't going to last long when used.
Here below is my old 1800mah battery side-by-side with the so-called 2200mah one and the reversed sides.
Since it was cheap at £4.37 with free shipping, I proceeded to open up the 2200mah battery. Result? Look below and see...
Inside the flimsy shell is a small cell pack which really holds around 900mah, about 35% smaller than an official cell pack. What a joke. No wonder it only lasted about 2 hourd or less in my 1004 series PSP even when fully charged up set at 222mHz clock speed, lowest brightness with a UMD being played compared to my old 1800mah one at 3-4 or so hours. (An official 1800mah cell pack fills out the entire shell which can be tough to break into and has a bigger internal circuit board too.)
These days, for owners of the 1000 series PSP particulary, the batteries that came with their machines from the start are most probably wearing out, probably holding about 70% or less of charge as they used to. Then there's owners of the 2000/3000 model who may want some more runtime from their machines and the 1000 series batteries would fit the bill for that. In short, finding genuine batteries is becoming more and more difficult.
If anyone's on the scrounge for genuine spare PSP 1000 series batteries (PSP-110), just be careful on eBay or anywhere else even. If a price looks too good, it's most likely a fake. One could try asking the seller if they're genuine and maybe get them to provide photos of proof. Oh also remember that many fakes aren't pandorable like this one.
Remember, if in doubt, even with free shipping don't bother buying as if it turns out a fake, you've wasted about £5 or so on something worthless which could have been better spent on better things like lunch, stuff at the local store or a couple of pints at the pub.

Sick of looking at these same Final Fantasy Versus XIII screen shots? Yeah. Me too. Well, the good news is that development on Final Fantasy XIII is doing wonders for that other Fabula Nova Crystallis entry, according to the developer.
Square Enix's Yoshinori Kitase told us at Gamescom this week that development time on Final Fantasy Versus XIII will be "comparatively faster" than that of the core entry, Final Fantasy XIII. That reassuring update to the more action-oriented entry in the Fabula Nova Crystallis project came after Kitase said that the time to model characters and enemies in FFXIII was taking about one-third the time it did at the beginning of the project.
We knew that some Versus team members had been pulled off that project to work on XIII, and Kitase said that the team's "knowledge and experience" gained from their work will help ensure Versus is out faster.
If Kitase's "comparatively faster" estimate is accurate, we'll hopefully see Versus XIII by 2011, give or take, since the game and Final Fantasy XIII have been in development for at least five years, maybe more. Still a long way out, but at least Final Fantasy XIV should be out by then, giving fans something to do in the in-between.

via Kotaku
With the Playstation 3 Slim starting to show up at Best Buys around the country, the national retailer has kicked off a plan to try and cut-down on the number of people returning a recent PS3 for the newer PS3 Slim, sourced tell Kotaku.
An internal memo, verified independently by a number of employees at different stores, shows that Best Buy is offering people who come into the story to exchange recently purchased Playstation 3's for the newly released PS3 Slim a choice of a free Playstation 3 title and price match in lieu of the new slimmer, larger-hard-drive sporting console.
Due to the interest in the new Slim model, the memo warns, stores may see people trying to return their console for the newer model. Before doing the exchange, a store is allowed to offer a choice of a free copy of Infamous, MLB 09 The Show or Killzone 2. Not a bad selection, but is it worth more than the smaller footprint and bigger hard drive?
It's important to note that this isn't an advertised sale, it's an internal memo, so it may be up to the store manager's discretion how often to offer the deal. I'd also assume that this would only hold for Playstation 3's purchased within the past 30 days and with a valid receipt.
We've contacted Sony and Best Buy for confirmation. If this is true, I think it's just further evidence of a console war heating up to deliver plenty of great deals for gamers on both sides of the fence.

August 25th, 2009, 18:36 Posted By: wraggster
Sony Computer Entertainment boss Kaz Hirai has said that PlayStation 3's success cannot be judged after less than three years on the market.
"If you look at the growth of the installed base, it is slower than the PS2 was but it's pretty much on track with the growth that we had with the original PlayStation," Hirai told The Times.
"We also always look at our business as being a 10-year lifecycle for all of our platforms. It's kind of difficult to say whether a platform has been successful or not going into our third anniversary. The fifth anniversary and beyond is when we really start to say how's our trajectory looking?"
Last week Sony's European boss Andrew House confirmed that worldwide PS3 sales stood at 23.7 million since the console's November 2006 launch. Xbox 360 launched a year earlier and has sold over 30 million.
Hirai also rejected suggestions that DVD and even Blu-ray may be on the way out as digital distribution becomes more prominent.
"The death of physical media is a very nice conclusion, that seems to be nice to say, but it’s not something we're going to see soon," he said, pointing out that even in a few years' time 40GB PS3 games will take ages to download.
Sony will become the first platform holder to launch a digital-only console in October when the PSPgo launches, but Hirai said Sony was "committed" to maintaining the PSP-3000 and UMD businesses in spite of that - partly because of the need to continue serving customers in countries without the same rates of broadband growth.
"We're not going to deprive consumers in all those other countries," he said.

It's the general consensus that Wii was the console that opened up gaming to a whole new audience of mainstream gaming with its friendly Remote and cooking sims. But PlayStation boss Kazuo Hirai disagrees.
"It's a very astute observation, but it doesn't take in history," said Hirai. "The most successful console is still the PS2 and it's still going strong.
"I think that's the console that really broke the barrier from video games being just for video gamers into more of a mass market on a global basis. Nintendo's obviously done a great job in following that mass acceptance," Hirai told Times Online.

What's it they say, "You never hear about a drug deal gone good?" Same for selling games. In this case, an unhappy customer took a Utah teen for a ride when the PSP that changed hands didn't work as advertised.
The suspect's now in custody, so, this ends well. But it began badly, on Saturday, when a 17-year-old sold his PSP to one Jose Eduardo Espinosa-Arellano of American Fork, Utah, who took it home and said the thing didn't work right.
He went back to confront the seller and demand his money back, but for whatever reason, that wasn't happening. So Espinosa-Arellano said, "Let's go for a ride," and the kid, saying he was defusing the situation but really lacking some common sense, went along.
That ride went for about 20 miles up the road to Salt Lake City, while the victim texted some friends to say, well, whatever was said, certainly the message began "OMFG." When the driver exited the interstate and came to a stop at a red light, the victim bolted and ran to a gas station.
"The suspect made comments to him were very concerning to the victim," a law enforcement spokesman said. "He felt like he was in grave danger, and that's the reason he jumped out of the car."
Espinosa-Arellano was arrested and taken to jail. He could face kidnapping charges.

Since the console launched in 2006 until the official announcement of the new, slimmer machine, the PS3 has been written in the same font used for Sony's Spider-Man 3 movie.
What's more, the official way to type out the name was in ALL CAPS.
The new console iteration ditches both in favor of either the PlayStation 3 or simply the PS3. There's new font, too! When asked by The Times why the font was changed, Sony Computer Entertainment exec Kaz Hirai replied that the company wanted to "set a new direction for the PS3." And what better what to do that than by resetting the logo, Hirai asked.
The new PS3 Slim — which Sony is selling at a loss — also helps Sony transition into a new chapter in the PS3's lifespan.
The logo change, however, was inspired more than merely giving the console a re-start. "On a practical level, when you have PlayStation 3 spelt out, the aspect ratio was such that if you wanted it on a billboard it became tiny," Hirai said. "It didn't work in terms of visibility." Thank tiny text for for killing the Spider-Man font. Thank you, tiny text.

PS3 firmware 3.0, apparently. That's what PlayStation Network operations director Eric Lempel said, and he should know. He is the PlayStation Network operations director.
"You know, I wouldn't say that or sure just yet because we are working on some things," Lempel told G4. "But this is a big and significant update, so you would be correct to assume that [it's the last major update for 2009]."
Don't surprised if there are smaller firmware updates, and heck, don't even be surprised if there's another big firmware update. Just don't be surprised. Be happy.

What do we have here, you ask? Why, it's the Sony PS3 Slim, and it's available for purchase at this here Best Buy in Brandon, Florida -- a full day before Amazon ships ours. And you said you'd never go back to Brandon! A reader picked one up along with Arkham Asylum, and was good enough to share his haul with us (and with the world) via the Twitter. If you're in the area, you might want to make a quick trip out to the box store before the global PS3 Slim shortage hits. More photographic evidence after the break.

Launch titles for the PlayStation 3 motion controller will be compatible with either one controller or two, Sony president Shuhei Yoshida has told Eurogamer.
"We are approaching the launch by making sure that all games that we create can be played with one controller and the camera," he revealed.
"We will also introduce options for if you happen to have more than one controller available. Experiences will be enhanced if you purchase a second. We are trying to make the entry barrier as low as possible, but I'm looking forward to introducing more advanced things you can do with having two in your hands."
By combining the PlayStation camera, which many users will already own, with advanced sensors internally, said Yoshida, Sony will hit the right balance between cost and features. The technology will still be cutting edge but the choice to buy just one new controller will make that technology more cost-effective for consumers.
Continuing onto the subject of PSPgo, Yoshida said the new console was launched more for the "targeting and positioning of contents for the PSP platform than the technical aspect of things."
"Apple has proven that there are lots of people willing to try things out if it's very easy to download and an affordable price," he added.
UMDs can hold more than 1GB, he pointed out, and a lot of PSP's games already use the maximum limit. "The user experience of downloading 1GB game to PSPgo is not ideal," he said. "We wanted to send a message that you don't necessarily have to use all the content to the capacity of the media - you can create more content and sell for cheaper price."
Sony is working on improving the entry barrier to development for the handheld, Yoshida said. It has lowered the price of the PSP toolkit, and now is working on improvements that will make it an easier experience for developers to get a game onto the market. "We are still working on that side," he admitted.
