The price difference between the PSP-3000 and the PSPgo? In Japan, about a hundred bucks. But, no sweat, Sony's not worried.
When asked if there was concern that the price gap between the PSP-3000 and the PSPgo would push Japanese consumers towards the less expensive PSP-3000, Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida told Kotaku, "That's fine. We have no intention to stop producing the PSP-3000."
As the company's continued support of the PS2 has shown, Sony is not one to kill off older hardware — especially when there is still a market for it, as there is in The Land of the Rising Sun.
The UMD format will continue to be produced by Sony, Yoshida said. "New games will be released in both UMD and digital formats," he added. Those who own a PSP-3000 will be able to pick up the hard copy, while those with the PSPgo can purchase the digital version. "However, some small games aren't getting a UMD release," Yoshida conceded. According to Sony, the major titles will be getting released on both platforms — take the upcoming Gran Turismo on the PSP, for example.
While digital and UMD formats provide a sharp divide between to the PSP-3000 and the PSPgo, Sony did explore ways to enable users to bring their UMD titles to the PSPgo.
"We seriously looked into solutions," Yoshida said. As Kotaku broke earlier, legal and technical issues regarding publishing and rights have prevented Sony from bringing that UMD solution to market.
"We will continue supporting the UMD format," Yoshida stated.

What could possibly cause nearly 700 comments on an official Sony blog post announcing the relatively minor 3.01 firmware update for the PS3? Plaudits? A Kanye meme gone awry? No, it's the age old problem of an update that apparently breaks more than it fixes. In this case, a sizable number of users are reporting that the 3.0 and/or 3.01 update caused their PS3's Blu-ray drive to be all but unusable for both games and Blu-ray movies (although some folks report that DVDs still work). Other users are also reporting intermittent problems like no sound, and some problems with specific games, but it does seem like the complaints are pretty widespread and, as of yet, Sony isn't saying much about them. Bitten by the upgrade bug yourself? Let us know in comments.

Sony has used the Tokyo Game Show to unveil PlayStation Room, a downsized version of the PS3 virtual social space Home. While details about the service are sparse, Room is apparently designed to allow real time communication between users.
The service, marketed as PlayStation R∞m, will be made available via a forthcoming PSP firmware update, and will allow owners of Sony's handheld to create custom avatars, which they can use to host gatherings in rooms and visit other users' social hubs.
Launched from the handheld's XrossMediaBar, Room is to be made available to all Japanese PSP and PSPgo owners by the year's end, and is currently in being beta tested in the territory.
Room, which is a free service, will also enable the creation of blogs and albums.

The 250GB PS3 Slim is now 100% official. Stay tuned for U.S details, but overnight, Sony provided U.K and Australian pricing. In the U.K, bundles will be £285 (£35 extra), start rolling-out October 1st, and will include a Blu-ray pack:
- October 1: Either two Platinum titles or Infamous
- October 16: Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
- October 19: Blu-ray movie pack with Wolverine, The Dark Knight, and a Blu-ray remote.
In Australia, bundles on October 15 will include Uncharted 2, SingStar Mowtown, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time, and EyePet. All well and good, but Australians (including me) will be gouged A$600 (US$517) for the damn thing. Ouch.
We'll fill you in on the U.S. info as soon as we've got it.

Sony America has said that it will not be possible for people to exchange their UMDs for digital versions of the games they already own.
"We were evaluating a UMD conversion programme, but due to legal and technical reasons we will not be offering the programme at this time," a spokesman has told Kotaku, as reported by Eurogamer.
The idea would have been to hand in your UMD copy of, say, Lumines, and receive a digital copy of the same game in return.
In Europe, at least, Sony is offering people who upgrade to PSPgo the choice of three free digital downloads, providing they own at least one UMD game.
There are 17 titles to choose from, including Echochrome, LocoRoco, Patapon, Resistance: Retribution and WipEout Pure. The deal, which will run between October 1 and March 31 2010, was announced at TGS yesterday.

Another week , another PSP show arriving on schedule – this is what happens when there’s lots of content for the PSP platform. Anyway, as requested over the summer, it’s time for me to look at Dissidia now its had a European Release (on Sept 4th).
Before that the news, and a quick thumbs up for the ongoing TGS conference, some thoughts on the age of the typical PSP fan, and why Sony’s PSN downloads will be more expensive than a physical UMD of the same game.

Sony has announced a new PSP service for designing 3D avatars and "my room" spaces, along with blog, album, and group gathering and chat support. Um ... does this sound familiar to anyone?
Yes, it looks like PlayStation Home is coming to PSP ... sort of. PlayStation Room (officially spelled with an infinity symbol in place of the "oo" in Room) will be added to PSP in an upcoming firmware update this winter and can be launched directly from the PlayStation Network section of the XMB. Just like in Home, PSP owners will be able to invite other PlayStation players into their rooms to "enjoy real time communication." Is that what the kids call it these days?
While anything remotely resembling PlayStation Home has us reeling with trepidation, we do think Room's stylized avatars look significantly less creepy than the Home avatars ripped from the uncanny valley. We're also hopeful that the advent of Room will mean the addition of much-needed features, like a friends list and proper messaging services. And just imagine the connectivity possibilities: PlayStation HomeRoom! ... Anybody?

Like the last PSP, the PSPgo needs accessories. And accessories it has, with the full range of PSPgo peripherals, cases and add-ons on show at the Tokyo Game Show.
There's a Bluetooth stereo headset adapter, a converter cable...thing (so you can use older PSP accessories on the PSPgo), a cradle, AV cables and in-ear headset.
If earlier in the day you were DYING to find out what was in the box, well, this is it. Hope you didn't get your hopes up too high.

Here's a great scenario for you, if you happen to be Sony's wallet: charge $250 for a handheld console without a physical game media option, and then charge on average $5 more for downloaded titles than they go for at retail, since you have zero competition in the download space. That seems to be SCEA's definition of "price parity" right now for the PSP, though in Japan downloadable titles have been on average slightly cheaper than their physical counterparts. Sure, it's rough on retailers if they have to compete with a lower-than-MSRP price coming straight Sony, but the likes of Amazon are already at below MSRP on plenty of titles, and we're not so sure consumers are going to take kindly to paying more for less (in the physical sense, anyway) after they already splurged hard on the PSP Go... not that they'll have much choice in the matter, outside of trying their luck at the old swap-a-roo.

While Sony seemed more than willing to show off its new PSP Go Converter and even more willing to gloat about its one millionth PS3 Slim sale, this little tidbit was pushed away in some neglected corner of the Tokyo Game Show. Thankfully for you, we're dedicated to leaving no stone unturned, and now we've discovered that the outfit is fixing to cut 15 percent from the PSP-3000's price tag... but only in Japan. Starting on October 1st, the UMD-friendly handheld will be offered in The Land of the Rising Sun for ¥16,800, or just over $185 using current conversion tables. So Sony -- any plans to hook the rest of the world up? You don't want to see us pout.

September 24th, 2009, 19:19 Posted By: wraggster
Sony has unveiled a new online community service for PSP called Room, which will be free and available to all Japanese PSP and PSPgo owners before the end of the year.
Like PlayStation Home, Room allows 3D avatars to be created and room spaces decorated. Friends can then pop over to see what you've done, relaying their thoughts in real-time. "It's rubbish, start again."
Blogs can also be posted, albums compiled and groups of people ushered into circles to share topics in and chat.
Sony Japan will send closed beta invites out to select people over the coming months.
Sony Europe, on the other hand, had no further information to share.

Sony has announced a Converter Cable Adaptor for PSPgo that allows existing PSP peripherals, like the 1Seg Tuner and GPS Receiver, to be used.
Despite the Cable title, however, this piece of kit has a plastic frame that clips around the PSPgo and turns the shape from compact to clunky. The pictures mention that the design is a prototype, and subject to change. Quick, complain.
There's no word on price nor date yet, but we expect those to be clarified soon.

Sony is to launch a series of PlayStation 3 bundles which will consist of a 250GB hard drive console and selection of hardware and content.
The first of the line up will be made available on October 1 - also the date of the PSPgo launch - when a choice of soft bundles containing the console and either two Platinum titles or inFamous will be made available.
Following this, the range will be expanded to include an Uncharted 2 bundle on October 16.
Finally, October 19 will see the launch of a Blu-Ray movie pack containing Wolverine, Batman: The Dark Knight and a Blu-ray remote. The bundles, Sony today confirmed, will retail in the UK at GBP 284.99.
"Following the great success of the new, smaller, 120GB PS3, which sold over one million units in its first three weeks on sale, the 250GB model has the same hardware specifications as the current model, but with greater storage space, to offer consumers even more choice," commented Sony.

As well as promising Resident Evil 5: Director's Cut and LittleBigPlanet support for the PlayStation 3's wand motion controller, Sony has today revealed a list of launch games being developed internally to make use of it.
They are: Ape Escape, Echochrome 2, Eccentric Slider, Sling and Draw, Champions of Time, Motion Party, The Shoot, Tower, PAIN, Flower, Hustle Kings, High Velocity Bowling and EyePet.
Some of these games, Eurogamer reports, are on the market already, suggesting patches could be made available via PSN, and some of the others could be extensions of technical demos showcased at E3.
Sony's motion controller is due out in spring 2010 and features two motion sensors, a three-axes gyroscope, three-axes accelerometer, a rechargeable battery and Bluetooth connection to the PlayStation 3.
Earlier today at the Tokyo Game Show, Sony revealed it has sold over one million PlayStation 3 units in the three weeks since the launch of the new slim hardware.

Sony's US chief executive Jack Tretton has said that with sales of the PlayStation 3 soaring, it's possible the console may suffer shortages at retail.
The company announced today that the console has sold a further one million units globally since the slim model was introduced just over three week's ago.
"If things continue at this pace, it is conceivable that there will be product shortages," Tretton told Reuters.
"In a very difficult economy, I couldn't be more optimistic about our fortunes for the rest of the year and for the future," he added.
In the US, sales are up around 300 per cent since Sony dropped the price of the console to USD 299, said Tretton.

September 24th, 2009, 19:08 Posted By: wraggster
During a keynote speech at the Tokyo Game Show today, Sony president Kaz Hirai said videogames are still unable to capture the emotional responses of users.
Hirai said the forthcoming motion controller from Sony will help stimulate emotions and the company intends to use this to evolve the videogame business further.
"I've always felt that when you're enjoying games, there may be a build up of excitement or sadness or joy... But it's not possible to reflect your emotions into the game... I think we haven't really realised the potential yet," said Hirai. "The basic idea is to express emotion."
"Emotional input is still not fully developed," he added. "I think the games industry can still develop even more. One of its unique characteristics is that as technology develops, the way you express things, the number of colours on the palette increases as technology develops."
Hirai also said that the controller will be able to enhance all games, from casual to hardcore.
"This will be something that will be familiar to operate, and even for core gamers who have stringent requirements, it will be beneficial," he offered.
Despite showing prototypes for PS3 motion control, no further details were forthcoming, with Hirai reiterating the previous "spring" launch for the new technology.
Hirai also talked up the network-centric and online PlayStation business, revealing that accumulated sales on the PlayStation Network as of June 2009 exceeded 25 billion Yen.

In the three weeks since launching the new slim model PlayStation 3, Sony has sold over one million units.
That's according to numbers from Sony Japan, following the introduction of a new model and a lower asking price in all major regions.
"The new PS3 has been doing very well, and one of the reasons for this is the price," said SCE president Kaz Hirai at the Tokyo Game Show today. "As a system in the living room, we have managed to realise this price without making any changes to what is good about it."
The 120GB model now retails for USD 299 in the US, EUR 299 across Europe, GBP 249 in the UK and 29,980 in Japan.
