It never ends, does it? For quite some time now, Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City has been rumored to be gracing the PlayStation 3 at one point or another. The package, which includes The Lost and Damned and The Ballad of Gay Tony, is currently exclusive to Xbox 360.
Retail website simplygames.com has listed Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City for PS3. The listing even contains the newly designed PS3 boxart, lending the listing some credibility.

News via http://streetskaterfu.blogspot.com/2...ch-take-1.html
I just started to take a look at Folding@Home / Life with Playstation. There are several little details which are pretty interesting.
One thing which got me interested, is that the "game" has more permissions than any other game or application. Normal games do not have access to the root of /dev_hdd0/ but F@H has.
It can read, write and execute which was found out as it creates a folder called /cntlnk/ in /dev_hdd0/. There it caches several music files you play while running the application. This is handled via a SQL Lite Format 3 DB (db1.1.sqlite) in /NPIA00002/USRDIR/data/wlop/.
Another thing is, that F@H/LWP can override the PARAM.SFO. Normally the option window when u press triangle in XMB on a game just reads the data, PARAM.SFO passes to it. But here, the automatic start option is not loaded via the .sfo. It seems it comes from an external XML file in the game directory.
The last I want to write about now is, that older F@H versions were able to control the SPU's partly. For example it was possible to define how many SPU's are used at all.
These are just some points that came up so far. I will keep you updated when there is more!

News via http://streetskaterfu.blogspot.com/2...continues.html
So the PS3 is hacked ? Well that's nothing more than an urban legend.
Altough it's nice to capture all these HV calls and stuff from a plain (not encrypted) lv1 binary, but this will never lead to a hacked PS3.
Let's have a look.
The major security architecture on the PS3 is called the "Secure Processing Vault" and is the most important thing regarding "hacking" the PS3.
There is NO WAY for the PPU or even the HV to gain access to the SPU, which is an application running inside of an isolated SPU.
Well you can kick out the isolated SPU, like geohot mentioned, but this gives you nothing, as ALL the encryption and execution of applications (HDD encryption, app encryption, decryption, executing, signature checking, root key extraction) happens inside the isolated SPU.
To run homebrew on the PS3 you would have to reassemble the whole functionality from the SPU inside a binary running on the PPU.
For this you will need the root key. The root key is stored in hardware (not even close to the things on the iPhone). The root key cannot be extracted by any software or hardware means and is essential to ALL encryption/decryption, executing and checking routines.
The only way to get the root key is inside of an isolated SPU, as it is kick-starting the hardware encryption facility. There is no other way to do that !
Let's just assume that geohot or some other guys are able to break into the local store of the isolated SPE. There they will just find some encrypted binaries.
The key for decryption is encrypted by the root key !
You won't get anywhere without the root key.
Let's assume that someone managed to do all those stuff from the isolated SPU on the PPU and creates a CFW.
There is still a secure booting environment. The first module loaded/bootet is integrity checked by the hardware crypto facility utilizing the root key. So you have also to address this booting stuff. Again, no root key, no booting.
So there's always runtime patching you might ask ? Not possible on the PS3 because the hardware crypto facility is able to check the signatures whenever it wants to. And which part is responsible for this ? Exactly, the isolated SPU.
So if you kick out the isolated SPU the system will not boot/run anymore.
The PS3 is neither an PSP nor an iPhone. It's the most secure system architecture of this time !
The girl behind this stuff, Kanna Shimizu, is not somebody. Messing around with this is not like saying Bruce Schneier is a n00b.
Btw.: forget about all those stories, that certain hackers are or will be employed by SONY. That's nothing more than another urban legend.
@geohot It is OBVIOUS that the HV is PPC. The Cell BE is a PPC architecture, you know ;-) Better read those IBM papers in first place !

God of War II was almost a PS3 game (at least, before it did become a PS3 game). In an interview with Game Informer, Sony Worldwide Studios boss Shuhei Yoshida remembered the internal debate over whether to release God of War II as one of the last big games for PS2 or as a headline title for the PS3 launch. "Many people, including marketing, suggested that maybe it should be moved to PS3," Yoshida recalled. Certainly, God of War II would've bolstered an exclusive launch lineup that was limited to Resistance: Fall of Man and very little else.
"We had a lot of debates about it, actually. I always firmly stood by keeping it on PS2," Yoshida continued, noting that "the end of a platform is when you see really great games, after developers really begin to understand the hardware."
Yoshida's "gamble" paid off, both critically and financially. If God of War II had been a PS3 launch title, more systems would probably have been pushed at launch, but software sales would've undoubtedly suffered compared to the game's success as a PS2 title. Besides, PS3 owners weren't excluded from the action! Back then, PS3s used to have this magical "backwards compatibility" thingy.

Here's some encouraging news for those hoping that the PlayStation Motion Controller (pleaseannouncethenamealready!) will give a reason to knock the dust off your old PlayStation Eye. According to a Nikkei report spotted by Andriasang, the device, which pairs with the Eye, will have "around 10 or so games" by year's end, including sports and pet raising titles.
We've been disappointed by the game support for the Eye so far, outside of the ability to construct extensive scrotum-centric LBP sticker libraries. Here's hoping that these promised releases can take all the Eyes sitting on our shelves from novelty to necessity.

davidgf has released a new game for the PSP in our PSP Emulation and Homebrew Forum, heres what he says:
Hello everyone!
I'm developing a new homebrew game which is title provisionally Toy Wars.
I'm posting here a bit "demo" which doesn't have any mission or something.
I'd be nice if you own a PSP if you tried the demo and post a report here with your impression, the average framerate and bugs or errors.
People with old fat PSP should have problems because PSP fat have been reported errors in the hardware VPFU registers, but I don't know for sure.
Anyway thanks everyone for reading!

The Japanese PS3 version of Bayonetta will receive a patch tomorrow enabling hard-drive installs. You'll be able to do the honours through the in-game menu.
SEGA hopes this will shorten the long loading times that PS3 fans have been complaining about.
We're investigating the whereabouts of a European patch.
For Xbox 360 owners, Bayonetta can already be installed to hard-drive using the system's Dashboard options.

We covered the release of the PS3 Exploit release last night for the PS3 and the Gamesindustry site has posted an article about it:
PlayStation 3 hacker George Hotz has released his exploit for the console, inviting others to expand on and develop his work.
"Hopefully this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organise and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released," wrote Hotz on his blog. "I have a life to get back to and can't keep working on this all day and night."
According to Digital Foundry's Richard Leadbetter, writing for Eurogamer.net, "the released hack contains details of the interface Hotz created and sample code for adding complete read/write access to the PS3 via OtherOS/Linux. It also explains how the hardware is used in opening up the system, with Hotz glitching the memory bus to effectively turn a small hole in RAM into one that encompasses the entire system."
Hotz confirmed over the weekend that he had hacked the console, saying that he did it out of curiosity and did not intend to get involved in any games piracy.
"I'm not going to personally have anything to do with that," said Hotz. "To tell you the truth, I've never really played a PS3. I have one game, but I've never really played it."
Although Hotz claims the PS3 has now been hacked, the internal decryption algorithms of the CELL processor are impenetrable and no homebrew code has yet been seen running on the console.
"Hacking is breaking the security of the system, which I have done," said Hotz. "I'm not spending my time writing custom firmware, ISO loaders, and an open SDK. Leave that to somebody else...
"I didn't give up, I'm just not spending all day on it any more. I have other things to do. Just because I don't do something doesn't mean I can't do it. Unlike the iPhone, there isn't a clear definition of hacked (as in unlocked or jailbroken). This is code execution at the highest privilege level."

More News from Geohot and the release of the PS3 Exploit:
In the interest of openness, I've decided to release the exploit. Hopefully, this will ignite the PS3 scene, and you will organize and figure out how to use this to do practical things, like the iPhone when jailbreaks were first released. I have a life to get back to and can't keep working on this all day and night.
Please document your findings on the psDevWiki. They have been a great resource so far, and with the power this exploit gives, opens tons of new stuff to document. I'd like to see the missing HV calls filled in, nice memory maps, the boot chain better documented, and progress on a 3D GPU driver. And of course, the search for a software exploit.
This is the coveted PS3 exploit, gives full memory access and therefore ring 0 access from OtherOS. Enjoy your hypervisor dumps. This is known to work with version 2.4.2 only, but I imagine it works on all current versions.

News from Geohot himself:
First off, this is not a release blog like "On The iPhone". If you are expecting some tool to be released from this blog like blackra1n, stop reading now. If you have a slim and are complaining this hack won't work for you, stop reading now. WE DO NOT CONDONE PIRACY, NOR WILL WE EVER. If you are looking for piracy, stop reading now. If you want to see the direction in which I will take this blog, read the early entries in the iPhone one. Information on this blog is for research purposes only.
That aside, I'll tell you what I have so far. I have added two hypercalls, lv1_peek and lv1_poke. peek reads memory in real space(including all the MMIO), poke writes it. I can also add other arbitrary hypercalls as I see fit.
The hypervisor is complicated, it is written in C++ and is PPC, which I am not that familiar with yet. At first I was trying to add a hypercall to add arbitrary real memory to the LPAR, but it kept crashing(because I can't code), which is really annoying, because I have to wait while Linux reboots.
Some people pointed out that I have not accessed the isolated SPEs. This is true. Although as far as doing anything with the system, it doesn't matter. The PPE can't read the isolated data, but it can kick the isolated SPEs out. Decrypt the PPE binary you need using the intact SPE and save the decrypted version. Kick out the SPE, and patch the decrypted version all you want. And interesting note, by the time you get to OtherOS, all 7 working SPEs are stopped.
Despite this, I am working on the isolated SPEs now(which I can now load), because what I'd really like to do is post decryption keys here so you guys can join the fun.

"Who said we are lost again in this lonely world?" That's the first line of the somewhat hokey but infectious theme song to Phantasy Star Universe. When the song was written, that was a rhetorical question, but now it's been answered: Sega says you're lost in this lonely world. At least, that's the message the publisher is sending the remaining players of the PS2 and PC versions, whose servers will be shut down soon.
Following the January 29 "Maximum Attack G+" event, Sega will convert everyone's account to a free account, and allow the players to enjoy what time they can before the servers shut off on March 31. This won't affect the Xbox 360 version in any way other than the flood of refugees from other platforms.
It may not be much of a flood, however: GM Edward@Sega said that the shutdown is taking place because "[t]he population is simply too low for us to be able to continue to support this platform."

More on the PS3 Hacking Story, this time from the UKs Games Industry site:
Notorious iPhone hacker George Hotz has apparently cracked Sony's PlayStation 3, opening the console up to pirate and homebrew software.
Hotz, who spent five weeks working on the hack, told BBC News that he did it out of curiosity, and is likely to post details online as soon as he's completely finished his work.
"It's supposed to be unhackable - but nothing is unhackable," said Hotz. "I can now do whatever I want with the system. It's like I've got an awesome new power - I'm just not sure how to wield it."
Hotz hasn't cracked the entire system, but claims to have accessed the root key, with a method using "5 per cent hardware and 95 per cent software". "You can use hardware to inject an insecurity and then you can build on that," he detailed.
"PS3 is the most secure games console ever released," said Richard Leadbetter, editor of Eurogamer's Digital Foundry blog. "The modchip makers have been puzzling over it for years, other hackers have tried their hands at reverse-engineering development hardware and all attempts to turn retail units into the debug ones (opening the door to piracy) have also failed.
"The security on the Blu-ray games has never been cracked either. All bets are off now if hackers have access to the system right from the moment it boots."
The hack could allow users to run alternative operating systems on the PlayStation 3, as well as play PlayStation 2 software and pirated games.
"I'm not going to personally have anything to do with that," said Hotz. "To tell you the truth, I've never really played a PS3. I have one game, but I've never really played it."
Sony said that it was "investigating the report and will clarify the situation once we have more information."
Hotz unlocked the iPhone when was he was 17, opening it up more than one network, and posted details online for others to take advantage of.

Sony says that it now plans to release the PS2 remake bundle as a standalone SKU
The God of War Collection will get a standalone release in the UK, SCEE has told VG247.
The SKU bundles high definition ports of PS2 classics God of War and God of War II, and had previously only been confirmed for the North American market.
Until now, those hoping to get their hands on the God of War Collection in the UK faced the prospect of forking out £110 for the upcoming God of War Ultimate Trilogy, which includes the remakes as well as the PS2 remakes.
However, a spokesperson stated: “There are plans to release the God Of War Collection separately but nothing has been confirmed outside of the Ultimate Edition for the time being.”
God of War III is likely to be released for PS3 on March 19th.
