Sony's CES booth was heavy on 3D content, the current fancy of consumer electronics makers, including a playable 3D version of Gran Turismo 5 for the PlayStation 3. Does the Real Driving Simulator become even real-er when played in 3D?
Well, it certainly ups the challenge, as adjusting to a 3D display while coming to grips with Gran Turismo 5's impressive driving physics doubles the learning curve. But it certainly looks 3D with the PS3 game's HUD popping against a cockpit that simulates a real feeling of depth, from the steering wheel and driver's hands displaying in the foreground, down to the 3D vents in the dashboard.
It was impressive. But it was also a little bit disorienting. That may be due to my penchant for oversteering the Mazda that was available to take for a spin. And I mean that literally, as the braking in GT5 and the force feedback from locking up the tires sometimes sent be spinning wildly out of control. Readjusting my eyes to the 3D display afterward took longer than my eyes were comfortable with.
The 3D effect was, for lack of a better word, tastefully done, offering a sense of depth to the road ahead without much in the way of technical gimmickry. But it did have a drawback, as objects far in the distance and shadows cast on the car's interior introduced a more noticeable moiré pattern effect when viewed in 3D.
As a tech demo, GT5 in 3D was interesting, even if the extra visual tricks didn't add much substance to the experience.
Sony plans to update the PlayStation 3's firmware at some point in 2010 to introduce 3D content—reps said "summer"—if you'd like to test out 3D gaming yourself. That is, if you've got the TV and glasses to go along with it...

Yesterday we spotted a PS3 gun controller at the CTA Gaming Accessories booth. We have covered home made solutions like this before, like the WeeP5 zapper, and it is great to see alternative controllers spreading to other consoles. Now all we need is some force feedback, and we’ll really be able to feel in the game. As always, Hi-Res is available.
[Caleb]-I think the home made ones had better button layouts. See the thumb stick on the back of the pistol grip? They did that so it will work for right and left handed people instead of making it on one side.

January 8th, 2010, 17:08 Posted By: wraggster
While 3D is all the rage at CES this year, we learned today from the BDA that one of the biggest sources of 3D content isn't what it could be. The first thing that could, should, be better is the limited support for frame rates. Movies have been recorded at 24 frames per second for longer than our parents have been alive, and for about the same amount of time we've had to endure frame rate interpolation to make movies play back on our 30Hz TVs -- you know, like 3:2 pull-down. That changed recently with 120hz LCDs and 72Hz plasmas because those numbers share a common denominator with 24 (so the same frame is just shown three or four times). Well so much for that because the frame rates of the new 3D displays don't share a common denominator any more (either 30 or 60 hz per eye). But honestly the worst part is that the new 3D cameras can capture 3D at higher frame rates. Now even if new movies were recorded at a higher frame rate, the new 3D Blu-ray spec doesn't support it. The other issue we take with the new spec is that contrary to early reports, it is possible to create a 3D Blu-ray Disc that won't play on 2D only players. Not as big of a deal, but still sad is that even if the creator goes through the trouble to encode the movie in both formats, depending on the 3D player, you may have no choice but to watch it in 3D -- say if you lost your glasses or whatever. Now don't get us wrong we're pretty excited about the new 3D technology, but the way we see it is that anything worth doing, is worth doing right the first time.

Square Enix's North American arm yesterday said it had slated Nier for a spring release. It's not confirmed if this also applies to Europe; we've contacted Square Enix to find out.
The action game developed by Cavia (creator of, among other things, Bullet Witch, Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles, KORG DS-10 and Lovely Complex: Punch de Conte) is for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, although there will be a second, PS3-exclusive version called Nier Replicant for Japan only.
Square Enix also seems keen to talk up the RPG features of what we previously thought was a straight hackandslash in the Devil May Cry mould.
"The Next RPG from Square Enix," trumpets the press release, which you can read at Team Xbox. "RPG Gameplay Injected With Action-Packed Combat," it continues. "Battle ferocious and mysterious enemies by combining proven RPG-style gameplay, such as magic, character development and faithful allies, with action-focused explosive swordplay and combat."

God Of War 3 publisher Sony believes God Of War 3 will be a 'must have' game for adult gamers when it arrives in March - as it is "set apart" from any other next-gen title on the market.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with CVG, Sony's product manager for the game Claire Backhouse said that title offered "unmistakable realism" - and was four times larger than its predecessor.
She said: "God of War 3 combines these new technologies with the much loved gameplay elements from the previous games - Puzzle solving, brutal combat and epic set-piece battles.
"It also benefits from a deep and involving storyline, steeped in Greek Mythology. This is what makes God of War 3 unique and sets it apart from other next gen titles."
She added: "I think if you are over 18 and want an amazing single player experience this year then God of War 3 is a must have."

It might not have even been officially announced yet, but that hasn't stopped OPM bringing word that Tecmo's latest fighter won't be exclusive to Xbox 360.
Recent DoA fighting - and volleyball - games have remained exclusive to Xbox 360 for the past few years, mainly under the watchful eye of Tomonobu Itagaki. But seeing as though Itagaki is no longer at the publisher and developer, that throws the franchise wide open to new directions.
One new direction is PlayStation 3, rumours OPM in its latest issue. "Tecmo's next big-bosomed fighter, Dead Or Alive 5, is in production for PS3," boldly claims the UK mag.
With all the noise surrounding recent Street Fighter and Tekken releases, it's not surprising to see Tecmo wanting a piece of the blackeye pie. The last DOA game was part of the Xbox 360 launch, it's due a comeback.

Hopefully, the third time is the charm for SOCOM Fireteam Bravo. After two delays, the Slant Six-developed co-op shooter is finally making its way to PSP on February 16 on both UMD and PlayStation Network.
As per usual, online multiplayer is central to the upcoming SOCOM sequel. Fireteam Bravo 3 will not only support sixteen player Infrastructure play, it also features four-player co-op -- a first for the franchise. Considering Slant Six's track record, it'll either play like the brilliant SOCOM Tactical Strike ... or like SOCOM Confrontation.

With a name like Hexyz Force, it can only be some sort of Japanese RPG being released for the North American PSP by Atlus, the company that brought us Yggdra Union.
Hexyz Force (pronounced "I have no idea, perhaps Hex-ees?), is a Japanese RPG being released for the PSP on May 25th by Atlus, so if your assumption matched mine, you score 2 points. Developed by Sting of Riviera, Yggdra Union, and Knights in the Nightmare. Hexyz Force is a traditional RPG featuring two different campaigns. Players can choose to play as the young cleric Cecilia or the elite knight Levant as they attempt to save their world from impending doom.
Judging from these screens the game looks gorgeous for a 3D PSP RPG, with more than 20 minutes of anime cutscenes for those of you who prefer a flatter sort of art. They also boast virtually no loading times in their official announcement, which would be lovely. We'll see how that works out when Hexyz Force hits retail and the PlayStation Store this spring.
For more information, visit http://www.atlus.com/hexyzforce.

Sony's given God of War III a concrete Japanese date of 25th March 2010.
Meanwhile, in Europe, Sony hasn't been more specific than "March", although this latest scrap suggests a 26th March date is likely.
The publisher told Eurogamer this afternoon that nothing has been confirmed and may not be for a few weeks.
Europe's also heard nothing more of the God of War Collection, the Blu-ray revival of PS2 games God of War I & II. This was released in the US last year, so importing is an option.
God of War III, alongside Heavy Rain and perhaps Gran Turismo 5, is another glitz-and-glamour first-party exclusive Sony has lined up for early 2010.
Head over to our gamepage below for the God of War III story so far.

Retailer HMV has clarified to Eurogamer that Heavy Rain's release date - listed on HMV.com as 26th February - is actually still unconfirmed.
This ties in with Sony's silence on the matter earlier in the day.
"The release date is still TBC as we understand it," an HMV spokesperson told us, "but in order to list items on [our website] and to make them available for pre-order - or to enable customers to register their interest so we can keep them updated - we have to put a release date on the system.
"We have therefore used the unconfirmed date as the best information available to us at the present time."
Nevertheless, HMV's unconfirmed date has been picked up by most other retailers, including Amazon, Play, ShopTo and GAME.
We wouldn't be surprised if they'd hit the nail on the head.

Mutant Storm creators PomPom Games are releasing a PSP Mini called Alien Zombie Death.
The 2D platform "survival shooter" will cost £2.50 "or something similar" and appear on the PSP Minis channel this month if "all goes well".
Players take control of a lone spaceman who must defend himself for as long as possible against waves of alien zombies on simple platform layouts.
"We originally wanted a single level you could play that got hard very quickly and that was that. Sell it cheap as nuts and hope people dig it," said artist Michael Michael in his PlayStation Blog post.
"But… 2 or 3 enemies became 9 or 10 and one level became 14 and before we knew it we had weapon power-ups, score multipliers, coin pickups, bonus UFOs, a menagerie of different beasties and lots of medals to collect."
Sounds good. We trust PomPom to do this sort of thing right.

Panasonic was showing off its new lineup of cameras and camcorders at its display table at Digital Experience, but that wasn't what really caught our eyes. Nope, that honor went to the DMP-B500, a portable Blu-ray player that had both a killer screen and a (fairly) slim profile. Better yet, it doubles as a standalone Blu-ray player when you connect it to your TV, and it links up nicely with other VIERA products. Also on display was a WiFi photo frame with a built in CD player and a hidden iPod dock. Calendar and photo widgets looked nice on the crisp display, and let's just put it this way, we don't know how much we'd mind waking up to that in the morning. You don't have to take our word for it though, check our the goods in our hands-on gallery.

In what is sure to be just the beginning of announcements from studios getting behind 3D Blu-ray, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment has announced that when Sony Bravia 3D HDTVs and Blu-ray Players hit the street this Summer that at least one movie from said studio will be available in the new format. Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs is the first 3D title on the list, but details and other titles are promised this Spring.

Sony head Kaz Hirai has unveiled his company's plans to expand the PlayStation Network across a range of Sony products and announced the creation of a new studio dedicated to producing content especially for the expanding service.
Speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show, Hirai said the PlayStation Network experience would be unified across Sony's product range of Blu-ray players, televisions and PCs.
According to Hirai, users will eventually have a "single user login and experience across all product lines," reports Kotaku.
The expansion will be kicked off from next month when PSN's video service will arrive on networked Bravia televisions and Blu-ray devices as well as any Windows-based PC.
In addition, a newly created studio would produce content especially for distribution over the network, confirmed Hirai. The studio, which will be headed up by the exec, will be called Sony Network Entertainment.
Talk of the expanded PSN service began early last year when Sony said it was in the process of deciding a roll-out plan onto other devices.
"TV is where we have to win," Sony's entertainment business Robert Wiesenthal said back in June. "We can no longer afford to only offer great TVs. Otherwise, we set the stage for someone to become the Google of the TV."

Sony Computer Entertainment has estimated it sold over 3.8 million PlayStation units during the five weeks of the Christmas period 2009.
That's a 76 per cent increase in hardware sales over last year, and the highest record sales for the PS3 during a Christmas period, according to Sony.
As of January 3 2010, the PlayStation Network has over 38 million accounts via the PS3, PC and PSP. The company also confirmed that 3D stereoscopic gaming would be introduced to the PlayStation 3 system this year through a firmware upgrade.
2010 will also see the release of the company's Motion Controller (not the final name, according to Sony), but the company did not go as far as Microsoft by announcing a launch window for the system.
