Finnish developer Pixolane expects to make its PS3 debut later this year with its first game, Rust Buccaneers. The PlayStation Network title is an arcade-style shooter featuring modern-day pirates. Just like pirates have done throughout history, though, players will raid cargo and passenger ships, and battle do-gooder patrol boats. The more ships you conquer, the higher your "infamy" becomes, and online leaderboards will keep track of the most notorious pirates on the high servers.
Rust Buccaneers promises both single and multiplayer modes. Not much else is known about the game at the moment, but we'll let you know when more details sail across our pirate radar.

Sony has said that you can now download a new pack of motors for the love-it-or-hate-it PSP version of Gran Turismo for free.
"From today on PlayStation Store you can download an exciting pack of motors completely free of charge," Sony said via its blog.
There's no word why it's free but Sony did say it's "Just what's needed to boost the garage you've been working hard on building up since GT-PSP hit the shelves last October." Do you agree or would you rather a better career mode was beamed into the handheld version?

Namco Bandai has slapped a 16th April release date on its PS3 and 360 action game, Dead to Rights: Retribution.
That's for Europe. In the US, it'll be available from the preceding Tuesday (13th April) as per usual.
Dead to Rights: Retribution is a revival of the not-that-fondly-remembered series of gritty third-person shooters starring a gruff police officer and his crimefighting dog, Shadow.
North American players get a choice of in-game pre-order bonuses depending on their preferred retailer, including one that features MadWorld-style "noir mode" graphics and dog camouflage, which sounds pretty sweet actually. Here's hoping there'll be something similar in Europe.

Sony may be trying to force the 3D agenda with first-party PS3 titles and 3DTVs, but EA Sports president Peter Moore will not be following suit in 2010, his studio focusing instead on the new wave of motion-control devices.
Speaking exclusively to GamesIndustry.biz, Moore admitted he was keeping "a very close eye" on "the opportunities for sports" in 3D, but insisted the press and public would see "nothing at all" from the studio this year.
"No, no, no. I have a point of view and that's about as much as we have," said Moore, speaking in London yesterday at a FIFA event. "You've rightly pointed out that, from Howard Stringer down, Sony has made it a strategic imperative for the company. And when Sony does something of that nature then we as a company need to sit up and take notice.
"But believe me there's nothing going on right now that would say I'm ready to demo a 3D sports game. Nothing at all."
However, with motion-control coming to PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 later this year, Moore revealed EA Sports would be throwing its weight behind both platforms.
He said: "We're getting in sync with Sony's motion controller and Project Natal with what Sony and Microsoft want to do with their publishing partners, so stay tuned for further information on that as we get closer to the date. And as you can imagine, EA being EA we're going to have our core intellectual property represented in some shape of fashion on those platforms.
Yet despite both the PlayStation controller – rumoured to be called Arc – and Project Natal both set to launch later this year, Moore refused to confirm EA Sports would support either launch window.
"Don't know. I do not know when they're launching. Certainly Sony has made no public pronouncement at all, and Microsoft has said 'holiday', which obviously gives fudge room, so stay tuned."
When it was pointed out that Sony had publicly committed to a 2010 release, Moore added: "Well, that helps! I know what their public pronouncements are and I know what we're working towards. We're also going to get in sync with their announcement strategy. If they hit this year then you'll hear something from us about what our plans are."
At yesterday's event, held at Stamford Bridge stadium, home to Chelsea FC, Moore also unveiled FIFA Online, a free-to-play PC title due to go into public beta this summer.
"We need to grow our business in a world where the core boxed goods business is not growing to the level all of us would want," he said. "But what is growing is the world of digital and if there are problems that we're solving with FIFA Online, it's accessibility, it's price, it's time consumption."

As soon as I saw Samsung's BD-C6900 3D Blu-Ray player, I desperately wanted to preorder one—awkward product name aside. $400 just seems like a small price to pay for 3D-induced headaches in my very own living room.
There are plenty of other Samsung products popping up for preorder on Amazon today, such as the BD-C6500 with a price $300 and a boot-time of only 15 seconds—though that player is limited to two dimensions. Like my TV.

PlatinumGames, developer of Bayonetta and MadWorld, has revealed its next game - Vanquish.
Resident Evil creator Shinji Maki is at the helm. Details such as platforms, dates and even basic gameplay mechanics are scarce.
A trailer video shows a man being decked out in technologically advanced armour and tackling an "enemy" that has destroyed - using an Independence Day-style laser - what appears to be New York City.
Whether this enemy is alien or human we do not know, but they have a strong presence in space and some fancy technology. Interestingly, the high-tech man appears to be watching the footage from a different country - a European country, it looks like.
Eventually he finds himself on-board an enemy vessel, taking on giant walking gunships with what looks like an assault rifle.

News via http://rdist.root.org/2010/01/27/how...or-was-hacked/
George Hotz, previously known as an iPhone hacker, announced that he hacked the Playstation 3 and then provided exploit details. Various articles have been written about this but none of them appear to have analyzed the actual code. Because of the various conflicting reports, here is some more analysis to help understand the exploit.
The PS3, like the Xbox360, depends on a hypervisor for security enforcement. Unlike the 360, the PS3 allows users to run ordinary Linux if they wish, but it still runs under management by the hypervisor. The hypervisor does not allow the Linux kernel to access various devices, such as the GPU. If a way was found to compromise the hypervisor, direct access to the hardware is possible, and other less privileged code could be monitored and controlled by the attacker.
Hacking the hypervisor is not the only step required to run pirated games. Each game has an encryption key stored in an area of the disc called ROM Mark. The drive firmware reads this key and supplies it to the hypervisor to use to decrypt the game during loading. The hypervisor would need to be subverted to reveal this key for each game. Another approach would be to compromise the Blu-ray drive firmware or skip extracting the keys and just slave the decryption code in order to decrypt each game. After this, any software protection measures in the game would need to be disabled. It is unknown what self-protection measures might be lurking beneath the encryption of a given game. Some authors might trust in the encryption alone, others might implement something like SecuROM.
The hypervisor code runs on both the main CPU (PPE) and one of its seven Cell coprocessors (SPE). The SPE thread seems to be launched in isolation mode, where access to its private code and data memory is blocked, even from the hypervisor. The root hardware keys used to decrypt the bootloader and then hypervisor are present only in the hardware, possibly through the use of eFUSEs. This could also mean that each Cell processor has some unique keys, and decryption does not depend on a single global root key (unlike some articles that claim there is a single, global root key).
George’s hack compromises the hypervisor after booting Linux via the “OtherOS” feature. He has used the exploit to add arbitrary read/write RAM access functions and dump the hypervisor. Access to lv1 is a necessary first step in order to mount other attacks against the drive firmware or games.
His approach is clever and is known as a “glitching attack“. This kind of hardware attack involves sending a carefully-timed voltage pulse in order to cause the hardware to misbehave in some useful way. It has long been used by smart card hackers to unlock cards. Typically, hackers would time the pulse to target a loop termination condition, causing a loop to continue forever and dump contents of the secret ROM to an accessible bus. The clock line is often glitched but some data lines are also a useful target. The pulse timing does not always have to be precise since hardware is designed to tolerate some out-of-spec conditions and the attack can usually be repeated many times until it succeeds.
George connected an FPGA to a single line on his PS3’s memory bus. He programmed the chip with very simple logic: send a 40 ns pulse via the output pin when triggered by a pushbutton. This can be done with a few lines of Verilog. While the length of the pulse is relatively short (but still about 100 memory clock cycles of the PS3), the triggering is extremely imprecise. However, he used software to setup the RAM to give a higher likelihood of success than it would first appear.
His goal was to compromise the hashed page table (HTAB) in order to get read/write access to the main segment, which maps all memory including the hypervisor. The exploit is a Linux kernel module that calls various system calls in the hypervisor dealing with memory management. It allocates, deallocates, and then tries to use the deallocated memory as the HTAB for a virtual segment. If the glitch successfully desynchronizes the hypervisor from the actual state of the RAM, it will allow the attacker to overwrite the active HTAB and thus control access to any memory region. Let’s break this down some more.
The first step is to allocate a buffer. The exploit then requests that the hypervisor create lots of duplicate HTAB mappings pointing to this buffer. Any one of these mappings can be used to read or write to the buffer, which is fine since the kernel owns it. In Unix terms, think of these as multiple file handles to a single temporary file. Any file handle can be closed, but as long as one open file handle remains, the file’s data can still be accessed.
The next step is to deallocate the buffer without first releasing all the mappings to it. This is ok since the hypervisor will go through and destroy each mapping before it returns. Immediately after calling lv1_release_memory(), the exploit prints a message for the user to press the glitching trigger button. Because there are so many HTAB mappings to this buffer, the user has a decent chance of triggering the glitch while the hypervisor is deallocating a mapping. The glitch probably prevents one or more of the hypervisor’s write cycles from hitting memory. These writes were intended to deallocate each mapping, but if they fail, the mapping remains intact.
At this point, the hypervisor has an HTAB with one or more read/write mappings pointing to a buffer it has deallocated. Thus, the kernel no longer owns that buffer and supposedly cannot write to it. However, the kernel still has one or more valid mappings pointing to the buffer and can actually modify its contents. But this is not yet useful since it’s just empty memory.
The exploit then creates a virtual segment and checks to see if the associated HTAB is located in a region spanning the freed buffer’s address. If not, it keeps creating virtual segments until one does. Now, the user has the ability to write directly to this HTAB instead of the hypervisor having exclusive control of it. The exploit writes some HTAB entries that will give it full access to the main segment, which maps all of memory. Once the hypervisor switches to this virtual segment, the attacker now controls all of memory and thus the hypervisor itself. The exploit installs two syscalls that give direct read/write access to any memory address, then returns back to the kernel.
It is quite possible someone will package this attack into a modchip since the glitch, while somewhat narrow, does not need to be very precisely timed. With a microcontroller and a little analog circuitry for the pulse, this could be quite reliable. However, it is more likely that a software bug will be found after reverse-engineering the dumped hypervisor and that is what will be deployed for use by the masses.
Sony appears to have done a great job with the security of the PS3. It all hangs together well, with no obvious weak points. However, the low level access given to guest OS kernels means that any bug in the hypervisor is likely to be accessible to attacker code due to the broad API it offers. One simple fix would be to read back the state of each mapping after changing it. If the write failed for some reason, the hypervisor would see this and halt.
It will be interesting to see how Sony responds with future updates to prevent this kind of attack.

SEGA has finally confirmed that it will release AfterBurner Climax on PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade this spring.
AfterBurner Climax revived SEGA's eighties jet-fighting classic for the arcade in 2006, in much the same way as OutRun 2 had done for the evergreen racer. Unlike that game, however, Climax has not yet made its way into the home.
However, an XBLA and PSN conversion was suggested by both common sense and an Australian Ratings Board classification last year. The game was recently confirmed for release in Japan, and an ESRB rating earlier today promted SEGA's US and European arms into confirming the news.

Final Fantasy XIII producer Yoshinori Kitase has confirmed downloadable content for the game.
He gave no details on what or when, but told OPM Benelux (via VG247) that "we did prepare a DLC but it will arrive a little later in the West".
Strangely, Kitase was - just a day earlier - reported to have said DLC wasn't being considered for FFXIII at present.
Thankfully, that no longer appears to be the case.
Earlier this month, art director Isamu Kamikokuryou revealed that there had been enough content cut from Final Fantasy XIII to make an entirely new game. An area around hero Lightning's home as well as a secret base for resistence group Nora and a Nautilus Park fairground had been axed to keep the game's size down, we learned.
Whether Square Enix intends some of that content to be reinstated we do not know.
Final Fantasy XIII will be released on 9th March for PS3 and Xbox 360.

With 2010 looking to be a big year in the quest to drive 3D TV sets into consumer’s houses, EA Sports boss Peter Moore has predicted that the sports sector will be the key driving force behind the uptake of the technology in the game sector.
“As James Cameron did with Avatar at the movies, you've got to build games from the ground up with 3D in mind,” the exec told CVG.
“None of the games I've seen so far have been built that way – they've been regular games running in 3D. The real secret sauce will be when somebody says 'I'm going to build this game specifically for a 3D platform’.”
When pressed on whether EA will be pursuing such a strategy, Moore replied:
“I think there's great opportunity for EA to bring sports to life in unbelievably imaginative ways, once we can grasp what 3D means to us.
“This is reminiscent of where we were with HD five or six years ago. It seems like a lifetime ago now, but you'd go to CES and be in awe of HD – and it was sports games that showed up the technology.”

Sony has declined to comment on today's reports stating that the company is set to announce a ¥100 billion ($1.1 billion / £690 million) operating profit for the October-December quarter - the first increase in Q3 profit for the company in five years.
According to Nikkei (reported by Reuters), the Sony Computer Entertainment division will also post its first profit in four quarters for the period - a result that would largely be down to buoyant sales of the PlayStation 3 since its price drop, and a decrease in the hardware's manufacturing costs.
However Sony released a statement earlier today in specific regard to the story, stating that it has made no official announcement on its quarterly results.
"Certain media reported today on matters relating to Sony Corporation's upcoming consolidated financial results for the third quarter ended December 31, 2009 and the outlook for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2010," it read.
"Sony has made no announcement in this regard and has no comment. Sony plans to release its consolidated financial results for the third quarter on February 4, 2010."
Nikkei's predictions were even higher than the general market consensus on Sony's results, which estimate profit of ¥74.2 billion.
The Japanese newspaper also cited strong sales of LCD TVs, payroll cuts and consolidation of facilities as helping the business return to the break-even level on an operating basis.

Alien Vs Predator senior producer Dave Brickley has told CVG he's keen on the idea of adding motion control support to the gory shooter when Sony and Microsoft's Natal and Sony's PS3 'wand' (aka Arc) arrive later this year.
When asked if AvP might be updated to support motion control similarly to the motion-enabled updates of LittleBigPlanet and Resident Evil 5 on PS3, Brickley replied: "Yeah, it certainly could."
He went on to say he was "excited" by the new tech. "Like any gamer I'm excited about the prospect of adding a new dimension to the medium. The Wii showed it can add something totally different that's not just tacked on," he said.
"What do you think, would people like to actually rip out someone's spine with their bare hands?" asked Brickley.
Check back in the next few days to catch the full interview with Dave Brickley discussing why AvP isn't a "me too" shooter", and the "fundamental issue" with motion control.

Sony will release "around 10 or so" games for its impending motion control device this year, according to reports.
And among the titles that will be released for the motion controller - rumoured to be named Arc - are sports and pet raising games, said a Nikkei report (translated by Andriasang).
Last week, an "extensive line-up" of software was promised by the company, along with a worldwide release of the motion controller in North America, Europe, Japan and the Asian regions.
It also announced that the device's release date had been shifted from spring 2010 to fall - which puts its launch much closer to that of Microsoft's Natal peripheral, due this 'holiday'.

Capcom Europe has today revealed the final box art design for the forthcoming Super Street Fighter IV. Set for release across Europe on both Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on April 30th 2010, as revealed earlier this week, Super Street Fighter IV will improve on it’s predecessor by offering additional characters, backgrounds, gameplay modes and those sorely missed bonus rounds from Street Fighter II.
Street Fighter IV launched in February 2009 to critical acclaim. Electronic Theatre delivered an in-depth review shortly after launch, stating that; “Street Fighter IV is a fantastic rendition of a one much-loved series, and will undoubtedly be a success at retail.” Which, it seems, it most certainly was.
Super Street Fighter IV sees the addition of new characters Cody and Guy from the Final Fight series, and the all-new Juri, as well as the Electronic Theatre Imagereturn of a number of old favourites. Super Street Fighter II’s Deejay and T. Hawk join the line-up, as well as Adon from the very first Street Fighter title, later featured in the Street Fighter Alpha series. In addition to these new characters, a handful of new backgrounds (featured in new screenshots here) and a number of new gameplay modes will be included in the title also, all of which are demonstrated in a trailer, available right here.
Super Street Fighter IV will be available across Europe this coming April, and Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest details on this and other forthcoming titles from Capcom.
