geohot (aka George Hotz) has been busy setting up a custom SPI interface for the PS3 Cell processor in order to basically remap a region of the hypervisor protected memory to overlap SPU memory in userland using his FPGA setup. You can find more information in his ps3 blog and updates via twitter. I suspect the goal of the hack is to execute his own code in protected memory without interference from the hypervisor.

So you've learned what dominated December's PSN sales. But what about the other eleven months of the year? Sony has released a list of the top 10 premium downloads from the PlayStation Store for 2009.
1) Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 1
2) Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 2
3) Call of Duty: World at War Map Pack 3
4) FIFA 09 Gold Pack
5) Final Fantasy VII (PS3/PSP)
6) Battlefield 1943
7) Fat Princess
8) MARVEL VS CAPCOM 2
9) Flower
10) Mortal Kombat II
Looks like people answered the Call of Duty ... by opening up their wallets. Undoubtedly, Modern Warfare 2 DLC is likely to top 2010's sales figures. Finally, Battlefield 1943 claims the award for top PSN game of the year, besting the PSN-exclusive Fat Princess.

Many readers have been sending tips to Joystiq about a new PS3 firmware update. In actuality, this is not a new update at all. Firmware 3.15 was released on December 9th and introduced the ability to play PSP Minis on the PS3. While this update was originally optional, the powers-that-be at Sony are now making it a mandatory update. "We have found out that users will not be able to acquire trophies on some game titles," we were told by a SCEE representative. "Users can avoid this problem by updating the PS3 system to firmware 3.15 and therefore we've made it a mandatory update. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused and appreciate for your understanding and continued support."
If you haven't updated your PS3 yet, make sure to allocate some time before attempting to jump online to install this mandatory update. You don't want to be late to your MW2 party, do you? [ProTip: Save yourself some time by downloading the update now on a USB flash drive.]

Hate in-flight movies? Didn't bring a book? Like to game? A subsidiary of airline Korean Air, Jin Air, is here to help by renting PSPgo consoles to passengers.
The PSPgo is available for rental for flights out of Incheon for 4,000 won (US$3.50) — way cheaper than the $6 that some airlines charge economy passengers for booze. It's not clear exactly what games are loaded on the UMD-less machine, but Sony Computer Entertainment Korea publishes titles like Patapon, LocoRoco: Midnight Carnival and Persona 3 Portable. So it's possible some of those titles are playable. It is also possible that they are not as Jin Air did not name specific games.
This is not the first airline to offer slick, new portables for passenger gaming fun. In 2006, Japanese airline JAL also introduced an in-flight DS Lite service. The then new DS Lite could be enjoyed free of charge by first class and executive class passengers in a special, limited time only promotional campaign.
The following year, the Japan's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport set its sights on banning the use of the wireless functions on portable game devices like the DS and the PSP. The extent of the ensuing crackdown seemed to signs reminding passengers not to turn own the wireless functions during landing and takeoff and friendly warning from flight attendants.

Want to blast some BRAVIA Internet Video Link content from your PS3 to your million-inch Sony-built 3D OLED TV this year? Well, you're half in luck. Sony's bringing the Internet Video Link service to the PS3 (which seems to us to provide little that isn't already possible on the PS3, but who are we to judge?) but won't do any new OLED TVs this year. The problem is, naturally, cost, but hopefully 2011 will bring better things in sizes larger than 11-inches -- LG won't have a 30-incher until 2012 at least, and that seems too long to wait. Sony COO Stan Glasgow, in his interview with Sony Insider that turned up these nuggets, also is refreshingly non-bombastic about 3D. He points out that Sony's doing 3D-capable TVs for essentially zero price differentiation, with separate glasses and emitters that can be bought after the fact, and calls the 3D channel rollout "complex." But who knows, perhaps he's just never seen enough of Taylor Swift in 3D to know what he's missing?

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Assassin's Creed II are among the games nominated for this year's Writers' Guild of America videogame writing award.
Also nominated in the year's line-up is Bethesda game Wet, and Activision's X-Men Origins: Wolverine.
The specific games writing category was introduced by the guild two years ago, and has, to date, been given to the writers of LucasArts' Star Wars: The Force Unleashed and Dead Head Fred.
Its implementation was made to "encourage storytelling excellence in videogames, to improve the status of writers, and to begin to encourage uniform standards within the gaming industry," said the WGA.
As writers are rapidly becoming more central players in this medium, the Guilds were working to bring more videogame projects under their jurisdiction to ensure writers received the benefits of a WGA contract, it added.
The awards this year were open to games released between December 1, 2008 and November 30, 2009. Winners will be announced on February 20 at a Writers' Guild Award ceremony to be held simultaneously in Los Angeles and New York.

January 15th, 2010, 20:17 Posted By: wraggster
PlayStation 3 hardware sales rose 87 per cent year-on-year in the US in December, making the month the single highest grossing for the console.
Units sales were 1.35 million during the month - an achievement that Sony said marked a "turning point for the platform". The console saw a growth of 22 per cent for the entire calender year, selling 4.3 million units in comparison to 3.8 million in 2008.
Software sales also reached an all-time high in December, led by Modern Warfare 2, which has sold 2.8 million units on PS3 to date, followed by Madden NFL 10 and Assassin's Creed II.
First-party title Uncharted 2: Among Thieves had sold one million units since going on sale in October, Sony confirmed.
PSP hardware also saw a sales increase of more than 122 per cent between November and December, contributing to the PlayStation brand as a whole generating more than USD 5.1 billion in revenue in the US in 2009 - a 26 per cent share of the total videogames industry revenue for the year.
"It's no surprise we've seen PS3 units sold every month nearly double since October," said SCEA’s Patrick Seybold. "We knew 2009 would be a turning point for the platform due to the new price and a content line up that is fueling unprecedented consumer and industry interest with games like Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.
"The consumer response has simply been overwhelming and we anticipate the high demand for PS3 to continue into the coming months as we work closely with retail to meet the demand.
"The best part of PS3's story today is that 2010 will offer entirely new gaming experiences to consumers as we launch MAG, God of War III, 3D gaming, and the new motion controller this year. It's never been a better time to be a PS3 owner."

via Joystiq
After numerous trailers for the upcoming Resident Evil 5: Gold Edition's zany costumes, Capcom has finally released a trailer focusing on both of the extra DLC story chapters. "Lost in Nightmares" takes place before the events of Resident Evil 5 and includes a mansion inspired by the setting of the very first RE game. "Desperate Escape" takes place during the end of Resident Evil 5, as Jill and Josh race to save Chris and Sheva from the endgame's exploding volcano.
With Jill serving as the "main character" for the additional content, the Gold Edition expansion looks like a genuine sequel, a la Resident Evil 3: Nemesis. Most importantly, we're glad to see Jill's masterful unlocking skills put to good use in this trailer. The first batch of RE5 DLC will be available on February 17.

Polyphony Digital boss Kazunori Yamauchi has declared that Gran Turismo 5 doesn't use all of the PlayStation 3's power.
Talking to VentureBeat (via VG247), Yamauchi said the racing game uses 80 per cent of the machine's grunt - about the same as Uncharted 2.
"The PS3 hardware has a very high peak performance. The better you manipulate it, the better it performs," Yamauchi explained.
Perhaps that's why Gran Turismo 5 - recently delayed yet again - has taken so long to appear.
"This one has taken five years. Nothing is getting easier or less expensive," he added.
Unlike in the old days, Polyphony now requires hundreds of people to make a game, as 500 polygons per car has rocketed up to around 500,000. The studio today has 140 staff, whereas Yamauchi recalled the first Gran Turismo being made by 15 people.
"Before, you could wake up one morning and have a good idea. You could see it implemented in some form by the evening. Now, if you have a good idea, it may be two or three years later before you see the result," he said.
You'd think that after all that time Yamauchi would be looking forward to release. You'd be wrong of course.
