Sony Ericsson's Xperia Play has seen a dramatic price drop at UK retailers, with some online outlets offering the gaming smartphone at almost half it regular price.
Expansys has made the biggest reduction, bringing the PlayStation phone down in price from the standard £500 to £289. MeanwhilePlay is offering the device at £299.
The price cuts on the Sony Ericsson phone follow a dramatic reduction announcement for the 3DS last week, which is set to have its RRPslashed by a third later this month.
Sony chairman Kazuo Hirai signalled yesterday that Sony won't engage in a price war with the 3DS, and the company's rival handheld PlayStation Vita looks set to launch at £229 (with 3G models going for £279).
Hirai's comments have led to claims from Japan-based analysts that the platform holder risks"major failure".http://www.computerandvideogames.com/314417/retailers-knock-almost-50-off-xperia-play-price/

Sony has announced PlayStation Network PLAY, "a new program showcasing four of the season's hottest action titles".
Featuring Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition, The Baconing, BloodRayne: Betrayal and Renegade Ops, the PLAY promotion will become available for pre-order in North America, Europe, Australia and New Zealand from August 10, with the first release four days later and the program running until September 20.
With each pre-order from the PLAY program gamers will receive a PS3 theme, while each purchase will come with a separate gift. PlayStation Plus members will get an automatic 20 percent off every PLAY program purchase. Additionally, players who buy all four PLAY titles will receive a voucher code to download Payday: The Heist for free.
Here's the run-down of the PLAY line-up:
- August 24: Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition - This highly-anticipated action-fighting title from Capcom features 20 playable characters, HD graphics, more than 200 pieces of unlockable content, more than 100 trials and more than 100 challenges. When Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition is purchased through PLAY, purchasers will be able to unlock GILL, the self-proclaimed god, without having to beat the game with every character, as day-one DLC. Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition will be €14.99 and will be available for pre-order until August 18.
- August 31: The Baconing - The newest action-RPG title from Hothead Studios is the third in the popular DeathSpank series. Attempt to defeat the Anti-Spank and his army of Cyborques, before they cast an evil shadow over Spanktopia. Discover exciting new worlds and battle hordes of enemies as you search to unlock the secret within the Fires of Bacon. When The Baconing is purchased through PLAY, purchasers will receive an additional co-op character, Roesha - One Bad Mutha. The Baconing will be €12.99 and will be available for pre-order until August 25.
- September 7: BloodRayne: Betrayal - This 2D side-scrolling platformer from Majesco Entertainment features 15 bloodthirsty levels where Rayne attempts to infiltrate a treacherous castle, take out a fiendish horde and stop an evil vampire massacre. BloodRayne: Betrayal will be €12.99 and will be available for pre-order until September 1.

When Renegade Ops is purchased through PLAY, purchasers will receive a Vehicle & Character Pack with two new vehicles and special weapons. Renegade Ops will be €12.99 and will be available for pre-order until September 9.
- Bonus Gift: Payday: The Heist - This gritty, first-person shooter from Sony Online Entertainment lets players take on the role of a hardened career criminal executing intense, dynamic heists in constant pursuit of the next "big score." A PSN voucher code for Payday: The Heist will be provided to buyers of all four PLAY titles as a bonus gift provided they purchase the games on or before September 20, following release of the game. The game can also be pre-ordered separately starting September 21, 2011. European pricing for Payday: The Heist is to be confirmed.
Sony said earlier today that all of its games will be offline for around five hours tomorrow morning due to PlayStation Network maintenance.http://www.computerandvideogames.com/314477/sony-announces-playstation-network-play-promotion/

It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here -- or at least its pre-order page is. Sony's hotly anticipated PlayStation Vita has been on our minds since January, and now it's making its CanadianNorth American pre-order debut via Best Buy Canada. The product pages for both the WiFi-only and 3G editions list a release date of March 30th -- which lines up with previous reports that the console won't be gracing your stocking this Christmas -- but we'd take that estimate with a heaping fistful of salt. If you're itching to throw down some Canadian dollars, however, feel free to hop on over to the source to secure yours now.

SCEE's senior development manager Simon Benson has toldGamesIndustry.biz that the cost of implementing 3D into home console games is so low as to become negligible.
"In some cases we've had titles where 3D has been half a per cent of overhead," he said.
"It can literally be the render programmer spending a couple of weeks manipulating it. Particularly if a game already has split screen in it, just take that mode of the game and reauthor it to deliver really high quality 3D. So often it's the case of it doesn't even hit the radar of whether we should or shouldn't, it can just be done."
He believed people often mistakenly assume that the costs faced by film and television productions also apply to games.
"It's not of the same magnitude as it is with say, movies or live productions, and having to make that decision. It really comes down to do with if the game teams that are making these titles think that the experience they're putting together is compelling enough and the title lends itself enough to this technology to add that feature in."
Simon Benson has been working with 3D at SCEE for two years, supporting internal and external studios. The full interview can be read here.

"Hackers' favorite recent target, Sony, has won an award at the Black Hat conference held in Las Vegas this week. However, much to the embarrassment of the company, the award it nailed was in the category of 'Epic Fail' of the year. The Pwnie awards, which are like Oscar equivalents in the hacker community, gave this 'honor' to Sony following the series of cyberattacks it was subjected to a few months back, which saw the company's PlayStation and PC gaming networks go down, as well as many other services suffering heavily."

Sony has just announced a rival to Microsoft's Summer of Arcade promotion, called PlayStation Network Play.
Similar to the XBLA offer, it contains four games released on Wednesdays at weekly intervals. Buying all four nets you a fifth, free.
Play begins on 24th August with the launch of Street Fighter III Third Strike Online Edition. 31st August brings DeathSpank threequel The Baconing.
7th September's game is Majesco's 2D platformer BloodRayne: Betrayal, while September 14th concludes the offer with Sega's Renegade Ops.
Gamers who grab all four before 20th September get co-operative FPS PayDay: The Heist free when it launches on 5th October.
Unlike Summer of Arcade games, PlayStation Network Play games are not platform exclusives. Instead, you'll get a free piece of DLC for each.

Planning to enjoy a little Killzone 3 multiplayer over breakfast tomorrow morning? Tough. All online play for SCEE-published games will be unavailable between 5.30am and 10.30am due to PSN "network maintenance".
"Please note for the duration of this period SCEE titles only will not be available online, and there may be additional downtime after for testing purposes," added a statement from Sony.
"This will not affect your ability to sign in to the PlayStation Network, and you will still be able to play other titles online."
Unsure which games fall under SCEE's jurisdiction? Here's a list.
There was no mention of what the purpose of the maintenance is.

South African newspaper Beeld reports that the first person known to be arrested for jailbreaking the Playstation 3 was arrested in Parktown, Johannesburg today. This raid was conducted by the South African Police Service's Commercial Crime Unit, after receiving criminal complaints from the South African Federation Against Copyright Theft (SAFACT). Members of the police were assisted by the South African Revenue Service (SARS) Computer Forensics Lab. The police confiscated goods of around R100 000 (14000 USD)."

How can this be? Sony's new handheld console already passed through the FCC and was even leaked on a UK Blockbuster flyer that stated an October release date. Yet apparently these clues count for nothing, because Bloomberg reports Kazuo Hirai as saying that the Vita won't launch in the US and Europe until early next year -- with only Japan getting the device before Christmas. Why would Sony be content to miss out on all that festive trade? We have absolutely no idea, but it looks like we'll have to email Santa a revised wish list.

August 5th, 2011, 11:00 Posted By: wraggster
Sony's PSP successor, PlayStation Vita, will only be released in Japan in 2011, with US and European customers forced to wait until early 2012.
Executive vice president Kaz Hirai revealed the news at a press conference at Sony's Tokyo headquarters, according to AP. He declined to give specific release dates - more news is expected at Cologne's Gamescom next week, and the Tokyo Game Show in September - and also denied that the price would be cut in response to Nintendo's decision to slash the price of the 3DS.
Prior to Nintendo's announcement, the entry-level Vita model, which supports WiFi but not 3G, was set to launch in the US at $249.99, the same price as the 3DS. With Nintendo cutting that price by a third, to $169.99, from next week, many wondered whether Sony would follow suit.
"We packed so much into the device and made it very affordable," Hirai said. "There is no need to lower the price just because somebody else that happens to be in the videogame business decided that they were going to lower [their] price."
While Hirai's confirmation that the Vita will not be seen in the US and Europe until next year is disappointing, it is not exactly surprising. While Sony said at E3 that Vita would be released this year, it has been managing expectations ever since the device was first unveiled in January with a vague release date of "holiday 2011".
SCEA president Jack Tretton said in January that the company's choice of words was "ambiguous for a reason…It's very difficult to have the quantities to be able to launch on a worldwide basis on the same date." In April, he said the Tohoku earthquake and tsunami was "maybe the straw that says maybe we only get to just one market by the end of the year."
As such Hirai was correct in his claim that this does not constitute a delay for the device; instead, he said it was to ensure a strong launch line-up in all territories. The failure to release worldwide before the end of the year, however, gives Nintendo's 3DS a clear run at Christmas.
With Sony's new handheld missing out on the most lucrative sales period of the year, and Nintendo set to release 3DS versions of Super Mario Bros and Super Mario Kart before the year is out, Vita's delay has at one made Nintendo's job a little easier and Sony's a little harder. The firm will doubtless hope that the sluggish 3DS sales were solely a reflection of its launch price, rather than symptomatic of a general decline in interest in gaming handhelds following the rapid rise of smartphones.

Could be very interesting for Homebrew devs out there:
id Software will release the source code for Doom 3 later this year.
Speaking at Quakecon 2011, id's technical director John Carmack revealed that parent company Zenimax was supportive of the move. He also challenged other developers to release their own source code, arguing that it helps the community.
The source code will be available after the launch of Rage, which hits shelves in October.
id's engine Id Tech Five will also go open source, but not until it's no longer used for official projects. Carmack speculated that this could be as long as ten years away.
Carmack refused to talk about id's next big project, Doom 4, but did reveal that there were already plans for Rage 2. He also described a browser-version of classic title Wolfenstein as “off the table.”
Quakecon is an annual gaming event held in Dallas, Texas, and and curated by id Software. The event will run until August 7.

via http://www.psp-ita.com/4516-400-Hanging_v1.2.html
Interesting and funny amateur video game production that all Italian proposes to carry on the PSP one of the most classic games that have accompanied our youth and beyond. The Italian developer Rinnegatamante releases v1.2 of Hanging, homebrew of the famous hangman game.
Who has not ever played the hangman game in school during the absence of a professor raise your hand. Well, for the few who have shown their hand, the game is simple: you have to guess the hidden word. A group of lines corresponds to the number of letters composing the word. At each turn you choose a letter that if present in the word will be placed in the corresponding position, otherwise it will be a drawing of a part of the body of the victim hanged. The game ends when the word is guessed or if the hangman is completed figure, ruling in this case the defeat of the player.
In Hanging is repeated all this in single player, the homebrew will choose a word for us that we should second guess the rules already mentioned. The v1.2 is made compatible with Lua Player Plus , the homebrew becomes lighter and has added the ability to pesonalizzare the database of words through the game. This is very convenient to challenge friends.
Once again thank the developer PSP-ITA Rinnegatamante , valued member of our forums.
Following changelog and download. [Additional Info: Changelog and download]
.: Changelog:.
v.1.2 (28/07/2011)
- Carried on the homebrew Lua Player Plus
- Reduced weight of about 600 KB homebrew
- Added possibility to replay a game over
- Rebuilt graphics homebrew (Thanks to DarkGiovy)
- Released source code

via http://www.psp-ita.com/4514-398-CSPS...tBall_Mod.html
One of the most popular homebrew productions is certainly CSPSP, excellent PSP port of Counter Strike which also allows online multiplayer challenges thanks to the dedicated server. The fan community is always active, and thanks to this interest comes a fun mod.
Who has long been beloved videludico with the world knows the history of Counter Strike . Born as the first successful amateur mod Half-Life for PC (Valve), has been so successful that it became an official title for all purposes with various reissues. The basics are simple: cops and robbers . Two groups of players fit the shoes of terrorists and anti-terrorists. Missions range from hostage rescue, bomb-defusing up to the classic Team Deathmatch. CSPSP for those who do not know, is a 2D port on PSP of the title mentioned that immediately entered into the hearts (and the PSP ) of a large number of users.
Today the developer Omnitrix releases a mod based on the latest CSPSP (the v1.8.2) that completely transforms the way allowing you to set aside the bloody urban battles for the most colorful and innocuous challenges PaintBall. Particularly appreciated the chance to play with the mod in both single and online.
For the occasion, recreating the version 1.8.2 of its CSPSP with serever v1.41

During the Develop conference (via Eurogamer), Sony Europe R&D manager Phil Rogers outlined some possible interactions between the PlayStation Vita and the PS3. The systems are already known to share saves across compatible games, and share some interoperable games like Wipeout 2048, but Rogers discussed some other capabilities, including some not yet seen in Vita/PS3 interaction.
"PS3 can send data down to Vita and Vita can display it," he said. "You could use the unique features [of Vita] - gyroscope, touch front and back - as a control device for a PS3 game." In what could be a veiled dig at the Wii U, he also said that because you can have games running on both systems, each using its own processor, "You're not sacrificing the PS3's CPU to be able to have a rich experience on Vita."
At launch, the Vita will have some cross-platform features, including scoreboards and PSN user data. "For launch we'll also have Remote Play, which does look good on Vita - I saw an early version of it running recently." Remote Play, also available on the PSP right now, allows video of compatible titles to be streamed from the PS3 for play on the PSP. Continuation Play, through which a game can be saved on one platform and played on the other, will also be available early on. The first known game to use that is Ruin.
