Here is another updated version of They Do Not Die. This new update Most notably features destructible walls and the ability to save the game state. Game saves are fairly large and consequently rather slow to create and load but that will improve over time.
I’m still undecided about what the subtitle should be so keep posting any ideas you have. Right now I’m leaning towards going with Collateral Damage (suggested by Griffunt) or Life After Death (suggested by Annelies)
On a less obviously related subject does anybody know how to go about measuring the passage of time with millisecond precision (or near enough to it for it to be usable when calculating the frame rate) when developing for PS3 with PSL1GHT?
What has changed:
You can save the game at any time and obviously also load that save.
The on screen text now scales so it no longer fills an overly large portion of the screen at low resolution.
In addition to your gun you now have a rocket launcher.
Rockets explode when they are shot, hit a person or hit a wall.
Explosions destroy walls, push people back and hurt people.
You can now run which consumes energy.
Shooting momentarily prevents energy from regenerating.
If you try to consume energy when you have none left then you will instead lose health.
The speed that your health regenerates at directly correlates to how much energy you have.
The screen (specifically the edges of it) turn red when you are low on health.
The world is more densely populated.
PS3 controls:
Left analog stick = Move
Right analog stick = Aim
L1 = Shoot the rocket launcher
R1 = Shoot the gun
L3 = Run
Select = Save
Start = Load

Here is something “new” that I have been playing with. It’s sort of a continuation of a browser based demo I made when HTML5 was the cool new thing and I was still messing around with JavaScript and an HTML5 canvas for the first time.
Currently there is some green stuff that falls down and you can rotate the world to make it fall in a different direction and in doing so you can get the green stuff to navigate the world. There is a built in level editor.
It is just a toy at the moment and a roughly constructed one at that. I will probably do a bit more work on it and make it into a game but I don’t know when. I’m not really considering it a very high priority. If you think it’s interesting and want to see it improved upon sooner rather then later then let me know.
PS3 controls:
Left analog stick = Move the camera
L1 and R1 = rotate the camera and the direction of gravity
L2 and R2 = zoom the camera in and out
X (in the editor) spawn a wall (hold and drag to scale)
Circle (in the editor) spawn a something (hold and drag to scale)
Square (in the editor) spawn slime
Triangle (in the editor) delete the most recently spawned thing

News via http://wololo.net/wagic/2011/08/22/t...sets-in-wagic/
If you haven’t heard, I’m running a little contest for Wagic users, and there’s 100$ in cash for the winner (check here if you’re interested). We recently got our first entry for the contest, Vikta’s Temple of Wololo. This is an original take at the campaign system, as it doesn’t have much of a story, but basically allows you to “donate” some credits to the “Temple of Wololo”, and in exchange get a set to unlock for you. Very useful, especially if you’re close to the end of the game and only have a few last sets to unlock (they get more and more difficult to unlock with time…).
Temple of Wololo can be downloaded from Vikta’s thread here, but other (more serious?) campaigns for Wagic can also be downloaded from our campaigns subforum. To install a campaign, just unzip it into the “campaigns” subfolder of your wagic resource folder. To play it, simply run the game and select 1player > Story then choose the campaign you want in the selection menu.
You have until September 15th to submit your campaign to the contest. Right now Vikta’s entry is the only competitor, so there sure is room for more entries

UK PS3 sales jumped almost 65 percent week-over-week following the introduction of a global price cut last Tuesday.
That's according to a "reliable retail source" close to MCV, which also reports that a heavyweight PS3 marketing campaign kicked off today. The site says an extensive 5,000 run of six-sheet public poster ads hit UK high streets this morning.
Last week, Sony slashed the price of the 160GB PS3 from £249 to £199 in the UK, and the cost of the 320GB version from £299 to £249.
John Koller, director of hardware marketing at Sony Computer Entertainment America, said of the move: "We're opening our arms for the Xbox 360 and Wii owners to come over. There's a real opportunity for those consumers to be able to play, what we view, are the best games in the industry on the PS3 this fall."http://www.computerandvideogames.com/316398/ps3-sales-up-65-following-price-cut-report/

Sony is absolutely convinced we're going to see "a lot of mobile and tablet gamers come over to Vita".
That's according to SCEA hardware marketing director John Koller, who countered recent claims that there isn't a market for a device like the Vita during an interview with IndustryGamers.
"When you look at the type of consumer that's playing cell phone games currently, it's someone that enjoys smaller 'kill time' gaming and has not gravitated to the larger, richer, deeper experiences that true handheld gaming provides," he said.
"As we go toward the PlayStation Vita, I can tell you that as we started looking at that product and the market opportunity several years ago, we saw a real strong demographic for those deeper, richer, console-type experiences.
"We had them on PSP, but we've taken them to a new level on PS Vita with the entirety of new ways to play," he added. "That 'new ways to play' idea, particularly for Vita, really differentiates from what's available on mobile phones or tablets and, frankly, what will be available on those platforms over the next three to five years.
"You're going to see PS Vita expand what a lot of people believe to be true about handheld gaming, and you're going to see a lot of those current mobile phone and tablet gamers come over to Vita. We're very convinced of that."http://www.computerandvideogames.com/316192/sony-convinced-vita-can-poach-mobile-gamers/

August 20th, 2011, 23:33 Posted By: wraggster
Sony has revealed that cross-game voice chat, a feature which many PS3 owners have been pleading for, can't be implimented due to RAM constraints in the hardware.
According to Sony Worldwide Studios president Shuhei Yoshida, games are given priority when distributing the RAM, leaving little to none for feature such as voice chat.
Apparently this is something that can't be changed, so it's unlikely we'll see the feature be introduced in future system updates.
"Once a game gets RAM we never give it back," Yoshida has said, "It's not possible to retrofit something like that after the fact."
"The game has to use its own memory to do in-game voice chat. There's always voice chat in the game. But it's a part of a game feature. It's not a part of an OS feature. That's the reason in terms of the ability to have voice chat across different games," he added.
Earlier this week Sony cleared up rumors by stating the PlayStation Vita's RAM hasn't been cut by half. It went on to confirm that the upcoming handheld will contain 512MB of RAM, with 128MB of dedicated VRAM. More than enough for cross-game chat we reckon.

Speaking to Eurogamer at this week's Gamescom in Cologne, Sony Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida said that recent reports that Sony had halved the RAM in its upcoming portable to keep costs down were "very funny." Those reports appeared to be corroborated by Reality Fighters developer Novarama, but Yoshida says a RAM cut was never on the agenda. "It's been very funny. Some developer mentioned the RAM was halved," he said. "We never announced the amount of RAM, and we never changed it. We've been making games, right, and we've been showing the games since January. If RAM gets cut in the middle of development, there's no way we can complete the games. So I was like, what's going on?" Sony's PSP successor has 512MB of RAM and 128MB of VRAM, meaning it has more memory than Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3

Sony, after nearly two years on standing firm on PS3's price, dropped the console to $249, and it's been having an immediate impact. GameStop has already noted a 'significant' increase in PS3 sales, while big box retailer Target confirmed an 'immediate lift' in sales and recommended PS3 as a 'great option' for its customers. Not only that, but leading e-tailer Amazon saw PS3 sales explode by 400% in the days after the price cut. All told, in the months ahead, analysts are expecting Sony to see as much as a 30% sales bump for PS3 this holiday season."

US retailer GameStop has reported that sales of the PlayStation 3 and Nintendo's 3DS have already jumped after both received recent price cuts.
While the 3DS price cut was larger than expected, president Tony Bartel told investors last night he's encouraged by the growth in hardware - sales of console in the second quarter were down, accounting for only 7.5 per cent of profits.
"We have seen a significant acceleration in the sale of PlayStation 3 and the 3DS," he said. "So we do expect for there to be an increase.
"Although these were not unexpected price decreases or price reductions that we had projected, obviously, the 3DS was somewhat larger than what we had anticipated. But we do see that will spark demand in the third and the fourth quarter."
"That is a good barometer for what is going to take place in terms of the installed base."
Nintendo dropped the price of the 3DS this last week with plenty of warning after poor sales, while Sony cut the RRP of the PlayStation 3 with immediate effect this week.
Another US retailer, Target, told our sister site IndustryGamers that it has also seen an "immediate lift"in sales.

August 19th, 2011, 22:55 Posted By: wraggster
US retailer GameStop is currently beta testing the streaming of PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 games, with a plan to roll-out a consumer service by the middle of next year.
Earlier this year the company bought Spawn Labs, extending its peer-to-peer game streaming service into a cloud gaming offering, and promised "a wide selection of high-definition video games on demand on any internet-enabled device."
Yesterday it revealed that as well as PC game streaming, it is working with publishers to stream console games to smart devices as well as dedicated hardware via the Spawn software client.
"Spawn recently began its first beta and is currently live, testing the streaming of Xbox 360, PS3 and PC games from a data centre in Austin, Texas," confirmed GameStop president Tony Bartel.
The beauty of Spawn is it can take a very large assortment of games. There's really no restriction versus an Xbox 360 and PS3 game.
"We continue to get positive feedback from our publishing partners about the pro-console, low-investment model that we have chosen."
The closed beta will go national before the end of the year. At the beginning of 2012 GameStop is expected to reveal more details about the service and what it offers, along with a pricing model - and a nationwide launch is currently scheduled for the first half of 2012.
The Spawn client will be offered to GameStop's PowerUp Rewards members - currently 12 million customers - and feature a demo service which it's claimed will not require publishers to modify their games.
Cloud gaming technology from Gaikai and OnLive is already proving a viable business, offering PC games and demos over the internet with very little in the way of dedicated hardware beyond the right control method.
Behind closed doors these technologies have also shown format crossover such as World of Warcraft running on an iPad or console and full PC games launching from within Facebook.
And with the growth of Smart and connected TVs, both Gaikai and OnLive are dropping their technologydirectly into the hardware and consulting on dedicated controllers, taking streaming games straight to the consumer's living room - an area that GameStop is also interested in.
"Those conversations are taking place today," offered Bartel. "There's a whole cadre of services that GameStop can offer far beyond just Spawn. The beauty of Spawn is it can take a very large assortment of games. There's really no restriction versus an Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 game.
"We're also experimenting with PC game delivery as well, but we can take that to any Internet-connected device including TV. So clearly, it's part of our acquisition forethought. We anticipated being involved in smart TVs as well."

August 19th, 2011, 01:47 Posted By: wraggster
Vita's 512MB of RAM enables it to run programs in the background while gamers are playing games, Sony has said.
One of those programs is cross-game voice chat via Vita's Party system.
"Part of the reason [for including 512MB of RAM] is more RAM means easier development for game developers," Sony president of Worldwide Studios Shu Yoshida told Eurogamer at Gamescom.
"But as important as that is to allow the PS Vita always to do more while the game is running in the background, or when you switch between the game and other applications or system software functionalities.
"So the reason why we were able to include something like Party, which enables cross-game voice chat, is because we designed Vita so it always has enough resources to handle something like that behind the game while it's running."
At Gamescom Sony revealed the final specifications of Vita, set for launch in Europe in early 2012.
The confirmation of 512MB of RAM ended months of speculation about the power of the machine, speculation sparked by a comment by a developer that appeared to back up murmurings that Sony had halved the amount of memory in Vita.
The RAM reduction rumour began in May when a French source said Sony had lowered the base Wi-Fi Vita model's RAM from 512MB to 256MB to lower the cost of the unit to compete with Nintendo's 3DS.
But according to Yoshida, Sony never even considered cutting the amount of memory powering the portable.
"It has been very funny," he said. "There were some rumours for the last few months. Some developer mentioned the RAM was halved. We never announced the amount of RAM, and we never changed it.
"We've been making games, right, and we've been showing the games, like Uncharted, since January. If RAM gets cut in the middle of development, there's no way we can complete the games. So I was like, what's going on?
"I got lots of Tweets saying, Sony made a huge mistake by reducing the amount of RAM. We never talked about the amount of RAM and we never cut it.
"So going into Gamescom we agreed there was no reason we should hide it, so we just added it to the specifications. We always had 512MB of main RAM and 128MB of V-RAM. Actually when you add them together, PS Vita has more RAM than PS3 [the PS3 has 256MB of XDR DRAM main memory and 256MB of GDDR3 video memory]."
The speculation around Vita's RAM caused some concern over the power of the final version of the machine. Yoshida moved to reassure gamers about this.
"So far we've been getting very positive reactions from our developer and publisher partners," he said. "We could put even more power into the portable, but there has to be a balance made between the size of the unit, the weight and the amount of time you can play. We think we've hit the right balance in terms of creating a great experience on the PS Vita.
"The PS3 provides a full HD experience. The resolution on the PS Vita screen is much lower. Even though it's four times the resolution of PSP, compared to the console, the amount of data you have to push is much smaller. So that works to the advantage of the PS Vita."

The ample power of Sony's new portable, Vita, means there's not a huge difference between development for it and its bigger PS3 sibling.
Speaking in a video interview with the PS Blog (below), developer Nihilistic's Rob Heubner said Sony has been seeing PS3 developers to get the most out of Vita.
"We're a PlayStation 3 company. That's our engine, that's out technology. And really, [Sony] were looking for PS3 developers to milk the power out of the Vita, and I think that's definitely the right way to go because it's got a lot of power," said Huebner.
"It's got all the shaders, it's got a lot of CPU, so it's really not that big of a change for us to work on the Vita compared to the PS3," he added.
He would know - Heubner is part of the team developing Resistance: Burning Skies on Vita, the official title of which was revealed at Gamescom this week alongside screenshots and footage of the game looking pretty sweet on the small screen.
Huebner says the aim is to make a "no-compromises experience with all the elements you'd expect from a Resistance game." http://www.computerandvideogames.com/316177/moving-from-ps3-to-vita-is-not-that-big-a-change-dev/

Last year DirecTV started offering NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go access even to those who couldn't / wouldn't get their satellite packages, and it's upping the ante this year by bringing its slate of football games to the PlayStation 3. NFL Sunday Ticket To-Go is still a $50 add-on that adds HD streaming access on PCs and mobile devices, however this year there's also an app for the Motorola Xoom and Samsung Galaxy Android tablets. PS3 owners can get in on the action either by adding the To-Go option or paying a flat $339.95 without DirecTV service. Of course, it's still interested in enticing people to switch to the dish by offering Sunday Ticket at no additional charge for new subscribers -- just ask fairy Deion Sanders after the break. No word on any apps for Boxee, Roku and the rest, but other new additions for the 2011 season (now that the lockout is resolved and it's actually happening) include a new four channel mix with larger cells for those late afternoon games, and integration with NFL.com Fantasy Football that lets viewers keep up with their scores and players right on the TV.http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/17/directv-brings-nfl-sunday-ticket-to-android-tablets-and-the-ps3/

Last month Ubisoft president Yves Guillemot sent the rumour mill into overdrive when he suggested that Sony will be forced into rush-releasing PS4in the wake of Nintendo bringing out the Wii U.
But new Sony Computer Entertainment CEO Jim Ryan shrugged off such claims when CVG put them to him at Gamescom - implying that there's no next-gen console coming from his company anytime soon.
"All I'm focussed on right now is making the most of PS3," he said. "We've over 50 million PS2's installed across our PAL territory, and as you've heard yesterday we're up to 22 [million] on PS3, so there is a long way to go. That's all we need to focus on for now."
Instead of looking towards PS4, Ryan says - as suspected - that top of his list of things to do is to launch the new console Sony has confirmed - Vita - more successfully than its many PSP predecessors.
"It's obviously a top priority," he admitted. "We're going to launch early next year and it's critical that a marketplace the size of ours has a succesful launch, installs a lot of product, and that we publish all the great games that we have [lined up for it]."
Ryan insists it will succeed where previous iterations failed for two reasons: "The quality of the content available at launch far exceeds anything we've had on any platform [at the same stage], not just PSP. Marketing great content is much more straightforward than marketing content that perhaps is not so great.
"Secondly, come the fall [2012] you're going to see the heavy guns from the third party community coming to the platform, giving us additional momentum for the Christmas selling season."
Those heavy guns include 2K, with a debut handheld instalment of Bioshock, and Activision, which is bringing Call Of Duty to the new machine. But it's the bespoke Assassin's Creed game for Vita that Ryan is most excited about.
"The guys at Ubi are going to do something very special with Assassins Creed," he says. "It'll be built from the ground up - a brand new game designed with the new interfaces in mind. That IP, with the strength of the characters Ubi always put in those games, and Vita with all the sexy new stuff it's doing, can be a really potent combination."

Sony has put an end to rumours that the PlayStation Vita's RAM was cut in half to keep costs down.
The idea that the Vita's specs had been downgraded surfaced inMay, and seemed to be confirmed by Novarama CEO Dani Sánchez-Crespo last month.
However, according to 1UP, the RAM was cofirmed as 512MB in a press release announcing the handheld's support of the social media applications Foursquare, Facebook, Twitter and Skype.
The Vita is due for release in Europe early next year for €249.99.

Sony has revealed that the dev kits for the PlayStation Vita will sell for €1,900 plus VAT.
Speaking at GDC Europe yesterday, as reported by Develop, SCEE's George Bain said there is also no cost to join the PS Vita Develop Program.
"There's just that cost of the dev kit. If you're a small developer, we happy to talk to you about this. It will help if you have a games portfolio. There's no reason we won't speak with smaller studios about joining up."
According to Bain, prototype dev kits for Vita can be free. Sony's Pub Fund - which helps smaller developers fund their games in return for exclusivity - is receiving up to 15 pitches a week. Although currently limited to games, it's expected that non-gaming apps will eventually come to Vita, as well as free-to-play models.
The Vita launches this year in Japan and before the end of March in Europe and the US priced at $249 for the WiFi model and $299 for the 3G version.
Some developers including Heavy Iron and Crytek have been critical of the high price of the console, and suggested that it's launching in a portable market that has fundamentally changed since the introduction of smartphones and tablets.
Yesterday the Vita took centre stage at Sony's Gamescom press conference, with new games including Resistance: Burning Skies, Reality Fighters, Escape Plan and LittleBigPlanet on display.
